We are very pleased to be able to ensure that future generations of Molescroft students will reap the benefits of the space. The space also has the additional bonus of providing inspiration and a resource for curriculum work particularly in Science, Geography and the Arts. It also has the added benefit of providing a lovely outdoor learning classroom and a podium for our sporting presentations. JP Developers are already fast at work in replacing the worn timber. The resource will be around for many more moles to explore and learn from.

£5000 INVESTMENT FROM TESCO Dear Parents, Carers, Governors, Friends, Staff and Pupils

Thank you to Tesco and thank you to everyone who put a little token in our slot in the Tesco “Bags for Charity” Boxes.Parents will no doubt be familiar with the Tesco scheme to spend the money it raises through the sale of plastic bags to support community activities.

We were absolutely thrilled to find out we had secured first place and £5,000 after the voting finished. The money is to be used to refurbish our Conservation Area.

Our conservation area is much loved by our students

and this grant will enable us to refresh the timber decking and walkways which were first constructed in 2005 and are beginning to show their age.

Our youngest children use the area for “Forest School” activities, while every afternoon groups of children have their turn to appreciate the environment and the visiting wildlife, grow vegetables, maintain the various habitats and appreciate how we can influence our environment for the benefit of all life.

We are very pleased to be able to ensure that future generations of Molescroft students will reap the benefits of the space. The space also has the additional

bonus of providing inspiration and a resource for curriculum work particularly in Science, Geography and the Arts. It also has the added benefit of providing a lovely outdoor learning classroom and a podium for our sporting presentations.

R Annual Charity Fund Raising Campaign Last year the children raised a staggering £4849.10 and bought 192 fully equipped rucksacks for homeless people.

Most of you will be familiar with our Annual Charity Fundraising Appeal. This period matches our Citizenship Week and invites the pupils to consider how they may help causes in need.

The Pupils’ Charity Appeal is one of the main events in the Molescroft Primary School calendar. Not only does it achieve the obvious aim of charitable giving it succeeds on other fronts too. Firstly the children develop their organisational skills and team work. Secondly the relationship and bond between pupils and staff develops as the pupils manage to cajole teachers into participating in events … possibly out of their comfort zone. Thirdly pupils’ talents are displayed and shared and frequently discovered. There are more than a few emotional moments during the fortnight.

Last week the children had the opportunity to complete forms in order to organise special events outside teaching hours or to perhaps organise a stall. Once again the children have come up with an intriguing variety of shows, stalls and activities.

I do hope therefore that Parent/Carers will continue to value this very special time in school. The pupils are reminded however that this is not supposed to be a raid on parents’ purses. The

pupils themselves are to make a sacrifice here and there, from their pocket money to support the events they wish and can afford to attend. It is certainly not expected that children attend every event.

The organisation of the week has continued to evolve this year following decisions made by the pupil council. Like last year children could bid to present one type of event e.g. a singing competition or TV Game Show or Dance Show, etc. Following the huge and unexpected success of the Health and Beauty Fair, a one hour slot has been found for this in the hall.

Again rather than having busking every night at 3:20pm we have combined the busking into one evening all over the site.

As before, teachers will support the children but the children will be responsible for their own organisation.

Those wishing to organise a stall or a game such as a lucky dip are doing so at a special Charity Fayre on Tuesday 21st November from 1:30pm to 4.00pm. This is having an earlier start to enable the stall holders to visit the stalls as well. The hall will be open to Parent/Carers also wishing to support the children’s fund raising efforts.

The full programme of events and activities has just been published,. Some brief details are listed on the diary at the end of this letter.

The Pupil Council decided that they wished to return this year to the traditional format of selecting in December a number of charities to receive the money raised.

It has been agreed that we shall alternate year on year from this format with the “Appeal” style for one cause.

The pupils are already asked to think not only of the charities they would like to support this year, but also what could be the appeal focus in 2018.

The first donation to the Charity total was the £142.63 raised from the sale of Harvest

produce and soup.

R Countdown to the Friends’ Christmas Fayre Donations welcome anytime On Sunday 3rd December 11:00 am to 2:00 p.m. the ‘Friends’ are hosting the annual Christmas Fayre. This is, as most of you know, the biggest fundraising event of the Friends’ year and, once again are asking for your help to make it another resounding success. There will be lots of old favourites including Santa’s grotto, tombola, chocolate tombola, jam jar tombola, many games and prizes, raffle, refreshments and many craft stalls.

