    Written by Betty Hudson

In 2004, I bet my husband a nickel that I could write a book. He told me to shut up and do it

although he didnt say it quite so nicely. Well, I did it and won the nickel. And I havent stopped

writing. Now he says Im full of it! He doesnt say of what which is probably a good thing. Within

weeks of completing my first novel, I received a stunning review from Jacqueline Leo, the Vice-

President and Editor-in-Chief of Readers Digest. My first novel was also reviewed by a Select

Editions Editor. Ms. Leo actually offered to pass my manuscript on to Mort Janklow who repre-sents Danielle Steel. Needless to say, there is a story behind that story.

Since winning that nickel, I have completed three novels. Bet of Betrayal is the ultimate story of

seduction. It begins on the Pier at Garden City with three young women sipping wine coolers and

talking about men! Where Gabriels Trumpet Sounds is an epic story of love and faith. It begins

in the little mountain town of Laurel Springs, North Carolina. Dance of Desires is my emotional

thriller. It also begins on the Garden City Pier.

I am currently feverishly working to complete my fourth novel - Sleeping Booty - before

Thanksgiving so I can have it available for sale by the Easter holidays. Sleeping Booty is a

thrilling adventure. Of course, the story begins on the Garden City Pier when Andrea Beltons

daisy flip-flop breaks, and she lands plop on top of Steven Tyler, the love of her life. Andreas plot-

ting to secure Stevens love unknowingly lands them on board a freighter that gets hijacked by

modern-day pirates and diverted to the Somali coast. Then Andrea gets taken hostage! It is the

    ultimate booty call!

I moved to Garden City Beach ten years ago from Winston-Salem, NC. I graduated summa cum

laude from Salem College in Winston-Salem, NC. I am part of a very blended family. Sometimes

I think I have a wisteria bush growing in my brain and that my husband is slipping Miracle-Gro in

my coffee. I could never have imagined that I would ever write a book. And even more astonish-

ing is that I have turned the writing and selling of my books into a business - Betty Hudson Books.I self-publish my books which means that I am responsible for every aspect of writing, editing,

designing covers, and marketing. This means I am always looking for ways to shamelessly pro-

mote my books. Thankfully, hundred of readers are coming back to the Pier each year to get my

newest release. I have sold books to readers from almost every state and many different coun-

tries. My website bettyhudsonbooks.com is getting thousands of visitors.

I must admit my fame as an author is spreading. I have been chased down in a K-Mart store.

Unfortunately, my fame doesnt do dishes or laundry or clean bathrooms. As I mentioned earlier,

as a small business owner, I do it all! My books can be ordered from any major bookstore. They

are also available at the Beehive in Murrells Inlet and Donahues Produce in Garden City. But for

the best deals on my books, check out my website. And I deliver to the Pier. I want to say a spe-

cial thank you to the management at the Pier at Garden City where I have sold my books during

the summers. Paula, I couldnt have done this without you!

After Sleeping Booty, I have plans for A Fantastic Tale, The Perfect Screwdriver, and The Secret

Place of Thunder. Proof positive that I am (as my husband likes to brag) full of it! Of course,

these are my plans. And if this is Gods will for my life, it will come to pass.

Why Use A Realtor? If you had a $100,000 income tax problem, would you attempt to deal with it without the help of a CPA?If you had a $100,000 legal question, would you deal with it without an attorney? Your REALTORcan help you determine your buying power that is, your financial reserves plus your borrowing capac-ity. Considering the small upside cost and the large downside risk, it would be foolish to consider adeal in real estate without the professional assistance of a REALTOR.

    Giving Thanks!

November is a month for giving thanks and we at Select Homes & Services feel very thankful!Amidst all the pessimism that seems to be associated with the real estate industry we have foundthat if we focus on continuing to do our job with a positive, optimistic attitude positive things hap-pen. We believe in the old saying like attracts like and we understand that this means good or

bad. We choose the good and thats what we focus on and as a result we have increased our

staff and sales over the past eight months in some of the most trying economic times.

Of course this does not only pertain to real estate. It pertains to every aspect of our everyday lives

and you know what? We really do have the power to change the way we perceive our environ-ment. If like really does attract like what do you choose?

So, why not try the positive effect. It really can snowball. We are proving it at Select Homes & Services

and all we have to say is THANKS.

