MOLESCROFT PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 29th July 2020 Volume 19 Issue 14 The Grand Plan for September Dear Parents, Carers, Governors, Friends, Staff and Pupils Well, in a year of the bizarre, to say the least, here is the first ever August Newsletter. In another unusual move I am also sending this to our Y6 leaving families. Clearly most of this letter is not related to those who have left, but I wanted, one last time to thank the Y6 parents for their generosity of spirit and for the gifts and presentations made to me and my team. Also what has been very moving across the school, has been the many beautiful words and messages sent to all of us. They are hugely appreciated. Now we are a week and a half into the holiday, the last day for Y6 seems already like a distant memory, but again I must thank all the parents/carers of FY to Y5 for accommodating us to be able to close a day early to facilitate the most wonderful last day for Y6 and their parents in two great events. Together, and I mean the whole school community, we were able to give the Y6 children and their parents the day they deserved and a truly great, happy; at times moving; definitely memorable, and most importantly safe experience. I promised parents/carers that I would write with full plans for September, before the end of July. This letter is honouring that commitment. I appreciate that we are still some time off September and I don’t expect parents/carers to remember everything for the next 6 weeks. There is always the possibility that regulations could change again or if there was a major outbreak again of Covid19, an opening could be drastically curtailed. I am more inclined however to look to the future with positivity and am as confident as it is possible to be that the descriptions on the following pages will be realised in September. It is a long document, but I think it is better to give parents the answers to the questions you will be thinking about and probably a few you haven’t as well. I am mindful that for roughly half of the parents, what is being described will be, particularly in relation to pupil drop off and pick up, fairly familiar. For the other half including new parents of the Foundation Year 20/21 there is a whole new world to get used to. However, we will be out in force to support you through the one way routes, yellow brick roads and stars. All will be well. For the last time … have a lovely summer and relax.

The Grand Plan for September Dear Parents, Carers, Governors, Friends, Staff and PupilsWell, in a year of the bizarre, to say the least, here is the first ever August Newsletter.

Now we are a week and a half into the holiday, the last day for Y6 seems already like a distant memory, but again I must thank all the parents/carers of FY to Y5 for accommodating us to be able to close a day early to facilitate the most wonderful last day for Y6 and

their parents in two great events.

The next phase: Opening a Full School in September 2020Molescroft Primary School will open for pupils on Wednesday 9th September 2020. Every child in Year 1 to Year 6 is expected to attend. The Foundation Stage children will have a pre booked two hour induction session on the first three days, prior to starting on Monday 14th September 2020. (Parents of the FY have already been invited to select a session.)

Parents are already aware that staggered times are to be scheduled so that there are no more than 30 parents on a playground at a time. Stars will show parents where to stand and the “Yellow Brick Road” will continue to provide a safe path in and out of the site.

The choice of the “Yellow Brick Road” is deliberate, to make it seem a little less strange and a little more fun for the children, particularly the younger ones. When all this is over we shall have the Emerald City painted at the end of the road and a few bricks too! It remains however a very serious matter, that we must keep distant, we must keep all children with us and we MUST follow the “Yellow Brick Road” even if it seems a long way round. We must remember in September we shall have double the pupils attending than we had in July and getting everyone through the system in just 30 minutes, rather than 45 we had in July.

Half of the parental body are used to the systems of drop off and pick up and have adapted well to the new normal. Half of parents have little or no experience of the system. These parents will be supported by SMT through the maze, but parents are asked to prepare themselves as it is rigid and time consuming.

A message from the East Riding of Yorkshire CouncilThe entire population has a role in keeping the East Riding COVID-safe. To do so, the people of East Riding are being asked to follow some simple guidance: Prevent, Notice and Act.

1. Prevent by keeping your distance and washing your hands 2. Notice the symptoms of COVID-19 (high temperature, new continuous cough, loss/change to sense of smell/

taste) 3. Act by getting tested and staying home

If everyone follows these simple steps we can help to save lives and ensure the East Riding is a safe place to live, work, shop, learn, play, invest and visit. System of controls In welcoming all pupils back in the autumn term, all schools are required to adhere to a system of controls that focuses on a series of enhanced hygiene measures to minimise risks and create a safer environment for pupils and staff.

RETURN TO THE NEW NORMAL Q&A

What are the guiding principles? There are seven principles for the reopening of the full school in September.

1. Keeping everybody safe.2. TRACK and TRACE. This is to ensure that if there is a positive test result for Covid 19 in a pupil or member of staff,

the whole school does not have to close, but a clear understanding of the close contact between people enables an effective isolation ensuring there is no spread of the virus in school.

3. Maintaining children in Year Group Home Bubbles of 60 children.4. For children to have as near normal an experience of school as possible with a full restoration of high expectations,

pace and challenge.5. To offer a system which recognises the place the school plays in the daily lives of parents.6. Putting in all the necessary strategies to fill gaps in learning following the lockdown across the summer term.7. Managing an additional obstacle in that the school reception will not be open in September due to the ongoing

building of a new school foyer.

