We welcomed a number of new faces: Dr Ramon Landin-Romero (postdoctoral fellow), Cynthia Murray and Vanessa Zeleny (Research Assistants), Emma McCormack (Research Coordinator), Rosi Hutchings and Sherry Chen (PhD students), Austin Lee, Nadine Eyre and Alice Zhen (undergraduate students) joined us in 2015. We said goodbye this year to Claire O’Callaghan and Leone Chare, who successfully completed their PhDs, and to research assistants Emma Flanagan and Lucie Barhon. International visitors this year included Prof Akira Midorikawa (Chuo University, Japan), Dr Tim Van Langenhove (Antwerp University, Belgium), Dr Phillip Fletcher (UCL, UK), Dr Sharon Savage (University of Exeter, UK), Prof Masud Husain (Oxford, UK), Dr Jonathan Rohrer (UCL, UK), Dr Eneida Mioshi (Cambridge, UK), Prof Roy Kessels (Donders University, Holland) and students from Holland and Italy. Congratulations! Awards: John Hodges received the prestigious Bengt Winblad Lifetime Achievement Award in Alzheimer’s Disease Research for his work in cognition in neuro-degenerative conditions. Muireann Irish received the L’Oreal-UNESCO Australia and New Zealand For Women in Science fellowship. This prestigious fellowship is awarded to women who have shown scientific excellence. Olivier Piguet was awarded Doctorate Honoris Causa from Favaloro University, Argentina, for his work in clinical neuroscience. Fiona Kumfor won the 2015 Paxinos Prize for best scientific paper by a postdoctoral researcher at NeuRA. Rebekah Ahmed and Claire O’Callaghan received the Dean’s List award from UNSW Medicine. Emma Devenney was awarded the Tow Prize at the Prince of Wales Hospital Campus Conference, and Sicong Tu received the Student Research Award at the International Neuropsychological Conference in Sydney. Funding: John Hodges and Olivier Piguet are co-investigators on a successful 5-year Dementia Research Team Grant funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) worth $6,5 M. Olivier Piguet was awarded a prestigious 5-year NHMRC Senior Research Fellowship. Fiona Kumfor and Cristian Leyton each received a 4-year NHMRC-ARC Dementia Research Development Fellowships. FRONTIERwelcomed81newparticipantsinourresearchthisyear,andwelcomedbackmanyfamiliesforreviewvisits.Ourresearchonfrontotemporaldementiaandrelateddisorderscontinues.Somerecentresearchprojectsandfindingsaredescribedbelow.

DrJamesBurrellisinvestigatinglanguagedeficitsinmotorneuronediseaseandisstudyinghowclinicalsymptomsarerelatedtobrainpathology.Heisalsoinvestigatinghowvision,visualmemory,andvisuospatialfunctioncanimprovethediagnosisofunusualdementiapresentations.

DrMuireannIrishcontinuestoexplorehowmemoryandsocialcognitionareaffectedindementia.Herresearchhasuncoveredthebrainregionsassociatedwithprospectivememory(orthinkingaboutthefuture)deficitsinfrontotemporaldementia.Theseresultsopenthedoortointerventionstostructurethedailylifeofaffectedindividuals.

DrFionaKumforcontinuestoinvestigatesocialskillsindementia.Recently,sheshowedthatsomepeoplewithfrontotemporaldementiahavedifficultyrecognisingfaces.Fionaisalsoinvestigatinghowdifferentsymptomsemergeoverthediseasecourse.Thisresearchwillhelpusunderstandthetypesofsupportpatientsandfamiliesneedovertime.

DrCristianLeytoncontinueshisresearchonlanguagedeficitsinAlzheimer’sdisease.HeshowedthatAlzheimer’sdiseaseresultinvariablelanguagechanges,whichareexplainedbythelocationofbrainatrophy.Intheupcomingyear,hewillinvestigatehowpathologyprogressesandhowitaffectspatients’languageperformancewithdiseaseprogression.

DrRamonLandin-Romerowaspreviouslyinvestigatingstructuralandfunctionalbrainchangesinpsychiatricconditions.SincejoiningFRONTIER,hehasappliedhisskillstounderstandingthebrainchangesinAlzheimer'sdiseaseandfrontotemporaldementiaovertime.

DrRebekahAhmedisinvestigatingtheeatingandmetabolicabnormalitiesindementiaandmotorneurondisease.Eatingchanges(bingeeating,sweetpreferences)arecommoninthebehaviouralvariantoffrontotemporaldementia.Thesepatientsalsoshowelevatedcholesterolandinsulinlevels,whichmayaffecttheirhealthanddiseaseprogression.

DrTimVanLangenhoveisstudyingbehaviourchangesinthelanguagepresentationsofdementia.Heshowedthatsuchchangesbecomemorecommonwithdiseaseprogression,particularlyinsemanticdementia.Apathyandlossofempathyarealsofoundinasubsetofpatientswhohaveanon-fluentlanguagedisturbance.

RosiHutchingsisinvestigatingfaceperceptioninFTD.Byunderstandinghowweprocessinformationsuchasidentityandemotionfromtheface,thisresearchwillclarifysomeoftheprocessesunderlyingsocialcognitioninfrontotemporaldementia.

StephanieWonghasbeenexploringlearningandmemoryprocessesindementiaandwhetherself-orsocially-relevantinformationisremembereddifferentlytootherinformation.Thesefindingswillhelpunderstandwhethercertaintypesofmemoriesaremoreresistant,andhowthiscanbenefitmanagementstrategiesindementia.

LaurenBartleymanagesthebloodandDNAsamplescollectedatFRONTIER,andourbraindonorprogram.Ourhopeisthattheanalysisoftheproteinswithinthebloodwillrevealtheunderlyingcausesofaperson’sillness.Ifsuccessful,thesewillbecomevaluablediagnostictoolstohelpclinicianswiththemanagementofthesedisorders.

OtherActivities

Wehavecommencedtheopen-labelextensiontotheinternationalPhaseIIIdrugtrial,TauRx,forbehavioural-variantFTD.Recruitedparticipantshaveregularvisitsandtestingwithusforanother12months.In2016,wehopetoseeresultsforthefirsttrialwecommencedlastyear.ThisresearchisanimportantsteptowardsthedevelopmentoftreatmentsinthefightagainstFTD.

ThisyearwerecognisedWorldFTDAwarenessweek(Oct5-9),hostinganumberofeventsandpromotingawarenessthroughsocialmedia.TheMosmanGalleryinSydneysupportedusinhostinganafternoonteaforindividualswithFTDandtheirfamilies,withanopportunitytoviewtheexhibition‘AnUnendingShadow’byAnnandSophieCape.TheCapeshavebeeninvolvedinourresearchprogram.Wealsoorganisedascreeningofthedocumentary‘LooksLikeLaury’followedbyaQ&Asession,whichwasopentothepublic.

OurannualfrontotemporaldementiaInformationandSupportDayforFamilieswillreturntoitsusualformatin2016.WeplantoholdthisdayinJune,hereatNeuRA,sostaytunedformoredetails.

ConferencePresentationsandPublications

Ourresearchfindingshavebeenpresentedatmanyscientificconferences,includingtheWorldCongressofNeurology(Santiago,Chile),theInternationalNeuropsychologicalSocietyConference(Sydney),andtheAsiaPacificFTD-MNDMeeting(Sydney),whichwehelpedorganise.

FRONTIERwasagainveryprolificin2015.Wehavepublishedover30peer-reviewedarticlesininternationalscientificjournals,includinginprestigiousjournalssuchasTheLancet,Brain,Neurology,andJAMANeurology,aswellasanumberofbookchapters.
