Es, dijo el Diario Público, “ un torrente de emociones”, “una

tormenta perfecta de éxtasis”, declaró el Diario de Jerez, mientras que el crítico de El País admitió: “Ninguna actuación me ha conmovido tanto en años”. El espectáculo comenzó a aplausos en Marzo en el Festival Flamenco de Jerez y luego pasó a un paquete de la casa completo en el prestigioso Teatro Español de Madrid. Cada actuación puso al público en pie, gritando oles y bravos, muchos de ellos con los ojos llenos de lágrimas de la emoción por la bailarina que se había despertado en ellos. Lluvia, está ahora en una gira mundial que ha llevado a Yerbabuena este año de España a Buenos Aires, a Francia, a Grecia, a la Ópera de Sydney, a Tokio para el Sadler’s Wells de Londres en Otoño. Parece que con este espectáculo inusual, la premiada bailaora apoyada por Granada ha sintonizado con el espíritu mundial de la época. En un mundo que se ha convertido en un adicto a la emoción instantánea con Internet, el teléfono móvil y la televisión de 24-horas, lo real de su marcado estilo flamenco ha dado un acorde internacional. Junto con Joaquín Cortés y Sara Baras, Yerbabuena es una de un pequeño grupo de bailarines que acercan el flamenco a un público mundial. Pero, ¿qué tiene esta forma de danza ancestral que tiene un atractivo tan universal? “Es algo mágico”, dice Eva. “Donde quiera que vamos tenemos una respuesta maravillosa, incluso donde menos lo esperaríamos. Actué en Nueva Zelanda y estuve desconcertada con teatros repletos cada noche. Luego fuimos a Japón, donde se descubrió una enorme tendencia por las escuelas de flamenco y donde la gente enloquecía con sus aplausos”. Desde la fundación de su propia compañía, Ballet Flamenco de Eva Yerbabuena, en 1998, Yerbabuena ha viajado a un público más y más global. El público por todas partes parece fascinado por la pureza y la sobriedad de su estilo flamenco, su explosivo juego de piernas y los movimientos hipnóticos de sus brazos y manos. Y, sobre todo, que responden a su duende - que es únicamente del sentimiento andaluz -que es la marca registrada del flamenco. ecstasy” declared the Diario de Jérez while the reviewer for El País admitted: “No performance has moved me as much in years”.The show opened to plaudits in March at the Jérez Flamenco Festival and then went on to pack a full house at Madrid’s prestigious Teatro Español. Every performance saw the audience on their feet, yelling Olés and Bravos, many with their eyes full of tears from the emotions the dancer had awakened in them. Lluvia is now on a world tour that has taken Yerbabuena this year from Spain to Buenos Aires to France to Greece to the Sydney Opera House to Tokyo to London’s Sadler’s Wells in the autumn. It seems that with this unusual show, the Granada-born award-winning bailaora has tuned in to a global zeitgeist. In a world that has become addicted to instant emotion with the Internet, the mobile phone and 24-hour television, the realness of her stark style of flamenco has hit an international chord.Along with Joaquin Cortés and Sara Baras, Yerbabuena is one of a small group of dancers bringing flamenco to a world audience. But what is it about this ancestral dance form that has such universal appeal? “It is something magic,” says Eva. “Everywhere we go we are getting a wonderful response, even where we would least expect. I performed in New Zealand and was bowled over with theatres chock-full every night. Then we went to Japan where we discovered a huge trend for flamenco schools and where the people went crazy with their applause.” Since founding her own company, Ballet Flamenco Eva Yerbabuena, in 1998, Yerbabuena has toured to a wider and wider global audience. Audiences everywhere seem enthralled by the purity and starkness of her flamenco style, her explosive footwork and the hypnotic movements of her arms and hands. And above all, they respond to her duende – that uniquely Andalusian ‘soulfulness’ that is the trademark of flamenco. And there is plenty of that in Lluvia and much of it is owed to a visit the dancer made to ONCE, the Spanish National Organisation for the Blind. “Lately I’ve been seeing a lack of sensitivity in the world,” she explains. “We think that we have all our senses active but often we don’t in this crazy fast-moving world of computers and mobile phones where we invariably live in an imaginary world rather than using our emotions for real.” u u