Timing will be everything!•Staff will be ultra organised and prepared. Timing will be everything; staff will be prompt particularly re pick up and drop off arrangements. Teachers will not be able to engage in conversation with parents/carers at these moments. A senior manager will indicate to a parent to move aside however if there is need to deal with an issue.

What will be the arrangements for dropping off and collecting children?•These remain the most vulnerable times of the day. There will still be staggered start and finish times for different groups of children. This is to ensure that parents/carers can maintain social distancing. There will be no more than 30 children being collected at a time on each large playground.•There will be senior staff positioned on the playgrounds and entrances to ensure parents are in the correct places.•The timings are much tighter than in the Summer Term and will deal with twice the number of children, it will be even more important than before that this is not seen as a time for socialising and parents/carers are asked to be prompt, not too early.•Timings for drop off are as follows:•08:25 Year 6•North (KS2) Playground through St. Leonards Road entrance: Mr. Rowsell’s Class•South (KS1) Playground through the cul-de-sac entrance: Mr. Britton’s Class

•08:30 Year 5•North (KS2) Playground through St. Leonards Road entrance: Mr. Morton’s Class•South (KS1) Playground through the cul-de-sac entrance: Mrs. Cameron’s/Mrs. Martin’s Class

•08:35 Year 4•North (KS2) Playground through St. Leonards Road entrance: Mrs. Henderson-Tucker & Mrs. Ripley’s Class•South (KS1) Playground through the cul-de-sac entrance: Mrs. Grainger & Mrs. Crofts’ Class

•08:50 Year 2•North (KS2) Playground through St. Leonards Road entrance: Mr. Williams’ Class•South (KS1) Playground through the cul-de-sac entrance: Miss Spencer’s Class

•09:00 Year 1•North (KS2) Playground through St. Leonards Road entrance: Mrs. McClarron’s Class•South (KS1) Playground through the cul-de-sac entrance: Mr. Trowsdale’s Class

Meanwhile the Foundation Stage will have a rotational drop off in a circular route maintaining social distancing, queuing up the path from the cul-de-sac

Meanwhile the Foundation Stage will have a rotational pick up in a circular route maintaining social distancing, queuing up the path from the cul-de-sac. At the pick up time, parents will be asked to stand on a star in the Foundation Courtyard and children will be handed over one group at a time as shown below.

•15:15 Gruffalos•15:20: Superworms•15:25: Zogs•15:30: Tiddlers

•If a parent is late for pick up, children will be taken back to their Home Bubble and the parent/carer will be asked to enter the site through the St. Leonards Road entrance travelling round the one way system to the child’s classroom door, where there can be a hand over. If a teacher is not present, the child will be placed in the relevant tea club bubble for collection.•If a parent is late for drop off, similarly the parent must follow the same procedure while the site remains open.•Until the new foyer is complete (estimated to be 18th September 2020), children arriving at times following the sealing of the site will need to wait at the gate to the South (KS1) playground and telephone the school to gain access.•Similarly if a parent is collecting a child during school hours when the site is sealed, the parent is also to telephone the school to receive a child.

•The Crossing Patrol will be operational throughout the drop off and pick up periods so it is vital that those picking up by car observe of the parking restrictions and keep distant from the Crossing Patrol wardens. Traffic wardens will be issuing parking tickets from the first day of the school year onwards.•PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN THE CUL-DE-SAC OR ON MOLESCROFT AVENUE OR ANYWHERE NEAR THE CROSSING PATROL.

•Clear directions will remain with the one-way system and the yellow “brick road” path, to guide the movement of parents around the site, which will be mandatory. Please refer to the map at the end of this letter. There are lines and stars painted at key movement points to ensure that parents can keep safely distant from each other. A film will be posted on the website to demonstrate the system. For those who had children attending school in the Summer Term, there is little change except that the front reception is closed. For those for whom this is a new experience, it can be a little bewildering at first so please do watch the film in advance. •Parents stand on stars painted on the playground keeping parents socially distant and there will be a formal visual hand over, during which parents will stand still and wait for all 30 children to be matched to their parent/carer at pick up times or to their teacher at drop off times. This will take longer than normal. A member of staff will then indicate that parents and children can join the one-way system to leave the site. At certain “pinch points” parents are asked to take it in turns to join the “yellow brick road," in the style of traffic merging at roadworks on a motorway.•Parents will not be able to engage in conversation with staff. If a parent has an urgent message it should be sent to the teacher before 8am as teachers will check their emails at 8am. To be doubly certain, the email could be copied to the [email protected] address. If however the message is important regarding the safety of a child, a phone call to the school office is essential. •Only one parent/carer can enter the site per child. Secondary aged pupils cannot enter with a parent, though if old enough, may be the sole carer at pick up. Parents with toddlers must keep their toddlers by their side at all times. I cannot stress this enough.•Goal shoot posts are positioned for a safe base for child minders with larger groups of children.

