She has over 20 years' experience in the field of equipment lease financing as founder and manager of two equipment leasing companies. Her client list includes AT & T, Medtronic, 3M, State of Minnesota, NCR , Cargill, Federal Reserve Bank, Carmichael-Lynch, Mar-tin/Williams Advertising, KARE-TV, WCCO-TV and Concordia College. Lynne is involved volunteering in local theater and CTV North Suburbs. She enjoys travel and serves up a competitive tennis game.
Lori Wightman has been the president of Unity Hospital in Fridley since January 1, 2011. Prior to that she was the president at New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm, Minnesota for more than eight years.
Lori Wightman is a registered nurse with a master's in health care administration from University of Colorado. Active in the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), Wightman has served as regent for Minnesota and currently is a governor on the Board of Governors for the College.
Wightman guided several important building renovations and service expansions that were financed largely by successful community fundraising campaigns, and she established a satellite clinic in Winthrop, Minn. She was instrumental in developing and obtaining federal funding for the Heart of New Ulm, a groundbreaking health initiative with the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation and Allina’s Center for Innovation.
Wightman has a varied background that includes having held positions as a health care consultant, building project coordinator, governor campaign manager, and general manager of a professional basketball team.
I’ve previously written about change in a recent newsletter, so this time I am going to write about surrounding yourself with great people. What I love most about the Chamber is working with all of the great people who are committed to making the Twin Cities North a better place to work, live and play.
We have recently added two fantastic people into the mix to help us complete our mission. Lori Wightman joined the Board of Directors on July 1st. She recently moved to the area from New Ulm, where she served on the New Ulm Chamber Board. She barely finished unpacking before committing to serve on the Twin Cities North Board.
Lynne Vannelli is our recent hire within the Chamber. She will join Shari in trying to increase our membership. She brings a background full of sales experience.
Join me in welcoming these two at the next event you are at! Tim Roche

Vikings Stadium Will the debate over public subsidies for
sports stadiums ever end? Minnesotans have been
debating taxpayer-funded stadium construction for
nearly 20 years.
Target Center opened in 1990, Xcel Energy
Center in 2000, TCF Field in 2009, and Target
Field just last year. Funding was hotly debated but
one thing is certain; Minnesotans got their
money’s worth. ESPN named Xcel the best overall
sports venue in the U.S. in 2004. The Wild sold
out every ticket for more than a decade and set
attendance records for the boys hockey tourna-
ment, the NHL All-star Game, a WCHA final
five tournament, and a Shania Twain concert. TCF
Stadium draws sell-out crowds and in 2010 ESPN,
The Magazine called Target Field the #1 stadium
experience in the entire country.
Public funding for sports stadiums may be debatable, but few can argue that Minnesotans have received a nice return on their investments.
For Arden Hills, the north metro, and Ramsey County, the sports complex proposed for the abandoned and deteriorating army ammunitions
property promises similar economic development success. The Vikings expect to relocate their entire operation from Eden Prairie to the complex
at Arden Hills and owner Ziggy Wilf envisions additional development in the area that will bring new, well-paying jobs to our community.
As part of the sports complex development, MnDOT is projecting $132 million of road and transportation system improvements. Past efforts
to increase the capacity and safety of the I-35W corridor in the north metro have fallen on deaf ears. The stadium project will finally bring much
needed highway improvements. For many employers, quality transportation systems are required when selecting a site to locate new facilities.
What if the project doesn’t happen? Some may worry about the Vikings’ threat to leave Minnesota, but the real tragedy will be the loss of
economic development. Without this project, a huge plot of open and developable land just 10 minutes from both downtowns is likely to remain a
vacant, deteriorating blight on the land for another 20 years. The loss of this project would be a loss not only for Arden Hills, but for all of Ramsey
County.
The Twin Cities North Chamber of Commerce shares the concerns of our members, taxpayers, and the greater Ramsey County community
over spending public dollars to subsidize private business. We also support and promote economic development that generates good paying jobs
and supports a wide variety of businesses. We support the development of the sports complex project, not because it will keep a professional
sports team in Minnesota, but because north metro communities will benefit from the construction activity it will generate, the out of town visitors
it will attract, and the national recognition bringing new businesses to the area.
