The week before the October half term is traditionally our Health Week. Each year we have a different theme. This year's Health Week has a focus on the NHS celebrating the achievements over the past 70 years and promoting the work of the people who do so much for the well being of us all.

Children in Y5 and Y6 are to visit the East Riding Hospital for an Occupational Health and Physiotherapy experience.

Other classes are to have workshops in school provided by NHS staff giving a personal perspective on the NHS and their work.

We know that many of our parents work in the NHS in many different capacities.

If you are interested and have some availability in the week beginning 22nd October, please email Mrs. Grainger who coordinates the week for us every year [email protected].

We will be delighted to hear from you.

We shall also be promoting healthy lifestyle decisions, diet and fitness.

It is worth taking a moment to note that the children at Molescroft Primary School are an extremely active and healthy bunch. Their take up of sports and fitness activities in school and outside is impressive and of course since last year all children in KS2 have been enjoying extra, weekly fitness lessons.

On the next page is the monthly advert for the “Specials” we offer to introduce different menus to our pupils. There is also a reminder that we offer a very special discount of 5 meals in a week for just £10. Pupils always have access to the salad bar with wraps and the potato, rice or pasta can be matched with the salad. Children may choose from the range of salad or vegetables to accompany the hot meal. The dessert offering includes a fresh fruit salad in addition to the advertised options. The children can have as much fruit salad, salad or vegetables as they would like and may return for second portions.I realise that after three years of free meals those moving to Year 3 find it a shock to have to pay for the lunch, but I do believe we offer excellent value and quality. Remember, parents and carers can come and try our offer for themselves. Basically if we serve 300 meals a day we break even, any loss has to be paid from the school budget. So if you are currently packing up, perhaps reconsider our meals option. Many staff are taking school meals as do I. They really are delicious and are designed by the Local Authority to offer a proper balanced menu over each week.

SCHOOL MEALS By supporting the school meals not only are your children enjoying well balanced options, it supports the school too.

Our Partnership Moles We are extremely grateful to the following Partners who are working with us to provide the best education, facilities and experiences for our pupils.

School Meals are Excellent Value.Any Parent/Carer or Grandparent who would like to come to school and enjoy dinner with their children is welcome to do so. Just telephone the office before 10:00 am. on or before the school day* to reserve a meal. Please bring photo ID with you. Adult meals cost £3.50. A child’s meal costs £2.50. (A full week offer of £10 is available.) It is excellent value, and by educating children away from a diet of crisps and processed food we are together building a lifetime of good eating habits and healthy hearts. DINNERS MUST BE PREPAID, no more than £2.50 will be accepted in arrears. Money can either be paid on line at School Money or be sent to the classroom in a labelled envelope. PLEASE DO NOT SEND LOOSE MONEY. Each room has a post box through which letters and money (providing it is in a labelled sealed envelope) can be sent to the school office. Meals are advertised on the website and there is always the salad with two wraps option. Children can self serve salad, vegetables and fruit salad and can have second portions.

* Please note; there are occasions e.g at Christmas during the show week, and on sporting tournament days when it is not possible to accommodate extra adult guests at lunchtime. The same applies for the first five school days in September when the priority is to reestablish systems for our pupils particularly our new starters.

HISTORY DAY 2018 The Molescroft Time Machine On October 19th,2018, we are having our annual Molescroft World History Day. This will be an immersive history experience for your children and will truly bring their history curriculum to life.

For this to truly be a journey back in time, my feeling is the children and teachers should dress up in the chosen era to take on a character for the day. With this in mind, we ask, if possible, for the children to begin to think about organising a costume for the day at home. This does not mean we expect you to go out and spend money on a costume, we hope that the majority of items the children would already have access to, and in some cases, they will be making items in school.

To reiterate again, there is no expectation that parents spend money on a costume. If anything, they will be all the more creative for being homemade. I am certain this will make all the difference in inspiring the children. The themes are as follows:

As our Foundation Stage focus on the history of their own families, we would like them to come dressed as their own grandparent or relative. We will be sharing about the types of jobs they are doing or have done.

The children can come to school dressed up in the style of their family members work attire/uniform.

