Forests here are full of edible treasures if you know where and how to look for them

WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

Don’t expect to fi nd a mushroom hunter at home the morning after a good autumn rain.

When I caught up with expert Gary Goldman, The Mushroom Fundi, it was past noon and he’d just got home with three baskets full of wild mushrooms.

The leading fi eld expert on wild mushrooms, he has been gathering them for top chefs for many years, lecturing and leading mushroom foraging expeditions, and collecting material for a defi nitive mushroom book.

Unlike many mushroom gatherers who keep their knowledge and secret spots in the family, Gary’s mission is to educate people so that more of us can safely enjoy these forest riches and learn to distinguish the edible from the toxic. Asked if the sudden popularity of foraging is creating a shortage, he says, “There are plenty to fi nd for those that know mushrooms.”

One of the best ways to learn about wild mushrooms is to join an organised expedition. Delheim’s renowned mushroom hunts happen two weekends a year – 16 to 17 June and 1 to 2 July.

Always a sell-out with only 40 places per day, the expeditions are led by Gary and Delheim’s Nora Sperling-Thiel, who grew up foraging with her mother on the estate. Between them they impart a wealth of information before leading you to the best spots in the private forests.

Participants return with baskets of freshly picked edibles to a mushroom feast at the estate’s garden restaurant. Another annual hunt led by Gary is at Elgin today and another will be on 25 to 26 June. Both culminate in an excellent three-course mushroom lunch. If you don’t get a space on one of these, put your names down on Gary’s list for a private foraging trip with him closer to home. “I phone you when the conditions are good and guarantee that there will be mushrooms for breakfast. If not, you get your money back.”

And what if you head out to Newlands Forest on your own and happen upon some mushrooms that just might be the tasty ones you enjoyed at a chef’s table? Gary is fi rm on this point: “You have to be completely sure that you have identifi ed wild mushrooms correctly. Be 100% sure before you consume them.” The simple solution is to send him photos of the mushrooms you fi nd and he will identify them for you.

For those who don’t know, a bunny chow is a hollowed-out loaf of bread cut in half or quarters,

fi lled with either a lamb or bean curry, and then topped with a “lid” made from the scooped-out bread. This messy yet yummy dish has been a part of Durban tradition since the 1940s, but some theories point to an even earlier date of conception. Though there are many stories about how the humble bunny chow came to be, one thing is certain – it is 100% Durban.

For those in the Mother City who are looking for a bunny chow fi x, look no further than Masala Club.

When Michaella Robertson, a born-and-bred Durban girl, made the move to the Mother City, she just couldn’t fi nd a decent Durban curry. So she took action. “I went back to Durban and learnt how to make a proper Durban curry. After working in a handful of Durban curry dens, I learnt that the secret is all in the masala. I came back to Cape Town and started Masala Club. My mission is to bring authentic Durban curry to the people of Cape Town.”

And the bunny chow was the perfect vessel to serve up this tasty treat.

“The bunny chow has a rich history in South African culture going back to the 1940s. Legend has it that Bhanya (owner of Kapitan’s, a restaurant that stood at the corner of Victoria and Albert streets in Durban) opened up a serving hatch to sell takeaways to migrant workers. It was much easier to serve the curry in a hollowed out loaf of bread rather than a roti roll,” says Michaella.

So what is the secret to the perfect bunny chow? Well, according to Michaella, it is “masala, fresh curry leaves, tender lamb or tasty sugar beans, and fresh bread”. Having sampled her dish at The Neighbourgoods Market, I can attest that it is a recipe for success. Don’t miss out on her chilli carrot salad either, it’s a must-have!

Be sure to visit Masala Club at The Old Biscuit Mill for The Neighbour goods Market every Saturday, and at The Village Idiot one Sunday a month. On Thursdays it does o ce lunch deliveries.

From ancient herbal remedy to the “Mother’s Ruin” of Victorian London, gin has a

long history stretching back to the Middle Ages. Today, the Cape’s craft gin scene is booming, with local distillers blending classic juniper notes with a host of local botanicals to create handcrafted, locally inspired gins.