What are the arrangements for the Breakfast and Afternoon Tea Clubs?•I appreciate that having staggered times is not conducive for parents with siblings however to support parents the Breakfast and Afternoon Tea Clubs will be fully accessible. I have reviewed how we may be able to facilitate this. The Breakfast Club will remain in the hall and as now the children will be in seated home bubbles, one per year group. The children will not be able to move around and food will be served directly to the children. The Breakfast Club will therefore run from 8am to 9am to accommodate all parental needs. There is however a capacity which is 56. Everyone who has already requested places has been granted a place. There remains some additional capacity.•Drop off for the Breakfast Club will return to being at the Fire Door to the Hall. Access from the path from St. Leonards Road. The door will be open as we will be maintaining good ventilation in the hall, so there will be no need to press a bell. Parents dropping off must maintain social distance using the white lines and then follow the one way system around the site. However these parents may follow a slightly quicker route using the promenade past the Y1 and Y6 classrooms. This avoids having to go up and down steps to access the North (KS2) playground.•In addition to help parents and acknowledge the need to follow the one way system, drop off will be accepted from 07:55 for as long as the staggered start times remain. •Although the school is closed for the summer, Mrs. Wilson has kindly agreed to take bookings across the holiday. Please email [email protected]•Staff at the Breakfast Club will wear visors and maintain social distancing as they are from different bubbles.

•The Afternoon Tea Club will be organised very differently, but designed to ensure that we can meet parents’ needs. The club will run from 3pm to 5:15pm. Pick up will be very different as there are going to be seven separate clubs, one per year group. In order to pick up children, parents will need to enter the site through the St. Leonards Road entrance following the one way system, ensuring social distancing is maintained.•Children will be handed over directly from the year group classroom, where each bubble will be housed.•The rooms will be as follows; (note if parents have children in multiple bubbles this is also the order in which to collect in order to ensure only one circuit of the site is required):•Year 1: Mrs. McClarron’s Room•Year 6: Mr. Britton’s Room•Year 5: Mrs. Cameron’s Room•Year 4: Mrs. Henderson-Tucker’s Room•Year 3: Mrs. Charlton’s Room•Year 2: Mr. Williams’ Room•Foundation Year: Via the Foundation Year Courtyard maintaining their one way

system.•There is a significant increase in capacity. Everyone who has already requested places has been granted a place. A confirmatory email has been sent. There remains a lot of space for additional bookings.•If demand is much less than expected, two bubbles may operate in opposite ends of the same room.•Food and drinks will be delivered in cool bags to the classrooms before 3pm. •Although the school is closed for the summer, Mrs. Wilson has kindly agreed to take bookings across the holiday. Please email [email protected]

How will the children be organised during the day?•Children will be back in their normal class groups and will be able to also work together as a year group. The year group is seen as the bubble. This means that they will also be able to play together and attend clubs together within a year group organisation. •Each Home Bubble i.e. Year Group will be not mix with another Home Bubble/year group.•The children of each class will enter their classroom via the room’s external door. Cloakrooms will reopen for the children BUT they will not be otherwise allowed in corridors unsupervised except to go to their designated toilets. •We will all have to take the opening of school just as seriously as we did in April and then again every week in June. We cannot be relaxed about it.

How will bubbles be maintained through the use of toilets?•Children have demonstrated how sensible they can be with the use of toilets understanding that only one person is allowed in a toilet at any time, using a cone system (moved by a foot) to indicate that a toilet is occupied. •Through Lockdown, FY, Y1, and Y6 have had access to their own toilets, but not other year groups. In order to enable this, Y2, Y4 will have access to designated toilets which will be declared unisex. As only one child can enter at a time, this should not be an issue. Y3 and Y5 will have their own toilets. •The general exclusion of corridors except for visiting toilets should ensure the minimum contact across bubbles. Strict hand-washing procedures will be promoted at toilet times and on arrival at school and before each session. Hand gel is available in every classroom and now also outside every toilet, pupils’ and staff.•Mr. Platten will sanitise spray the Parish Centre toilets after the morning crossing patrol so that these can be available to staff during the rest of the day.