The ‘Friends’ will be extremely grateful for items for any of the tombola stalls – unwanted gifts, new books and toys, chocolate and soft toys. Filled jam jars (filled with anything you like) for the jam jar tombola are now a firm favourite. Please note sweets in jars must be wrapped. We regret we are unable to accept second hand books, jigsaws, DVDs, CD’s and toys (other than cuddly toys for the teddy tombola).

We will, as ever be grateful if anyone can spare an hour or so on the day to help out on a stall, set up or clear away.

The Friends Association have also asked if the Choir will be willing to provide some festive music at 12.30pm and 1:30pm. A number of games are also being organised. Last year nearly £3000 was raised at this event. The Friends work tirelessly for the school and all our pupils benefit so much from their work.

One of the obvious benefits of the work of the ‘Friends’ is the Adventure Playground, but the Friends have purchased so much more including 84 iPads, the fully fitted kitchen, Tony Knight Centre, Curtains in the Hall & the new Maths Mastery materials The difference the Friends Association makes to the learning, happiness and wellbeing of your children is immense. OUR NEXT TARGET is 1 iPad for every KS2 child. Please note that the Fayre opens at 11:00am ... just in

time for lunch and we are catering just for you! This is the ‘Friends’ biggest event of the year. They need your support.

The Friends Association have asked once again if the Choir could perform at 12:30pm and 1:30pm.

Witness the winners of the Voice and our other talented Moles in our charity winners’ show.

CHARITY WINNERS SHOW Monday 27th November at 5pm Following the huge success over the past four years, the children who win the various talent shows in the Charity Fundraising fortnight are to perform at a special winners’ concert at 5pm on Monday 27th November in the Hall. This

will include all the children who are selected in “The Voice” who will “sing off” to be declared the winner.

Tickets will be available to adults and children for £2 each. A booking form will be sent home after the charity fundraising week.

Remembering keeps hopes alive We must never forget As Remembrance Day falls on a Saturday this year, we won’t be holding an assembly at the Beverley War Memorial. However I shall be attending the service at the War Memorial at about 11:45 on Sunday 12th November. Parents/Carers with their

children are naturally welcome to join me at the Hengate Memorial. We shall lay our school wreath at this service.

We shall dedicate our wreath at the Enterprise Day Assembly on the Friday before.

LOVE IN A SHOEBOX This is one of the most moving and engaging events in the school year. A simple idea which sends so much love round the world.

Every year the Operation Christmas Child Charity organises the collection of Christmas presents. The gifts are airlifted to children in Eastern Europe and Africa who would otherwise receive no present this year. These presents are prepared in a shoebox. I am inviting again families in Molescroft to be involved in this project. Full details are included in a leaflet to be distributed after half term. It gives details of what can and cannot be sent. We are organising this collection to coincide with our Citizenship Fortnight. The shoeboxes are to be collected from school on Friday 24th November in a special assembly. Last year 446 shoeboxes were sent from

Molescroft School, which is quite amazing as it is more boxes than pupils. It was a truly remarkable sight. Extra leaflets are available from the school office.

One or two parents, were quite rightly concerned five years ago following newspaper reports of children being forced to ‘sign up for Jesus’ on receipt of a shoebox. I received a categorical guarantee that this never happens with boxes from the UK. This is confirmed on the charity’s UK website. Chris Webb, who has collected from Molescroft for 13 years now has personally supervised the hand out on many occasions. I am convinced of her integrity and her confirmation that children receive the gifts regardless of faith, and background and that through the project, contacts have been made which have saved lives and offered children life enhancing operations.

Operation Christmas Child was a UK charity which grew so popular that it needed a sponsor charity to pay the freight costs or the boxes could not be sent. This is how Samaritan’s Purse became involved. Their CEO in America has expressed views which many of us would be unhappy with. I am however assured that they have no impact or involvement in the UK operation.

We must never forget, for the sake of our children’s future.

