You just have to use a tried and trusted method.Let us assume (ahem!) that you’ve had your chimney inspected and cleaned so that there’s no build-up of flammable creosote to worry about, you’ve taken the old ashes to your compost pile and your fireplace is now clean and ready to begin.Firstly, look up your chimney to make sure the damper is open. A ‘throat damper’ is located at the bottom of the chimney and will open with a lever or with chain-pulls. If you have a ‘top damper,’ it’s located at the top of the chimney (obviously) and you open it by pulling a cable.�

but, with the help of interior designer Martin Lockwood, you will be enjoying your fireside bliss in no time at all.

Ensure you have already cleared the hearth of anything flammable.

Now crumple 2 or 3 sheets of newspaper and put them in your fireplace grate. The fireplace grate enables your fire to pull in the air it needs to keep a good draft going up the chimney. Put a good handful of kindling strips on top of the paper. Better yet, use some fatwood for the kindling if you have access to it. Fatwood is a natural, chemical-free part of a pine tree, cut into easy to use sticks. On top of the kindling, criss-cross 8 or 10 dry pieces of hardwood. These pieces need to be larger than kindling but not as big as logs.The next step is very important. Crumple two more sheets of newspaper and light them, holding them up inside the fireplace to warm the flue and establish an upward flow of air.Then light the paper in your fireplace grate from each end. When the paper lights the kindling, and the kindling lights the hardwood, it’s time to add 2 or 3 logs. Place the logs toward the rear of the fireplace so it will reflect heat into the room as it burns. As the fire gets established, you can add more logs. Place your fireplace

screen or spark guard in front of your fire to protect your family and home from stray sparks.With practice, you will use just enough logs so that the fire burns down to glowing embers by bedtime. It is ok to leave a fire burning out during the night but please make sure a fireplace screen is standing guard over your fireplace just in case.Here are a few good tips: Use just enough softwood for kindling to get the fire going. Burning pine for firewood quickly builds up creosote in your chimney, setting up conditions for a chimney fire. Fatwood and commercial fire starters can take the place of kindling.For logs, use dry hardwood (oak, maple, cherry, hickory or olive). The ideal firewood has dried for about one year. Don’t burn plastics or paper with color printing, such

as magazine pages or gift wrap, because they may give off toxins. And finally, no matter what, never use flammable liquids in your fireplace.A well lit fire will add a warmth and cosiness to any room. Be safe and sensible and your fire will be enjoyed by all during the colder winter months.

Con un mechero o cerilla, quemaremos un par de papeles o cartones y los introduciremos arriba, de manera que se sujeten un poquito a la pira, para ir calentando el aire y que empiece a circular hacia arriba. Luego, se van encendiendo por las puntas los trozos de papel colocados debajo. El fuego se irá propagando del papel a los palos y después a los troncos. Entonces es el momento de meter los troncos más gruesos. Es conveniente ubicarlos al fondo de la chimenea para que hagan de pared reflectante e irradien más calor a la sala. Una vez hemos conseguido una candela consistente, se irá añadiendo más madera. No olvide poner la pantalla de contención o salva-chispas, para evitar que las ascuas salten y puedan provocar algún accidente doméstico. n

Con la práctica, iremos refinando la técnica y desperdiciando menos leña, manteniendo el fuego su vigor hasta la hora de irnos a la cama, en que sólo deben quedar brasas. No es recomendable dejar un fuego encendido cuando se va a dormir, por eso insistimos en la importancia de poner un protector, ya que siempre es mejor prevenir que curar.A continuación, algunos consejos útiles:Para iniciar el fuego, emplea ramas, listones y palos de madera tierna, que también pueden ser reemplazados por fastwoods y otros aceleradores de la combustión ligeros. La madera de pino genera mucha creosota, pudiendo dar lugar a la larga a

incendios u obturación de la chimenea. La leña que mejor arde es la de roble, arce, cerezo, nogal u olivo. Además, es importante que esté seca, a ser posible, al menos de un año.No quemes plásticos o papel impreso a color, como revistas o envoltorios, ya que desprenden tóxicos en el ambiente.Y, por último, nunca, bajo ningún concepto, utilices o tengas líquidos inflamables cerca de la chimenea.Un fuego confortable y duradero, aportará calidez y bienestar a cualquier hogar. Sé cauto y hazlo de forma prudente, y ten por seguro que todos se arrimarán a su abrigo en los meses más fríos del invierno.

Paintball has become one of the world’s most exciting

outdoor participation sports, played in over 40 countries by millions of men and women of all ages and lifestyles. Like a game of chess, being able to think quickly and decisively is what makes you a star in paintball. Intelligence and determination, not merely strength, speed or agility, are key to success in the sport.Paintball is effectively a combination of the childhood games “tag” and “hide & seek,” but is much more challenging and sophisticated. There are many different game formats but typically a group of players will divide into two teams to play “capture the flag” for example. The object of the game is to go out and capture the other team’s flag while protecting your own. While you are trying to capture a flag, you also try to eliminate opposing players by tagging them with a paintball expelled from a special airgun called a “paintgun.” This is not as dangerous as it may seem as paintball players always wear goggles specifically designed for paintball to protect their eyes, a protective facemask and special suits to go over the players own clothes. Referees on the field enforce safety and game rules. No physical contact is permitted in the game, and players are ejected from games for breaking safety or playing rules. Paintball is a character-building sport. Players learn about teamwork, gain self-confidence and develop leadership abilities while having fun and getting welcome stress-relief. Increasingly, corporations are finding the benefits of having their staff and management participate in paintball games.It is an exciting sport and above all it is fun!
