Volunteer for Highland Day! Highland Day is around the corner, and we're still seeking volunteers to support New Hope's activities at this annual family festival here in Howard County. !The Oct. 4 event draws an estimated 3,000 people and takes place just a mile from the church, at the intersection of routes 216 and 108. It serves to celebrate the Highland, Md., community. The festivities will include a parade and hayride, among other attractions. There's also plenty of activity for kids, who can enjoy games, face painting (one of our contributions!) and a visit from the fire department.!New Hope is one of dozens of exhibitors participating in the day, joining local businesses, artists and community groups. In addition to face painting, we are in charge of family crafts this year and will offer free health screenings, raffles, a prayer and reflection area and water (or hot drinks if it's cold).!Our involvement presents a unique opportunity to introduce the community to our church, letting people know we are in the neighborhood — and that they are welcome anytime. !Help us make the day a success by volunteering for the event! We need helping hands for before, during and after the festival: !Setup: 7:30-10 a.m.Activities: 10 a.m.-4 p.m (crafts, raffle and drinks area, face painting, prayer area)Tear down and cleanup: 4-6 p.m.!Sign up to volunteer TODAY by contacting Laura Krause, New Hope's outreach committee chair, at [email protected] or 607-425-7743.Learn more about Highland Day at www.highlandmd.org/Highland_Day/Highland_Day.html.

Help Pack Meals for Haiti Can you give 90 minutes of your time to help feed 20,000 people? !

Every six seconds, a child dies from hunger-related causes. More than 16,000 children die every day from lack of food and nutrition. And every year, more than 5,000,000 kids age 5 or younger die from starvation. !No Child Hungry — a program of My Neighbor's Children, an organization committed to helping people in need — aims to change these bleak statistics

through events that involve packing specially designed meals that contain the nutrition a child needs daily (21 minerals and vitamins, along with soy protein

and rice). !New Hope is joining the cause by hosting a meal-packing event for Haiti, which holds a special place in our hearts. The meals each cost 30 cents, but all you have to give is your time! !Help us make a difference! Join us Saturday, Oct. 11, at New Hope during one of the three shifts: 9:30 to 11 a.m., 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or 12:30 to 2 p.m.!For more details, email [email protected], or visit www.myneighborschildren.org

A few years ago, on a flight to the West Coast, I shared a row with an elderly couple traveling to a family reunion. The man seemed anxious from the moment he got on the airplane. Throughout the flight, he would take deep breaths, pursing his lips as he slowly exhaled. His wife would sometimes give his hand a gentle squeeze and say, “Henry, it is going to be alright.” Whenever she reassured him, I would give them a knowing smile because I too get anxious every time I fly.

When the man excused himself to use the bathroom, I turned to the woman and said, “I can’t help but notice how anxious your husband is. Has he not flown much?” She turned to me and said, “Oh, my dear, it’s not the flying that has him all uptight. He’s going to meet his brother. They have been estranged for more than 40 years. He is very nervous.”

As I tried to suppress my surprise, she put her hand on mine and whispered, “It’s so sad — two brothers fighting for all these many years.” Tears filled her eyes as she described the years of pain and regret that her husband went through because of this family dispute. Both brothers were now in their mid-80s. One was dying of cancer. Three weeks ago, he called and asked to reconcile. They had not spoken since 1969.

Cain and Abel were brothers with different skills and interests. Abel tended the animals while Cain tilled the earth. Cain was the first human being born on the earth. Abel was the first human to die, murdered by his own brother. When God preferred Abel’s sacrifice, Cain was angry. God knew Cain was at a dangerous junction. In Genesis 4:7, God’s message to

Cain was a loving warning: Be careful what you do; sin can get the best of you.

Unfortunately, Cain’s jealousy got the best of him. The evil started by Adam and Eve continued. Cain proceeded with his planned deception and murdered his brother.

God could have punished Cain with death, but He spared his life. As with Adam and Eve, God was merciful even though Cain didn’t deserve it.

Jealousy and sin ripped apart Adam and Eve's family. Yet this was the family through whom God worked to populate the earth. God must have known from the beginning what a sinful bunch these people would be, yet he loved them just the same. And that’s a very comforting message for us today.

God has taught us about love through Jesus’ life. He has taught us how to love through our own families. It’s not always easy to get along with those we love the most. May God give us the enabling power to love family members the way Jesus loves us: mercifully and unconditionally.

“Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves” (Romans 12:10).