In Year 1 we will be looking at famous explorers including Neil Armstrong, Christopher Columbus, Captain Cook, Amy Johnson and Sir Edmund Hillary. On history day we will be stepping into the footsteps of an explorer so the children will need to come dressed as an explorer. This could be as simple as an explorer’s hat and sensible exploring clothes or dressed as a famous explorer of their choice.

Year 2 study the Great Fire of London, covering the Stuart period of Britain. This is perhaps the trickiest, so plain colours of brown and grey and perhaps deep reds. Boys could wear a flat cap, white shirt and trousers, and girls a dress or plain skirt in the above colours. Try to avoid logos or vibrant patterns!

The life of a Roman soldier is what our Year 3 children will experience! If they can bring in material that can be made into a tabard in various colours suited to that period of time, red, brown and grey. This can be worn over school trousers as the weather maybe cold and they will be embarking in outdoor activities.

In Year 4, our focus is Ancient Egypt. Using a white sheet the children can create a simple white

tunic (similar to a toga ). This should ideally have a brown belt/ tie around the middle. Sandals/ flip flops would be good footwear (depending on weather - again school trousers and a plain t-shirt underneath). The Ancient Egyptians also adorned themselves with Jewellery/amulets and wide necked necklaces. If children want, they can come dressed as other key Egyptian characters. Pharaohs, Egyptian Soldiers, Farmers... even Mummies. There are plenty of pictures and examples online to give you inspiration!

Welcome to The Stone Age! In Year 5 we would like children to come dressed as some of our earliest ancestors. Plain colours and materials such as leather and hessian in browns and natural shades. Stone Age man would have worn simple tunics tied with belts or simple string/twine. Some faux fur might be a nice addition and could be strapped over shoes. Hair could also be a little untidy for added effect! Again, children could wear school trousers and t-shirt underneath.

Year 6 study the local history of Hull and in particular the fishing and whaling industry. Children could dress as a traditional fisherman, or choose a character of significance from Hull’s history such as William Wilberforce or of course Amy Johnson.

GOLDEN AWARDS Maintaining our Sporting Credentials

For the fourth year in a row we have been awarded the Gold Standard by the School Games Award. This reflected that in KS2 over 54% of children were engaged in extra curricular sport. In addition over the past year we held nine intra-school sports events including the two regular sports days and associated events in

archery, athletics, football, gymnastics, rugby league, swimming, table tennis, tennis and cross-country.We attended inter-school sports events in thirteen different sports including: archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, netball, orienteering, rounders, rugby league, swimming, cross-country and in sports hall athletics. Some of these sports saw our involvement in multiple competitions. We sent B teams to over five different sports and C teams to two different

sports.Over 33% of the pupils are involved in sports leadership and support and we have at least eight links to local

sports clubs.

As always I am indebted to all the staff, the sports coaches, the leaders of clubs and most important Mr. Wood and Mrs. McClarron who lead PE across the school. The minimum criteria is listed below. With the soon to be completed all weather sports pitch, we shall be able to extend our sporting provision even further in the years ahead.

R SAMARA’S AID UPDATEA message from Mrs. Harrison

“I just want to let you know that the container of clothing and medical supplies from Beverley has now safely arrived in Syria. We are waiting for the go-ahead to take it into another city with desperately needy people. There are a few more hurdles to get over, but we are hoping it will be on its last leg very soon. The number of people needing urgent help in Syria is rising all the time, and there are huge threats once again to civilians in lots of places. One place in particular is under threat of great violence and bloodshed and this is where we are hoping to send the majority of this Aid. The hospital equipment will be used in the hospital  we have set up.

Samara’s Aid Appeal has now sent 102 containers of Aid to the Middle East, 3 of these have been from Beverley! A fourth is coming to me at the end of September and will be filled in October, all being well.Thank you once again for your support. We couldn’t do any of this on our own. We are so thankful for those who have stood with

us to send compassion.Best wishes,Sarah Harrison”

Samara’s Aid is one of the charities chosen by our pupils following the 2017 Charity Fundraising

FRUIT & MILK SHAKES

Fruit is on sale each morning break to children

in Y3 to Y6. Various prices.

