PRESIDENT RICHARD GREEN’S REPORT

Last meeting we heard an excellent speaker, Dallas Booth, who gave us a clear summary of the banking enquiry.

This week we have DG Kalma McLellan visiting and also the MUNA teams from SHORE.

The MUNA who won the District MUNA , will have just returned from competing in the national competition in Canberra. Reports are that they performed very well but were not successful in taking first place.

This week is a busy week with Father’s Day breakfast at Roseville Public School on Friday 30 August, and Bunnings on Sunday 1st September.

Of course our main priority is the golf day. We are looking for players in teams of four (4).

Sponsors are most important as our share of the profits depends on how many sponsors we get. This should we a good day on a good golf course.

We decided not to proceed with the film night for the foundation as Roseville Cinema’s costs were too high.

The speakers roster is complete until the end of September. So for those responsible for speakers in October don’t forget to start organising them now . It is not always straight forward.

We have been asked if we would sponsor yet another probus club at the Roseville Uniting Church. Our involvement, is anyone interested in doing this. The interest meeting is on Monday16 September . We will discuss this next meeting.

NEXT MEETING - 10 SEPTEMBER 2019JOHN CUTLER - 3RD GENERATION

BESPOKE TAILOR

JOHN CUTLERJohn had first joined the company J H Cutler, in 1965. Other than a couple of years spent in London learning the business and studying at the Tailor and Cutter Academy, he had worked in the family firm all his adult life.

He assumed the responsibility for cutting in 1972, which evolved into Business Principal, Designer and Cutter in 1976. With over 50 years experience of high-end bespoke tailoring it is a position he still holds to this day.

The story of J.H. Cutler began in the mid 1800s, when the Cutler family, originally from the English Midlands, emigrated to Australia. Joseph Handel Cutler, an engineer by trade, found work in Ballarat during the time of the Victorian Gold Rush.

At that time his eldest son, also named Joseph Handel Cutler, was only six years old. His mother Matilda was an accomplished dressmaker having owned and run a successful business in Staffordshire, employing and building a solid clientele.

It was at her feet that young Joseph learnt his design and cutting skills. He moved to Sydney and in 1884 established his first J H Cutler shop at 70 King Street in the heart of the city.

John was featured in Leo Scofields column in the NST 4 issues back.

PS. I remember the advice given often by former member, the late Bob Clarke, “Measure twice and cut once”. No doubt something John also abides by.

Dallas Booth gave one of the most interesting and informative addresses we have had for some time, and presented in a clear way, the procedures of the Royal Commission, what promoted it, how the 2 QC’s assisting undertook their tasks (poking and poking a witness until they cut off their head), what areas of the financial industry the Commission examined, and its conclusions.

Dallas commented that the Commission was into the “Misconduct”, and disappointingly did not look at the “Good things” of the financial industry.

The Commission concluded that their were 6 norms of conduct;• Obey the law• Do not mislead or seceive• Act fairly• Promote services that are fit for purpose• Deliver services with reasonable care and skill; and• When acting for another, act in the best interests of that other. These norms are all reflected in existing laws.

If you are interested in getting a short overview of the Commission work and its conclusions go to the following website’

https://financialservices.royalcommission.gov.auSelect “REPORTS” tab, then “FINAL REPORT”, and after the first 34 pages (xxxiv) about content etc, the next 20 pages of the summary is worth reading.Whilst the Commission identified 6 norms of conduct, its uncanny how Rotary has already captures those same norms in its four-way-test.

On December 7th 2016, Dick and Pip Smith visited the Rotary Club of Wahroonga. Dick was introduced to the club by Rob Ferguson, they had both been at school together at the Roseville Primary school. The major surprise of the morning came when Dick produced a cheque and donated $1 million to Rotary. The money was used to set up Rotary Australia Compassionate Grants (RACG) with the aim to aid disadvantaged members of the Australian community irrespective of their location within Australia. Since then, RACG has received matching grants and as a result over $2 million has delivered numerous projects that have benefited local individuals and communities. Last Wednesday, the 7th August, John Cameron and I (DG Kalma) attended another event with Dick and Pip Smith. Once again Dick produced a cheque for $1 million and donated it to Rotary.