Ella fue a la ONCE, dice, para ahondar en el uso de los sentidos y se vió inspirada por la espontaneidad natural de los ciegos. “Descubrí que alguien nacido ciego se ríe, naturalmente, pero no se sonríe”, dice ella. “Una sonrisa es algo aprendido por la vista - no es natural, como una risa.” La respuesta de la persona ciega a la vida, se dio cuenta, de que era mucho más “real”. “Ellos hacen las cosas porque las sienten y eso es algo que estamos perdiendo. Fue una experiencia muy fuerte para mí, aunque me dejó con más preguntas que respuestas”. Ella trata de responder a esto en Lluvia, que se centra explícitamente en cómo utilizamos(o fallamos al usar) nuestros sentidos. Lo llamó “Lluvia, dice ella, porque la lluvia” puede ser cualquier cosa - puede significar las lágrimas, un nacimiento, la esperanza o la tristeza”. Todo esto alimentado en la composición creativa del espectáculo con números títulos tan poéticos como El sinfín de la vida, Soledades, Palabras Rotas y Lluvia de sal. Hay tarantas, levanticas, murcianas, soleás, bulerías, tanguillos de Cádiz y un hermoso trémolo compuesto por su marido Paco Jarana - uno de los guitarristas flamencos más talentosos y respetados de España - que sirve como guía musical que marca el inicio, el centro y el final de su actuación. Es, dice, uno de las “más completas” producciones que ha hecho. Yerbabuena comenzó a bailar a los 11 años, después de que una tía, viera su rea cción a la música flamenca. Su formación casi llegó a su fin sin embargo, cuando tenía 12 años y su padre perdió su empleo como trabajador de la construcción. En su desesperación, se decidió a escribir al Rey Juan Carlos, pidiendo una beca: “Escribí una carta en una hoja de mi cuaderno y dirigida ‘al Rey de España, Palacio Real, Madrid”, Dice. “Me encontré recientemente con el Rey y la Reina Sofía después de una actuación y nos reímos de él”. Una semana después de enviar su carta, dos Guardias Civiles se presentaron en su casa, pero pronto descubrieron que, como su padre era dueño de su casa, Eva no cumplía los criterios para una beca educativa real. n

Afortunadamente, su propio maestro vió su decepción y contrató a la joven Eva para enseñar a bailarines más jóvenes como pago por sus lecciones. El resto es historia. Yerbabuena ha trabajado profesionalmente desde que tenía 15 años. Su consumida creencia en el poder del flamenco se ha enriquecido de la herencia histórica y artística del sur de España, donde estudió con muchos de los más grandes intérpretes del arte y la danza, con dos empresas importantes antes de establecer la suya. “El lenguaje del flamenco es una cuestión de interpretación de las raíces”, dice ella. “Es como con la fruta. Hay zonas en las que algunas frutas no pueden crecer. Incluso si se colocan en un invernadero, no tienen el mismo sabor. Incluso a través de Andalucía, cuando se trata del flamenco, por ejemplo entre Granada y Sevilla, hay diferencias. Es hasta la luz, la dieta, el medio ambiente, el acento”. Con los años, para ampliar sus horizontes, Yerbabuena estudió actuación, viajó a Cuba para aprender de los bailaores de flamenco olvidados, actuó con Mikhail Baryshnikov, Joaquín Cortés y la idiosincrasica coreógrafa alemana Pina Bausch, y asumió papeles en las películas de Mike Figgis Flamenco Women y Hotel.

Desde entonces, ha recibido todos los grandes premios de baile español y actuado en todo el mundo. No importa lo sofisticado de sus espectáculos, están bañados con la crudeza y la improvisación esencial para el flamenco - fusión de gitanos, árabes, judíos, y una influencia del español que comenzó a desarrollar el cante jondo “(canción profunda) en Andalucía hace más de 200 años. “Para mí, cada representación es una conversación con el público y un desafío a mí que me conozco a mí misma y mis límites”, dice ella. “Siempre soy una persona diferente cuando subo al escenario que cuando me bajo, porque cada interpretación me cambia.” No esperamos tanto. She went to ONCE, she says, to more deeply explore the use