Milk Shakes are also available each lunch break to all children.

Once again thanks go to Mrs. Hunsley, our

extremely flexible Cook, for facilitating this.

Children in the Foundation Year, Year 1 and Year 2

continue to receive free fruit each day provided by the

government.

WALK, CYCLE or SCOOT TO SCHOOL October Campaign In conjunction with the East Riding LA, we are specially promoting a Walk, Cycle or Scoot to school campaign. Actually I am rather proud of the numbers at Molescroft who actually do this and I also know that parents encourage exercise for their children. Meanwhile an assertive campaign will be followed in October regarding parking on the yellow lines on Molescroft

Avenue. These are here to keep a completely clear view of the Crossing Patrol.

Most drivers are totally respectful of these, however a small minority are not. One even picking up on top of the crossing. Tickets and fines will be issued and there will be photographs taken.

If you have a disabled badge, please park as far down away from the crossing patrol as you are able.

Those driving to school and dropping off/picking you, please do not obstruct the view of the crossing patrol.

R MARATHON MOLES RUNNING THE HULL MARATHON FOR OUR PUPILS. Thankfully the rain held off for most of the run.

On Sunday 23rd September 2018, 9 teams of Mums and Members of staff from Molescroft Primary School aka 'THE MARATHON MOLES’ ran the Hull Marathon. There were 4 relay teams each running a 1/4 of the marathon, 4 half marathon teams each running 13.1 miles and Miss Spencer running the whole Marathon.  With some shame, I stood on the side lines on Boothferry Road and watched the determined and inspiring efforts of our Marathon Moles. The Marathon Moles are hoping to raise more funds for the FOMS projects which enhance the resources available to all our children. Currently we are aiming to raise money to purchase a further 120  iPads for the children.  If you have completed a Sponsor Form now is the time to return it or go on line at “JustGiving”. It’s not too late.Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the Friends Association. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

Donating to the JustGiving page is easy - just follow this link and click Donate:

Have you ever considered becoming a teacher?

There is a growing shortage of teachers and there are many places available for the next generation of teacher trainees. You may be aware that the Teaching School “Riding Forward” based at Molescroft Primary School, leads a Teacher Training Programme called “School Direct”. Many of the trainees have gone on to work in schools across Hull and the East Riding. The programme allows the alliance of schools across county, the opportunity to further enhance teacher training provision.  Riding Forward has developed exciting and effective programmes with a highly regarded local Higher Education Institution, the University of Hull. Their programmes last for one academic year (September-July), during which time trainees will be based in a host school with excellent experience in ITT alongside attending PGCE lectures at University of Hull. School Direct places are available in well regarded Primary schools within the East Riding. Trainees will also enjoy a contrasting school placement in one of the schools working with the alliance. School Direct programmes have been designed to give the next generation of teachers the necessary skills to become an effective classroom practitioner. On completion of training, trainees will be awarded a PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate of Education) with QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) which includes 60 credits towards Masters Level. Graduates of the Riding Forward School Direct programmes will be confident, knowledgeable, creative and reflective teachers, ready to embark on a rewarding and fulfilling career. Contact Jenny Lines for more information 01482 679139 [email protected]

SUCCESSES FOR POPPY B and JESSICA M Molescroft children continue to impress across many sports. Poppy attended the Netball screening for the U12 Humberside Development Academy. She’s over the moon as she’s found out she’s gained a place. She’ll be attending extra training sessions throughout the year with other children from across Humberside who show potential. We wish her every success and we are always waiting

for our first Olympic or Commonwealth Mole.

Meanwhile, Jessica swims for the swimming team Beverley Barracudas. She has competed in swimming galas throughout the year, which resulted in her qualifying for 7 races at the Yorkshire finals. Just reaching the Yorkshire finals is an achievement in itself, as she was competing against some of the best swimmers in the country. The finals took place in Leeds. Jessica achieved 6 personal bests, and handled the competition very professionally.

We always enjoy hearing about the sporting

achievements of our moles.