Exactly how the project will be funded remains a concern. Similar projects in the two downtowns have demonstrated that a public
contribution coupled with a large private investment and local support is a winning combination. Five years from now we could be celebrating the
reports naming the latest sports complex in Minnesota the best family sporting experience in the country. Most importantly, this project will be the
economic engine that jump starts economic development in the north metro.
Ultimately, there will be an economic line where the final project will be a positive or a negative for the area. The Chamber will continue to
research this final number and will hold our elected officials accountable to be good stewards of our tax dollars as they work out the financing de-
tails for this project. In the mean time, while much has been publicized about the negatives of this project, we ask all citizens of Ramsey County to
recognize the economic benefits of the sports complex and to contact your local legislators to discuss the positives this development could mean to
the area.
The Twin Cities North Chamber of Commerce represents over 400 businesses in Arden Hills and the surrounding area, advocating for a
stronger economy.
Article written by Tim Roche, President of the Twin Cities North Chamber of Commerce; and Bill Gschwind of Alden Pearson, P.A., Chair of the Chambers Public
Policy Committee.
Business Advocacy
My name is Bill Gschwind and I am a business attorney with Alden Pearson, P.A. I’ve been a member of the Twin Cities Chamber of Commerce since 2007 and am the new chair of the Public Policy Committee. In the 27 years before earning my law degree in 2009, I owned and operated inPURSUIT Consulting, Bill’s Rental Center, and held sales and sales management positions for medical equipment manufacturers, medical supply distributors, and home improvement companies in and around the Twin Cities. As a firm believer in free-market capitalism, I am excited to have an opportunity to work with a group of people who believe that the role of a chamber of commerce is to advocate on behalf of private business, including Pat Whalen, PJW Automotive; Bev Aplikowski, Lakeside Homes; Bob Benke, Community Resource Partnerships, Inc.; Tom Sanvick, F&M Bank; Tonia Wagner, Bio Life; Avonelle Lovhaug, Code Poetry Software; Greg McAllister, Residential Reformation; Ted Landwehr, Landwehr Law Office; Eric Olson, ELO, Inc.; Mike Simpson, Premier Commercial Properties; and Chris DeLaForest, DeLaForest Consulting, LLC. Networking is also an important function of a chamber. The best networking results when we work together toward a common goal. The past four years serving on the Public Policy Committee have given me an opportunity to get involved with a great group of dedicated people and build real friendships. The purpose of the Public Policy Committee is to proactively address issues that affect member businesses by communicating with local, county, and state elected officials about the concerns of our members. Our efforts have contributed to stopping franchise fees on utility bills and stopping an annual registration and fee for businesses and vacant buildings. We are currently working with Ramsey County and the Vikings on the stadium project proposed for Arden Hills to make certain that the concerns of our members about funding and handling large numbers of visitors are addressed. By far our most ambitious project is the Legislative Breakfast. Started in 2009, the breakfasts create opportunities for Chamber members to network, meet public policy leaders, and stay informed. Business leaders meet and mingle over a wonderful breakfast feast (this is not your typical scrambled eggs and limp bacon affair!) before settling in to a robust discussion of the issues they deal with everyday. Topics include health care, transportation, education, regulations, and budgeting. Speakers have included Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Rep. Michele Bachmann, Rep. Jim Ramstad, Sen. Skip Humphrey, and political commentators Blois Olson and Sarah Janecek. I want to thank Tim Roche and the members of the committee for giving me the opportunity to chair the Public Policy Committee. We are not a political group but rather a collection of diverse opinions working together on common sense solutions that help businesses grow. We meet at the Chamber office on the first Thursday of each month from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. Check us out, won’t you? Bill Gschwind is an attorney and business advisor with the law firm of Alden Pearson, P.A. He can be reached at 651-224-9000 or by email at [email protected].
