President’s Report & Induction SpeechPRESIDENT’S REPORTA new year, a new President, some new ideas but with a smaller membership. Those who attended the Changeover voted it an enjoyable evening. We were very honoured in having the District Governor Peter Ward and Assistant District Governor Rob Byrne in attendance and I thank all those members who helped to make it what it was.Congratulations to the award winners and in particular to David Brand, Pam Campbell and Ross Symons. With a smaller membership we all must put in that little extra into the club. The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise. Remember Service above self and it is a sentiment that can be applied to membership as well. It’s not too much to ask a couple of hours at Bunnings for the BBQ, turning up to a few Dinner meetings. To be able to say I am a Rotarian is surely worth being committed to our ideals. Ask yourself Am I a good Rotarian.

I look forward to my year as your President. Let’s make it a great one.

President Peter

Editor’s note; Congratulations to President Peter McKeown on being awarded the Paul Harris Fellow Sapphire Pin, for his outstanding contribution towards the Meals on Wheels project.

INDUCTION SPEECHPRESENTATION AND THANKS TO PP PETER LEWIS

May I firstly congratulate Peter Ward as our new District Governor.

Last Saturday was the District Changeover attended by Greg & Ann Muldoon, Neil Howie and myself. It’s attending functions like these that you can learn so much about and the extent of Rotary.Peter, I look forward to working closely with you through our Assistant Governor Rob Byrne. It was interesting to learn more about the Foundation and the work with Polio plus.

Our club owes a lot to Peter for his year as President. It was a very difficult one brought about by falling membership, and the loss of the golf day which was a very big income earner for us. Irrespective you and your Board have continued to be very busy with all our projects and grants, Community services, Youth services.

Page 5: &OXERI5RVHYLOOH&KDVH · 2017/7/11  · Your Board have granted some $ 30,000 and left my Board with approx. $30,000 for the ensuring year. To Peter and Chris, thank you or your great

Rotary Club of Roseville Chase Bulletin 3

Our pluses in the club have been the MOW, The Comedy Show and the Task Force Resolutions on the future of the club and membership and you can read more about our projects in the Club Bulletin on your table.

Peter, you have always been approachable and handled the role exceptionally well. Your Board have granted some $ 30,000 and left my Board with approx. $30,000 for the ensuring year.

To Peter and Chris, thank you or your great efforts, enjoy being an ordinary member, you have done yourself proud. On behalf of the Members of the Rotary Club of Roseville Chase I would like you to accept this small token of our appreciation.

THE YEAR AHEADWe now enter a new year, with some big changes ahead starting with: • 2 meetings a month;• A much smaller Club Board, but with directors having a leading role in running their portfolios and we will continue with our traditional projects.• The reintroduction of the ROTARY THANKS prior to sitting down. And when sitting down, please fill up the Head Table FIRST. There is nothing more embarrassing than to have tables full and the top table with three people.

I would like to see more social activities to make the club more inviting to members and prospective members and to this end I am looking for four or five ladies to step up and form a committee purely to organise social outings, a theatre night, a restaurant night, a visit to the Art Gallery or just a picnic.

We must remember that we are competing with the Probus Club which only meets once a month, no service work, and is purely social and have the numbers to attract good speakers.

Page 6: &OXERI5RVHYLOOH&KDVH · 2017/7/11  · Your Board have granted some $ 30,000 and left my Board with approx. $30,000 for the ensuring year. To Peter and Chris, thank you or your great

Our Sergeant, Ian Garrard will have 2 permanent Corporals, Sue Ward and Allan Farrar. Their role will be not only to have fines sessions but to- - Maintain order – - Allow the President to focus on the meeting - Ensure the room is ready and work to prevent anything that might detract from the dignity or prestige of the club.We must become very active in membership, it’s not just for the membership committee but all of us.

Remember we want to attract new younger professional people, soyour personal attention to presentation in dress and friendship is important. If you know or meet neighbours, work collegues, or family members or people at the Bunnings BBQ, talk to them about Rotary, Encourage them to attend a meeting.

CLOSING REMARKSIn closing I must thank you all for your attendance particularly,

SWAPANA PRASAD, past Assistant District Governor ROB BYRNE, Assistant District Governor, and especially PETER WARD, District Governor and congratulations on your changeover last Saturday night.