HOW ABOUT A CAREER IN TEACHING? We are training the next generation of teachers in partnership with the University of Hull.

CALLING ALL SCIENTISTS, ENGINEERS TECHNOLOGICAL EMPLOYEES New S.T.E.M Club

In the cold months of January and February we are proposing to launch a Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths Club: STEM.

It will run on a Thursday evening. We would like to have a different guest each week who could introduce a different activity each week based on their work. It may be a science

experiment or perhaps making a model rocket out of a milk bottle - and firing it! We are really open to suggestions.

If you would be interested in being one of our guest experts, we would love to hear from you. Please email Mrs. Cameron to express an interest [email protected]

TESCO COLLECTION Please support Woodmansey CE Primary School We were fortunate to win £5000 for our Wild Area through the Tesco Bag Sale fund. Our sister school is now in the running, but obviously only has 69 pupils compared to our 416. We ask you please to consider putting your counter in the Woodmansey CE Slot.

A Special Meeting for Parents/Carers of the Foundation Stage

On Thursday 4th October FY Parents/carers are invited to attend one of two meetings explaining how we go about teaching phonics and number in school. It will give tips on how to help at home and what to expect from the school.

The first meeting will start at 4pm and an identical second meeting will run at 5:00pm.

A creche will be available, but places must be booked and are not available for pre school children.

RVITAL MEETING FOR PARENT/CARERS OF YEAR 2 REMINDER Meeting for Y2 Parents Monday 1st October 2018 at 6pm

Parents/Carers of Year 2 children will be aware that in 2019 the children will be assessed against national expectations. Parents/Carers are invited to attend a meeting designed to explain what to expect and how best pupils and parents/carers can be prepared for these important tests and assessments.

Absence for Y2 pupils will NOT be authorised in May and June.

Please note absence will NOT be authorised for Y6 pupils in April or May for any reason. The Y6 tests will be taken in the week commencing 13th May 2019.

HARVEST FESTIVAL A chance to give thanks We are to hold a special Harvest Festival Assembly on Monday 8th October 2018. I once again invite pupils to bring some gifts of fresh fruit or vegetables to form a display in the hall. A couple of apples or a cabbage for example will be more than acceptable. This will form a visual basis for our thanks for the harvest we so often take for granted. Alternatively anyone wishing to send tinned or dried food may do so. These items will

be sent to the Food Bank for distribution.

At 3:00pm. on Thursday 11th October 2018 a special market will be set up on the South Playground where our Y2 children will be selling the produce to parents/carers including home made soup. Prices will be set competitively in comparison with local supermarkets. All money raised will go to this year’s Charity Fund Raising effort (November).

PARENTS HAVE FOUND THESE MEETINGS EXTREMELY USEFUL, AND SOMEWHAT SURPRISING… You will probably be amazed by the expectations which are placed on our children these days. It is way above what was ever expected in our Primary School days.

CYCLE TRAINING PROGRAMME FOR YEAR 5 Please contact the school if you need assistance with this programme, particularly with the storage of cycles.

Shortly parent/carers of Year 5 who reserved lessons in July will find out which group their child will be in for their Cycling training. The children

will have two full days of intensive training.

The programme begins on 1st October 2018

The groupings should be arranged to avoid children missing peripatetic music lessons.

These lessons save lives.

PUPIL PHOTOGRAPHS Family Night available The school photographer will be visiting again on Tuesday 9th October 2018. Like last year I have decided not to send the request form home. I shall arrange for ALL children to be photographed AND ALSO all siblings to be photographed together. Parents will no longer have to book a photo in advance. I shall however be relying on children knowing if they have a brother or sister in school! I will not

take responsibility for children who deny knowledge of their younger brother or sister! Parents are not obliged to purchase the photographs.

The Family photo session to which anyone can come will be operating from 4:30pm to 7pm on the same date. This is the ideal opportunity for families to arrange for a group photo including mum, dad and the much loved family pet and an opportunity to catch anyone who may have slipped the net.

