Bulletin Volume; 28 Issue No 14 23 January 2018

Rotary Club of Roseville Chase Inc.

MEETING on 23 JANUARY 2018 ( 6.00 pm for 6.30 pm)

GUEST SPEAKER - Dr DAVID HANCOCK The Outback Oral Tooth Health (TOOTH) Program

TOOTH provides dental support services across some of Australia’s most isolated communities.

David is a dentist in Newcastle. His involvement with the dental offshoot of RFDS began January 2013, when he and his wife, Jenny, volunteered their services to fill a staffing gap. That’s when he got to deal first hand with the harsh itinerant conditions of a TOOTH volunteer, coming to grips with logistical issues, among other things, that he could not have previously imagined.

The TOOTH program employs a dentist and dental therapist who live in Dubbo, and flies them into one of five remote communities daily on a rotational basis so that the clinic is operational once a week. In some cases, the “clinic” can take the form of a truck that is internally partitioned and furnished like an actual surgery: X-ray room, waiting room, operatory and even a mini clean area complete with autoclave and sterilised instruments.

“The part where you get to fly to all these remote places to do dental work week in and week out is quite interesting but the work itself can be unpredictable, especially when there’s a fair bit of no-show,” he says helplessly.

The TOOTH program is currently funded by the RFDS and receives support from dental suppliers that sponsor dental consumables, filling materials and other preventative type products, but there is a dire need for funding of other costs if the service is to continue.

The Board approved a donation $5,000 in December 2017 which will bepresented to David on the night.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

I hope all members had a very lovely Christmas and look forward to a great 2018 and beyond.

VolunteeringWe should reflect on the value of volunteering and be proud to know that you / we are a small part of the 6 million Australians that volunteer each year that contributes to the Australian economy in a huge way.

Research by Dr Lisel O’Dwyer of the Flinders University has calculated that volunteering contributes a whopping $290 billion to the Australian economy each year, almost 50% more than the $200 billion estimated two years ago.

In the research mentioned, this is made up of firefighters, Surf life savers and the lives that have been indirectly saved through volunteers, such as Meals on Wheels, volunteers finding an elderly customer unconscious at home.Be proud in what you do and keep up the good work.

The District ConferenceThe District Conference is only 6-7 weeks away and is being held at the Fairmont Resort, Leura. It will be a most interesting weekend so please make a commitment NOW to attend. There are a few of us going up for the day so why not join us.(Note; Full details about the Conference are on pages 13 to 17)

Bunnings BBQ and the hot weatherThere was an item in Google News recently that a BBQ site in Melbourne was cancelled due to the extreme heat wave conditions. If we ever have a booking (particularly at Belrose) on an extremely hot day, we will pull the plug as the Club and Board have a responsibility in providing service under safe working conditions.(Note; A copy of the sign proposed to be displayed is on the following page)

Meetings Twice MonthlyAt our first club forum, I would like some discussion on how members feel about the bi-monthly meetings.

President Peter

Below is the sign referred to in President Peter’s Report

It seems from Peter’s report that the club, and not Bunnings, will make the decision to cancel a sausage sizzle because of extreme heat conditions..

SPEAKERS PROGRAM

Ian Robertson, though recouperating, is still the active Program Committee chair (assisted by Norm Gibson and Stuart Frith) and would welcome any suggestions of guest speakers, and how to contact them.

Finding interesting, topical and available speakers for our meetings is something every member can and should assist with.

If you look through the Calendar for the next 6 months (page 20) you will note that at this stage not many meetings have an allocated speaker - not that its essential that we need a speaker every meeting, as we still need to have Forums and members talks.

Ian may currently be negotiating with potential speakers for specific meetings. There could be ongoing discussions or offers already made to potential speakers by Ian, and he currently waiting for confirmation of availability. So its essential that you liaise with Ian (0414 416 917, or [email protected]) to advise him of your suggested speaker, or before offering any potential speaker a specific night.

It would also greatly assist Ian and the Bulletin Editor if you seek a CV from any guest speaker you may be talking with.

VOLUNTEERING

President Peter has some comments in his report regarding volunteers and the value and contribution of their work. Its also notable that Shane Fitzsimmons, the Rural Fire Services Commissioner, whose organisation depends enormously on volunteers, is a keynote speaker at the District Conference in March.

It was somewhat surprising to read this article (extract) by Chris Kenny from a recent daily newspaper, of some opposing views and comments on volunteering.

“For all the millions of conversations and communications happening every minute of every day, there are two distinct national conversations occurring. They are totally divergent in source and substance and both lay claim to truth. Yet only one can be true; only one can be rooted in reality. (Cont. next page)

Rotary Club of Roseville Chase Bulletin 8

Chris Kenny further wrote;

“Perhaps no discussion better demonstrates this divide than the response to anarticle published in The Sydney Morning Herald last week about volunteering. It was based on a speech by Catherine Walsh, billed as a writer and teacher, who argued that volunteering was counterproductive, undercut paid work and relieved governments of their responsibilities.

Walsh urged us to “stop volunteering” and to campaign for laws to “abandon” fundraising, volunteers and charities so that future generations could be relieved of the “expectation” to support these “inefficient” systems. I don’t know what was more astonishing, that an adult would say or write such a thing or that a media organisation would publish it uncritically.

When I read excerpts on radio the reaction was understandable. People from all walks of life who were volunteers or had benefited from their generosity called to voice their dismay. State emergency service workers, fire fighters, library volunteers, art gallery guides, Meals on Wheels workers, St Vincent de Paul helpers — the list was endless. They were astonished at the lack of gratitude, and the stupidity.

How could this country function without rural fire volunteers, Country Women’s Association branches or surf lifesavers? Conversely, how could we ever amass enough tax to run such vital community organisations as paid professional outfits? Iti s as insulting as it is absurd.

Yet it perfectly encapsulates the schism. Only someone deeply embedded in the publicly funded political/media class — that artificially created reality — could entertain or share such thoughts. The only volunteers Walsh admired were activists protesting to change laws and policies. This truly is bizarro world. Walsh lauded the attention-seekers and troublemakers while she dismissed the people who quietly improve the daily lives of fellow citizens.

It is not hard to see which view is right. And it is not a matter of opinion. The facts support the case for volunteers. Whether you assess the quality of their outcomes — tangible and intangible — or the cost of replacing their services with paid employees, you can see the inestimable value of their contribution to the nation. We know the overwhelming sway of public opinion would support the volunteers.”
