W ith our busy schedules it’s often di� cult in my household to come up with

unique ideas for supper. Most of the time it’s easier just cooking plain, old dishes than getting creative and buying ingredients that will only be used once. So when I got the opportunity to try out UCook I suddenly found a solution to all my problems.

This dinner-kit delivery service aims to make busy lives easier by at least having dinner kind of sorted for you. Run by David Torr and Christopher Verster-Cohen, alongside Katie Barry and angel investor Klaudia Veixelbaumer, UCook

has been quickly gaining popularity in Cape Town. The idea came

about while David was living on takeaways in London and came

across HelloFresh, a company that delivers fresh ingredients

to your doorstep along with recipes – something that caught on quickly overseas. Not only was he saving money, but he was eating healthier. When he returned to South Africa he saw a gap in the market for a similar service.

It’s been a year since UCook launched and so far these

20-somethings have been reinventing the Cape Town

food scene. UCook looks at global food trends to plan inventive

and easy-to-make recipes. It then shops for ingredients, measures out the exact amount needed – ensuring that nothing is wasted – and then delivers to your home or work.

I tried out the mielie linguine with scallions and goat’s cheese, and oyster

beef with summer greens. Both were super easy to make, yet extremely tasty and something I wouldn’t have thought of doing myself. I can’t wait to try out something slightly more adventurous like a risotto, soup or curry.

UCook works as a subscription service where you can choose your three meals weekly from its online menu from categories like Rustic, Vegetarian and L-Carb. With the Flexi Package you can try out just about anything, so whatever your preference, you are covered.

Why three meals? Well, it’s simple: it’s so you can go out to friends’ or out for dinner without feeling the pressure of wasting food. And with the world wasting one-third of all food produced, it’s something we should all be mindful of.

New owners are rejuvenating one of the oldest Stellenbosch wine estates

W ith a history stretching back to 1696, Vergenoegd is one of the most venerable estates in

the Stellenbosch winelands, but don’t be surprised if you haven’t heard much of it lately. Since 1820, over six generations, the farm has been in the hands of the Faure family, and in recent years it has been looking a little tired. Now, new owners are pouring investment into the property with a rejuvenated manor house and a host of good reasons to visit.

Many of those reasons are thanks to talented chef, Ryan Shell. Formerly of Franschhoek’s Haute Cabriere, Ryan has revamped the food offering on the estate. Gourmet picnics see baskets piled high with artisanal breads, delicious salads, cold meats, charcuterie and cheeses, while the Vergenoegd Harvest Experience is on offer until the end of this month. The experience begins with the winemaker leading a tour of the cellar, before a three-course lunch of hearty country fare served alfresco beneath the oak trees.

Gourmet picnics and harvest tables aren’t unique in the winelands, but the Vergenoegd blending experiences certainly are. Olive oil-, tea-, coffee- and wine-blending workshops are all

on offer in the charming manor house, with enthusiastic staff leading guests through the fine art of tasting, analysing and blending. Guests also get to take home a sample of their final blend.

The wine blending, held in the grand dining room of the manor house, is perhaps the highlight – unless you’re a child, or young at heart, that is, in which case the twice-daily duck parade is a fine reason to visit.

Vergenoegd’s 700-strong flock of Indian Runner ducks keep the vineyards free of snails and pests, but their daily commute to and from the vineyards has become a highlight for many visitors to the estate. The ducks don’t stick around for long, waddling by at high speed, but kids and parents can also book a brief duck tour taking in the incubators and duck pens.

The flocks of ducks are immortalised on the label of Vergenoegd’s entry-level red and white wines, and, if nothing else, the farm is worth a visit for the relaxed wine tasting enjoyed under the oaks or in the historic manor house. With a focus on rich, robust red wines, the wines here have a lineage as long and proud as the estate itself.

Head up the West Coast for laid-back markets bursting with flavour

The West Coast has its own flavour in artisanal foods, craft beers and crafts. The

best place to discover lekker local tastes is at its markets, starting from the fringes of Cape Town in Big Bay and then heading up the coast.

