Artisan bakeries are raising the doughnut to a whole new level, using fresh croissant dough to bring us the irresistible doughssant or cronut

Forget cupcakes and macarons, the latest sweet craze is the humble doughnut. And this

trend has taken Cape Town by storm with American chain Krispy Kreme launching its first South African store in the Mother City this month. If you find it hard to get excited about this supermarket staple – however many sprinkles, fillings and toppings you add on – rather seek out an artisanal alternative that has been gathering a cult following over the last few years.

A cross between a croissant and a doughnut, the cronut or doughssant is a gloriously decadent ball of freshly made croissant dough, deep fried at precisely the right temperature to balloon up light and fluffy, with a buttery flavour that puts regular doughnuts deep in the shade.

Cronuts are hard to track down and this adds to the mystique. You won’t find them at any old bakery – only those that make croissants from scratch, so they’ll have fresh croissant dough to play with, making them in limited quantities and selling out fast.

those who are prepared to get up early on a Saturday morning and queue at the Bree Street bakery. We were there for the High Tea doughssant, filled with an Earl Grey custard and topped with a miniature macaron, tiramisu, lemon meringue and lamington – a thing of beauty and over-the-top indulgence. Made only on a Saturday, each week has a surprise theme and there is never any repetition, so it’s a once-off taste extravaganza with devotees reminiscing nostalgically over their favourites.

Coimbra in Claremont is the place to sample the essential nature of the cronut, lightly sprinkled with cinnamon sugar without any filling, the perfect treat if you want something light and fluffy without the richness of a full-on dessert. There are also filled cronuts, but they sell out fast, so it’s worth calling and reserving a box.

Schoon in Stellenbosch, home of artisan bread and patisserie, makes enough extra croissant dough every day to spare for a few batches of cronuts, filled with either salted caramel, chocolate, vanilla or lemon.

And those in the Deep South have their own source of decadent delight at the Village Market at Noordhoek Farm Village every Wednesday evening from 5pm. The Foodbarn Deli conjures up a range of cronuts just for the market, lavishly sandwiched with chocolate, cinnamon or vanilla cream mousseline.

That’s what I did with my family recently, dropping our bags at the charming Babylon’s

Tower Cottage on the high slopes of the valley. Fynbos walks at Bouchard Finlayson and superb Sauvignon Blanc at eye-catching Ataraxia wine estate were two of the Saturday morning highlights. By lunchtime, however, we had happily settled in at Creation Wines at the northern end of the valley.

Back in 2002 owners Jean-Claude and Carolyn Martin converted old pasturelands into fields of flowering fynbos and rows of neatly trellised vines. The latter giving rise to their superb range of cool-climate wines. As with the rest of the valley, Creation’s Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are outstanding, particularly the “Art of…” limited-edition releases. They’re premium wines with a premium price, but even at a more affordable level Creation over-delivers on quality – the Rhône-style Syrah, delicate Pinot Noir and spicy Syrah-Grenache blend are all memorable.

Memorable too are the innovative tasting experiences on offer. No impersonal bar counter and cheap glasses here. Rather expect an elegant tasting room with charming staff and top-notch stemware to match these top-tier wines. Take a seat indoors by the fire, or on the terrace with its charming valley views.

The Creation tasting room and restaurant share the same space, and visitors are encouraged to have a bite to eat while they discover the wines. The winery commissioned bespoke chocolates for the fascinating chocolate-and-wine pairings, while the cheese-and-charcuterie pairings offer up delicious local produce matched with four Creation wines.

Your best bet, though, is the tapas pairing, where each wine is matched to small plates ranging from Malay-spiced pickled tuna to slow-braised lamb. For light bites, a range of cheese and charcuterie platters are offered. Kids aren’t left out of the foodie entertainment either, with a special menu for young ones and the chance to try the kids’ pairing menu.

As the cold front rolls slowly into the Cape, the cosy cottages, fine food and wonderful wines make the Hemel-en-Aarde valley a perfect destination for a winter escape.

R ecently, I attended a luncheon hosted by Mondiall Kitchen & Bar

for the launch of a new autumn/winter menu. I’d heard great things about the restaurant, particularly the signature fish tacos dish. So as a part-time pescatarian, full-time hungry person, and first-time

diner, I had high expectations.

My dining partner and I were welcomed into the restaurant with

a refreshing glass of bubbly and ushered to the outside terrace where we would be dining. The interior is spacious yet cosy, with natural light flooding in highlighting earthy tones and rustic pieces that had recently been added to warm up the space in the colder months. There was a delicate selection of fresh flowers on each table, and it was 23ºC outside, almost a summer’s day, and perfect for dining on the terrace which overlooks the harbour and Table Mountain.

Patrick Symington, the charming host and the owner of Mondiall, arrived and starters were served – a quintet of the shellfish bisque seasoned with fresh herbs and saffron aioli; the roasted cauliflower with cauli flower cream,

Parmesan, pesto and tomato; and the smoked goat’s cheese parcel filled with caramalised onion and roasted root vegetable, to name a few.

For mains my dining partner decided on the braised beef short-rib with pickled beetroot, cucumber salad and garlic buttermilk. She said the combination was divine. I opted for the seared Norwegian salmon with artichokes, radishes and a chive velouté. The salmon was fresh, soft and vibrant in colour, and subtly seasoned. The chive velouté was creamy and not at all overpowering, while the artichokes and radishes added a lovely crispy texture to the dish.

