When I shop at My Organic Market (MOM), an employee always carries my bags out to the car. It does not matter how many bags I have, how far away I am parked, what the weather’s like or whether the employee is a stock clerk or general manager; someone will always insist on carrying my bags. !One day, I asked an employee about this policy. “It’s not policy,” she said. “We just like to do this to thank our customers for shopping with us.” I replied, “What a wonderful culture you have.” She smiled and said, “We just want to serve you. It’s who we are.” This young lady was telling me that being part of MOM means having a heart of service. Everyone serves.!

As the body of Christ, we are called to serve one another in practical ways with the gifts God has

given us. As we do, the body grows and becomes stronger. !

“All of you together are Christ's body, and each one of you is a separate and necessary part of it” (1 Cor. 12:27). Service is essential to the growth and health of the body of Christ — the church. But the reality is that so few members of the body serve. !If one part of our bodies, such as the lungs, doesn’t function, the entire body suffers. If our lungs are independent from the rest of our body, we will die. So too with the body of Christ. If one part doesn’t function, the entirety suffers. Perhaps this is why many Christian churches do not grow and eventually die: Not everyone is serving — or willing to serve. !

Yet we are called — even commanded — to serve (Galatians 5:13)! And Paul commands it because he knows how essential your service is, and that the

body will suffer and die if each of us does not do his or her part. The body of Christ needs you! !

“God has given each of you a gift from His great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though

God himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring

glory to God through Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 4:10-11). !

By Pastor Ann Roda

Last week, I was standing in line at Staples when an elderly gentleman came into the store. He was hunched over and pushing a walker. He took a few steps inside and then stopped, looking from one end of the store to another. He did not move but just kept looking around the store. The Staples staff, wearing bright red shirts with buttons that said, “That was easy,” walked past him. But none of them stopped to ask if he needed help.

When it was my turn at the checkout counter, I asked the cashier to notify someone to help the man. She looked at me with a blank look and said, “If he needs help, he can go to customer service. They can help him there.” Noticing that there was no Customer Service sign visible, I asked, “Where is customer service?” The cashier sighed and pointed to the Copy & Print Center and said in an impatient tone, “Are you ready to check out?” I smiled a tense smile, put my items on the counter, turned around and walked toward the elderly man who still had not moved. The cashier called after me, “Hey, so what do you want me to do with your things?”

I was angry and heartbroken at the same time. The cashier did not see the elderly man at all — seemingly blind to his condition and his need. She only saw her task; she failed to see the human being.

For the next 10 minutes, I walked around the store with the elderly man, reading the labels and grabbing things off the shelf for

him. He was very funny and told stories of the office supplies from the 1930s. At the checkout counter, the same cashier handed him his purchases in a large, bulky bag. When he could not figure out how to hold the bag and his walker at the same time, the cashier put the bag at the end of the counter, looked at the next person in line and said, “Next.”

I tell this story not to highlight what I did but to point out how easy it is for us to be blind to human need. I too was initially blind with busyness. I wanted Staples to get someone to help the man. I was in a hurry with lots of things to do. Our days are busy and our to-do lists are long. Sometimes our tasks consume us so that we fail to see another human being. And when that happens, we miss out on what it means to live. For it is the person, the human being, who often gives meaning and value to our tasks.

“He (Jesus) will answer them, ‘I’m telling the solemn truth: Whenever you failed to do one of these things to someone who was being overlooked or ignored, that was me — you failed to do it to me’” (Matthew 25:45, The Message).

Where do you see Jesus?
