Mark your calendars, New Hope: the 2014 International Food Festival is March 8! !With such diversity in our congregation, the festival is a great opportunity for members to showcase their country’s cuisine and show their national pride — and for attendees to sample a variety of foods from all over the globe while raising money for a good cause. Sharing Our Strength International, our global missions arm, hosts the festival as a fundraiser for mission projects. This year, the goal is to raise $7,500, which would allow us to provide 25 additional scholarships for children to attend New Hope Mahotas Adventist School in Mozambique — the school we helped build and continue to support. This would bring the church’s sponsorship to 100 students. !Sponsorship for the entire year costs $300 per student, which includes a uniform, books and daily hot lunch. The sad reality is that most families in Mozambique cannot afford $300; the average yearly income is only about $500, and families tend to be large. Parents often have to make the hard choice of which children go to school or

stay home to haul water or work for their family. !The New Hope Mahotas Adventist School was built in 2008, when a group of 40 members and friends of New Hope ventured out for the church’s first international mission trip to Mozambique. In addition to building the school, the team also ran medical clinics in outlying villages, drilled five water wells and conducted a vacation bible school program that drew more than 500 kids at its peak. Some of those kids now

attend the school. !The Caribbean nations won the 2012 food festival, quite possibly on the merits of their jerk chicken alone! Who will be

crowned the next winner? Is this America’s year? !

You will have the opportunity to taste and decide who will take the title March 8! Admission prices to the all-you-can-eat festival are $10 for adults and $5 for kids (ages 6-16). There will be additional opportunities to contribute to the fundraising goal in other ways throughout the night, so bring your wallet and don’t miss out on the food, fun and fellowship. !To get involved, see Caryn Wooster in the lobby today or email her at [email protected]

The old woman slowly walked down the supermarket aisle. Her mouth was formed into a deep frown, her eyes were small and hard. Her gnarled arthritic hands gripped the handle of a cart, using it to keep her balance. Her feet, stuffed into large orthopedic shoes, shuffled along the tiled floor in unsteady, measured steps. A nurse aide was by her side, carrying the woman’s cane and purse.

“I want that soup,” said the woman in a sharp, biting tone. The aide reached for the can and put it into the shopping cart. “No,” snapped the old woman, “You got the wrong one, you stupid girl.” With a gentle smile on her face, the aide returned the item to the self and reached for the correct one.

Moments later, the woman rammed her cart into a floor display, knocking it completely on its side. Packages of Knorr Bouillon scattered all over the aisle. She shrieked instructions at the aide to clean up the mess and got even angrier when the younger woman propped the cane against a shelf to pick up the packages.

I rushed over to help. We righted the display and began refilling it. While we were working, the old woman continually screamed directions at us, pointing out our incompetency, laziness and lack of organizational skills. I was mad at the

undeserved treatment but remained silent. However, my face and actions displayed the anger I was feeling inside.

I looked up at the aide, hoping to find support for my anger. Instead, I saw her face was gentle and soft. Her half smile seemed genuine and forgiving. She did not seem frazzled or distressed by the old woman’s treatment. She seemed to accept this mean old woman for who she was. The aide’s assuring words were soft and kind as she put her hand on the woman’s arm and led her away to another aisle.

It is hard to love and accept someone who treats us wrongly; someone whose actions seem spiteful. In the same respect, one of the hardest things for us to grasp is the love and acceptance Jesus has for us — no matter what we have done. We can experience tremendous freedom when we are able to see ourselves and others through God’s loving eyes — when we recognize that Jesus loves and accepts us, no matter what. This freedom then leads us to love others unconditionally — no matter what they have done to us.