    The PopularityOf Short Sales

Short Sales have become a popular way in todays market to sell a home for our clients to pre-vent foreclosure. Doing a short sale allows you, the seller, to sell your home for less than whatyou owe the mortgage company. You must obtain the mortgage companies approval for a shortsale to begin the process. Most mortgage companies are on board with short sale options, and

your home must be sold by a realtor. Although there is a few months timeframe to complete ashort sale, this allows you adequate time to plan your future. As we all know, the Grand Strandarea, as well as the rest of the country is suffering financial hardship due to poor economy, whichwe hope will bounce back shortly. By having the option of a short sale, this will prevent your cred-it score from taking a drastic dive, which could affect you in obtaining a new mortgage in thefuture.

My experience with multiple short sales have allowed me to become specialized with this tediousprocess. This has helped me help many avoid the financial burden of foreclosure.

Keep it short and sweet to keep you on your feet!

You worked hard, saved your money, secured a company pension, built up a 401(k), and invest-

ed well. In short, you made all the right choices in planning for retirement. But that was then; this

is now. The stock market's collapse since 2007 has pummeled Americans' retirement accounts,

wiping out more than $3 trillion in value, by one estimate.

If that weren't worrisome enough, retirement expenses are also growing by the year. Our life

expectancy continues to increase 77.7 years and rising, according to the federal Centers for

Disease Control and Prevention while the cost of living keeps going up as well. This means

your retirement years are likely to be longer and more expensive than you thought.

Facing these unnerving facts, people who once invested heavily in the stock market are now play-

ing defense in their retirement planning. Many Americans appear to be fleeing stocks and shifting

more of their nest eggs to cash and fixed-income instruments in response to the latest downturn.

Most financial professionals agree that a prudent strategy for limiting vulnerability in volatile eco-

nomic conditions is to spread one's assets among a range of investments with varying levels of

risk. Yes, stocks may still be part of the mix, but so may bonds and fixed annuities.

For people that have a rainy day fund with no immediate need for it and want death protec-

tion is life insurance. A single-premium universal life insurance policy such as NYLIAC's Instant

LegacyTM is designed to guarantee* a financial legacy for the policyholder's heirs, generally free

from federal income tax, while also providing a number of living benefits. One of the living ben-

efits such policies offer is access** to your money when you need i t, provided that your death ben-

efit protection needs have decreased. In uncertain times, you may want to consider this kind offlexibility.

    * Guarantees backed by the claims-paying ability of the issuer.

** A policys cash value may be accessed via policy loans and/or partial surrenders. Policy loans accrue

interest at the current rate. Loans and partial surrenders reduce the death benefit and cash value. Policy loans

and withdrawals may be subject to regular income and may carry a 10% IRS penalty tax if the policyowner

    is not yet 59 1/2.

    Table Talking byChef Pauly B

Well, fall is upon us and the holidays are gaining fast. With Thanksgiving just around the cornerand Christmas rapidly approaching, you may find yourself ready to dust off the bake wear andstart making those magnificent goods so commonly acquainted with the holiday season. October

has passed and if your house is like mine there are pumpkins left behind from Halloween. As longas they have not been transformed into jack olanterns, I tend to add a few gourds and leave themaround as decorations through November.

There are many things that remind us of Thanksgiving, but nothing is more prominent than thebig orange pumpkin. I dont enjoy cooking with pumpkins, I prefer to use canned pumpkin inbreads and cakes, pies and torts. There are a lot of recipes utilizing pumpkin. Pumpkin bread is

one of my favorites. Ive been known to bake these small loafs for friends and family. After mak-ing the bread, let it dry out and you can make it into a great holiday bread pudding. Pumpkinbread can be baked and tightly wrapped and frozen, then defrosted later, when needed. Pre-planyour holiday feast and set aside time to cook some items ahead of time so that the task of cook-

ing remains fun and doesnt become overwhelming. Enjoy the time with family and friends andtake even more enjoyment in cooking for them! Below is a recipe for pumpkin bread pudding, Ihope you like it as much as I do.

    Dine Well,

    Chef Pauly B.Happy Thanksgiving!

Thursday, November 19, 2009Submitted by DeAnthony Hill BAD Incorporated

Nationally known comedian and syndicated morning show radio host Rickey Smiley will be per-

forming live at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center on Thursday, November 19, 2009.

Recognized for his clean comedy shows that feature a host of comedic trademark character

highest ratings jump in its 10-year history. Smiley also played a lead role in Ice Cubes Friday After

Next (2002), and has been featured on shows such as Showtime at the Apollo, and HBOs Def

Comedy Jam. In addition, hes also released several comedy albums to critical acclaim. Currently,
