MEETING on 12 March (6.00 pm for 6.30 pm start)

Bulletin Volume; 29 Issue No;16 12 March 2019

Tonights guest speaker is Jack Cannons AM

Australia’s largest and longest running charity motoring event – much imitated, never bettered! The Variety Bash is not a race or a rally, it’s a fun and social event, or in the words of the originator Dick Smith, ‘A drive in the outback with a few mates’ in cars that are at least 30 years old (with an awesome theme!).The Bash is a once in a lifetime chance to experience remote and regional parts of Australia that one might otherwise not see, all in support of Variety Charity.

Throughout the Bash, participants visit local towns, stopping into schools and organisations to visit the kids. Bashers get to see the direct impact of their fundraising efforts along the way, with a range of educational, health and mobility equipment provided to local schools and organisations en route.

The event is all about having fun. There are always festivities along the way, from theme nights to entertainment and other activities and games on the road.

The Variety Bash generally runs for 10 – 12 days depending on where the final destination has been set. The route and destination change each year. The full route is announced at a launch event each year, shortly after the finalisation of the previous Variety Bash. The Variety Bash has an exemplary safety record. All cars are tracked during the day by officials, who are in contact via HF radio and satellite phone with a central command post. The Variety Bash has its own team of paramedics and has full contact with RFDS and local authorities. In addition, all cars are checked over prior to the event, and a team of Mobile Workshop mechanics attend the event to assist entrants with car problems.

What is the Variety

Bash?

PRESIDENT RICHARD GREEN’S REPORT

After discussing the golf day with some past rotarians we have decided to postpone the golf day to later in the year.

Neil is progressing well with the wine tasting. It is now very important to sell as many tickets as possible to achieve our target of 150 people.

For the debate at Lindfield Rotary Club, our team will be Sue Ward ,Arthur Marshall and Ian Garrard. The topic will be “‘Australia’s big four banks are too big and too powerful’. Our club gets to select which side we debate.

Don’t forget it is a MONDAY night 25 MARCH. They need as many supporters as possible You must apologise by Friday morning.

A reminder for the board members for next year, please register for the District Assembly on 17 April. You have been sent a form. The Board is Secretary Arthur Marshall, Treasurer John Hartley, Fund Raising/ Foundation Neil Howie , Community/International/ Vocation Peter Lewis, Club Administration Norm Gibson, Youth Greg Muldoon.

Don’t forget the scouts anniversary on 31 March 2019. (See page 13 for details). As usual the scouts had a good contingent to help out with Clean up Australia on 3rd March 2019.

As most of you know Party Time Hire is closing and we had to remove the Rotary things from their warehouse to some of our homes. It is time to thank John Hartley and Party Time Hire for the support they have been, and given, to the club for the life of the club. THANK YOU PARTY TIME HIRE.

At this meeting the speaker, Jack Cannons, is from the Variety Club and will talk about the Variety Club Bash. It is a good meeting to bring a friend.

LAST MEETING - 26 FEBRUARY 2019

Great to see Allan Farrar back at our meeting, recovered and on the mend.

Guest speaker Dr Peter Tonkin, an Adjunct Professor of Architecture at the University of Canberra, gave us an outline of the many iconic sites and buildings in both Australia and overseas, with which he has had involvement with site and building planning and redevelopment.

Of major interest however was the upgrade and redevelopment to create the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct. The redevelopment of the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct is a priority infrastructure project for the NSW Government. The redevelopment will create a public arts and cultural hub on Sydney’s waterfront, while preserving its iconic heritage.Infrastructure NSW is overseeing delivery of this project on behalf of Create NSW. Stage One of the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct redevelopment has begun. From March 2019, stage two construction works will commence, and the project completed during 2020.

Below are some images of the facilities within the Arts Precinct when completed.

NEXT MEETING - MONDAY 25 MARCH 2019DEBATE AT LINDFIELD ROTARY MEETING

Monday 25 March, we are visiting the Lindfield Rotary Club for a resumption of the debates that we used to have against that club some years ago.

The composition of our team is Athur Marshall, Sue Ward and Ian Garrard, but keep that under tight raps in case there is any attempt by the Lindfield members ( or even our own members) to indulge in a little side wagering to sway the result. Zone Assistant DG Fiona Jenkins has accepted an invitation to be adjudicator and she is not accepteing any “brown paper bags” either.

Location; KILLARA GOLF CLUB

Time; 7.00 PM

Apologies; To Avis by 5.00 PM THURSDAY 21 MARCH at the latest

Topic of debate ‘Australia’s big four banks are too big and too powerful’. Our club gets to select which side we debate.

ADVANCED NOTICE - NORM GIBSON’S 85 BIRTHDAY BASH.(NEVER MISSES AN OPPORTUNITY)

As he does after every previous meeting, our former Program Chair, Norm Gibson writes to the guest speaker to thank them for their time and contribution. Following the meeting addresses by Anthony Haward from Captain Cook Cruises, Norm sent his usual eloquent email but concluded with the following;

P.S. I mentioned during the evening that I and a group of friends dressed in naval gear enjoyed the hospitality of Captain Cook Cruises when we occupied the top deck of Sydney 2000 for my 75th birthday. You suggested that I contact you to discuss a “special deal” next time. I turn 85 in April 2023. I will be in touch with you prior to then to discuss. Possibly we can occupy a larger deck that time. Or the whole boat. Norm.