Inverroche DistilleryOne of the pioneers of craft gin in the Western Cape, Inverroche Distllery outside Stilbaai uses selected botanicals from the Cape Floral

Kingdom to impart a unique fl avour and aroma to each of its three artisan gins. The Classic and Verdant make for fi ne sipping gins, but it’s the fynbos-infused Amber that is perhaps most intriguing. Try it with a few blocks of ice, a splash of tonic and a sliver of orange peel.

Blaauwklippen Triple ThreeBlaauwklippen estate outside Stellenbosch has become the latest winery to turn its hand to spirits, with the recent release of the Triple Three Gin selection. Organic lemons defi ne the Citrus Infusion, while the 100%

Juniper Berries Gin embraces the classic origins of the drink the Dutch fi rst dubbed “genever”. My favourite? The African Botanicals gin with notes of buchu, rooibos and cedar wood. Pour a measure over ice and sip slowly as a quick-and-easy sundowner.

Wilderer GinLong famous for his small-batch bottlings of grappa, liqueur and eaux de vie, Helmut Wilderer has been at the forefront of locally made craft spirits for over 20 years. He’s now branched out into artisanal gin, and his Wilderer Fynbos Gin is simply superb. Made using 27 botanicals, from honeybush to wild dagga, “the recipe was developed over the last 18 months,” says Wilderer. “The idea being that we wanted to create a gin of unique character, with a complex fl avour profi le and wide spectrum of aromas.” It ticks all of those boxes. Enjoy neat over ice, or with quality tonic water.

Cape Town Gin CompanyThe Cape Town Gin Company is a new label on local shelves o ering two distinctive gins. The Rooibos Red is infused with organic rooibos grown in the Cederberg Mountains; pungent on the nose with a smooth palate, it’s a good choice for cocktails and mixers. The Classic Dry gin is a more traditional o ering, redolent of juniper and citrus.

Looking for a night away that still has a bit of the city buzz to it?

“Welcome to the crystal way of life,” said the porter as he

handed me a flute of sparkling water. That simple phrase, which instantly caught my attention upon my arrival, would stay with me throughout my visit to the African Pride Crystal Towers Hotel and Spa. The hotel has pioneered stylish African-themed decor with top-class service and fine attention to detail. With extraordinary red and black velvet furniture and sparkly crystal chandeliers, standing in the foyer is an experience in itself – it’s immediately enticing.

This excitement is carried throughout the hotel where a fine mix of fluorescent magenta (down) lighting, mirrors and crystals shine brightly. The 180-bed hotel was one of the first in the area. Only 10 minutes from the city centre, it’s becoming a favourite with visiting executives. It’s no wonder the

hotel boasts a business centre where you can print and finish anything business related. There’s also the fact that here business can be pleasurable too – you can check your email with Table Mountain in the background.

Then again if it’s only pleasure that you seek, then that’s what the crystal way of life also caters to – a leisurely night away. Unwind in your room which also exudes glitzy and ethnic decor. With plush interiors and access to five-star amenities like the Life Day Spa or suspended Pool Bar, you will feel pampered in no time. And that’s even before you’ve headed out to dinner.

First head to the Ruby Bar for a stylish pre-dinner drink. Then the highlight is eating at the Towers Restaurant where executive chef Terrence Ford creates taste sensations with his deconstructed dining. From the succulent fricassee of prawns, to the perfection of the salmon with pea purée, and finally the ultra-decadent chocolate mud pie dessert, each dish is a masterpiece, allowing you to mix flavours as you wish.

Staying at Crystal Towers is the perfect city experience which gives you many reasons to return as often as you choose.

New possibilities for living in a more natural setting

Approximately three hours from Cape Town, situated between Barrydale and Ladismith

and surrounded by the Touwsberg mountain range, is the Touwsberg Private Game and Nature Reserve. With an expanding urban landscape many people, particularly those of retirement age, are looking to invest in a lifestyle closer to nature, away from the noise and distractions of the city.