The last Wednesday evening of each month has become an informal supper club for locals at the I Love Big Bay market. Because the market happens during the week some of the coolest food trucks, like Scandalous, Mon Ami, Wahine, FrozenYo, and others, are able to fit it into their busy schedule. Inside the open courtyard of the life-saving club there are many more food offerings and a bar, so walk around, read menus and decide what to eat. You can then grab a table, chill with friends, shop for crafts or stroll out along the beach promenade and watch the sunset. Catch the next market on Wednesday, 30 March.

Groote Post market is well worth the 40-minute drive up the West Coast for a leisurely family day out on the last Sunday of the month. The next market will happen on 27 March. The historic wine farm is a welcoming setting with carefully curated stalls of gorgeous local treats spread out beside the wine

cellars, and enough straw bales and cushions in convivial groups under the shade of majestic old trees for everyone to claim a picnic spot. You can try beautiful home-baked pies, healthy wraps, luscious burgers, mushroom kebabs, artisanal ice lollies and much more. Darling Brew beer, craft cider, and Groote Post wine by the glass can be added to make up a relaxing Sunday lunch. There is also jewellery, clothing, ceramics, toys and loads more speciality foods to try (think pomegranate juice, Eureka Mills breads, cheeses, handmade toffees) while kids run loose and enjoy tractor rides and face-painting.

Camphill market on the first Sunday of the month is a year-round event. The atmosphere at this working farm village for intellectually disabled residents is welcoming and relaxed. The bacon and egg rolls and decadent home-baked cakes are a long-standing tradition. Fill baskets with Camphill’s organic dairy, baked goods and cosmetic products, along with food and craft products from outside stallholders, second-hand book bargains, and charity shop finds.

There are also tractor rides, farm animals and rustic jungle gyms to keep the kids entertained. Be sure not to miss the next market on Sunday, 3 April.

M ass personalisation is a big trend across the board at the moment. Designers are

looking at many ways of providing the items that people want, but giving them just enough of a personal touch to make them unique. This approach fills the gap between mass-production and bespoke craft, and appeals to the desire for individuality that people are increasingly showing.

When it comes to homeware, this approach to production can be even more compelling for people, because it allows for individual style and functional benefits. The kit-of-parts approach to products gives people the ability to fit a product to their space requirements, usually taking the form of modular items that can be configured however the user wants.

This approach is being seen in international design and in offerings from local companies. The Grid sofa by French brand Pool, for example, is made up of separate pieces, allowing the owner to create a look unique to them. Locally we’re seeing the same thinking in items such as the

As technology allows for more nuanced production methods, we’ll see this kind of personalised approach become increasingly common in the future. There is a constant tension in people’s lives between being an individual and being part of a community (having the same stuff as everyone else), and this approach to design helps people to navigate it.

Bonga Jwambi designs effective minimalist furniture using materials like old wooden

pallets, plastic box strapping and string. He caught the eye of the design world last year and currently has pieces showing in the cutting edge Avant-Premier pop-up shop in Kloof Street.

Q: How did your business start?A: I started my business by making

prototypes at the CCDI (Cape Craft and Design Institute). Some of my pieces were chosen for the 2015 Design Indaba Emerging Creatives section, and after that it happened quickly. I got an honourable mention at the Southern Guild Design Foundation Awards, and House and Leisure chose me as one of its rising stars.

Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop?

A: First, it’s a quiet area and the location is perfect. It’s just off the N2 behind the power station, so it’s easy to get to and just five minutes from town.

Q: How did you find your premises?A: Through word of mouth.

Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business?

A: There’s a big art movement in Langa, meaning there are a lot of people

coming in and out. Visitors come on tours and buy art and smaller pieces made from wire and beads. They can see my work and take my card. They might not buy a piece of furniture in passing but they talk about it to others and tell them that there’s a guy in Langa who makes nice tables and chairs. So I get orders later, and it’s great exposure.

Q: Who are your neighbours?A: The local community of Langa.

Q: What are the shop rental/sales prices like in this area?

A: They’re much more affordable than the CBD.

Q: What is your shop footprint?A: There are between 50 and 100

people a day walking past visiting Langa for the art tours.

Q: Do you have any expansion plans?A: My first aim is to get investment for

proper equipment for my workshop. At the moment I can’t make some of the more complicated pieces I’ve designed, like my bar stool, as I only have a jigsaw and a hand drill. I made the prototypes at the CCDI using its equipment. Once I am fully equipped in the workshop, my dream would be to have my own showroom to sell from. And then to sell around the country, and throughout the world in the long term.

