How I choose to respond to God’s action does not determine my salvation, but the extent to which I have accepted God’s love toward me. Period. It seems too simple, doesn’t it? I think that was Luther’s difficulty as well. He wanted to know that he had accomplished something, that he had worked in order to garner God’s attention. Righteousness through Faith –  whose righteousness and whose faith?

“…now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is at- tested by the law and the prophets, the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus

Christ for all who believe.”  Paul’s letter to the Church at Rome, 3.21 -22

It’s a question that has been battled for centuries: About whose righteousness does

Paul speak? Is it my own “getting right with God” that draws me closer to salvation,or is it an “alien righteousness” outside of me (specifically, from God), that makesme “right with God”?

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther, Augustinian monk that he was, struggled with always doing the rightthing, so that at the great Day of Judgment he would be judged on God’s side. Not until his impris-onment in the tower at Wartburg Castle did he have a breakthrough. In an event called affection-ately, the “tower experience”, as Luther translated the bible into German, he encountered in a newway the above quoted words from Paul’s letter to the Romans. In a moment of clarity, he realizedthat God’s righteousness and not his own mattered in the arena of salvation. Luther suffered from aMedieval piety that pushed him to see himself as worthless as “maggot fodder” and utterly incapa-

ble of attaining God’s righteousness. When he realized that God’s righteousness made him fit for God’s righteousness, a great burdenlifted from his heart – he understood for the first time Reformation grace. Now all that remainedwas faithfulness.

In the centuries since Luther, debates have waged over the subject of this faith – is it my faith inGod that saves me, or is it God’s faithfulness to humanity that saves? In Paul’s words, both mean-ings can be understood. What if Paul’s intent is that the Romans, and we know that salvation iscompletely God’s act? What if my act of faithfulness is nothing more than a faith-filled, trusting re-sponse to a righteous and faithful God who has chosen me simply out of love?

I choose to believe that the Reformation breakthrough is just that – God’s act in love toward hu-manity. Period. How I choose to respond to God’s action does not determine my salvation, but theextent to which I have accepted God’s love toward me. Period. It seems too simple, doesn’t it? Ithink that was Luther’s difficulty as well. He wanted to know that he had accomplished something, that he had worked in order to garner God’s attention. DEACON SUPPORT TEAM

All members should be aware of their deacon and hopefully have met him or her to discuss any concerns or questions you may have had. Your deacons have a sincere interest in serving your needand encourage you to bring your needs to the attention of Pastor, the deacon group or council whichever is appropriate. In turn, we trust you have an equally sincere interest in getting to know your deacon as a present and future friend and confidant. We also want to emphasize the importance ospeaking with Pastor whenever the need arises. He wants to know your concerns to help provide solution or answers to your questions. He remains the best resource within our congregation to shar

wisdom and knowledge.Deacons are not exempt from having a deacon of their own. At times we need someone willing to listen and we turn to our deacon. In our bi-monthly meetings, the nine deacons discuss a variety of topics concerning the spiritual welfare of the congregation. Most importantly we are available for yowhen your needs might require someone to talk with other than Pastor Tim.  We are grateful for the opportunity to serve the members of Zion’s Lutheran Church and we encourageyou to reach out to your deacon whenever the need arises. Please call the church office for any assistance.

Human Trafficking: How To Help Locally

Modern day slavery is on the rise in our nation and Ohio is one of the most  prevalent stateswhen it comes to incidents of human trafficking.  We see thousands of men, women, and childrenbeing forced into slavery through the labor  and sex industries. In an effort to battle this right herein northwest Ohio, the Human Trafficking Protection Project was developed within Legal Aid ofWestern Ohio, Inc. The project works to provide legal assistance, as well as  collaboration to meetthe physical and emotional needs of victims. This effort requires participation from many people inthe area to offer a

 holistic

 path to

 recovery.

 We need your help

to meet these survivor needs. Our

most pressing need at this time is in the form of $25 gift cards. Both grocery/super -center and gascards are needed as we help these survivors with basic essentials, transportation and housing. Ifyou would like to help, gift cards can be dropped off at the LAWO office at   118 Clinton Street,Suite 101 Defiance, OH 43512 . There is a mail slot in the front door  for after  hours donations. Please place in an envelope with attention to “HTPP.”  If you need to arrange an alternate dona-tion drop or have any questions, please email Kelly King at [email protected]

Library news…

Right now most of the books in the library have been donated. Here are a few that might be of in-terest:

“Laugh Your Way to Grace” by Rev. Susan Sparks. Rev. Sparks is an ex-lawyer turned comedi-an and Baptist minister. This is a book about how humor and laughter have everything to do withGod. Laughter can help you: find perspective when faced with adversity, heal-emotionally, physi-cally and spiritually, keep your faith when God is silent, live with elegance, beauty and generosityof spirit.

“Snake Oil”  by Rev. Becca Stevens. Rev. Stevens is an Episcopal priest at Vanderbilt University. She is also the founder of Thistle Farms and Magdalene. These two social enterprises work handin hand serving women who have survived prostitution, trafficking, and addiction. Rev Stevenscalls herself a “snake oil seller”. She infuses natural oils with powerful stories and believes theyhelp heal the world.

“Mighty Be Our Powers”  by Leymah Gbowee. In a time of death and terror, Leymah Gboweebrought Liberia’s women together—and together, they led a nation to peace. This is a grippingchronicle of a journey from hopelessness to empowerment that will touch all who dream of a betterworld. Ms. Gbowee is also a noble peace prize winner.

“Wounded  Trapped and Voiceless”  by Emily Greta. Imagine being trapped in your own body! This is a true story of Phyllis Klenk and her battle to prove she is alive. Unable to move or com-municate this book draws you into her incredible journey from walking with God to a triumphantemergence from coma to life.

We also have several books of fiction by authors such as: Janet Hitchcock, Wanda Brunstettler,

Dale Cramer, Beverly Lewis, Janette Oke, and Tracie Peterson to name a few.

We would like to enhance the library with some new releases. What type of books are you inter-ested in reading? We welcome your input (you can leave the information in the church office).