A BOX OF LOVEOperation Christmas Child Leaflets will be sent home after the half term holiday.Additional Leaflets will be available from the office. They describe what can and cannot be sent in a shoebox.Starting to collect things for the shoebox could be a nice half term activity. If parents need information in advance of the leaflets please visit www.samaritans-purse.org.uk

NOW LIGHT 2000 CHRISTMAS LIGHTS The start of our Christmas Magic. Continuing our tradition there will be a special assembly to welcome the decoration of the Christmas tree and the start of the school’s festive preparations. This will be held on Friday 1st December at 10am. The event is a gift to the the children and involves a considerable amount

of secret preparation. Unfortunately not everyone can attend, however Governors, Staff, Friends Association Committee Members and Volunteer Helpers are most welcome. The assembly will conclude with the lighting of both our indoor tree with 2000 lights and the outdoor tree, illuminated by lights provided by the Parish Centre Committee.

CHRISTMAS ADVANCE WARNING In the advance diary you will see the dates for the main events in December. I hope this helps working parents who wish to attend school time events.

Parents/Carers of children in Y4 to Y6 (and Y3 children in the choir) are particularly asked to note that the KS2 Festival of Christmas is being held as always at Beverley Minster. This year it is on Monday 18th December at 7 p.m. It is expected that every Y4 to Y6 child and choir member will attend (except for religious reasons). The choir and every class will be preparing items for this event. In addition the children from Y4 to Y6 will perform on the recorder.

If your child really cannot attend please write a brief note to the class teacher so that teachers can prepare knowing who will be there. It is very disappointing when gaps suddenly appear. I am very grateful to staff for facilitating this annual event on an evening so that Parent/Carers can attend without

having to rearrange daytime work commitments. Holding it at the Minster also enables us to welcome everyone to the celebration regardless of age and without ticket restriction.

CHRISTMAS ART COMPETITION The Beverley Lights CommitteeOnce again the Beverley Lights Committee would like to invite children to take part in their Christmas Art Competition. The children are asked to create a Christmas Card in any medium, but

no cotton wool! There will be 4 winners and 16 runner up prizes. In addition the winners’ cards will be made into real cards to be sold next year in aid of the Beverley Lights.

Each card must have on the back, the child’s 1) name 2) age 3) address and telephone number. All entries must be handed in by Saturday 11th November by 12noon at either of the following locations: “Shirley’s” Lairgate,or “Collections” Angel Square. Prize winners will be contacted and prizes will be given. on 23rd November 2017 by the famous Ben Shires in Saturday Market at 6:30pm,

The Children in Year 1 and the Foundation Year will be presenting their own Christmas Assembly. While Y2 & Y3 will be presenting a Pantomime. The Orchestra will also be hosting a Festival of Christmas Music.

All these events will be ticket only. Booking forms will be issued in November.

The famous Christmas Tree Assembly, it’s a gift to the children.

R Enterprise Day 2017 Putting the curriculum into the real world. November is traditionally the time when at Molescroft we consider the many facets of being a good citizen and place our work in the context of the wider world. There are a number of special events outlined in this newsletter on this theme including the Charity Fund Raising Fortnight, Operation Christmas Child and Remembrance.

Linked to our Citizenship Fortnight on Friday 10th November, Mrs. Grainger with the Team has organised another Young Enterprise Day. This year as always everyone is involved.

The programme of activities is shown below. I am sure the children will have much to tell when they finish the event. The children are to experience a day in which the curriculum is clearly linked to the real world and people in the community.

I am grateful to the volunteers who will be helping across the school. Although not a cheap day to organise the value of the event has been immeasurable and the cumulative effect year on year not to be underestimated. I am not aware of any other school, which provides this event every year for all its pupils.

To support the school in funding this initiative, I would be grateful if parent/carers are willing to send just £1 to school on 10th November, it will make a big difference. Thank you all in advance.

On the day itself please put £1 in an envelope marked Enterprise Day.

WHO IS DOING WHAT…

Foundation are focusing on 'People who help us' and will have various visitors from the

Emergency Services throughout the week.

Yr 1 - are considering local business and what is important for their survival.  They'll be visiting the local shop and bakery before returning for a programme of events including baking buns, advertising their product and designing packaging.