Q: Do you operate online as well?A: People can find me through

my Facebook page which brings me orders.

Q: What’s your most popular item?A: My coffee tables sell well. And

people love the bar stool, so I really hope I can get the equipment to get that into production soon.

If Britain leaves the EU

The big debate taking place in Europe at the moment is whether or not the UK is going

to remain a part of the European Union (EU). The possibility of a so-called Brexit will be a major political question until Britain goes to the polls on 23 June.

Those who want the UK to stay argue that an exit would lead to job losses, hinder trade, push up inflation, and weaken economic stability. Those in favour of leaving say it will allow the UK to control its own destiny, open the possibility of new trade agreements, and save money.

At the moment, it’s not clear who is winning this argument. Polls suggest that those who want to remain in the EU have only a slim lead.

The more philosophical question, however, is whether even having this debate shows that the world is going through something of an identity crisis.

The capitalist system on which the Western world has thrived over the last few centuries has been based on a few important premises. One of those is that the more open an economy, the better.

A critical part of this is the ability to trade widely, with minimal barriers to the movement of goods, services, capital and labour. Put simply, the more people you can trade with and the more cheaply you can do it, the bigger the economic benefit.

This is also one of the essential principles on which the EU is founded. Its policies are expressly designed to create an open economy.

Why then would anyone want to leave?

The problem is that openness in an economy also makes it more exposed to shocks. If it’s easy for people to invest and bring money in, it must be equally easy for them to take money out.

In the recent past some of the shocks to the global economy have been severe and have spread quickly. And this has caused people to question whether they shouldn’t protect themselves.

When viewed objectively, however, this is only putting short-term comfort ahead of long-term gain. There will always be episodes of pain in open economies, but they are also able to recover more quickly and more effectively.

The trouble is that people have become very short term in their thinking, and this is the real challenge the world faces. A Brexit would be nothing but a victory for short-termism – more evidence that we have become willing to compromise the things that sustain us for some sense of immediate gratification.

Q: What is happening in the property market in this area?

A: Melkbosstrand has over time become a very sought-after village. Initially known as a holiday town, it has gained popularity for all who seek a healthy balance between city and rural lifestyle with the added bonus of a low crime rate. There is a high demand for homes priced between R2,5m and R3,5m, and for apartments priced below R1m. Higher-priced properties (in excess of R5m) are slower moving. We are seeing, however, an increased demand for these lately. Melkbosstrand property prices are very resilient and even show growth when the rest of the market has taken a downturn.

Q: What do you love about Melkbos? A: Melkbos is a beautiful and

peaceful town with old-school charm. Neighbours care and the community is close-knit. I love the long stretches of pristine beach with crystal-clear water that laps at your feet while the little ones learn to surf in the gentle waves. Melkbos welcomes all ages from the retired to newlyweds raising families. I love the sound of foghorns at dawn in the winter. It’s also great to walk on the “wild side” beach at Haakgat for total escapism from the city, even while you gaze at the breathtaking Table Bay vista.

T ranslated directly as Milkbush beach, Melkbosstrand is so named because of

the Euphorbiaceae bushes that grow on sand dunes in the area, emitting a milky substance.

Melkbos, as locals know it, is just over 30km from Cape Town and has a relaxed seaside holiday feel to it when compared to the frenetic pace of the city. In fact, many prefer to live out there and commute to the city.Melkbos has developed a lot in the last decade. These days, the area boasts

Resident Ciska Austin says she was drawn to Melkbos initially because of a new job but has come to love the almost Mediterranean lifestyle that the area o� ers. “The food, the wine, the people – living here makes you feel like you’re permanently on holiday,” she says.

“There is a friendly, strong community and a very active neighbourhood watch,” says resident Gillian Bosho� , who moved from Table View to Melkbos six years ago. Gillian was attracted initially to the area because of the superb stretch of beach, which she says is where you’ll often fi nd the local teenagers congregating.

“We don’t have a mall, so they meet on the beach instead,” says Gillian, who also enjoys cycling to work and notes the wealth of mountain biking trails that are available at nearby Koeberg Nature Reserve. Other activities to do in the area include bodyboarding, surfi ng and kite-surfi ng, or joining the Melkbos Athletic Club.