Here are Pip and Dick Smith with John Cameron, Lindsay May and Doug Reid

After the event, as we travelled back north on the train John Cameron and I reflected that we were possible two of only seven people who have witnessed Dick and Pip handing over $2 million to Rotary, with Dick and Pip being two of the seven! Another inspirational day at the Rotary office.

At the Club Presidents Meeting in D9675 on Friday night and D9685 on Saturday morning details of this major World Polio Day event were presented.

The major outcomes are that this is an opportunity for you to achieve one of your goals for the Rotary citation: Hold an event to raise funds for, or to increase awareness of Rotary’s work toward polio eradication.By your participation in this event your Club will assist in the following:

Fundraising: We ask that, as a Club, that your Club contribution is $1950 ($10 per station) and that you encourage your members to personally support this fundraiser by contribution $195 ($1 per station).

Rotarian Engagement: Based on last year’s event this is a great opportunity for all members to ride together on the train for a time of their own determination as a fellowship activity and mix with Rotarians from other Clubs in the Greater Sydney area. We will also have representatives from two Districts in New Zealand riding with us for the whole event.

ALDI SHOPPERS BEWARE - WARN EVERYBODY

A ‘heads up’ warning for all men who may be regular Aldi customers. Over the last month I became a victim of a clever scam while out shopping. Simply going out to get supplies has turned out to be traumatic. Don’t be naive enough to think it couldn’t happen to you. Here’s how the scam works: Two very hot 20/21 year-old girls come over to your car as you are packing your shopping into the trunk. They both start wiping your windshield with a rag and Windex, in their skimpy T-shirts. It is impossible not to look.

When you thank them and offer them a tip, they say ‘No’ and instead ask you for a ride to another Aldi. You agree and they get in the backseat.

On the way, they start undressing. Then one of them climbs over into the front seat and starts crawling all over you, while the other one steals your wallet. I had my wallet stolen July 4th, 9th, 10th, twice on the 15th, 17th, 20th, & 24th 29th. Also August 1st, 4th, twice on the 8th, three times last Saturday and very likely again this weekend. P.S. Aldi has wallets on sale $2.99 each.

WHAT IS PROBUS

In Pesident Richards message, he mentioned an approach about forming another Roseville Probus Club. It therefor maybe appropriate that some history and facts behind Probus are known to the members.

PROBUS is a local, national, and international association of retired people who come together in non-political, non-sectarian, non-profit, autonomous clubs which provide regular opportunities for members to meet others in similar circumstances, with similar levels of interest, make new friends, and maintain and expand their interests. Probus Clubs can be made up of men, women or be mixed (men and women) clubs. It is normal for the spouses of club members and widows of former members to be encouraged to participate in the social activities.

By 2018, there were over 400,000 members in approximately 4,000 Probus clubs worldwide.

The Probus Club movement was formed in the United Kingdom in 1965. The Probus movement had its beginnings in two clubs, both created by members of Rotary Club. The Rotary Club president arranged the first meeting and 45 men attended. This club was known as ‘The Campus Club’, the name deriving from the fact that the meeting place was facing the centre of town,

The Probus club was conceived by three businessmen travelling to London by train. The three were reaching the point of retirement and realized they had a need for fellowship. In May 1966 a Committee was formed with Harold Blanchard as chairman, who is seen as one of the ‘Father Figures’ of Probus along with James Raper.

The name “Probus” was suggested by a member who took the first three letters from ‘PROfessional and BUSiness’. It had the advantage that it was a Latin word from which ‘probity’ is derived. The Probus Club of Caterham was met with success, and became known among other Rotary Clubs with new clubs being founded.

In 1974, Probus expanded into New Zealand and by 1976 the idea had spread to Australia.

Although Probus membership has its greatest concentrations in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, clubs today exist in many parts of the world, including the United States, Belgium, India, South Africa and several other countries in Africa and Asia.