of the senses and found herself inspired by the natural spontaneity of the blind. “I discovered that someone born blind laughs naturally but doesn’t smile,” she says. “A smile is something learned by sight – it’s not natural like a laugh is.” The blind person’s response to life, she noticed, was much more “real”. “They do things because they feel things and that’s something we are losing. It was a very strong experience for me even if it did leave me with questions rather than answers.”She tries to answer these in Lluvia which focuses explicitly on how we use (or fail to use) our senses. She called it Lluvia, she says, because rain “can be anything – it can mean tears, a birth, hope or sadness.” All of this fed into the show’s creative composition with numbers with titles as poetic as El sinfín de la vida (The endlessness of life), Soledades (Loneliness), Palabras rotas (Broken words) and Lluvia de sal (Tear drops). There are tarantas, levanticas, murcianas, soleás, bulerías, tanguillos de Cádiz and a beautiful trémolo composed by her husband Paco Jarana – one of the most talented and respected flamenco guitarists in Spain – that serves as the musical guide that marks the start, core and ending of her performance. It is, she says, one of the “most complete” productions she has made.Yerbabuena began dancing aged 11 after an aunt spotted her reaction to flamenco music. Her training nearly came to an end however when she was 12 and her father lost his job as a construction worker. In desperation, she decided to write to King Juan Carlos asking for a grant: “I wrote a letter on exercise book paper and addressed it ‘To the King of Spain, The

Royal Palace, Madrid’!” she says. “I met the King and Queen Sofia recently after a performance and we laughed about it.” A week after sending her letter, two guardia civil appeared at her home but quickly discovered that as her father owned his house, Eva didn’t meet the criteria for a royal educational grant. Fortunately, her

own teacher saw her disappointment and engaged the young Eva to tutor younger dancers in payment for her lessons.The rest is history. Yerbabuena has worked professionally since she was 15. Her consuming belief in the power of flamenco has grown out of the rich historic and artistic heritage of southern Spain where she studied with many of the art form’s greatest performers, dancing with two prominent companies before establishing her own. “Interpreting flamenco language is a matter of roots,” she says. “It’s like with fruit. There are zones where some fruits just can’t grow. Even if you put them in a

greenhouse, they don’t taste the same. Even across Andalusia, when it comes to flamenco, say between Granada and Seville, there are differences. It’s down to the light, to the diet, to the environment, to the accent.” Over the years, to expand her horizons, Yerbabuena has studied acting, travelled

to Cuba to learn from forgotten flamenco dancers, performed with Mikhail Baryshnikov, Joaquin Cortés and idiosyncratic German choreographer Pina Bausch, and taken roles in Mike Figgis’s films Flamenco Women and Hotel. Since then, she has received every major Spanish dance award and performed worldwide. No matter how sophisticated her shows, they are suffused with the rawness and improvisation essential to flamenco – a fusion of Gypsy, Arab, Jewish, and Spanish influences that began developing the cante jondo (deep song) in Andalusia more than 200 years ago. “For me, every performance is a conversation with the audience and a challenge for me to know myself and my limits,” she says. “I’m always a different person when I go up on stage to when I come off because every performance changes me.”Not too much we hope. After years of it sitting in a cupboard, the Indian sari I bought in Karnataka has now found a home as a colourful canopy over my daughter’s bed and I have framed my collection of small wooden carvings, pinning them to a canvas in a curious pattern and then surrounding them with a bold frame to match their dark colourings. They no longer sit forlornly in a row waiting for something interesting to happen – being dusted, for example.Objects need not be utilised for their original purpose; a drum can be used as a table stand or a pencil holder, a cooking

pot is easily transformed into a planter and necklaces can be used as curtain tiebacks, or can simply dangle off wardrobe keys. Cushions can be cushions, or they can be sewn together into a fabulous quilt, so too can prayer flags or patches of sari or other multicoloured materials. Baskets need not carry wood, fruit, or even children’s’ toys, they can instead take on decorative ambitions of their own – a collection of swirls and spirals in the browns and creams of traditional Zulu wire baskets hung closely together, will look mesmerising. Or a collection of bright-feathered ceremonial hats will look stunning against the dark wood of a long sideboard or a bed head. On the other hand, you might prefer a more

cohesive expression of Indian or African design. Perhaps the colonial look of the early Merchant Ivory movies has always appealed, or maybe it was a trip around the royal palaces of Rajasthan that inspired a little more adventure with colour. Colour is certainly of great importance in the Indian home, as are textures and layers – in fact the more the better. I once read an article in The Hindu Times that described the Indian home decorating style as being akin to a magpie that treasures all manner of bright and shiny things. Indeed there is evidence to show that Maharajahs and lowly rickshaw drivers alike are attracted to crystals and fast cars or neon lights and flashing deity pictures, and although it can look a little cluttered (and rather off-putting for the rickshaw driver), the intention is actually sumptuous decadence. This is what we can learn from them. Indian interiors make use of many layers of luxurious materials, especially in window treatments and in the bedroom where