What will it be like in the classroom?•Social Distancing is not expected or possible within a classroom between 30 children. The class teacher and class teaching assistants cannot similarly distance themselves from the children, but adults are expected to maintain 1m between each other in well ventilated rooms.•Visiting teachers/adults however will be expected to maintain a social distance between the teacher and the class. Classrooms are to be set up so that a teacher delivering to a class who is not a member of the bubble can operate from the front of the classroom 2m away from children and other adults. An area will be marked on the carpet with black and yellow tape. This will also be set up in the Parish Room for peripatetic teachers.•Classrooms of older children will be arranged so that where appropriate the desks are facing the front. This however is not going to be always appropriate and as the children will mix within their bubble and break times anyway.•It is important that as many of the normal routines as possible are restored. The start of the day after the hand over of pupils will be restored with the usual warm up activities and straight into work. From day one we will restore the pace and high expectations. Over the lockdown period, organisation was necessarily more relaxed. We are now not only starting a new school year, but facing the need to fill gaps in learning and understanding, we will “hit the ground running” and set all the usual benchmarks in relation to behaviour, and learning and work ethic.

What about contamination and classroom equipment?•Older children (Y2 and above) will be provided with their own pencil case and pencil, crayons, rubber ruler , etc. Canister pencil sharpeners will prevent children having to wander unnecessarily to the bins. The Foundation Year children will have the most space and will be learning outside as much as possible. Y1 will be encouraged to spread outside as much as possible. Social distancing in the context of the new normal in school is between the different Home Bubbles, it is not possible and not desirable socially and mentally for the children between the members of each Home Bubble.•Lessons will return to normal and lessons such as Design and Technology and Sport will resume. Each classroom is well stocked with cleaning equipment, disinfectant sprays for equipment, hand gels and wipes for surfaces like iPads and handles. Mr. Platten and his team will ensure that there is always the necessary equipment in place in every room, outside toilets and in corridors etc.•All staff will share responsibility for the sanitising of equipment and constant strict hygiene practices. This will be particularly important in FY and Y1. Children have also clearly demonstrated their understanding for maintaining perfect hygiene protocols including the regular hand-washing and use of hand gel where necessary.•Classroom based resources, such as books and games, can be used and shared within the bubble; these will be cleaned regularly, along with all frequently touched surfaces.•Resources that are shared between bubbles, such as sports, art and science equipment will be cleaned frequently and meticulously and always between bubbles, or rotated to allow them to be left unused and out of reach for a period of 48 hours (72 hours for plastics).

How do we organise One to One support and interventions with children’s groups?•Staff providing lessons through our interventions programme will clearly be working across different bubbles. The Library will be set up for 3 stations for intervention work. The old ICT Suite and Tony Knight Centre will similarly have the capacity for one group at a time. The leader will sanitise after each group.• Providing the members of the group are all from the same year group, social distancing doesn’t have to be maintained. Those leading the interventions will need to maintain a social distance of 2m or 1m plus vizor if they are working with groups from different year groups. •Booster and Early Bird groups will recommence, always with a staff member from the relevant bubble. They do not necessarily have to be in the classroom and the children can come in to school via the Breakfast Club early just as before.•Y1 will maintain access to the first intervention space in the library.•The programme of individual support at Breakfast Club and Afternoon Tea Club will only be possible with individual risk assessments, but it is not impossible.

How will children catch up?•As indicated above there will be a plethora of catch up and intervention programmes put into action. Three members of staff have been identified for this purpose. •Teachers will however, as always, assess at the start of units of work and throughout their lessons and marking the understanding of pupils. They will adapt their teaching accordingly. It will remain the teacher’s responsibility to understand the security of learning and the teacher who will teach in the classroom these children.•The curriculum is a spiral and therefore by following the English and Maths programmes, any gaps in learning and understanding will be spotted and acted upon.

How is the Library to be used?•Library Time will not be reinstated immediately, but it is hoped that a system will be set up soon to enable the safe loan of books and the chance to use the facility.

What will happen if someone is tested positive for, or has symptoms of Covid 19?•Any pupil or member of staff testing positive for Covid 19 will lead to the immediate closure of the Home Bubble for 14 days. Anyone showing symptoms will be sent home and be required to have a test. Test kits are to be provided to schools for those who cannot get to a test site. Tests are now available for anyone displaying symptoms. We understand that a test can now be arranged quickly with a speedy test result. Parents need to have a contingency plan if we need to close down a Home Bubble at short notice and to know how they will manage child care for up to 14 days. Should a year group be closed down, the school will immediately switch to providing home learning for that year group. This however presumes there is a teacher from the year group unaffected by the virus.

What will playtime be like?•Each Home Bubble i.e. Year Group will have dedicated playtimes and their own space to play in at any one time. This will include zoned areas of the field. The children will be able to now play together normally within their bubble. There will be a restoration of playtime in the afternoon*, until we are fully able to return to our normal working hours including assemblies. (*Y3/Y4 have two morning breaks).•A creative border of clouds will be painted on the KS1 playground to identify east and west areas.•A creative border of clouds will be painted on the KS2 playground to identify the Y1 area.•The Adventure Playground will reopen.•We expect the resumption of free fruit but we shall not be selling milk shakes or fruit at breaks. If children would like to bring a piece of fruit to eat at a break time this is entirely appropriate. It should be kept in the book bag not with a packed lunch.•Staff within each year group will cover the playground times.