Yr 2 - are using the Smoothie bike to design and create their own healthy smoothies before considering advertising and selling them later that day.

Yr 3 - will be creating Molescroft newspapers on the day's events.  They will be joined by Paul Smith the photographer, journalist and creator of on line magazine HU17 who will be offering his expert advice and practical skills.

Yr 4 - are to visit Tescos in the morning to investigate product placement and the variety of pastas on offer.  On their return they will investigate, devise and create their own pasta with a keen eye on price and product design.

Yr 5 - are focusing on Fair Trade and will be creating an animated advert promoting Fair Trade on the iPads.

Yr 6 - are having a two day event designing and making products in teams.  The top products will be pitched at the final Dragons' Den assembly.  Visitors will be supporting through the second day with advice and input on marketing products and be Dragons at the end of the day.

NEWS FROM THE PUPIL COUNCIL Our newly elected Pupil Councillors have met and completed a review of the organisation of their ‘parliament’

• Separate the council into a KS1 and a KS2 meeting The council had a vote and voted against the separation of the council with a clear majority. The council will stay as one council.

• Change members every termIt was felt that members should see out a full term (the whole year) as a council member.

• Tell the agenda points in assemblyGreat idea. The agenda focus will be announced in advance during Mrs Hakner’s assembly so everyone is clear of what is being discussed.

• Make presentations from the council to the schoolAnother yes. This will occur during Mr Loncaster’s assembly. The council will need to sit near the front and can feed back to the whole school.

• More than three representatives elected. The older council members to sit with the younger members of the council so Year 6 sit with Foundation, Year 5 with Year 1 etc this will help to support the younger members of the council.

• All three representatives come to the meetingThe only difficulty with everyone coming is that there isn’t enough space. A vote was taken and the majority voted in favour of the Vices not coming.

• Hold more frequent meetings. The cycle runs on a three week period to ensure that members can meet with their class, then with Mrs Grainger and then with Mrs Grainger and Mr Loncaster. It was agreed that this was all we could manage.

• Ask more adults to attend to help the younger children. No more adults are required if older children sit and help out the younger ones.

• Have formal election boxes for September elections Excellent idea. Mrs Grainger to organise.

Our newly elected Pupil Councillors have also agreed on the following topics that will be discussed over the year, just like The Queen’s Speech! Potential topics:Lunch time games / wet play times resourcesMarble treats and the reward system and themed treats PE equipment and sportsClubsPlayground & use of the fieldSchool visits and visitorsSafety IssuesSchool bags, rucksacks and water bottlesUse of the library, Computers, ICT and iPadsLunch times – food, equipment issuesGender issuesBuddiesHow teams are chosen – equality in the schoolGender Issues and Equality

R GOVERNOR OF THE MONTH: Alex LazenbyFollowing the 2016 Parent/Carer survey, it was suggested that in order to help parents to get a better knowledge of the governing body, a feature should be included in the newsletter.

Thank you to Community Governor: Mrs. Alex Lazenby for this month’s feature.

I became a parent governor at Molescroft during the summer term of 2017. I’ve found this experience challenging as well as rewarding as I don’t have a background in education.

I work for Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust as a Contracts Manager. The main aspect of my role is negotiating and managing contracts with commissioners and other providers. Other aspects of this role include supporting services in responding to tenders, service developments and establishing networks across multiple providers to provide sustainable services to patients.

I have been married to Steve for 17 years, who works at Leconfield army camp in Establishments. We have two boys, Ben, who is at Longcroft and Matthew who is in his final year at Molescroft.

Outside of work, you’ll find me on the sidelines of the rugby pitch. Both boys for Hullensians RFU and I love watching them. I am the team manager for Ben’s team, and if that’s not enough I tend to co-ordinate the running of the club prior to and on match day.

I am also in my final year of studying for my Masters in Health and Social Services Management at Bradford University.

MOLES IN ACTIONSophie, Olivia and Ryan win top prize in DerbyshireC.L.B is a club very much like Guides and Scouts. You can join when you are five and stay as long as you like; some people have been in for 30 years! Having reached the ripe old age of 9 members can join the band where members can play most instruments. Ryan plays the drum, Sophie plays the symbols and Olivia plays the Glockenspiel.