Sin embargo, existen formas de incorporar y adaptar nuestros tesoros étnicos a nuestra casa, ¡sin tener que poner una placa encima de cada puerta para indicar en qué parte del mundo vamos a entrar! Después de años abandonado en un armario, el sari indio que compré en Karnataka ya ha encontrado su sitio, a modo de baldaquín colorido encima de la cama de mi hija. También he enmarcado mi colección de esculturas en miniatura de madera: sujetas a un lienzo con un diseño curioso y rodeadas de un marco llamativo a juego con sus tonos oscuros. Ya no están dispuestas en una triste fila a la espera de que ocurra algo interesante - como que les quiten el polvo por ejemplo. Los objetos no tienen porque ser usados u

con su propósito original; un tambor puede servir de mesa o de portalápices, una olla se transforma fácilmente en macetero y los collares son ideales como cintas de cortinas o simplemente colgando de los tiradores de los armarios. Las fundas de cojines, si no se usan como tal, se pueden coser entre sí para convertirse en fabulosas colchas, al igual que los saris y otras tantas telas cargadas de vida y color. Las cestas no tienen porque llevar fruta, leña o juguetes de niños, sino que pueden tener su propia función decorativa - una colección de cestas de alambre tradicionales zulúes formando remolinos y espirales y colgadas juntas producen un efecto óptico maravilloso. O una colección de sombreros de ceremonia con llamativas plumas quedará de fábula en contraste con la madera oscura de un largo aparador o de un cabecero de cama. Por otra parte, puede que prefieras más cohesión en la decoración, y te decantes por el arte indio o africano. Quizás te sientas atraído por el estilo colonial, o quizás por el

estilo aventurero y colorido inspirado en un viaje por los palacios reales de Rajastán. En la India, los colores juegan un papel muy importante, al igual que las texturas y las capas. En realidad cuantas más, mejor. Una vez leí un artículo en el Hindu Times que describía el estilo decorativo y lo asimilaba a una urraca que custodia todo tipo de objetos brillantes y llamativos. De hecho la prueba es que desde los maharajaes hasta los humildes conductores de carros, a todos les encanta los coches rápidos, las luces de neón y las imágenes de deidades con luces, y aunque pueda dar la sensación de desorden y confusión, lo que en realidad se pretende es crear la imagen de cierta “decadencia suntuosa”. valances and bed canopies are still popular. Colours are reds, burnt oranges and a hint of peacock blue is

often used in deference to this regal bird.Exotic wood features prominently in colonial styling, in furnishings and accessories. Teak, a beautiful yellow and brown hardwood, abundant in India and South East Asia, has been used across the centuries to fashion wooden thrones and intricate lattice screens, as well as today’s TV cabinets and more modern display units. Other exotic woods include rosewood and mahogany for furniture and for vases the aromatic Mozambican sandalwood and olive wood, which is often inlaid with bone. Ebony was used in cabinets and African sculptures and is a stunning near black wood, though it is worth noting that some species of ebony are not sustainable and are now protected. And, if a trip across the water seems a little too much effort for you, remember many of these items can be purchased locally in stores throughout the area or even from the lookey-lookey man as he moves from bar to bar offering his wares. Remember though, if you are to build an interesting collection from him, that doesn’t cost the earth, your negotiating skills will need to be every bit as sharp as if you were in the hustle and bustle of the souk.