Are water bottles available?•Water bottles should still be brought to school, but please ensure names are clear on the lid. We can do this for parents/carers if necessary. Every child is entitled to one new bottle, free per year. Parents and children will be pleased to know that our new stock of bottles are eco friendly, because not only are they not single use plastic, that are now compostable.

What is the expectation of the children in relation to their behaviour?•Children will be expected to be exemplary in their behaviour as they are normally. There are no need for new rules, because our three key rules cover all of the needs of our school community. Children who therefore break a rule will be covered by our usual systems. However, I will contact parents if a pupil is found to be deliberately and wantonly putting the health of the Home Bubble at risk. If this is not resolved, the child will not be allowed into school until guarantees can be secured of future good behaviour. I cannot imagine any of our pupils doing something as reckless as this.

How is the school to be cleaned?•The school will be thoroughly cleaned every day. In addition we are lucky that we have a long established system of cleaning during the day by housekeepers. The cleaning schedule will be adjusted to account for the fact that the Afternoon Tea Club will be using classrooms after school; one Y2 and one Y3 room will now be cleaned in the morning, but the Library can now be cleaned on an evening. •During the morning and again during the afternoon, surfaces like railings, switches, door handles will be sanitised. All corridor doors have automatic door stoppers attached. It is therefore be possible to walk around the school without having to open a door (toilets excepted). These door stoppers should be left in the open position even at the end of the day to protect everyone. Should the fire alarm be activated the doors close automatically. Classroom doors and windows will also be open to ensure good ventilation. •New special pedal bins for tissues are to be placed in every room.•Hand gels will be placed on stools outside all toilets.•As previously indicated, all staff must see their role as including sanitisation whenever possible. All necessary equipment will always be placed in every room.

PPE and further protection of staff and children•If parents so wish, pupils may wear a mask and staff may choose to wear a mask though this is not being insisted upon. The school has a stock of masks for staff use and pupils in case of emergency.•Certain roles do require the wearing of a visor. These include the lunchtime trolley operators, D&T Food Technology lead, Staff tea trolley. •Note if a visiting adult/teacher to a classroom cannot maintain a distance of 2m, he or she is required to wear a mask.

How will lunchtime and refreshments be managed and the impact on PPA time?•Parents can pay for school meals as they have in the past. Children select their meal choice at registration as normal. We ask that all payments are made on line. There will be a choice of the hot meal of the day followed always by a cold pudding and the option of a yoghurt or fruit. A pre-plated salad option with wrap also is available daily, each day with diverse options which can be added to the salad from serving trays by the lunchtime supervisor in each room. The plated salads will be wrapped in cling film and the pots with the protein (ham, cheese, tuna, turkey, etc.) will be delivered in cool bags. Until the return to the dining room the Jacket Potato option is not available. It is vital however that we offer a popular option with variety. We need to restore income levels to protect jobs and the school budget.•Meals will continue to be served “on wheels”. We are doubling our service trollies to four which will tour the building delivering the meals to each Home Bubble/Year Group. Meals will be placed one at a time with cutlery on a table in the corridor outside each Home Bubble, so that the Kitchen Staff do not enter the rooms. Children may choose to bring a packed lunch. Children in the FY and KS1 are still entitled to a free school meal. The same applies to those in other year groups who qualify. •Each Class will have their own dedicated lunchtime supervisor who will disinfect the tables at the start and end of the lunch-break. The same supervisor will take the children from their classroom to join their friends in the rest of the year group outside to play as described above. •At the end of each lunchbreak, the supervisor will bring their own class in (no need to queue), to be in place ready for a prompt start to lessons.•The Schedule: note that food is always served at the start of the lunch-break.•11:30 - 12:45 Lunch Break Y6 Trolley A: Clubs available from 12 noon •11:30 - 12:45 Lunch Break Y5 Trolley B: Clubs available from 12 noon•11:30 - 12:45 Lunch Break Y2 Trolley C: Clubs available from 12 noon•11:30 - 12:45 Lunch Break Y1 Trolley D: Children will eat in four different sittings in their classrooms•12:00 - 13:15 Lunch Break FY Trolley B: Children will eat in four different sittings in their classrooms•12:15 - 13:30 Lunch Break Y4 Trolley A: Clubs available from 12:45•12:15 - 13:30 Lunch Break Y3 Trolley D: Clubs available from 12:45

What if my child is ill?•First Aid cover is maintained and we are able to support children who are feeling poorly or have had an accident in the normal way. Should a child be ‘sick’ or have an “incident” PPE will be worn, not that sickness or diahorrea are symptoms of Covid 19, but as a precaution, as the virus could display no symptoms and yet bodily fluids could cause a spread of the contamination.