Anthony responded as follows;Fantastic Norm. We would love to be able to provide a venue for you for that very special event. It was a great pleasure to be able to talk to the group. Thank you for asking me to come along. And thank you for writing. Anthony.

POSSIBLE COMBINED SYDNEY DISTRICTAt the Meeting on 9 APril, the Club will vote on whether to proceed with discussions investigating the proposal to establish one Sydney District (Combining Districts 9685 and 9675).

NOTE This is not voting on whether the two districts should combine , but on whether disucssions on the amalgamations should be continued.

On 27 February, President Richard circulated to all members, some information from ADG Fiona Jenkins and DG Susan Wakefield, on how the combined District would work, and Frequently Asked Questions about the pros and cons of it.

Please make sure you have read these before the 9 April and remember at that meeting the club will be asked to vote;

Yes to continue the discussionorNo, not to continue the discussions at this time.

The links to 2 videos about the proposal are;http;//youtu.be/dW1_5jPhNKU and http://youtu.be/MiXR2pqEdmU

HARD YAKKA

• Volunteers will be needed to set up tables, chairs, wine and food on Saturday afternoon, to clean up after the event and possibly to return tables etc on Sunday morning.• During the event volunteers will prepare and serve the cheese platters and ensure that water jugs are filled and tables cleared.• We will also need one person to run the raffle and for 5 assistants to sell tickets.• A Rotary MC is needed to open the evening and generally work with the Wine Selectors presenter for the smooth running of the evening.

The success of the evening depends on what we can do before the event to promote bookings, sell raffle tickets on the evening and to reduce expenses by obtaining donations of food items.

CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY - 3 MARCH 2019Clean up Australia Day was very successful.

There were a total of 32 volunteers- including 17 scouts from 1St East Roseville Group – plus leaders and parents. Thanks to Leader Graeme Steverson for his valuable contribution and organisation.

The 15 non-scouts included Rotary Members Richard Green, Malcolm Pilcher and Peter Lewis (Site Supervisor) and Rotary Friend PP John Hammond. The clean up collected a total of 23 (large) bags of rubbish/litter plus a number of other larger items. It is appalling how much rubbish was collected – despite Clean Up days over the past xx ? years!

Besides the Echo Point park area, they groups also cleared rubbish from the track under Roseville Bridge, Babbage Road up to Malga Ave, plus the area around Ormonde Rd, Normac St and Roseville Bridge Marina, and the area along Castle Cove Drive.

Thank to Peter Lewis, Richard Green, Malcolm Pilcher, John Hammond and the scouts, parents and leaders, for helping to make it a very worthwhile day.

Bushcare Champion Richard Little, with Rotarians Malcolm Pilcher and President Richard Green. (John Hammond absent on litter spotting duties)

MYSTERY TOUR Roseville Chase Probus Club goes on a mystery tour every week and, to make it interesting, they have a sweep to guess where they are going. The coach driver, Di Wilkinson, has won five weeks in a row.

FACTS FROM SOME COURT TRIALS & OTHERAMUSING THINGS

LAWYER: Now doctor, isn’t it true that when a person dies in his sleep, he doesn’t know about it until the next morning?WITNESS: Did you actually pass the bar exam?

LAWYER: How old is your son, the one living with you?WITNESS: Thirty-eight or thirty-five, I can’t remember which.LAWYER: How long has he lived with you?WITNESS: Forty-five years.

LAWYER: How far apart were the vehicles at the time of the collision?

LAWYER: What is your date of birth?WITNESS: July 18th.LAWYER: What year?WITNESS: Every year.

LAWYER: Doctor, how many of your autopsies have you performed on dead people?WITNESS: All of them. The live ones put up too much of a fight.

A weeping woman bursts into her hypnotherapist’s office…“Doctor,” she cries. “I have been faithful to my husband for 15 years, but yesterday I broke that trust and had an affair! The guilt is killing me. I just want to forget that it ever happened!”The hypnotherapist shakes his head. “Not again…”

just read that 4,153,237 people got married last year.Um… shouldn’t that be an even number?!

A couple was married for 45 years and together they raised 11 children…… When asked the secret to their relationship, the wife replied, “Many years ago we made a promise to each other: The first one to pack up and leave has to take all the kids.”

Grandpa talking to his son, about his new hearing aid.“Its the most expensive one you can buy. It cost me $4,000”

Son; “What kind is it?”

Grandpa; “Its 4.15 p.m.”

Bobbin Head Cycle classic (Bobbo) Sunday 24 March 2019 The 8th Bobbo is being organised by the Rotary Clubs of St Ives, Ku-ring-gai, Turramurra and Wahroonga.

It is the premier cycling event in Sydney.

Some key statistics from the 2018 event. • 2,500 cyclists participated and raised $200,000 of which 50% was donated to our charity partner, Lifeline. • The other 50 % was donated to the charities supported by the Rotary clubs organising the event. These charities are: Cromehurst Foundation, Eagle RAPS, The Hornsby Women’s Shelter, Bo Hospital, PLC Shore Sony Foundation, Hornsby Connect and KYDS. • Over 500 volunteers were involved to ensure the safety of the cyclists. There are 4 ride distances being 27km, 57km, 80km and 104km. The cost to participate varies with each ride.

Please see the website for full details: www.bobbo.com.au The committee is looking for additional cyclists especially more younger riders and more female riders.

We would appreciate if members will ask their friends to ride in the event or to volunteer as marshals.