Sure we have more sunshine and warmth than most of our european neighbours and for ten months of the year it is fabulous. However, we still experience a winter and if you are not fully prepared for it, it can come as a real shock to the system. The basic problem, as we all know, is that the vast majority of homes in this area are built to keep out heat with

little regard for the winter’s chill when you want to keep some of that heat in. But all is not lost. With some preparation, good advice and the right heating facility for your home you can even enjoy the chilly winter evenings snuggled up on the safa in front of the tv with as much heat in the house as you need. Historically, if you are having a house built and you are choosing a heating system during the construction of your home, you have only two main options to consider, under-floor heating or a centrally networked radiator systems. the ever increasing costs of traditional energy sources to power your central heating system, alternative renewable energy sources such as geothermal and solar are becoming increasingly popular. These provide simple, cheap, environment friendly technologies to heat your house, water and your pool if you require. Solar Energy as you may know uses the sun’s energy through increasingly more efficient solar panels located on your roof or land. The Andalusian climate allows the maximum use of such systems and provides a very efficient supply of heat and hot water. The modern solar systems can now provide solutions for all manner of heating issues providing hot water and hot air wherever you want it, whenever you want it.Geothermal Energy generates heat and energy from a short distance underground and can be gathered using circuits buried on your land. This technology has been used in northern European countries for more than 10 years to provide heating in winter and cooling in summer and can be very efficient.Because built-in heating systems have been so uncommon in the past in this part of Spain, the market for stand-alone units has flourished. These come in a wide variety of electric or butane gas heaters. These gas heaters tend to be large and boxy in order to house the butane bottles. Los sistemas modernos ofrecen soluciones para todo tipo de problemas de calefacción, equipando la vivienda con agua y aire caliente cuando lo quieras y de la forma que lo quieras. La energía geotermal genera calor y energía desde una distancia corta, bajo tierra, que se recoge usando circuitos subterráneos en el terreno de la vivienda. Se usa esta tecnología desde hace más de 10 años en varios países del norte de Europa para suministrar calor en invierno y frio en verano. Este puede ser un sistema muy eficaz. Dado que los sistemas de calefacción, integrados en la misma vivienda, todavía son algo nuevo en esta parte de España, el mercado de las estufas ha triunfado. Hay una amplia gama de estufas eléctricas o de bombonas de gas. Las que funcionan con una bombona suelen ser bastante grandes para poder incorporar la bombona dentro del dispositivo. Además de ocupar mucho espacio producen mucha humedad a la hora de encenderse. A pesar de este pequeño inconveniente hay personas que ven esto como una solución económica al problema invernal. Los radiadores de bajo consumo, que funcionan por electricidad, es una alternativa viable a las estufas de gas. Aunque estos radiadores se alimentan del suministro de electricidad consumen menor cantidad de energía que otros tipos de calefactores. El mejor de este tipo de radiador ofrece 2 o 3 niveles de potencia y un termostato con unos 10 ajustes diferentes. Una de las mejores fuentes de calor en este clima templado es una bomba de calor que extrae calor del aire y lo inyecta dentro de la casa. Funcionan con electricidad pero, una vez más, consume sólo una tercera parte de lo que usaría una estufa eléctrica. Tiene un coste inicial mayor que, por ejemplo, una estufa de gas pero, a largo plazo, se notará la diferencia. Una de las grandes desventajas de una estufa es encontrar una forma de incluirla en el diseño y la estética de la vivienda. Los radiadores resuelven este problema

dado que la mayoría de ellos se pueden colocar directamente en la pared. Lo último en la tecnología de calefacción se encuentra en los sistemas de infrarrojo, que además de ser muy económicos son muy sanos. Consumen menos cantidad de energía que los calentadores tradicionales y en vez de calentar el aire, como con los otros sistemas, las ondas infrarrojas calientan la vivienda en sí. Las paredes y los muebles guardan el calor mucho mejor que el aire y luego lo vuelve a introducir en la habitación. De esta forma las paredes se mantienen secas y se reduce el problema de humedad. Otra ventaja es que el aire no circula, así evitando que el polvo se mueva. Los sistemas de calefacción infrarroja vienen en tres colores además de diseños exclusivos como cuadros, espejos, cuencos, columnas, pizarras, cristalería y muchas otras cosas. Se pueden colocarlos en cualquier pared o incluso

en el techo. Y para terminar tenemos las estufas de leña. Esta es la opción de “fuego real” para calentar la casa. Son bonitas, crean un ambiente acogedor y son económicas a la hora de comprarlas. La leña puede ser cara pero si hablas con los proveedores muchas veces se puede comprar una gran cantidad a un precio reducido, que te durará todo el invierno. Tradicionalmente las casas en España siempre estaban frías durante el invierno, y no había remedio para solucionarlo. Ahora, todo esto ha cambiado y la tecnología ha proporcionado a los profesionales soluciones a todos tus requisitos en cuanto al calentamiento de tu casa. No importa lo específico que sea tu problema, hay personas que pueden ayudar. Los inviernos fríos aquí en España ya es algo del pasado, ¡ahora sí se puede disfrutar de calor los 365 días del año! n

