Reverie Social Table

Strolling into Reverie Social Table on Observatory’s Lower Main Road is like arriving at a friend’s house
for dinner. You’re welcomed with a glass of MCC which is pressed into your hand, and then you tour through the kitchen where chef Julia Hattingh looks up with a smile from preparing oysters. You look at the cosy, book-lined sitting room and the courtyard at the back before returning to claim a place at the 18-seater table to chat to other guests as they arrive. The concept is simple: book and pay online, then just show up and enjoy the five-course menu with wine pairings at one long table, where you can meet new people over a convivial evening of wonderful food.
“I always wanted to have a social table. It’s great from a chef’s perspective to see guests’ reactions to food first hand,” says Julia. “I also wanted to get away from the pretentious side of fine dining and give people a place to chat to new people about random things – to leave life on the outside and really relax.”
While the atmosphere is relaxed and informal, there’s nothing casual about the food. Prepared with great flair and creativity, the menu is different each day according to Julia’s inspiration. We started with West Coast oysters done two ways, mopping up every drop of delicious ceviche, subtle apricot granita and seaweed hollandaise. Textures are all part of the taste experience, as the line fish with al dente white bean and calamari salad demonstrated. Then meltingly tender braised pork belly contrasted beautifully with crunchy golden beetroot and a velvety-smooth saffron apple custard, a dish which silenced the whole table for a minute or two of rapturous taste appreciation.
Creative and decadently festive, the next dish bridged savoury and dessert, with whole cherries offsetting duck liver parfait on a nutty crumble with tantalising chunks of juicy porcini mushrooms. After this richness, the dessert of a fresh watermelon and strawberry sorbet with coconut and lime cheesecake was the perfect finale. Julia joined us to present each dish, paired with a wine from boutique Franschhoek wine estate Black Elephant Vintners, and then stayed to chat with us as the meal drew to a thoroughly satisfied and sociable close.
The social table is chef Julia Hattingh’s interpretation of the traditional French table d’hote

affair with a plat du jour, great coffee
and free Wi-Fi, popular with a growing
crowd of regulars who work in the area.

As we put our last set of papers for the year together (with most of our advertisers on
leave now), it really is time for a well-deserved break. For us it’s a combined feeling of excitement and relief. The team have loved bringing you Neighbourhood each week. We’re also all looking forward to a break. So we share how we’ll be spending our time.Till next year, take care and happy holidays.
ED’S DIARY:These are a few of my favourite things to
do this summer…
EAT: Have lunch at Joostenberg’s bistro
on the verandah. My favourite is the
seamé seared tuna.
DRINK: Babylonstoren’s maiden MCC
Sprankel is a brilliant brut. Think biscuit
flavours, and an ultrasmooth finish.
ESCAPE: For a fun night out go and see
the world-class production of Singing In
The Rain.
GIVE: Why not extend your giving to
others too? I like the innovation of
deskbags.co.za and breadlineafrica.org.
Best wishes
I’ll be spending my holiday...

This summer you won’t go wrong with any of these fine bottles of fizz.
Babylonstoren SprankelSimondium estate Babylonstoren has released its maiden Méthode Cap Classique. This blanc de blanc from Chardonnay grapes was made using the first grapes pressed on the rejuvenated farm. That was back in 2011, and the wine has spent the last four years maturing on the lees (the yeast cells left behind after the second fermentation in the bottle). With no added dosage, expect fresh acidity perfectly balanced by biscuit and brioche flavours.
Delaire Graff Sunrise Brut MCCThis beautiful estate atop the Helshoogte Pass is most famous for Cabernet Sauvignon and red blends, but its unusual MCC shows winemaker Morné Vrey knows a thing or two about sparkling wines. Unlike most local

bubbly, Chenin Blanc, not Chardonnay, dominates the wine; a style Vrey discovered while working a harvest in France. Aged for 15 months on the lees, it’s a fresh and lively MCC with plenty of gooseberry and cantaloupe on the nose.
Pierre Jourdan Belle RoseCrafted from Pinot Noir grapes, this delicious Méthode Cap Classique from Franschhoek estate Haute Cabrière is a fine fizz for your festive table. The Pinot Noir brings an elegant blush as well as fragrant notes of strawberries and cherries. If you’re planning a summery seafood feast, it’s a wonderful match for mussels, crayfish and prawns.
Billecart-Salmon Blanc de Blancs Grand CruFancy a bottle of something French? Dating back to 1818, Billecart-Salmon remains one of the few family-owned maisons in Champagne. The blanc de blanc is blended from five vineyards across two vintages, and brings a fine golden mousse and fresh elegant finish on the palate. It’s a perfect match with seafood, and won’t entirely break the bank.
J.C. Le Roux ScintillaMost people associate The House of J.C. Le Roux with pocket-friendly sparkling wines, not top-drawer Méthode Cap Classique. But the flagship Scintilla might just change your mind.
The 2009 vintage is a 75/25 blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that spent a staggering six years maturing on the lees.
“This signature J.C. Le Roux Cap Classique is made from only the very best grapes of the vintage,” says cellar master Elunda Basson. “It has a brilliant light yellow tint, fresh lime notes on the nose and integrated baked bread flavours with an elegant youthful finish that will benefit from additional bottle maturation.”

