A Season of Thanks: Messages From Our Pastors

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

New Hope Happenings /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

It’s easy to say thanks for the way our church has responded over the past few weeks with the hundreds of bags of groceries, the 140+ turkeys, the 140+ Christmas shoe boxes and the 40,000+ meals that were assembled. Yet I don’t want to not say thanks to the large number of you who week in and week out give of your time, your abilities, your

money, your love to make New Hope special. Those of you make New Hope a place to not just feel but be connected, welcomed, accepted and appreciated. For that I give thanks this year. — Pastor Mike Speegle

"The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning" (Lamentations 3:22-23).

This verse is a reminder that every morning is a day of thanksgiving for what God does for us. During this Thanksgiving Day, may your heart explode with gratitude

as you experience His tender mercies. — Pastor Ann Roda

New Hope! This Thanksgiving season (my favorite holiday) has found me extremely thankful! I’m thankful for my incredible wife and two sons who were willing to share this adventure. I’m thankful for this amazing church family and for welcoming us with open arms. I’m thankful for the dedicated volunteers of this church who give so selflessly, week after

week. And lastly, I’m thankful for God’s faithfulness and promises to each every one of us. He’s doing something right now, and we’re invited to be a part of it! Incredible!

— Pastor Jason Decena

When we thank God for what He will do for us in the future, we have hope in the present. — Pastor Dave Gemmell

Here are a few words of thanks — with a dash of inspiration — from each of New Hope's pastors for this holiday season.

Immediately after the Boston Red Sox won the World Series, I received a text message from a friend who is an ardent Boston fan. His message, in capital letters, simply stated, “WE WON!!” On Twitter, other Red Sox fans voiced their jubilation by writing, “We’re #1” and “We did it.” The following day, most of the major news organizations featured Boston fans, frenzied from the joy of victory, screaming, “We’re the champs!”

The irony here is that not one fan directly contributed to the Red Sox winning the pennant. Yes, fans cheer and support the team. They buy tickets and wear team T-shirts and caps. But the fans did not swing a bat or catch a fly ball. They did not hit a doubleheader or steal one base. Most fans never meet the players personally. Yet every fan will happily take ownership of a team’s success and unabashedly proclaim, “WE won!”

In a recent article in Psychology Today, Ed Hirt, a professor of psychological studies at Indiana University, explains that when a fan is so focused and obsessed on a game, it triggers certain neurons in his brain. The fan vicariously becomes the athlete. “The die-hard fan experiences the same hormonal surges as the athlete. He feels like he is the one hitting a home run,” Hirt says. That is why the team’s success becomes the fan’s success. The fan is unable to differentiate himself from the team; thus it becomes “we.”

In the Bible, we are reminded that “victory comes from the Lord” (Psalm 3:8). In John 16:33, Jesus reminds us, “In this world you

will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” In Deuteronomy 20:4, we are told that it is “God who goes with us to fight against our enemies to give us victory.”

When Jesus died on the cross, He claimed victory over sin. When we believe in Jesus Christ, we can experience that victory in our lives. Do you claim that victory? Do you take ownership of Jesus’ success and victory and unabashedly proclaim, “We won?” Most of us usually do not make that kind of claim. Why not? Because, for many of us, we feel that we need to do something, our part, to claim that victory. But that is not how God works.

God stands and fights for us and gives us the victory. God died for us and gives us the victory. God wants us to take owner-ship of His victory. Because He loves you like crazy, He would have it no other way.

What is stopping you from claiming that which has already been won?