Oil heaters are powered by electricity, but use far less

than standard electric units. The best of these heaters comes with two or three power levels accompanied by a thermostat with about 10 settings. One of the most ideal heat sources in this mild climate is a heat pump, which siphons heat from the air and puts it into your home. These are powered by electricity but use only about 1/3 the power required by a traditional electric heater. A heat pump will require a small initial investment, but will easily pay off in a very short time. One of the main disadvantages of stand-alone heaters is the difficulty in finding a way to incorporate units into the design and decor of each room in your home. Panel heaters provide an excellent solution to this problem. Most electric heaters, including oil radiators, can be obtained in the form of panel heating which mounts neatly on the wall. A very healthy and economical way of electrical heating is provided by the latest technology of infrared heating systems. They consume much less energy than conventional heaters do. In comparison to conventional heaters, Infrared waves don’t heat up the air, but the masonry. Walls and furniture store heat much longer than air does and they release it back into the living space. In this way, the walls remain dry and mould has no chance to spread. Another advantage is that air doesn’t circulate, thus no dust is lifted up into the air. si quieres llevar un bolso divertido para hacer destacar tu gran personalidad o llevar el último modelo a una

So anyway, about the smart new tailgate system. The idea is that you can open either the lower half of the tail – as

though a conventional boot lid – or the whole tailgate, including rear window, as one unit. The BMW has a rigid rear shelf which attaches to spring-loaded boards behind the foldable rear seats. The boards are able to cover the gap between folded seats and the boot fl oor. With the rear seats upright and slid to their

rearmost position, the ensemble forms a box which acoustically isolates the boot space and makes for quiet travelling in the very spacious rear cabin. That’s a part of the £40k plus purchase price, GT’s luxury ambience. Another part is the fact that the interior design and fi nish is that of a slightly ritzier 7-series, BMW’s biggest and most prestigious saloon.Fertile minds were, undoubtedly, exercised in this car’s creation, although

some do say that it lacks a little beauty, I like it but never the less, opinions do vary. Still, it’s a BMW so it will feel good on the road however it looks to you. Despite the 5-series tag, chosen to position the GT appropriately

in the BMW hierarchy, it owes more to the 7-series under the skin as well as in its cabin. Three engines are offered to begin with, all with turbochargers: petrol fuels the 4.4-litre, 550i V8 and the 3.0-litre straight-six in the 535i, while diesel feeds the also-straight-six 530d. All have an automatic n

gearbox whose eight gear ratios make it hard to remember where you are should you desire some manual intervention. It’s better not to bother, and enjoy the engines’ smoothness and impressive pulling ability. This being an up-range BMW, various hi-tech options such as unnecessary ‘active steering’ (which artifi cially hastens response at low speeds) can be applied to suspension which is already fi tted with self-levelling air springs at the back and adaptive dampers all round. The latter can be set to Comfort, Normal, Sport and Sport Plus, with corresponding changes to steering weighting and accelerator eagerness. Helpful messages on a central screen describe the settings to help you manage the car that almost dosen’t need your help as it does just fi ne on it’s own.Underneath the technology overload though is a fi ne car with a great pedigree behind it. It offers delightful engines, a smooth ride and quite remarkable agility. It’s a great solution, though to what problem, I am not quite sure.

Route of Sun and Wine. Lying 5 kilometers to the east of Torre del Mar along the coastal road N-340 it can be found just 4 kilometers inland. Algarrobo is a lovely village and coastal area and boasts several places to stop for a drink and a bite to eat. que no les defraudarán. Para llegar al siguiente pueblo de la ruta tenemos que volver a Cómpeta y coger la carretera en dirección a Torróx, que está a 15 kilómetros. Aquí encontraremos playas fabulosas, restaurantes estupendos y según muchos, el mejor clima de Europa. El Pueblo es español muy auténtico pero la costa es donde la actividad es, aún fuera de la temporada del verano.Desde Torróx Costa la ruta continúa por la nacional 340 en dirección este. Antes de llegar a Nerja, hay una carretera a la izquierda que va a Frigiliana. Es posible que éste sea el pueblo más famoso del interior en la zona y sobre él se han hecho programas de televisión tanto en el Reino Unido como en España. El