Recently their branch entered a competition in Derby against ten other teams and they were crowned supreme champions.

Ryan is very experienced in competitions but this was Sophie and Olivia’s first time of entering.Well done and congratulations. It’s great to get to know about our pupils’ success in out of school activities.

School Meals are Excellent Value.Any Parent/Carer or Grandparent who would like to come to school and enjoy dinner with their children is welcome to do so. Just telephone the office before 10:00 am. on or before the school day* to reserve a meal. Please bring photo ID with you. Adult meals cost £3.40. A child’s meal costs £2.40. It is excellent value, and by educating children away from a diet of crisps and processed food we are together building a lifetime of good eating habits and healthy hearts.

DINNERS MUST BE PREPAID, no more than £2.40 will be accepted in arrears. Money must be sent to the classroom in a labelled envelope. PLEASE DO NOT SEND LOOSE MONEY. Each room has a post box through which letters and money (providing it is in a labelled sealed envelope) can be sent to the school office. Meals are advertised on the website and there is always the salad with two wraps option. Children can self serve salad, vegetables and fruit salad and can have second portions.

* Please note; there are occasions e.g at Christmas during the show week, and on sporting tournament days when it is not possible to accommodate extra adult guests at lunchtime. The same applies for the first five school days in September when the priority is to reestablish systems for our pupils particularly our new starters.

POPPY FLIES A HAWK Ever wondered what it would be like to fly UNDER the Humber Bridge Well Poppy Adamson does as she has flown a British Aerospace Hawk under the bridge and managed not to crash. Had she crashed she wouldn’t have wiped out an £18 million plane as she was in fact one of the lucky winners of a competition to have a go at flying the plane in BAEs flight training simulator. As you can see she also got chance to sit inside the real thing, but only on the ground!

WONDERING WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR PUMPKIN? Pumpkin Pie? Cream of Pumpkin Soup? or how about entering your pumpkin for the best carved pumpkin at Flemingate on SATURDAY 28TH OCTOBER 2017 Flemingate is organising a “Pumpkin Spooktacular!” Everyone is invited to bring their carved pumpkins to enter it into a best carved pumpkin competition.   There will also be an amazing pumpkin carver giving a demonstration. He is actually a local man from Beverley  One of his works is featured on the right. I ‘m pretty sure that this standard is not expected from the competitors!.

One of our parents Mrs. Bridgeman is working for Flemingate co-ordinating their Marketing, events and social media. She has offered to take any pumpkins in if people can’t make it on the day. See the following flyers for details.

INTRODUCING WOODCROFT! More places at Sporting EventsI have been approached recently regarding children who have not been selected for some Sporting Tournaments. It is difficult sometimes to take everyone who would like to attend and sometimes there is strict criteria as to how many we take from different year groups and also a gender balance. This sometimes can mean that all the girls who volunteered can go, but not all the boys. We are looking at ways in which we can log those who attend so that we can ensure a fair distribution as well as sending those who have a passion and talent in a particular event. One of the difficulties we experienced last year, was since the reengagement of schools, which had previously left the sports partnership, the opportunity to send more than one team has been reduced. One new opportunity however is the creation of an additional “Woodcroft” Team through our relationship with Woodmansey School. They often don’t have enough children to make up a team, so we are creating an additional Woodcroft Team for events they would like to attend. This will have the advantage for us of giving more of our children the chance to participate. We also, where we are allowed, will enter 2nd and 3rd teams in events.

HELPING HAND FOR OUR SISTER SCHOOL Please vote for Woodmansey CE Primary As you are aware we are supporting Woodmansey CE Primary School until they get a new headteacher. They only have 49 pupils and when it comes to fund raising it’s a tough job. However their PTA has a chance of raising £1000 through the Aviva Project. All they need are on line votes. They achieved 999 last year and everyone is allowed to vote ten times and can use multiple email addresses i.e. work and home.  It would be a lovely gesture if we could support the families of a school which we are woking very closely with and has welcomed us so warmly into their community. The link to vote is: https://community-fund.aviva.co.uk/voting/project/view/17-4923

TONY KNIGHT CENTRE A space for learning and opportunity As you will have spotted on the South Playground, our new “Centre” has arrived and should be completed over the half term break. We are going to have a special opening ceremony on 8th November. We have invited Margaret Knight wife of the late Tony who was Chair of Governors for 18 years and worked tirelessly for our children. Margaret will unveil the plaque naming the pod the Tony Knight Centre.