Dessert was a trio of treats. The banana split with caramalised banana, macadamia nuts and maraschino cherries with milk ice cream, the chef’s cheese of the day, and a salted chocolate tart served with créme fraiche – my favourite. The trio was a sweet ending to an afternoon of sublime dining that warrants a return to Mondiall. I must make special mention of Mark, our waiter, who was warm and attentive, as well as compliment chef Stephen Mandes

and his team for beautifully executed and perfectly timed food. I’ll have to try the fish tacos next time.

Mondiall – a world of food to explore

One of the most noticeable trends in product design for the home at the moment, is

reducing forms and silhouettes down to simple geometric shapes. This almost child-like design treatment often veers towards the avant-garde, but the news coming out of the top trade shows internationally is that this trend is poised to break into the mainstream soon.

The thinking behind this trend is that people are tired of overwrought design and bored with minimalism. This happy medium approach sees creatives combining unusually simplistic forms together in a bare-bones approach to product design. The Dutch trend guru Li Edelkoort has already flagged the circle as the motif to watch in the coming few seasons, but it seems that they may only be one part of this design aesthetic.

One of the key brands called out for this trend at the recent Salon del Mobile fair was the Italian studio Zanotta. Designs such as the Speed sideboard epitomise this geometric design, with an emphasis on super simplistic forms.

And the trend has filtered into the discerning end of the local market too. The Solar Mirror by Okha, for example, is made up of backlit, overlapping circles and makes for a very contemporary geometric statement piece.

This building block minimalism is one of the trends you may not even notice until all of a sudden it’s everywhere. It’s deceptively simple in its thinking, but with classic and futuristic design references, it’s a perfect fit for people’s tastes in the here and now.

with an online platform), Nikki Albertyn leaves her desk at 1pm every day to channel her creativity into her love affair with pâtisserie, cake-baking and decorating in her LionHeart kitchen. She shares premises with Zana products’ new studio in Woodstock.

Q: Howdidyourbusinessstart?A: My keen interest in food led me

to doing the part-time, one-year pâtisserie course at Silwood School of Cookery. I discovered an unexplained love for baking. Pâtisserie is the perfect balance of creativity and skill and gets me so excited. I started to develop the LionHeart brand while studying at Silwood, and working part-time at Zana. With a little help from my boyfriend, who is an ex-web developer, I set up my online store, baked and photographed cakes for my listings, and went live with my site in February this year.

our online store, a platform for customers to pick an existing cake design and customise their flavours. Our marketing is done via Facebook and Instagram. I will almost always get a cake query after posting a pic of an order I’ve made.

been the Astronomica Mini. I think it’s the colours and the playfulness of the cake that captivate people.

A: Zana was looking for a larger space to move into in and around Woodstock. I mentioned that if we found a premises that could accommodate a kitchen, I would love to set one up and contribute to the rent. My decision was determined by where Zana went, as my plan was to do LionHeart half-day and Zana the other.

Q: Howdidyoufindyourpremises?A: After working with agents and

trawling Gumtree to no avail, we came into a bit of luck. Our neighbours were also moving and had already found a new space, which had a huge open space right next to theirs for rent.

A: It’s generally from about R68/m2 and up. It’s much more affordable than being in town, but Woodstock prices are definitely on the up.

In tough times consumers naturally look at where they can cut back on spending. With household

budgets under pressure, many people have to look at what they can do without to make ends meet.

While it is important to scrutinise where your money is going, it’s also important to make the right decisions about what you can do without.

Unfortunately many people take the high-risk option of reducing their insurance cover or even stopping the premiums altogether, and this can end up being far costlier in the long run.

While it may be highly unlikely that your house and everything in it will go up in flames, it is vital that you consider what might happen if it did. Even if you suffered a break-in and lost a large chunk of your possessions, how would you replace them and how would your quality of life suffer?

Insurance is one of those things that you can underestimate until you really need it. And if you don’t have it when it matters, the cost far outweighs anything you would have paid in premiums.

Instead of reducing their cover, many South Africans should actually be checking that they have enough insurance to sort things out if the worst were to happen. In hard times, the last thing you want is to be burdened with

even more financial stress because your insurance was inadequate. In order to make sure you are not underinsured, you should do the following:

1Make sure that your property is insured for what it would cost

to rebuild it, not its purchase price. The value may have appreciated significantly over time. This should be reviewed at least every year, and definitely after any renovations or home improvements.

2Conduct a proper inventory of your household contents to estimate

their replacement value. The cost to replace imported items in particular would have increased notably in recent years with the drop in the value of the rand. If your household contents are not insured for their full value, your insurer may not pay out the total claim.

3Remember to insure individual items that leave the house

regularly. This includes jewellery, expensive sporting equipment or electronic gadgets like tablets or laptops. If these are stolen outside of your house, they may not be covered if they haven’t been specified on your policy.

Sudhir Pragjee, director, The Pearls of Umhlanga Development, says, “The opening of Pearl Walk will undoubtedly be a major boost for the Umhlanga area as a whole. While this area unarguably offers the best in terms of its seaside location and upscale residential developments, there is nothing like Pearl Walk.”