KEVIN’S DIARY It’s a school dog’s Life “I am settling well into my school home and I love my new bed under Mrs Jameson’s desk. In the morning before school I go for a long walk.  When I come into school I like to curl up in my bed and fall asleep whilst I listen to everyone starting the school day. I really enjoy laying at the office door and watching everyone walk past after assembly. My teeth are growing and one of my favourite things to do is chew, including chewing my new lead into two pieces, I don’t think I was supposed to do that! On a Thursday evening I go to puppy school, since starting I have learnt to sit, lay, and come back when called. I love playing with the other puppies before we start my class, especially Bruiser and Alfie who are just a little bit younger than I am.”

I have been told that when I have completed my first lessons I will be able to start visiting classrooms and hearing the lovely stories that you can all read. I think I am also going to enjoy music. I have heard lots of interesting sounds and I think the singing I hear is lovely. Maybe I can join in with a woof or two! So far though I haven’t found my voice. I love the field and I am really looking forward to watching the sports. I think I will be good at football, but you might not get the ball off me!

Mr. Loncaster has said that I am being a very good boy and that soon I will be able to meet you all when you arrive at school.

Lots of woofs, Kevin.

I would like to thank you all for the wonderful responses received about our latest staff appointment, Kevin. I was particularly grateful for the support from families where a child has a fear of dogs. The recognition that through Kevin, together we can possibly help children to overcome fears was exactly what we hoped we may be able to achieve.

Kevin has been on his very best behaviour and is acclimatising to the school very well indeed.

We look forward to when he can start to be more involved in the life of the children.

A great Christmas Present. ... sorry for mentioning Christmas more than once in this newsletter!

Review of our Key Rules Every three years the children review their school rules.

The children in every class have completed a workshop to consider the three key rules. They looked at the “Our Rights” and discussed if these matched our expectations.  Then children considered the following:“What things happen sometimes in class which upset you?”“What things happen sometimes when playing outside which upset you?”The children then looked at the three rules and crossed off the

things they had listed that involved breaking a rule. They then considered if there was anything left.If there was anything left the children discussed how the rules could be altered.

Finally the children considered if there is a way to make the rules shorter without losing something important? The results were fed back and what appears on the next two pages is the result. The children have made some subtle but very thoughtful changes. Anyone wishing to comment should email [email protected]

As parents and Governors, you are also invited to

reflect on the experiences of children at this school and reflect on the the 3

Key Rules as the children have.

MOLESCROFT IN BLOOM Yet another Golden Award

Once again we have

been awarded

the Golden Rose from the

Yorkshire in Bloom Young People’s

Award for the 8th time. The Judges wrote the following.

Molescroft Primary School is an eco-school. It is clear just stepping onto the premises that environmental issues and horticulture is embedded in all that happens at this impressive school. We were shown a delightful 10 minute video which evidenced the complete all year round work which goes on in the school by every class.

The young people were impressively knowledgeable and enthusiastic from the very young to those in their final year. We were shown the tubs that had been created to follow the World Cup theme using the flags and culture of the country to create each individual tub. A lot of thought and research had gone into creating these wonderful tubs.

The wildlife area and outdoor classroom is very well used. The vegetable garden well stocked and it was interesting to hear what was the favourite food cooked from their own produce – tomato soup, cooked in the pupil kitchen.

The knowledge the young people have, at all ages, is impressive. They have a water rota and there is a compost team. All angles have been looked at and utilised. They are a credit to the school, community and the Eco Team Tutors and Headteacher, we are sure you are very proud of your young people and their enthusiasm.

Well done to all our green fingered Moles and the leadership team of Mrs. Kilford, Mrs. Iveson, Mrs. Goff and Mrs Hulse. Thank you all for another Golden Year.Judges feedback on areas for consideration It may be worth considering creating an interpretation board to go into the wildlife area.

Consider leaving areas of the field un-mown to explore a wildflower meadow increasing bio-diversity enabling the children to collect data of species. Whilst we believe you have excellent links with the community we werenot totally clear on all the forms of communication you have.

So we have a clear direction for our future developments.Thank you also to the children and pupils who turned out in August for the Britain in Bloom judging. Some even ended up being interviewed for Calendar on ITV. Beverley will hear of the result later this month.