The centre is to be used for group work, interventions and as a space for all the children to use as a base when doing environmental

work. We also want to use it as a base for the Friends Association for refreshments etc. We even hope to open it as a coffee shop on Friday Mornings. We are indebted to the Friends and the Beverley Catholic society for paying for this wonderful new asset.

Swift Caravans provided the S-Pod at cost price to the school; truly a local company with a community spirit.

Representing Yorkshire Badminton. Report written by Madeline Stapleton Year 6

On Saturday 7th October, Madeline Stapleton represented Yorkshire in the Leicester U12 Level Doubles Badminton Tournament.

This is a popular tournament involving pairs from counties all around England and has been previously won by England’s top female mixed doubles player, Gabby Adcock. The games were initially split into 3 groups and Madeline and her partner, Angie Zhu, were in Group A.

Having never played together before, when Madeline stepped on court with Angie, they weren’t sure if they would do well. As their first game started they were nervous, but being 10-2 up, their courage began to build. Winning 21-4 made them realise they were a good pairing. The next game they played equally as well winning 21-8. Another victory in their third match was an excellent result for them. Their fourth match was surely their hardest match in the tournament, playing the pair including the no. 1 player in the country at this age group and the top seeds in the tournament. Despite battling away, in a very competitive

match they lost 21-7 to the eventual winners of the tournament.

After a relatively easy game, the final group game for Madeline and Angie would decide whether it was them or their opponents who took second place in the group and qualify for the quarterfinals. Facing local rivals Lincolnshire and a nervous wait for what looked like a difficult match, Madeline and Angie put in a great performance to win 21-8. At the end of the group stages, Madeline and Angie were in second place in their group with a tally of 5/6 wins and they qualified for the quarterfinals, where, they faced their own Yorkshire teammates. After a great game in the quarter final, they eventually lost 21-12. Madeline and Angie played really well and Madeline made a great new friend in Angie.

“Our Badminton Club is truly a great Molescroft success story. Many of our pupils and past pupils are playing at county and national level”

Watch out Britain here’s the future heading to an Olympics somewhere in the world soon … well why not?

Inter-schools Tag Rugby Tournament

It was a bright, clear October evening as the Molescroft Ten made their way down to Beverley Rugby Club grounds to take part in a series of 7 a-side tag rugby matches against schools from across the Beverley area.

The team played well; years of experience at our tag festivals had prepared the boys and girls for the games. Fantastic, confident play from our team and there was a great deal of enthusiasm from all involved. Unfortunately, some of this ebullience denied us of precious tries; as at the beginning many of the boys forgot the (strictly observed) no diving rule. Poor Miles Renshaw was stung particularly badly as he scored two of our opening tries only to have them disallowed because he had thrown himself gamely across the line. After this the screams of "don't dive!" resounded around the Molescroft pitch.

A tricky opening match meant we lost against eventual victors Minster (4-1) but the rest of the games proved how well Molescroft can play:

Molescroft/Leconfield 2-0

Molescroft/St John's 3-0

Molescroft/St Nick's 4-2

Molescroft/Tickton 3-1

Molescroft/St Mary's 3-0

Molescroft/Walkington 3-3

Molescroft/Swinemoor 3-0

The whole squad played great. Raghav Mittal took a prominent lead and was a vocal and lively presence of the pitch. Miles Renshaw and Reuben Rowley were very nippy and looked for opportunities. Matthew Lazenby was enthusiastic and confident, mucking in with relish; but an especially strong performance was put in by Henry Vickerman. He played a series of speedy and intelligent games for the home team; helping us to victory in many of the matches. Not to be forgotten were our girls. A little bit of "panic passing" quickly passed by as they settled into the game. Evie Gresswell, Alice Clark and Millie Frank were all brave and determined in their play and the two Poppies (Adamson and Baker) grew in confidence as the matches progressed.

“Minster won the annual tag rugby tournament for the third time running this year...but by a narrowing margin!”

Molescroft are heading up the Rugby Rankings.
