Questions About God? a starting point for answers

Why do bad things happen to good people? What exactly is

baptism all about? What does it

mean to have a personal relationship with Jesus?

Explore these questions and more in Starting Point, a 10-week small group class that begins its spring session next month. The class serves to answer questions like these, and any others that participants have, during weekly classes that cover subjects from creation through eternity. The group is driven by conversation — not lectures or sermons — and aims to offer a place for anyone with questions about God, Jesus, the Bible or Christianity to seek answers.

The weekly meetings, which will take place Sabbaths at 10:30 a.m., are meant to give people “a safe place to ask questions and to not have the answer to everything — to learn more

about this Jesus guy,” said Season Cromwell, New Hope’s evangelism director, who leads the small group.

The class is geared toward people who are simply curious about God, starting a new relationship with Jesus or just getting back into church. New Hope offers it regularly in the fall and spring.

Registration for the spring session of Starting Point, which begins Feb. 15, is now open. For details, visit www.lookingforachurch.org/startingpoint. Space is limited, so tell your friends — or sign yourself up — today!

Not yet a New Hope member? Entrance to New Hope is the launching pad to your New Hope Adventure! !The Back Page follows the Bible lessons that children and youth are studying and serves to help kids and adults continue the spiritual discussion at home and establish patterns of a devotional life.

I am part of a very large and close family. We have lots of family traditions, which we hold very dear. One such tradition is to have family worship together, singing hymn after hymn. We marvel at how our parents can sing dozens of hymns, all the verses, all by memory. Another tradition is to hear the family stories. This is done at every family gathering. No matter how many times we have heard them repeated, they are told again and again.

We have the “elders” all sit together, and the younger generations sit in front of them. Then with video cameras rolling, someone asks, “Tell us how the family survived the war,” and immediately, the stories begin to flow. These are stories of how our great-grandparents met; how our grandparents survived World War II; how our fathers climbed coconut trees and made fishing rods out of bamboo; how our mothers learned to be responsible at a young age; and how God was the central part of our family. As the stories are told, we sketch out the family tree, drawing out all the branches so the younger generations will know who is who, and who they are in relation to those in the stories.

This storytelling tradition is so important for us because we know that if the stories are not told, they will be forgotten. And when they are forgotten, a part of our family is lost — a part of our identity vanishes.  So,

with great effort and care, we record the stories and make sure they are told, over and over again.

This is why Jesus came into the world. To tell us about God; to show us God’s unconditional and everlasting love; to help us understand, see, feel and experience God in personal and meaningful ways. When we read and hear the story of Jesus over and over again, we will see and know God more and more. But when the stories are not read or heard, it will be easy to forget the “family history.”  For the coming generations, part of their roots and their identity will be lost. They will not know their Father.

“Before anything else existed, there was Christ, with God. He has always been alive and is himself God….And Christ became a human being and lived here on earth among us and was full of loving forgiveness and truth. And some of us have seen his glory — the glory of the only Son of the heavenly Father! John pointed him out to the people, telling the crowds, “This is the one I was talking about….” (John 1:1, 14-15, The Living Bible).

What story are you telling?