Tracking Christmas trends for the southern hemisphere can be a strange process. While in
the world of trend research we often take direction from big, global trade shows like Christmasworld in Germany, the focus there is understandably on a traditional, Eurocentric celebration. Even though South Africans like a bit of classic decor, snowflakes and reindeers are sometimes an odd addition to local homes. Recently, however, we’re seeing designers at these shows take a new look at the season with products and decor that remix traditional staples for a modern home.
One standout must-have from Christmasworld earlier this year was the flat Christmas tree. Whether rustic or refined, these graphic interpretations of traditional decor are ideal alternatives for people who either don’t have the

Festive feelroom for real trees, or are looking for a more contemporary take on the season. Local brands doing this include Designwerkstatt, with its 2-D, laser-cut trees available on hellopretty.co.za.
At the show, these trees often took the form of advent calendars too – often with more adult treats than the traditional chocolates. Single malt whiskies and liqueurs were common additions to the calendars at the show, but versions with contents such as tea, beauty products and biscuits were also seen.
While there will always be a place for classic decor, these kinds of updates are always interesting. They show an understanding that people’s homes have changed – often getting smaller – and ultimately that people don’t suspend their taste in decor just for the festive season.

Get your financial affairs in order for the holidays
W ith the end of the year and the holiday season upon us, the priority for many
South Africans will be to unwind and relax. This is when we put our feet up, enjoy time with our loved ones, and let go of our stresses and strains.
However, as unpleasant as it is to consider, that idyll can be wrecked if we haven’t put our financial affairs in order. Unfortunately, the holiday season is also a time when accidents increase and criminals spot opportunity.
All of us should therefore take a moment to make sure we have the right protections in place to prevent financial disaster. Here is a list of things that you should be sure you have in place before you go on holiday.
Medical aidSouth Africa has one of the finest private healthcare systems in the world, but that comes at a price. Just one day in hospital can cost R10,000.
Check your medical cover to make sure that it covers you and your family for potential emergencies, and note the numbers you have to dial if you are in an accident and need help. If you are a member of a network option, check where the nearest network hospital and doctor will be to your holiday destination.
Life insuranceLosing a source of income can be devastating, and estimates suggest that most South Africans are heavily under-insured. Make sure that your insurance will cover any income you will lose if the worst were to happen, and bear in mind that if you or your partner were to become disabled there are probably additional expenses that you will have to bear such as modifying your house or hiring a caregiver.
Car and household insuranceCheck the terms of your policy to make sure that you have informed your insurer of all the security features of your home. Also make sure that your car is roadworthy. If you have an accident and the insurer can show that the tyres were too worn or the windscreen wipers didn’t work, they may have grounds not to pay out.
WillsIn the worst-case scenario, do you have a will in place that will protect your family? Talk to a professional estate planner about what needs to go into your will, how your assets will be distributed, and what you can do to reduce fees and duties. It’s a macabre thing to do at this time of year, but it will also be a comfort to know that you have made the right provisions.
All of us
should take a moment to make sure we have the right protections in place to prevent financial disaster
Potential
buyers may get caught in the holiday hype and view properties at the coast in December, but many wait until after the festive season to buy
End-of-year property salesWith most people heading off on holiday, property professionals estimate fewer sales this time of year
WORDS: LISA DEWBERRY
IMAGE: ISTOCK
With the festive season imminent and most people taking a break soon, property
purchasing begins to slow down. Property professionals estimate that over the December holidays sales of properties across South Africa drop by as much as half the usual amount.
Herschel Jawitz, CEO, Jawitz Properties, says fewer properties (by as much as 70% less in some areas), are sold over the holiday season across the country. He says December should be no better or worse than other times of the year to buy properties, but because many people take time off work to relax, there’s less interest in getting involved in the house-buying process.
“While there may be a perception that more holiday homes are bought at the coast during December, many buyers also have a perception that it is not a good time to buy as sellers at the coast ask higher prices than in off-season months. Potential buyers may get caught in the holiday hype and view properties at the coast in December, but many wait until after the festive season to buy,” says Jawitz. Many law firms close over the holidays delaying processing and transfer of property. However, it has been found that some buyers may still buy in December using year-end bonuses towards deposits, he says.
Berry Everitt, Group CEO, Chas Everitt International Property Group, says in December the volume of sales countrywide is usually around 50% of the volume in other months and mostly primary homes in major metropolitan areas are bought.
He says it’s a good time to buy these properties because individuals selling in December are generally serious about concluding a transaction as they may be relocating in January
or by financial year end, and tend to be more willing to negotiate.
Everitt says the property market is slower in December but buyers are more likely to have less competition and view homes in a relaxed holiday atmosphere. However, he says they may not have as many homes to choose from because owners who don’t urgently need to sell, may list their home only in January after their own holidays.
“Many people also prefer to wait for the new year before buying a property to see whether they get a salary increase and for regular household expenses such as insurance, medical aid and school fees to take place. These increases, and paying off holiday debt, may affect purchasing decisions,” says Everitt.
There’s also a change in property listings and search dynamics. “The real estate market is generally quiet in December from a buying and selling perspective with most estate agencies shut from mid-December. People are either away on vacation or enjoying quality time with family, so put off buying or selling until the new year,” Simon Bray, CEO, Private Property, says.

