Recently, I read a book by Johann Hari called, Chasing the Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs. Before getting the book, I had watched a TED talk on the internet by the same young man. He talked so provocatively that immediately I started to research his ideas about addiction and sobriety. From that video, I remember, “The opposite of addiction is not sobriety; the opposite of addiction is community.” Those words struck me as at once odd and delightful. For Hari, the key to overcoming drug problems is not punishment, but community; in the Church we would say, not Law but Grace. His book has proved just as delightful and odd as his talk, I highly recommend it to anyone. Certainly, Western culture has much to learn from this young man’s re- search. Maybe the Church has something to learn from him? During this month of November, the Church winds down one liturgical year and prepares for a new one. This year, we end Mark’s short, earthy Gospel that paints a picture of Jesus who is all too hu- man, and prepare ourselves for the social justice of Luke’s Gospel. Whereas Jesus, in Mark, cast out demons and showed the world how to be authentically “human”, in Luke, by contrast, shows forth Jesus’ humanity quite clearly through communion with others. Right at the beginning of this month, on the Festival of All Saints, the Church recognizes the im- portance of the Body of Christ, mysteriously “knit together” in a way that only God could accom- plish. As God’s people, we acknowledge that in order to share the Good News with others, we must share our experiences, warts and all, with others. In that sharing, we must also share how God has handled us with compassion, and care, not more rules, and punishment. To be the culture of God, God’s people must attest to God’s justice and mercy created by the heart of Jesus, within that carefully knit Body of Christ. How can we better serve our community and the world for the sake of Jesus? How can Zion’s attest to God’s culture with compassion and grace? How can we feast on the fat things of God with every- one, without distinction, without reservation, without pre-conceived notions? Peace, Pr Tim

“On this mountain the LORD of Hosts will make for all peoples a feast of fat things…” Isaiah 25.6-9

For the prophet, the vision of the culture of God, a culture that exists in the “age to come”, exists here on earth. That culture exemplifies God’s justice and mercy; that culture also is promise and seal of God’s people: a promise that God will “wipe away all tears” one day, and a seal set upon the hearts of God’s people as an en-during hope to give the people courage to meet the struggles of “the present age”. Each prophet attests to this culture of God with words and actions. The culture that God inaugurates lives in the flesh of the people who “wait” on God, “rejoice” in God’s presence in each encounter, and recognize the feast of God’s abundance. For the prophets, God enacted the promised culture in Israel; for Christians today, we see that same culture lived through the Body of Christ.

Certainly, Western culture has much to learn from this young man’s re-search. Maybe the Church has something to learn from him?

During this month of November, the Church winds down one liturgical year and prepares for a new one. This year, we end Mark’s short, earthy Gospel that paints a picture of Jesus who is all too hu-man, and prepare ourselves for the social justice of Luke’s Gospel. Whereas Jesus, in Mark, cast out demons and showed the world how to be authentically “human”, in Luke, by contrast, shows forth Jesus’ humanity quite clearly through communion with others.

Right at the beginning of this month, on the Festival of All Saints, the Church recognizes the im-portance of the Body of Christ, mysteriously “knit together” in a way that only God could accom-plish. As God’s people, we acknowledge that in order to share the Good News with others, we must share our experiences, warts and all, with others. In that sharing, we must also share how God has handled us – with compassion, and care, not more rules, and punishment. To be the culture of God, God’s people must attest to God’s justice and mercy created by the heart of Jesus, within that carefully knit Body of Christ.

How can we better serve our community and the world for the sake of Jesus? How can Zion’s attest to God’s culture with compassion and grace? How can we feast on the fat things of God with every-one, without distinction, without reservation, without pre-conceived notions?

DEACON SUPPORT TEAM

All members should be aware of their deacon and hopefully have met him or her to discuss any con-cerns or questions you may have had. Your deacons have a sincere interest in serving your needs and en-courage you to bring your needs to the attention of Pastor, the deacon group or council whichever is appropri-ate. In turn, we trust you have an equally sincere interest in getting to know your deacon as a present and fu-ture friend and confidant. We also want to emphasize the importance of speaking with Pastor whenever the need arises. He wants to know your concerns to help provide a solution or answers to your questions. He re-mains the best resource within our congregation to share wisdom and knowledge. Deacons are not exempt from having a deacon of their own. At times we need someone willing to lis-ten and we turn to our deacon. In our bi-monthly meetings, the nine deacons discuss a variety of topics con-cerning the spiritual welfare of the congregation. Most importantly we are available for you when your needs might require someone to talk with other than Pastor Tim. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve the members of Zion’s Lutheran Church and we encourage you to reach out to your deacon whenever the need arises. Please call the church office for any assistance.

SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS

November 22nd – Children’s Music December 13th – Christmas Program ...Truly Christmas

We want to encourage more children to become involved with this program. Santa will be there...and also a special visit by Jesus will help us with our program. If all parents, grandparents and children would invite a friend to experience this program, especially anyone that has never been in a program, we would be able to spread the news and joy to many more people. Announcements will be made con-cerning practices for this event.

Our Sunday School participants will become aware of giving to Jesus through an offering collected each Sunday.

Coming Soon! Adults, parents, grandparents, and all members of Zion’s are invited to participate in a Sun-day School Class of their own. Dawn McKibben will be our excellent facilitator of this class. Date to be an-nounced!

Simply Giving Automatic Donation Program Each holiday season, Zion’s anticipates and relies on a seasonal increase in contributions. It is through the donations of every individual and family in the congregation that we are able to carry on our work now and throughout the year. If you need a convenient way to make recurring contributions or plan to make an additional gift before the end of the year, we encourage you to check out our electronic giving option, Simply Giving. As the pace of life speeds up around the holidays, you may find electronic giving a most welcome way to make contributions. To set up a recurring giving schedule, please complete a Simply Giving paper authorization form available from the church secretary or Gwen Anderson and return it to the church of-fice. Thank you for your generosity and support!