•If a child is sick on furniture or floor, our usual granuals will be used followed by cleaning and disinfection.

Who will teach my child?•Children will be taught by their class teachers as described in the letter of June 2020. PPA activities will resume, though teachers will move from room to room rather than the pupils except for PE and D&T Food Technology.

Do I have to send my child to school and what are the arrangements for reporting absence?•Yes, the full legal expectations for attending school are restored. I understand that for some parents and maybe children, who have not been in school for some time, there will be some nervousness. The reason for arranging the Tipi Visits for Y2 toY5 was to help overcome this. This was extremely effective and the children bounced back to their parents having overcome any fear of being back in school. If a parent has a concern about returning please contact Mrs. Tonks for KS2 children [email protected] or Mrs. Hakner [email protected] for KS1 children. We will do all we can to support you and your child. We will be happy to offer a staggered experience if that is felt to be appropriate to build up confidence. In the vast majority of cases however just coming in and getting back to work is by far the best policy. Providing parents are working positively with us, there would be no need to declare any absence as unauthorised. However a flat refusal to engage in a reintegration programme would become recorded as unauthorised and the Local Authority would then intervene.

How will work for children at home be provided?•The home learning programme is now at an end. Homework will be set as it always used to be on a Friday by email with reference to a Homework pack which will be sent home in hard copy format as well as by email.•The packs will also be available on the website.•The only occasion when home learning would be reinstated would be should a year group be sent home due to a positive test result.

How will the curriculum look?•It’s back to the full curriculum.•Music will be fully restored and any lessons using percussion or keyboards will be sanitised first.•PE will recommence with a full programme. Children must have their black PE kit at school every day, taking it home on a Friday night and returned on a Monday Morning. Outdoor PE (Y1 - Y6) will also occur throughout the winter, so children will need to have a kit to keep them warm. Remember for PE there must be a change of footwear from whatever is provided for normal school wear. (Y1 - Y6) As we cannot loan PE equipment, after one occasion of having no PE kit, a kit will be provided by the school, the child’s name written into the kit and the parents charged for the kit.•The collection of PE bags from pegs will be managed by the staff. •PPA sessions will delivered where appropriate to children in their rooms and the teachers will move to the children. In Y5/Y6 PPA sessions all children will need to change so the whole year group goes to male and female changing rooms at the start of the afternoon and again at the end of the afternoon•Book Bags containing Reading Books remain essential as always. Books handed in or borrowed by a child will be removed from circulation for 72 hours. •We are, planning on the basis that statutory primary assessments will take place in summer 2021. The early years foundation stage profile, and all existing statutory key stage 1 and 2 assessments, should return in 2020 to 2021 in accordance with their usual timetables. This includes:• the phonics screening check• key stage 1 tests and teacher assessment• the Year 4 multiplication tables check• key stage 2 tests and teacher assessment• statutory trialling

Will music lessons resume?•Peripatetic lessons will be given to children from the same year group at a time. These will be in the Parish Centre as normal. The teachers will be asked to sanitise between each group of different aged children.•The teachers will maintain a 2m distance or wear a mask.•Friday Music lessons will be an organised and managed in the hall as normal but children are to walk to the hall, managed by staff. The same is for PE – Fitness etc.•All instruments are to be sprayed with disinfectant after use.•Mrs. Walker’s timetable to be adjusted to accommodate new start and finish times.

Will the orchestra reform?•The orchestra will rehearse every Friday, but they will be arranged into year groups across the entire well ventilated hall. They may be filmed to feature in the following week’s assembly.•There will be a gradual expansion of the orchestra week on week starting with Y6.

Will there be recorder lessons?•Yes, but children must have their own recorder with them (Y3 to Y6); absolutely no borrowing of recorders.•Desks will be sanitised after each lesson.•If children forget their recorder a substitute is to be used, so that the children are still “reading Music”. This could be a keyboard or glockenspiel or even a ruler.

Will French and Spanish continue to be taught?•Yes, but if the lesson is being delivered by Mrs. Henderson-Tucker (once a fortnight) she will maintain a 2m distance from all the children in the class or if within 1m wear a visor.

Will D&T Cookery recommence?•Food Technology lessons will be restored though Mrs. Lakin will wear a vizor as she will be working with children from different year groups.•Mrs. Lakin will collect and deliver children back to the classrooms.

What if my child’s teacher is absent for a non-covid reason?•Cover will be provided just as it is now. Often this is using a member of staff from within the team. This remains the most effective way to ensure effective continuity of learning. •On the rare occasions a supply teacher is brought in that teacher will maintain a 2m distance from the class.

How is the Register to be taken?•One member of the team is to take the register as the children enter the room. Registers will be collected from the Refreshments table by a member of the Admin Team.