Gita Goven, a woman who has been in the architecture industry for some 30 years, talks about communiTgrow, a project focused on sustainable settlement development; her company, ARG Design; a short film she was featured in; and some of her exciting future projects
Q: Can you tell us why communiTgrow was founded?
A: A group of experienced built environment and property development professionals, practitioners, applied researchers, and companies have been working in the arena of sustainable settlement development since the early 80’s. Many of us come from the context of lived realities in apartheid settlements and are committed to using our skills to make great places, particularly, accessible to lower-income communities. Over the years we experienced the limitations to transformation even with the best of intentions.
We have also been aware of the rapid pace of urbanisation in the four largest cities and the secondary cities, largely made up of informal settlements and black, rural urban migrants. We all began to conclude that an additional approach was necessary that could create more inspiring possibilities for individuals and communities.
Q: Can you tell us about a few of your socially and environmentally conscious projects?
A: Noteworthy projects include the development and delivery of integrated housing for landless labourers and small farmers in 40 villages in Gujarat, India. This included the making of local building materials.
The second area of learning for me came from my work in co-founding and working as a volunteer in Development Action Group, a non-governmental organisation in Cape Town, focused on housing and land rights in the mid-80s.
A multi-award-winning project that still sets a benchmark for sustainable building and development in South Africa, is the Lynedoch EcoVillage, a living and learning centre in Stellenbosch. This project, started in 1996, has brought an intentional culturally, racially and economically diverse group of householders onto one site.
Q: How has ARG functioned as an interface between state and private interests?
A: ARG Design creates innovative solutions for sustainable settle ments, public places and healthy communities.
Most of our work is within the public sector and seeks to transform settlements both from the inside out and the outside in. We use design and its processes to create solutions that inspire and attract people to love and care for their environments.
Q: Why did you decide to participate in the City Desired project’s short film, The Architect?
A: The idea of one story as part of 10 different city narratives provides a rich snapshot of the commitment that diverse Capetonians have to making a determined difference in such varied fields. I come from humble beginnings and am grateful for the opportunities that I have had to nurture my skills and my contribution to the development agenda.
Q: Are there any future projects that you’re excited about?
A: We are working on a retirement village in Constantia, an amusement park in Windhoek, a university master plan, and the start of city-making projects in various African countries. I have also been invited to develop the themes for the design of gateways to Abu Dhabi.

Like in so many other areas in Cape Town, there is a shortage of available property stock
in Bellville. Although the well-established suburb with its large plots and good schools has been attracting buyers for years, there has been renewed interest from those migrating from upcountry areas.
Louise Kock, agent, Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty, says, “We are seeing a lot more interest in the Bellville area, including movement from the Southern Suburbs, because of Bellville’s small-town feel, good schools, low crime rate and great location.”
“There has been a general increase in the number of buyers over the
Demand for homes in
Bellville is growing
last few years, but in suburbs like Eversdal, which specifically attracts those wanting to be in the school catchment area, market activity has increased exponentially.”
She notes that properties in the Eversdal area which are priced correctly, will usually sell within days of being listed, which leads to a constant shortage of stock.
“Houses in this suburb as well as in nearby Stellenberg and Stellenryk, will sell from R1,8m at the lower end to more than R4m at the higher end. There are also a few townhouse developments, with units starting at about R1,1m.”
Marcel van Zyl, Jawitz Properties in Tygerberg, says the demand for

homes is driving prices. However, the area offers value for money, particularly when it comes to larger homes in the higher price range. “The lower-end properties might be priced a little higher than expected, but this is because the limited stock of properties in this category are in high demand,” Van Zyl says.
“The area of Bellville offers a range of good government schools (primary and high) and private schools, as well as good junior (nursery) schools. Most neighbourhoods are well-established and feature smaller shopping malls close to home. Ease of travel is yet another factor that buyers buying in the city consider. It takes roughly 20 minutes to drive to the airport and a mere 10 minutes to drive to Cape Town.”