After all that exercise you could head out with friends or family for a delicious meal at local restaurants like Damhuis Beach Restaurant, Cafe Orca, or Trattoria Maranello.

Q: What attracts buyers to Melkbosstrand?

Shopping centres should adjust their hours to shoppers’ needs

S uccessful retail centres should stay open later in order to boost retail sales because

modern South African lifestyles have changed. Marius Muller, CEO of shopping centre investor Pareto, believes the opening hours of many malls still lag behind the needs of the consumers who support them.

“It is important for malls and retailers to see the big picture when it comes to being open for shoppers,” says Muller.

He points out that many regional shopping centres, including some of the largest and most popular, still have standard minimum shopping hours until 6pm, which doesn’t make the cut for many consumers. He uses the example of a parent who works until 5pm, then navigates through peak-hour traffic to collect their children

from after-school care. Many consumers also work unconventional hours – from top executives and professionals to nursery school teachers and taxi drivers.

“The point is that to make the sale, you need to be open for shoppers when they are able to shop,” Muller says. “It comes down to knowing your customer, understanding how they live, work and play, and what times are most convenient for them to shop with you. It also means that retailers and malls need to work together to find their optimal opening times.”

Good transport links bolster property values

Properties near good transport links have shown stronger growth than those that

aren’t, according to Laurie Wener, managing director, Pam Golding Properties Western Cape.

Over the last six years the City of Cape Town has invested signifi cantly in public transport, a big bolster to the city’s real estate market. By September last year, the MyCiTi bus

service had 31 routes covering about 1,27 million km each month. There were 36 stations, more than 500 bus stops and more than 215 buses in the peak-hour periods, transporting 47,909 passengers each weekday. “Given the increasing numbers of vehicles on the road, rising fuel prices and people’s expectations of convenience, the more varied transport options you have, the more capital gain you can expect,” says Wener.

Cape Town’s top seaside locations – from the Atlantic Seaboard and Blouberg coast to as far as

Hermanus – are still seeing excellent demand and sales with prices holding fi rm, despite what has become a rather negative economic outlook.

“The Atlantic Seaboard location is just too irresistible,” says Ian Slot, managing director, See� Atlantic Seaboard. “Aside from the premium that buyers will pay for a seaside location, we also have the mountain range, and the elevated position means that the views are quite spectacular.”

The setting must rank among the best in the world – no wonder buyers from across the globe, and even Joburg’s wealthy, are still dropping millions on property here, with anything between R30m and R70m being paid for luxury homes here.

Clifton, for example, now boasts an average price of R20m, and a top price that is set to head to R200m quite soon. Most of the top-end areas here command an average sales price of around R10m, but in reality a luxury villa, especially one with a sea view will set you back between R20m and R50m, and of course much more if you hope to make Nettleton Road your home.Even at the V&A Waterfront Marina, you will need between R8m to R11m

for a two-bedroom apartment.It is not just the Atlantic Seaboard that is riding the big wave. The Blouberg coast now commands R10m to R20m for a luxury beach house. Further south, luxury houses in Hermanus sold for R20m to R24m over the last year.

“Beach property locations in the Cape are now commanding a premium of upwards of 40%. Even a property with sea views, and especially those within walking distance to the beaches, will command a premium,” says Slot.

As seen over the last two to three years, buyers cannot go wrong if they put their money into the primary locations.

“It is no surprise either given that most of the top global property markets tend to enjoy an ocean or waterside location,” says Slot. “Think of locations such as New York, Singapore, Sydney, Hong Kong and even London with its riverside location. These tend to remain resilient in the face of economic onslaught.”

Aside from the investment value, there is also anecdotal evidence that living near the sea, and water for that matter, supports a healthier lifestyle. People tend to spend more time outdoors, walking, jogging and cycling, for example, compared to those who live in the suburbs.

As South Africa continues to urbanise so rapidly, it is the responsibility of the urban property developer to work with

the cities in which it develops to ensure sustainable and positive growth. Duality is a theme that is evident everywhere – inside the home with the use of multipurpose spaces, and outside the home where shared spaces become gardens, outdoor gyms, and even art galleries in the case of Sea Point’s promenade.