Will there be assemblies?•There will be an assembly each fortnight for each year group except FY for now.•Monday 14:40 Y1 or Y2 within the PPA schedule by Mrs. Hakner •Tuesday 2:45pm Y3 or Y4 with Mrs. Tonks. •Thursday Y5 or Y6 within the PPA schedule by Mr. Loncaster •There will be a Friday whole school assembly led by Mr. Loncaster and prior filmed by Mr. Britton. This will be watched by the whole school on a Friday afternoon.

Will other staff teach my child for example in PPA sessions?•Yes, but the teacher will maintain a 2m distance from all the children in the class.•Gymnastics will be continuing, mats and equipment will be sprayed after the full session. Each afternoon only children from the same year group/home bubble will be using the equipment.•KS1 are to have mega sessions to avoid unnecessary movement and changing.

What are the implications for the Teaching School?•The work of the TSA will fully resume.•Student teachers will join bubbles and operate as normal. They will be able to observe other teachers teaching, but must remain 2m apart unless it is in their own bubble.•Courses may restart, but only if those attending can maintain a 2m distance from each other. Participants may observe teaching, but again must be within a 2m isolation zone. This will mean that participation on courses will be much smaller, unless a twilight course is running on an evening, where the maximum attendance would probably be 15.•SLEs can continue to visit and work in other schools, but must always maintain a 2m distance from other adults and children.

Will there be a consultation evening in October?•It would seem unlikely that we will be able to invite parents into school for face to face meetings, so the plan will be that the staff will meet parents for a timed consultation via Zoom.

Mobile Phones•The policy on Mobile Phones returns to the normal, however the children who have been given permission to have a phone at school, must keep it in their book bag from the moment they cross the school threshold to the moment they leave the school threshold. Failure to do so will lead to the confiscation of the phone to be collected by a parent. If a child is shown to be using a mobile phone to bully (in or out of school) or be unkind the right to have a phone on site will be immediately withdrawn until such time that all are confident that there will not be a repetition.

School Uniform•School Uniform remains mandatory. The exact colour scheme is mandatory. The jumper or cardigan must have the school logo. Other items do not need to have the school badge. If due to financial difficulties a parent is struggling to fund the purchase of a school jumper, please contact Mr. Loncaster by email in confidence.

How does a parent access the school office?• The Admin team will be able to take phone calls and answer enquiries by email. We ask that as now, parents do not attend the office in person, unless a personal conversation is essential. In such a circumstance, the parent will be invited to sit on the pink chair in the Parish Centre. A member of the admin team or senior manager will then facilitate the meeting. Please consider that as only one parent can be seen at a time there may be a queue and a long wait at the front door. •If parents need a non-urgent meeting, with any named member of staff this can be facilitated and should be requested by email. It is also possible to make an appointment to arrange for the purchase of things like uniform.

What do I do if I have an important message for my child’s teacher?•Parents will not be able to engage in conversation with staff. If a parent has an urgent message it should be sent to the teacher before 8am as teachers will check their emails at 8am. To be doubly certain, the email could be copied to the [email protected] address. If however the message is important regarding the safety of a child, a phone call to the school office is essential.

Will Y6 have responsibilities across the school as normal?•No, this will have to wait until a complete return to normality.•Children must not be wandering in corridors or taking messages, etc. The only reason for a pupil being in a corridor is to visit the toilet, collect a coat, attending first aid or attending the school reception, because a member if the admin staff has collected them. Wherever possible staff will use walkie talkies or phones to contact first aid or the school reception.•Some pupils will walk down a corridor at pick up or drop off time, if the outdoor route would go against the one way system. Specifically these are at pick up time: Mr. Britton’s Class, Mrs. Cameron’s Class, Mrs. Grainger & Mrs. Crofts’ Class, Miss Wright’s Class & Mr. Trowsdale’s Class. Specifically these are at drop off time: Mr. Morton’s Class, Mrs. Charlton’s Class, & Mr. Trowsdale’s Class.

BAME Risk Assessments•A personal risk assessment is to be completed with each relevant member of staff to review how the member of staff is to be best protected. Attendance at work is however expected.•A letter with considerations is to be sent to parents/carers of children in these groups. Parents will have the opportunity to discuss any issues with a member of staff.

Recording Guests for Track and Trace•With the return to school in September, there may be a need to share information with NHS Track and Trace for COVID-19.•Whilst this is a voluntary scheme, I inform parents and staff that names and contact details will be shared with the NHS Track and Trace scheme, should a positive test result be reported.  •All visitors to school will need to give their name and telephone number to the reception and be informed that the information may be shared with the NHS for the purposes of Track and Trace.

How are pupils to access water?•In an ideal world, water bottles are on the desk which reduces walking around, but keep the central storage available for when they need to be out of the way. Younger classes tend to need to keep them organised in crates. Remember we know the children are mixing in a classroom, but the more we can minimise this the better.•Parents are reminded about the need for the water bottle to be in school. We are not providing cups.

