Guest SpeakerMel Howells - Cromehurst Scouts

Cromehurst Scouts is a small group that caters for young people with additional or special needs. At the moment they have a scout troop and a venturer unit. They accept members from 13 years up to 25, however, if they join before the age of 25, a member can stay for as long as they would like to.

Cromehurst has members with a variety of disabilities and abilities that are catered for in an inclusive and full scouting programme. They aim to transition members into main stream scouting but if the member wishes to stay with the school group, that is also an option.

Funding for the group’s activities and programmes is always an issue as they are a small group. Cromehurst provides opportunities that youth can not get elsewhere and covers an extensive range of skills.

The Scout group’s mission is to take youth from where they are, to achieve beyond themselves and become effective and independent members of society.

PRESIDENT RICHARD GREEN’S REPORTLast meeting was the annual essay and public speaking competition for the three primary schools in our area . The standard was high as usual. Roseville Public School pupils won both competitions with little separating the participants. I would like to thank Chris Lewis and Ian Garrard for acting as the judges. I would also like to thank the teachers who prepare the pupils for the competition . This often involves competitions within the schools. Ian also thanked Richard Kerslake for his production of the shields over a ten year period.

On Saturday I went to the first session of MUNA. There were 41 schools competing and the day was run by

Epping Rotary Club. We sponsored two teams from Shore who represented Fiji and USA. Some photos of the event are in the bulletin. The event was won by our sponsored SHORE team representing USA.

The next speakers will be two ladies who run the Cromehurst Scout Group . You will remember that we gave some money so Elsie Leneham the assistant scout leader, could to go to the Jamboree with the scout group.

At the last board meeting the board agreed to programme for the full rotary year.At the previous club meeting the club agreed to run a golf day with Chatswood. It is important that the club gets behind this golf event as our share of the profits will depend on how many golfers and sponsors we get.

Neil also requested members seek local sponsors for the fun run. He will be asking some members to approach local businesses. Harris Farm will be providing the fruit. Clarke Murphy have done the printing of the flyers. Neil will also be requesting people to distribute the flyers. The banners are going up now.

Those members that have been in the club for sometime will remember Warren McGurgan. He was president in 2008/2009. We sponsored his daughter, Lauren to Turkey as an exchange student . While there she experienced an earthquake and a few terrorist bombs She stayed the year. Unfortunately her first child was born with brittle bones, Osteogenesis Imperfecta . The board agreed to give $500 towards their society. Warren is a member of Frenchs Forrest club who are having a fund raiser for the society. (see page 20 for details)The board agreed that I should write to the three local schools saying we had Jacqui Jones as a speaker and they might like to approach her.

Dont forget Chatswood 70th Aniversary (p. 18 ) & District Change Over (p. 19)

Roseville Public School have requested our club again undertake the Fathers Day Breakfast BBQ at the school on Friday 30 August 2019.

From the feed back from last year, the bacon and eggs was the most popular so it is likely that the school will forgo sausages for this year.

Peter Lewis will be liaising with the school, and in due course will be seeking members who are able to assist on the morning.Breakfast is served from 7.30 am to 8.30 am.

FUN RUN - SUNDAY 21 JULY 2019The fun run is now less than 4 weeks away and we need to obtain some serious sponsorships to ensure we maximise the return from the event. Please discuss with Neil Howie any ideas you may have for sponsors for the event.

Ken Murphy, from Clarke Murphy Printing - one of our club’s long term supporters, has generously donated the printing of the flyers, as they did with the flyers for the Wine and Cheese Tasting night, and on many other previous occasions.

Members will soon be asked to assist with the letter boxing and display of the flyers.Full details about the Fun Run are shown on the following page.

Remember if you need any business or personal printing done, Ken will give you a competitive quote - so if you can, please consider supporting Clarke Murphy Printing, just as they support our club.

LAST MEETING - 11 JUNE. YEAR 6 PUBLIC SPEAKING AND ESSAY COMPETITION

Last meeting our Rotary Club conducted the Essay Competition and the Public Speaking competition for students in Year 6 at three (3) Schools, namely, Castle Cove Public School, Roseville Public School and Roseville College Junior School.