pueblo conserva su auténtico carácter espanol pero toda la marcha está en la costa, incluso en temporada baja. Para llegar a la última parada de la Ruta del Sol y del Vino es necesario retroceder hacia la costa donde nos encontraremos con Nerja, que posiblemente es el pueblo más conocido de toda la región de la Axarquía. Para muchos, Nerja en temporada baja es el sitio ideal para disfrutar de los alrededores sin el estrés del turismo de las vacaciones de verano.Bueno, este es un rápido repaso a la Ruta del Sol y del Vino. Espero que encuentren el tiempo para explorar la ruta y disfrutar de los fantásticos restuarantes a lo largo del camino. up a further 9 kilometers until we reach Competa, the main inland

village of the region and often referred to as the Pearl of the Axarquia. It’s historic past and modern day facilities combine to make Competa a real destination to enjoy. Village life in Competa is a pleasure to experience and even more so with a glass of local wine in a friendly establishment, of which there are many. Be sure to visit the wine shop in the centre of the village. From Competa, a short distance of 3 kilometers takes the route to Canillas de Albaida. This quaint village with it’s peace and tranquility offers another delightful place to stop on your sun and wine route. Do make sure you take a little time to experience the hospitality, wine and local cuisine, you will not be disappointed. To reach the next village on the route we return to Competa and take the road for Torrox which is 15

kilometers on. Fabulous beaches, great restaurants and the best climate in europe according to many. The village is very authentic Spanish but the coast is where the action is, even off season. From Torrox Costa the route follows the coastal N-340 in an easterly direction. Before reaching Nerja, a road to the left leads inland to Frigiliana. Perhaps the most famous of the inland villages in this area and the subject of many high profile TV shows in the UK and Spain. The last stop on the Route of Sun and Wine is reached by retracing the road from Frigiliana back down to the coast and on to Nerja, perhaps the most well know town in the whole of the Axarquia region. Out of season it is still a favorite location for many who like to enjoy the surroundings without the hustle and bustle of a busy coastal resort in summertime. n

So that’s a quick review of the Sun & Wine Route. I hope you will find some time to explore the route and enjoy the many fabulous restaurants along the way. Oh, and of course, you will need to schedule in a little time to sample the local wines as well, after all, it’s what the route is intended for. Now, where to find a chauffeur?

Aun así, antes de que aparecieran los sistemas de transporte modernos, la dificultad de conservar y transportar el pescado fresco marino hizo que se consumiera menos en zonas del interior, donde el pescado de agua dulce se comía más comúnmente. Así es como se creó el sushi, como un intento para solucionar el problema de la conservación del pescado. However, before the introduction of modern delivery systems, the difficulty of preserving and transporting fresh marine fish minimised consumption in inland areas where freshwater fish were commonly eaten instead. In an effort to find a solution to the problem of preserving fish, sushi was created. Fish that are salted and placed in rice are preserved by lactic acid fermentation, which prevents proliferation of the bacteria that bring about putrefaction. A unique fifteenth-century development increased the preservation period of sushi

to one or two weeks and made both the fish and the rice not only edible but delicious. As a result, sushi became a popular snack food throughout the country. Sushi without fermentation appeared around the period of the 1600’s and the more modern day sushi was created towards the end of the eighteenth century, when the hand-rolled type that we are all familar with (nigiri-sushi) was devised.Today sushi is enjoyed all over the world with modern day techniques applied in many forms to make sushi a commercial product for a worldwide market in shops and supermarkets but, to really enjoy sushi as it was intended all those years ago, a restaurant is where you want to be. There are lots to fi nd on the doorstep, including the Tropical Valley, the Caves of Nerja, and the Sierra Nevada Natural Park. If you’re going for a hike in the Alpujarras, be sure to stop in at the local bars along the way. You’ll see hams that were raised and cured in the mountains, likely within minutes of the establishment. Try the local dishes like ajoblanco, (cold soup like gazpacho except with almonds instead of tomatoes), or try the Pinchitos Morunos (Moroccan Kebabs), which combine traditional Spanish methods with Moroccan spices from just across the water. Be sure to indulge in the local Spanish wines when you are out and about, some of them are really very good.