How will the hall be used? •A new hall timetable will be set up, but it will be similar to the old one.•The hall will be available for clubs at lunchtime and after school.

Will Clubs resume?•Yes, some clubs will resume, but there will be a restructuring to ensure that only one year group can attend at a time unless there can be separate zones. Some clubs will not commence until restrictions are lifted.•As the hall is not to be used as a dining hall for the time being, it enables the school to run clubs in the hall at lunchtime in addition to our outdoor provision, particularly using the MUGA.•Handball is to be promoted by Tigers Trust across year groups from Y1 to Y6. We hope to set up special tournaments across the year.•A new Table Tennis League is to be set up for Y6, which these children can play on any lunchtime when the field is not open.

Will volunteers be welcome back in school?•A risk assessment will be completed for each individual situation. It will depend on what the volunteer is expected to do and how and where it will be completed. Most volunteers work solely with one bubble, so this should be manageable. Some roles however such as with the school bank and orchestra will need to follow the regulations for visiting teachers and will be organised so that social distancing can be assured.

How do I pay for meals, uniform, clubs, child care and other school items?•Since the lockdown, all payments have been made on line with a debit or credit card. This has worked very effectively and we would prefer that this continues. It also is very easy for us to repay parents in circumstances whereby a refund is required.•Will there be educational visits?•‘In the autumn term, schools can resume non-overnight domestic educational visits.’•This should be done in line with protective measures, such as keeping children within their consistent group, and the coronavirus (COVID-19) secure measures in place at the destination. Schools should also make use of outdoor spaces in the local area to support delivery of the curriculum.’

When will the Parish Centre Open?•Leaders of groups will be invited to visit, hopefully in the week commencing 21st September 2020 to go through arrangements, risk assessments , etc.•Hopefully the centre can reopen on Monday 25th September 2020

… and together we look forward to a new normal.

R PARKING GOOD BEHAVIOUR Restrictions apply, virus or no virus, sun or rain.

Earlier this year I thanked parents for not parking in the cul-de-sac which dangerously mixes vehicles with hundreds of children entering or leaving the school. I also thanked drivers for not parking on the yellow lines on Molescroft Avenue. This keeps the view clear of the crossing patrol.

Further thanks were extended to those with disabled badges who also park as far away as they find possible from the crossing patrol.

However, it only needs one car to cause a disruption. As we begin to reintegrate children back into school, please can I ask all parents to remind others e.g. grandparents of the parking expectations.

Please remember that all these measures are designed to protect your children. A zero tolerance to infringement ensures that we keep the area safe. Turning a blind eye only ends up with the situations we see often on the news at other schools across the country.

In the current circumstances I would prefer not to have to personally discuss issues with drivers.

As a relief Crossing Patrol Officer myself, I understand first hand how difficult it can become when cars are parked near the crossing patrol. The result is a reduction of visibility and often backing up of vehicles unable to move forward. On the vast majority of occasions however the road has been completely clear, even on a wet day.

We have welcomed back Mr. Platten to his role, but I am sure everyone will understand that those crossing must keep moving swiftly passed him and at a suitable distance. It is possible to cross and keep 2m from him. I also remind everyone not to cross behind him. It is actually quite a complex crossing and is hindered by those crossing behind the crossing patrol officer.

The parking situation in early 2020 was the best it had ever been, and was much appreciated.

As we continue to reintegrate more children back into school it is essential that all those picking up and dropping off with a car return to their good habits and park away from Molescroft Avenue and to avoid the cul-de-sac and other areas marked with restrictions.

The secret to keeping us all safe, is in our

hands.

A REMINDER TO US ALL TO MANAGE OUR OWN RISK We all depend on each other to do the right thing. As I indicated in previous letters, I would like parents/carers to know that the overriding priority is the care of all our school community. We also recognise that schools are a fundamental cog in the ability of society to get back to normal. It is therefore my duty to do all I can to support that. I will not however hesitate to cancel, delay, postpone or reverse provision if I believe the risks cannot be managed. I also reiterate the following. We must recognise that we are all in a process of returning to a new normal. We are managing the running of the school in light of a very different world to the one we left in March.  Initially, this is a reflection of the apparent reduction in the risks, but secondly a reflection that all of us for the time being, need to manage our lives, families and work within the context of the virus.  Everyone, every day will have to risk assess his or her own practices in our own lives to protect ourselves and our loved ones.  This is the new reality and will remain so until a vaccine is found.   The greatest strength we all have is to manage our own risk and that of our families and children.  We manage that by the way in which we reduce every risk whenever we go for a walk, a cycle ride or visit a supermarket.  We manage that by our own hygiene practices at home, in the street, in the shop, in school.  We manage it by the way we will strictly follow our plans in school.