Essay Competition:Topic for the essay was;

“If you could meet any historical figure who would it be and why”The contestants were;Maddison Lee-Joe from Roseville College, who chose Katherine Johnson.Rebecca Frantz from Roseville Public School, who chose Marie CurieJames Bestic from Castle Cove Public School, who chose Ian Thorpe

Chris Lewis was the judge for this Competition and made the following comments:

“I was delighted and honoured to be asked to judge Rotary’s School essay competition again this year. It was an enjoyable but very difficult task due to the high standards of the essays. I would like to congratulate the contestants on the quality of their work. I asked my adult daughter to read them and after having read them she asked, “How old are these kids?” and when I told her they were 6th Graders she said “Wow”. So yes a difficult task !!!

We learnt about what these people achieved and why our contestants admired them and why they would like to meet their chosen person.

All the essays were of a high quality, well written and constructed. As there can only be one winner I had to find another element to single one essay out. I chose the element of why the contestants wanted to meet their person which was really the focal point of the essay .I felt that Rebecca Frantz’s essay on Marie Curie achieved this best.I think the meeting between Rebecca and Marie Curie would be enlightening and inspiring. I would like to be at this meeting”.

Rebecca Frantz from Roseville Public School was the winner.

A copy Rebecca’s winning essay follows this article.

A copy of the essays submitted by Maddison Lee-Joe and James Bestic are also included at the end of the overall article (pages 13 and 14).

Rebecca Frantz Winning EssayMarie Curie

Hello, my name is Rebecca Frantz. I am in year six at Roseville Public School, and tonight I am going to present my piece on why I would like to meet Marie Curie.

What inspired you to try and find cures for diseases? How did you feel after finding two new elements? Did you ever want to give up, thinking you weren’t going to succeed? How did it feel to be awarded two Nobel Prizes? Did you know that your name would become known worldwide after your discovery?

These are some questions I would want to ask Marie Curie if I had the privilege of meeting her.

First of all, I would love to meet her to ask her what inspired her. What pushed her to search for a cure for serious illnesses and how long she had wanted to do that for.

I would also ask Marie whether she ever wanted to give up, convinced she would never find a treatment. Surely in all those years of searching at least a few times she would have wanted to give up, thinking she was never going to get anywhere. After that I would question her about how it felt, after all that time, to discover two new elements, with one of them a treatment for cancer. It must have felt amazing, like all her hard work had finally paid off.

Finally, I would inform her of how well known her name is worldwide, and how successful radium has been with treating cancer. I am sure she would be delighted to hear that she has saved millions of lives. Not only that, but her achievements, quotes and perspective on life continue to inspire young women in our time.

Personally, I have been inspired by her quote: “You must never be fearful of what you are doing when it is right.” Thank you.

Public Speaking Competition The students spoke for between 2 – 3 minutes on a topic of the student’s choice. The Contestants were:Jemma Upton, from Castle Cove Public School.Lauren Chang, from Roseville College. Stephanie O’Chee, from Roseville Public School.

Ian Garrard and Chris Lewis were the judges of this Competition and Ian Garrard made the following comments.“I, along with Chris Lewis had the pleasure, though challenging task, of selecting a winner for the Public Speaking Competition from three local primary school’s representatives.Jemma Upton started by giving her 2-3 minute speech on male-vs-female salary equity and gave an excellent animated presentation well supported by relevant facts and figures. . Lauren Chang spoke on the oddities of travelling in Japan and, particularly, the high tech toilets. Again very humorous, well researched, with a strong personal and honest presentation. Finally, Stephanie O’Chee addressed the challenges of cross-culture and the oddities and opportunities this present. This too was well research, personal and challenged the listener. So close that a mere 2 point out of 100 separated all the three. The winner was…Stephanie O’Chee...congratulations!”

Living between Culturesby Stephanie O’Chee - Roseville Public School

IntroductionGood evening. Today I would like to talk about ‘Living between Cultures’.

Australia is a very multicultural country. There are many different cultures that make up our Australian society. There are the British, Irish, Italians, Germans, Indians, Chinese and Koreans..... just to name a few. However, some people live between cultures.

I am an ABCTake me, for example. I am an ABC. ABC stands for Australian born Chinese. I was born in Australia so that makes me Australian but I have a Chinese heritage. My parents and grandparents on both sides are Chinese so I look Chinese. When I was young, I was confused about whether I was Australian or Chinese. To make it worse, my parents who looked Chinese didn’t even speak any Chinese at all as they are ABC also, so we didn’t feel very Chinese except when my grandparents spoke Cantonese to each other.

Chinese customs and practicesThere are times when we show definite Chinese customs and practices. For example, it is customary to leave your shoes at the front of the door before you enter a house. We follow this practice. You can always tell when you come into the house of a Chinese family as their shoes are always near the front of the door.