The reserve is a family business that was founded and developed by Freddie and Ingrid la Grange in 2007. Their son, Hugo, is the co-owner and sales manager, and he lives and works on the reserve. His interest – and core passion – lies in sustainability and eco-friendly living, which is in line with the reserve’s vision of “life inspired by nature’s beauty”.

There are 18 di erent farms that make up the reserve, and about half of the land is privately owned. Each 1ha plot is developed by the owner according to strict guidelines. Only natural paint colours may be used and, as far as possible, natural materials for building. According to Hugo, there are a number of areas on the reserve where a variety of natural stone can be found, and owners are encouraged to make use of it when building. There is also timber available for use in the reserve’s two timber houses.

All houses are fi tted with solar panels and a wind turbine. “There has been an increase in availability and technology pertaining to self-sustainable products,” says Hugo. He says that since the establishment of the reserve in 2007, sustainable technology has become cheaper and more e cient.

Maximum privacy is ensured with plenty of wildlife interaction, and owners are free to roam on any communal part of the reserve. The reserve is home to many diverse species of fl ora and free-roaming animals including the black wildebeest, eland, bontebok, gemsbok, kudu, mountain reedbuck, red hartebeest, springbok, zebra, ostrich and even gira e. There are also natural predators such as the caracal, jackal and the mountain leopard.

Although tourism isn’t the main objective, guests may gain access to the reserve by renting one of the eight self-catering guesthouses. Guests can enjoy various activities including night and day game-watching, 4x4 routes, mountain bike trails, bird-watching, hiking trails, and various water activities, such as catch-and-release fi shing. What adds to the appeal is that the reserve provides an eco-friendly and sustainable lifestyle whether you’re a weekend guest or a permanent resident.

Casting director Cheryl Battersby has recently made her new studio available

for hire during the off-season winter months. In a vibey part of Woodstock close to The Old Biscuit Mill, it works well for photography shoots and as an exhibition space.

Q: How did your business start?A: I have been working as a casting

director in Cape Town for the past 20 years using various studios and sometimes creating pop-up studios for a season. Last year, I decided I wanted to create a space of my own and thought I’d look in the Woodstock area.

Q: Why did you choose this area for your studio?

A: I love the energy of Woodstock – it’s creative and a bit edgy with an array of fantastic coffee shops, restaurants and wonderfully creative small businesses. Woodstock is also very easily accessible from most areas. It’s easy to get to from the city centre and for those coming from the Southern and Northern Suburbs off the N1 and the N2.

Q: How did you find your premises?A: I drove past the premises many

times and had seen a To Let sign. When I eventually enquired it had just been let to someone else. Fortunately for me that deal fell through and I was contacted and offered the premises.

Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business?

A: The space is very flexible and it is very easily made into a blank canvas for any set-dressing or

styling that may be required by a photographer or film client. It’s a large open space with an industrial feel and high ceilings – a cubed space to do with as you will. It has easy ground floor access from the street for props and sets.

Q: Who are your neighbours?A: My immediate neighbours

in the building are an art and framing shop, a furniture shop, a photographer, and a creative space which will soon be serving health foods and coffees. One of my favourite neighbours, who is also on Salt River circle, is a shop called Platform8, which houses various designers and jewellers, and where you can get a fantastic coffee and breakfast.

Q: What are the shop rental/sales prices like in this area?

A: The rental prices have increased over the past few years due to the growing popularity of the area, but I feel that they are still reasonable for the amount of space available.

Q: Do you have any expansion plans?

A: No, not at present.

Q: Do you operate online as well?A: No.

Q: What’s your most popular service?

A: Aside from the studio being used as my casting studio, I have had quite a few photographers who like to hire the studio for their shoots and who are now considering the space as a pop-up gallery to display their works.

No place for business as usual

By the end of this year, it is likely that Standard & Poor’s would have downgraded South

Africa’s sovereign debt to below investment grade status. Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and his team are doing as much as they can to try to prevent this from happening, but it is unlikely that they will succeed.

This is not only because their interventions are probably too late, but because they cannot do everything that needs to be done on their own. For South Africa to avoid junk status, what we need more than anything is faster economic growth, and that requires clearer leadership and policy direction from more than just the National Treasury.

