“School days, school days…” Well, it’s about time to see school busses and childrenwith backpacks again! The end of August marks the beginning of another schoolyear in the local schools, reminding us at Zion’s that Sunday School also beginssoon.

As this newsletter reaches you, parents and children are in the throes of findingnew clothes to replace the ones outgrown through the summer. New clothes, newshoes – and days consumed with homework and school. A break for parents means

less bicycling, playing ball in the corner lot, or running through the sprinkler for thechildren.

Everything changes. Everything and everyone grows old.

Throughout the Season after Pentecost, all of the green Sundays, we have heard in the absolutionfrom the 2nd letter to the Corinthian church, “If anyone is new in Christ, there is a new creation!Everything old has passed away, everything has become new!” (from 2 Cor. 5.17) Closely followedby “you are a new creation in Christ”, we make the sign of the cross over ourselves in that absolu-tion, reminding us physically and mentally, that because of Jesus the Christ, God has made us new,but new for what?

Chapter 5 of 2 Corinthians highlights the Christian desire to live by faith: “…we do not lose heart…though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed…” Sometimes namingthe obvious helps put life into perspective. None of us is getting younger, yet, somehow, by God’s

grace for sure, followers of Jesus do not give up hope. In fact, the older we get, the deeper ourfaith, because we have had the time to trust in God.

Further down in the same chapter, the writer reminds us that Christ “died for all”, and that promiseurges us on to live, and indeed, die for others: “…he died for all, so that those who live might nolonger live for themselves, but for him who dies and was raised for them.” In the dying to self, fol-lowers of Jesus become ambassadors for God – giving not only a message to the world, but theirvery lives.

Each week as we stand before the font, and make the sign of the cross over ourselves, we remindourselves that “in Christ” we no longer live for self, but for the sake of the world. The simple act of

tracing the cross over your body means that you are no longer in charge – God is. No longer seek-ing personal gain, the Church seeks to make Christ known to the world by acts of mercy, peace, and justice.

Imagine a Church that believed God was in charge! That would be a miracle, indeed.

    Peace,

    + Pr. Tim