We also celebrate Chinese New Year. Our family gathers together over a banquet meal. It is like Christmas but it lasts for a whole month. All the adults give little red packets to the children with money inside to symbolise good luck and prosperity. Another Chinese practice we have, is that we eat a lot of Chinese food like rice, meat and steamed vegetables. We also have lots of dumplings and noodles and we eat our food with chopsticks.

Not Chinese enoughHowever, there are times when you can see we are not very Chinese at all.

Firstly, if you look closely, you will see that we do not hold our chopsticks properly. We often end up using cutlery and are very comfortable eating spaghetti or having a barbeque instead. Secondly, we do not even speak the language, so we feel we are NOT very Chinese the most, when we are with ‘REAL’ Chinese people. Once we booked into a popular holiday tour to visit the famous Hobbiton Village in New Zealand. Due to a three hour traffic delay we missed our tour. We could

Page 14: &OXERI5RVHYLOOH&KDVH...2019/06/25  · Rotary Club of Roseville Chase Bulletin 1 MEETING on 25 June (6.00 pm for 6.30 pm start) Bulletin Volume; 29 Issue No; 22 25 June 2019 Guest

Rotary Club of Roseville Chase Bulletin 12

not book into a later tour, because all the tours were full except the final tour of the day for overseas Chinese tourists. The operators gave us a place on that tour because we looked Chinese. Out of desperation, we took it.

However, while we were on the tour bus, the guide started speaking IN MANDARIN ONLY. We could not understand ANYTHING that he or the other tourists said to us for the next TWO HOURS but we just followed everyone else, pretended to understand, smiled at everyone and took photos like everyone else.

It was very funny but it made us realise how un-Chinese we were.

Opinion and benefits of multiculturalismSo as you can see, I am living between two cultures. Sometimes it’s confusing but overall it is a great experience. You get to see and understand two different cultures and gain the benefits of both. Some people live between three or four cultures, depending on their parent’s and grandparent’s cultural backgrounds.

ConclusionIn the end, it doesn’t really matter which culture you come from. What is important is that we respect the different cultures and live peacefully with each other. We can learn a lot from living between different cultures as they all add to the richness of our Australian society.

Thank you for listening to my speech.

Youth Director, David Brand presented Stephanie O’Chee with her award in the

public speaking competition.

ESSAY SUBMITTED BY JAMES BESTIC.Who do you look towards? As a swimmer, I look towards Ian Thorpe. Even though he isn’t in the old history books yet, he’s definitely made history by winning 5 Olympic gold medals at the 2000 summer Olympics. I myself am an ambitious swimmer, swimming with a well-known swim club called Carlile. After watching Ian Thorpe’s races, I tried to apply his technique to my own style and I noticed my freestyle form took a big leap forward, cutting seconds off my speed.

Ironically, as a child Ian Thorpe was allergic to chlorine and was sidelined until the age of seven when he first participated in his school swimming carnival. Even though he had to swim with his head out of the water, he won the race due to his size advantage. Ian gradually overcame his allergy and went on to participate in many more events and won 9 individual gold medals at the NSW short course age championship. After that, he set his eyes on the Australian age championships and managed to win bronze in the 200 IM.

When the trials for the 2000 Olympics came around he managed to break some of his own world records while also making it through to the Olympics, held here

in Sydney. After winning three gold medals in the 400m freestyle, 4x100m relay and the 4x200m relay, he went on to the 2004 Olympics, winning two gold medals. Once the Olympics were over Ian decided to retire in his best event but later on made a comeback.

If I ever had the chance to meet Ian Thorpe it would be one of my most treasurable moments in my swimming career, and I would hope I might be able to take something technique-wise away from it to help me with my own swimming career.

By James BesticESSAY SUBMITTED BY MADDISON LEE-JOE.

Final commentsThese Competitions would not be held without the co-operation of the Teachers and senior staff at each of the Schools. Many thanks to them and also to the judges, Chris and Ian and to Greg Muldoon who produced the Certificates.

Allan Farrar will be the Program Manager, and you must keep Allan informed of the name of the person, and the topic of their address, for your allocated meeting. It is also critical for you to advise Allan of any change to the Roster, and who will be substituting for you. Any changes will be published in the Bulletin if advised before the cut-off time for Bulletin articles.

It is also essential in organising a guest speaker that you request a bio of the person and brief description of their address and forward to the Bulletin Editor at least 2 weeks before the meeting.