The simple truth is that South Africa’s economy is meandering because there is no real direction from our leaders. There is a reluctance to make any difficult decisions about how we move the economy along.

We cannot simply carry on as usual and hope that things will somehow sort themselves out. Things have to change, otherwise we will continue to underperform.

The chief economist at Investment Solutions, Lesiba Mothata, believes that one of those hard decisions is that raising taxes isn’t going to help. Other countries that have been in similar situations to the one South Africa is in now have had no success by increasing the tax burden on individuals and businesses. This is because higher taxes don’t stimulate an economy. If anything, they do the opposite.

Instead, Mothata believes we have to think of innovative ways of increasing our growth, and primarily that means focusing on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). These have to be the key to South Africa’s prosperity, and unfortunately we are neglecting them.

This country has developed in such a way that large businesses control most of the economy. They also have the most influence with the government. The result is that SMEs are at a heavy disadvantage and they aren’t receiving the kind of support that would really drive their growth.

In South Africa, SMEs only employ around 40% of the workforce. In India, this figure is 67%, and the government there still thinks the sector can do better. It recently announced that any new business will be tax exempt for its first five years.

These are the kinds of policies that South Africa needs to look at to make starting and building a business an attractive idea. We have so many entrepreneurs in this country. What we need is to give them the right space in which to prosper and build the economy.

I contend that for a

nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handleWINSTON CHURCHILL

Rosebank’s Keyes Avenue transforming into pedestrian-friendly arts precinctPhase one of a project to

convert Rosebank’s Keyes Avenue area into a dedicated

art precinct has begun. This upgrade in the heart of Rosebank aims to attract visitors and tourists to a more pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly space.

The area is already home to the Everard Read Gallery, the Circa Gallery and the Goodman Gallery. The project’s objective is to create attractive streets so people will be encouraged to walk or cycle through the area.

StudioMAS Architects and Urban Designers created the development plan for the area upgrade.

It addresses the state of disrepair of streets, its many blank and windowless walls, and parking garages that face the road. These create an unpleasant, even unsafe, environment for pedestrians.

“The current condition of Keyes Avenue appears to be a haphazard overlap of cars, scholars, church congregants, gallery visitors and daily commuters,” states the plan.

Its architects highlight a street in disrepair, dominated by vehicle movements to the detriment of pedestrians.

They note that despite the “degradations and state of the streets, pavement and buildings” the area is an emerging precinct with “great development potential”.

Phase one of the Keyes Avenue art precinct, involving the upgrade of the pavements, is currently under way. The second phase is imminent.

More than 30% of homeowners selling their properties through

Sotheby’s International Realty in Gauteng are doing so with the intention of relocating to the Western Cape, says company chairman Lew Geffen.

“According to our agents in Pretoria, the figure stands at around 10% to 15% of their sellers, but it’s as high as

40% in many Joburg suburbs such as Dainfern and Blair Athol,” says Geffen.

Property economist at FNB, John Loos, puts the Western Cape as the province with the strongest net inflow of repeat buyers and suggests people are moving away from Gauteng for lifestyle reasons.

But according to Geffen, those reloc ating to Cape Town in particular need to study the market and manage their expectations.

Can you run a business from a sectional title home?

It is clear from the Sectional Titles Act that a flat or townhouse is intended for residential use, and generally

cannot be used as an office or place of business – unless the owners of every other unit in the ST scheme agree in writing to a change of use. This means that owners who have not secured this consent can be told by the trustees of the scheme to immediately close their home-based businesses or face legal action. Young families keep the Pretoria East market buoyantP retoria East has become

very popular for young and upcoming professionals

and young families because of its central position – within easy reach of Centurion, Midrand, Joburg and OR Tambo International Airport.

“Now that there is very little land left to develop, property values are sure to rise,” says IHPC estate agent Almarie Joubert.

Anne-Marie Scholtz, owner of top local agency RealNet Elegance, says, “Prices

for high-end homes in the Silver Lakes Golf Estate to the east of Pretoria have climbed steeply in recent months in response to a growing shortage of stock. The average price of recent sales in Silver Lakes has been around R4m,” she says.