I congratulate those who recognised with Paul Harris Fellow awards and Sapphire pins. Again thanks to Peter & Chris Lewis for a job well done. And to all of you attending tonight and your vote of confidence in voting me your President.

MEETING OF 27 JUNE 2017GUEST SPEAKER - TED PLUMMER

Ted attended a meeting on 27 June 2017 and was a representative of the Community Relations at Sydney Airport. He had a presentation showing that the history of the Airport, which opened in 1999 ,and is one of the oldest continually operating Airports in the world.

During his presentation he advised that over 42 million passengers flew in and out of the Airport. He described how the first flight occurred by Mr J J Hammond before the official opening of the Airport and that there are approximately 160,000 passengers a day that use the Airport. He also advised that by 2034 there will be over 507,000 jobs directly or indirectly associated with the Airport. He also advised that the Airport provides approximately 6.4% of the NSW economy.

He also commented on why the company running Mascot did not wish to bid for the operation of the new Badgery’s Creek Airport having regard to the high risk and lack of return to the shareholders in the initial period of the operation.

He indicated that the authority has reduced its carbon omission by approximately 25.8% over the years and believes that it will continue to do so into the future. The figures which he provided showed there is a genuine need for a second Airport in the Sydney basin with the projected increase in air traffic over the next 20 years.

They anticipate that the major increase of tourism will come from South East Asia and more specifically from China as the middle class Chinese become more willing to travel.

Ted has a law degree and a science degree but chose to operate in the Community Relationship area notwithstanding his other degrees and qualifications.

Meeting on 22 August 2017.AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL MARITIME MUSEUM

Venessa Weedon

Australians have always had close links with the sea. In 1975 a museums inquiry commissioned by the Australian Government recommended that ‘...priority be given to a national maritime museum in Sydney’. In 1984 an ambitious Darling Harbour redevelopment program was unveiled. The museum would stand adjacent to the historic 1903 Pyrmont Bridge, now a pedestrian link to the city.

Prominent Australian architect Philip Cox AO designed the museum building and construction started in 1986. Prime Minister Bob Hawke opened the Australian National Maritime Museum on 29 November 1991. US President George Bush, with Australia’s new Prime Minister Paul Keating, dedicated the museum’s USA Gallery on 1 January 1992. HM Queen Elizabeth visited the museum in February 1992.

Back PageThe Scotsman’s Kilt

Well a Scotsman clad in kilt left a bar one evening fair,And one could tell by how he walked that he’d drunk more than his share. He fumbled round until he could no longer keep his feet,Then he stumbled off into the grass to sleep beside the street.

About that time two young and lovely girls just happened by,And one says to the other with a twinkle in her eye.See yon sleeping Scotsman so strong and handsome built,I wonder if it’s true what they don’t wear beneath the kilt.

They crept up on that sleeping Scotsman quiet as could be,Lifted up his kilt about an inch so they could see.And there behold, for them to view, beneath his Scottish skirt,Was nothing more than God had graced him with upon his birth.

They marvelled for a moment, then one said we must be gone,Let’s leave a present for our friend, before we move along. As a gift they left a blue silk ribbon, tied into a bow,Around the bonnie star, the Scot’s kilt did lift and show.

Now the Scotsman woke to nature’s call and stumbled toward the trees,Behind a bush, he lifts his kilt and gawks at what he sees,And in a startled voice he says to what’s before his eyes.O lad I don’t know where you’ve been but I see you won first prize.

The value of an Engineer

There was an engineer who had an exceptional gift for fixing all things mechanical. After serving his company loyally for over 30 years, he retired.

Several years later the company contacted him regarding a seemingly impossible problem it was having with one of its multimillion-dollar machines. He spent a day studying the huge machine. At the end of the day, he marked a small “x” in chalk on a particular component of the machine and proudly stated, “This is where your problem is.”

The part was replaced and the machine worked perfectly again. The company received a bill for $50,000 from the engineer for his service. They demanded an itemized accounting of his charges.

The engineer responded with the following: “Chalk: $1. Knowing where to put it: $49,999.”
