SUPERSTARS

Vol. XIX No. 9

Dear Scintillating Superstars,

If you only had five minutes, what one

question would you like to ask me about my

business or how to start a MK business? I

don’t know if you enrolled your clients in this

$100 contest, but some of the questions I’ve

been asked have been thought provoking. I

love answering them!

Last night a lady asked, “Do you ever

“get tired” of doing what you do?” I had to

laugh. This week, I got a

phone call from a lady who

wanted four cream to powder

beige 3 foundations for her

collie. Sammy, an AKC

registered show dog, is the

first dog I’ve had as a client in

20 years. “Not tired yet.”

Tomorrow, the Houston

Area Directors are flying me

into their city to do a

consultant Star event and

then be a speaker at a guest

event. I feel like a MK

celebrity. “Not tired yet.” At

a new consultant debut, I

walked into the kitchen to see

Gretchen, who lived 2 houses

down from me while I was growing up. We

went to kindergarten together in Streator,

IL, and I hadn’t seen her for at least 10 years.

She was a quilting buddy of my new

consultant. “Not tired yet.” In the next

couple days, our unit will finish up the

$650,000 unit club, and we’ll be a 7 time trip

taking unit. That means Reed and I will be

headed for Rome in September. Nope, “not

tired” of doing what I do yet!

On Tuesday, 9 women graduated from

our first Pink Boot Camp which will be im-

plemented as a part of New Consultant

training.

As they stood proudly, with family

members snapping pictures, I presented

them with dog tags, a diploma and a cd

that will remind them their MK “climb”

has just begun. Their Dream Books

were on display, and as one consultant

presented her book, tears came to my

eyes as she showed a picture of Disney

World. She said, “This picture is not a

dream I have for my family. It’s a

reminder that we couldn’t go to Florida

this year when my parents

celebrated their 40th

anniversary there. We felt

we couldn’t afford it, and I

WILL NEVER have that

happen again. My MK will

allow me to work for

whatever I want for my

family.

And that’s why the

Miley Cyrus CD we

presented to the graduates

is so suitable. She sings

that there are “gonna be”

struggles. She says life is an

uphill climb. She says the

voice inside your head

makes you wonder if you can do it. She

insists you have to keep on trying and

keep your head held high because

there’s always “gonna be” another

mountain. She lets us know loud and

clear, that it isn’t about how long it

takes. What we have to remember is to

enjoy the climb. I hope each and every

one of you will use your Mary Kay

business to help you in your life’s

struggles, and I hope you enjoy your MK

climb as much as I enjoy mine.

THIS MONTH’S ISSUE OF:

IF SHE CAN, I CAN! Each month I will feature a different Future Martin Area Director in our newsletter.

Directors have all gone through many of the same issues that you have or may go through in your life and career.

I know if she can… YOU can. I hope you enjoy our new monthly article.

Director Name: Amy Kemp

Former Occupation: High School English Teacher & Coach

City/State: Bourbonnais, IL

Joined Mary Kay: 1995—On my 18th Birthday. REALLY started working in Nov. 2001

Debuted as a director: June 2003

# of months of driving free: 78—Wow! Almost SEVEN YEARS!!

Highest commission check in one month: $12,896.45

What was the sequence of events that brought you into the company (recruiting layering

process)?

Although I did grow up in a Mary Kay home and watched my mom build her business, I needed to get a good dose of the real world before I was ready to really grasp the opportunity. After having a less than encouraging principal in my former teaching position and feeling a constant frustration about our finances, I called my mom and said, “Let’s meet for dinner.” I then told her I was ready to start my Mary Kay business. She was shocked to say the least!

Why did you join?

A few reasons really. First, I needed an extra source of income. I knew that Ryan’s private school teaching salary and my teaching salary weren’t ever going to grow exponentially, and I was tired of making just enough money to pay the bills. I also desperately missed being in the college atmosphere, surrounded by my girlfriends and by people who challenged me to grow. Finally, I was bored with the day-to-day routine of a “normal life.” Getting up and going to work every day, living for weekends and breaks scared me to death. I didn’t want to “fall asleep” and miss out on life! I wanted a challenge and something more for me to do while Ryan was coaching too.

Why did you want to be a director?

I love seeing women join our business, insecure and scared, and then watching the process of building this business change them. I love life change, and helping people through that process. I saw directorship as an opportunity for me to really get to do this. I also was a “next step” girl always. I just did whatever was the next challenge, the next position on the career ladder, the next thing that seemed logical!

Page 11: May Newsletter Results

Page 11

Has there been a dark season in your Mary Kay career?

Absolutely. Probably the worst year of my business thus far was my first year of

directorship. I had built my business on lots of charisma and belief in Mary Kay, not on the strong foundation of the skin care class. I recruited many of my customers to build my unit, and found myself lacking the skills I needed to rebuild that customer base and to find new consultants. We also desperately needed money. I was living in fear, and I lost confidence in myself. I had a new screaming baby and had NO IDEA how difficult that would be.

I do remember several turning points that pulled me out of that place of scarcity and fear. First, I remember waking up one day, and no longer allowing myself to think about our lack of money or about what I wasn’t doing. I would literally talk out loud to myself. I only

allowed myself to think about the bookings I would get, about the skills I would learn, the money I would earn, not about what I wasn’t doing. I got really serious about listening to my affirmations many times a day. I also attended National Sales Director Linda Toupin’s Director Boot Camp, and I LOVED the security of a check list, of someone telling me what to do and giving me homework. After attending boot camp in the fall and implementing what she had taught, we earned our first Cadillac the next June.

What is the one thing that was difficult for you or you were afraid of in this

business? Learning the skill of booking from my appointments was so frustrating. I

resisted it for so long and tried to do things “my way.” I was always feeling like I was “out of names” to call until I really committed to learning this skill.

During what time period did you have the greatest growth of income and what was the growth? The year I quit teaching, and we did our first $500,000 unit club, my income more than tripled. My Mary Kay business had earned just under $20,000 the year I

debuted as a sales director, and the next year, it was over $65,000. The next year, it was $100,000 and I got to celebrate being a “six-figure woman” for the first time!

What do you attribute the growth? I got a schedule with adequate child care so that I had time to work and THINK without Avery interrupting me constantly. I also hired great adult office help that freed me up to work on things that created income. II wasn’t just reacting to things that

happened; I was creating new business. At the same time, I really rebuilt my customer base, this time through the venue of the skin care class, and my new team members then held classes. It snowballed and the momentum grew as our unit size grew.

What advice would you give a consultant that wants to be a Director? Master the skin care class—every single part of it. Learn to coach and preprofile, use your flip chart, book from those classes, build groups of customers, THEN recruit from them. It may take a little longer, but you’ll be so glad you built a strong base of working consultants. Also, you MUST have office help before becoming a director so you know how to have office help! This is a learned skill. So many consultants and directors get stuck because they try to do it all on their own! This is the most rewarding career, but also one of the most challenging if you head into it with this mindset. I LOVE what I do. I LOVE the life we have created because of what I do. Take a leap of faith, and BUILD this business. You’ll never dream of what will happen because you do.

My Dream Corner…

My dream is that in June 2010 we will be finishing up a

National Area. That would mean at least 12 new

directors will be debuting in this next year. That would

mean dozens of car drivers will be pulling up to be

captured in a picture that will give you chills. That would

mean the dreams of you and I will be coming to fruition.

And, while doing it all, I hope we enjoyed the climb!