“And although it’s the premier estate in the area, we are now experiencing more robust sales in the surrounding estates like The Meadows and Six Fountains, where buyers currently have a greater choice of homes for sale and the average price is only

around R2,7m.” Joubert says she has dealt with many buyers from America and Europe – Germany and Italy in particular – and this could be attributed to the “embassy boulevard” in central Pretoria.

Anton van der Walt, owner of the Chas Everitt International franchise for Pretoria East, says there has been a steady growth in prices which have risen by 7% to 8% in the past year and made the area one of the safest investment prospects in the Tshwane metro.

Semigration patterns“The fact is that residential property in Cape Town is, on average, far more expensive, and you’re likely to get less house for your money if you’re only spending your Gauteng house sale price," he says.

"On the up side, return on investment on Cape Town property also tends to be higher, so once you’re in the market you should have a higher-yielding, safe investment.”

Q: What attracts buyers to the area?A: The climate is exceptional, the

quality of life is fantastic and value for money cannot compare. Nestled in the arms of Table Mountain with dramatic views over the city, there are only a few more beautiful and scenic places to live. Oranjezicht offers a quality selection of top schools such as St Cyprians and Herzlia, to name a few. There is a wonderful community feel to the area with many local parks and coffee shops to visit. The state of the art licence plate recognition camera system in the area, supported by RE/MAX Living and ADT, encourages all security forces in the area to work together to keep the community safe.

Q: Who is buying property in the area and what types of properties are available?

A: Oranjezicht is extremely popular with those looking for a spacious family home. Homes tend to be on larger erven compared to other suburbs within the city bowl. Houses are rich in character, offer ing good accommodation and fair-sized outside areas for chil dren and family pets. A number of our clients have returned after living abroad with fond memories of their childhood. Couples are enrolling their young children at the excellent schools nearby. Properties range from large, architecturally designed homes with magnificent views, to Victorian row-houses steeped in heritage, charm and character.

Agent commentary

The backdrop of Table Mountain in all its moods and the long views over the city and harbour from

the upper slopes are an ever-present feature of Oranjezicht. Stretching up from the CBD between Gardens and Vredehoek, Oranjezicht is popular with families because of its large and often lavish homes with gardens, top schools nearby, tree-lined avenues, and peaceful residential feel. It’s also close to the buzz of the CBD. “It feels like living in a European city, rather than suburbia,” says long-time resident Mel Hagen. “We’re really close to everything, within walking distance of the CBD down Government Avenue, and the MyCiTi bus operates out of the Gardens Station if you want to go further afield.”

Small and intimate with a village feel, Gardens Shopping Centre has a wonderful selection of shops and boutiques including La Crémerie specialist cheese shop, Raith Gourmet,

and Cassis for tempting patisserie and macarons. De Waal Park is a community hub bridging Gardens and Oranjezicht – a place for dog-walkers, runners, and kids to enjoy green space and another lovely view of the mountain. Free summer concerts, a Victorian bandstand where you might find Run Rabbit Run Coffee Roastery on a Sunday, and a lawn tennis club, all add to the appeal. Another green paradise is the Oranjezicht City Farm next to Homestead Park, a thriving vegetable garden supplying the market of the same name, where locals can volunteer, or just visit and wander through the paths between beds of flowers and organic veggies.

While the suburb itself only has a sprinkling of cafes and restaurants within its borders, nearby Kloof Street has a huge variety of foodie destinations. Wembley Square’s cafes and Virgin Active gym are just over the road, and the whole of the CBD is on your doorstep.

Q: What can buyers expect to pay for property?

A: The beautiful residential area of Oranjezicht, with its historical houses and tree-lined avenues, remains in high demand. This is a perfect area for families and young professionals as it offers easy access to the CBD and is close to amenities like Gardens Shopping Centre and Wembley Square. Premier schools – Herzlia, St Cyprians, and Stepping Stones Montessori – is in close proximity which, in turn, drives demand for families to reside close by. The starting price for freehold homes is around R5m, which will buy you an older, unrenovated house. Prices increase to around R25m on the upper slopes for beautiful, lavish homes.
