From the Baron and Baroness

Greetings to the wonderful populace of our faire Bright Hills, We think we may have fully recovered from the ravages of the dreaded zombie snow bunnies. Thank goodness we were so well defended by our martial forces that kept them at bay while the populace practiced their craft in song, poetry arts and cooking. Our visiting guests were well pleased with the bounty that is Bright Hills. There is much to do in the coming months, for the event season is beckoning us onward and outward to continue to show the known world what a great and marvelous people we have here in our barony. Unfortunately we had to inform His Majesty that we would not be attending his Crown tourney. If anyone from the Barony is attending, we wish you a safe journey and look forward in hearing details from you on your return. So we will start our event schedule with the upcoming demo at the Steppingstone Museum. This is a two day event that is a major demo in support of the museum. There will be a lot of activities, so come out and enjoy the day with us. We also hope to select new Heavy and Equestrian Champions at this demo/event, so we hope to see you all there to cheer on the competitors. The rest of our planned schedule for the next two months is as follows: May 10-11 Steppingstone Medieval Days Demo May 17 Arcadia Demo, Arcadia MD May 23-25 Ruby Joust May 31-June 1 Garb Wars June 7-8 Highland River Melees June 21-22 Her Excellency and I will be splitting ourselves between: Old School War Practice Baron Kollack Trial by Fire Baroness Rebecca June 27-29 Storvik Novice and Unbelt Tourney Both Rebecca and I look forward to meeting and working with each and every one of you in the coming future. We are each available to discuss queries or concerns. You can reach us via email at the addresses noted on the baronial website, call us if the need arises or pull us to the side at an event/demo or practice if you so desire. Kollack and Rebecca Baron and Baroness of Bright Hills

From the Chronicler Happy 49th Birthday to the SCA. How the time has flown. How this organization has grown from a backyard party to international membership. When I joined the SCA 37 years ago, there were 6 kingdoms. Now there are 19. Atlantia was then a principality. Many of our SCA legends where then just making a name for themselves. The Known World was a very different place. I would like to extend my own hardy “Welcome” to our new baron and baroness. I look forward to working with you. I also want to extend a heart-felt “Thank You” to our outgoing coronets. I appreciated working with you and the good counsel that you gave me. The month of May is very busy starting with Crown Tourney this weekend and ending with the revival of Garb Wars. I hope to see my fellow Bright Hilleans at the Stepping Stone demo on the 9th-11th and at Garb Wars. We have a beautiful newsletter this month thanks to Lord Janyn, Lady Meleri, Lady Wanda and the members of the guild. Thank you for your contributions and for your continued faith in me as your chronicler. THL Sindara Lind Rachael Fessel of the Falconshield Chronicler of the Barony Bright Hills

I. Officer Reports (by e-mail)

A. Chronicler: THL Sindara Lind Rachael Fessel of the

Falconshield – I have a full newsletter this month. Lord Janyn has sent me an article on casting, Lady Meleri has provided her winning sonnet, Lady Aemelia Rosa is supplying the cover art and Lady Wanda has provided some lovely pictures. I plan to pull a recipe from the Cooks’ Guild archives for our recipe section. The Kingdom Chronicler complimented the length of the March newsletter. At the next officers meeting I hope to introduce my new deputy.

B. Herald: Lady Beatrice Sherwood - Hear now the events which unfolded during the final Court of Their

Excellencies Chirhart and Jeanne, late of Bright Hills, now once Baron and Baroness of the Court of Atlantia! Upon His Majesty's command, Their Excellencies did open Court and address those assembled, bidding them welcome. Having yet a few pieces of business to attend to before stepping down, Their Excellencies first called forth Elizabeth of Sumerston, and awarded her the Order of Tessa, for her contributions as a newcomer to the Barony. Their Excellencies did next summon Lord Stephan of Churchton. Noting his numerous martial contributions, and willingness to instruct others in the fighting arts, Their Excellencies saw fit to award Lord Stephan the Order of the Silberberg. Next did Their Excellencies call Lord Rhys of Ravenhill to come before them. Lord Rhys has long served Their Excellencies, the Barony, and the fair Kingdom of Atlantia, and for these services Their Excellencies inducted him into the Order of Job. Their Excellencies called for Faolan mac Raghnaill to present himself, but that gentle was not to be found. As it was Their final Court, Their Excellencies explained that Faolan, too, was to be awarded a Tessa, for his willingness to help

out, and the initiative he had shown in working toward starting a hound-coursing group within the Barony. Faolan was later tracked down and presented with his scroll by both sets of Coronets, after extricating himself from a potentially messy situation involving a great wagonload of bees, but that was not part of this Court, so this humble herald begs indulgence for her digression. Their Excellencies did next summon forth the Autocrat, Chagan Khulan Baghsi, who enumerated the various competitions and diversions to be held throughout the day, and wished those assembled a most pleasurable event. Their Excellencies asked that Lord Graham Mac Robert come before them. Praising the grace and leadership with which Lord Graham had steered the Barony these last few months, through what at times were stormy waters indeed, Their Excellencies saw fit to present him with the Baronial Award of Excellence. Next did Their Excellencies call forth three good gentles: Lady Daniela Schwartzhaupt, Lady Ingeborg i Trondheim, and Lady Reyne Telarius. Citing the long and dedicated service each of these ladies had given the Barony, Their Excellencies explained that the Order of Saint Barbara had voted to include all three in their ranks, and so Their Excellencies did induct each in her turn into that Order. Their Excellencies did then summon Lord Magnus MacTaggart into Their presence. That gentle did approach with much jingling from the magnificent coat of mail he was wearing, and was presented by His Excellency with a small wooden box. His Excellency explained that the chains Lord Magnus had given Their Excellencies to be distributed with various awards had run out, and so he had to return the empty box. Lord Magnus, however, noted that there still seemed to be something in the box--but not for Their Excellencies. Removing two items from the box, he presented them to His Majesty--one in Atlantia's colors, and one in His Majesty's own colors. As the box was now truly almost-empty, Lord Magnus retired from Court, to seek who the final chain might be for. At this point, having no further business, Their Excellencies asked a boon of His Majesty, that they be allowed to step down, that others might serve Kingdom and Barony in their stead. That boon having been granted, herein ends my account. Herein lies an account of the first court of Their Excellencies Kollack and Rebecca, Baron and Baroness of Bright Hills. After swearing Their oaths of fealty to the Crown, Their Excellencies were given leave by His Majesty to conduct what business they would. Firstly did Their Excellencies call forth the officers of the Barony, to request the support, good counsel, and guidance of those gentles, in tending to the needs of the populace. The officers of Bright Hills did give their collective word, and returned to their places. Their Excellencies next called upon the Champions who had so steadfastly served Their predecessors. Each champion in turn did pledge his or her intent to serve the new Coronets until such time as new Champions were to be chosen. Each champion in turn was presented once more with the regalia of his or her discipline, and all took their place behind Their Excellencies, to serve as needed. Next did Their Excellencies summon Lord Seamus McRay to present himself before Them. His Excellency Kollack explained to the populace that, by tradition, the Baronial War Lord is chosen from among those who fight with heavy arms, in close combat. However, it was the will of Their Excellencies that all martial disciplines should be recognized in these Bright Hills. As an archer Lord Seamus has proven himself a force to be reckoned with on the field, and is able to see more of the field of combat than those on the front lines. Thus was it Their Excellencies desire to have him serve as Baronial War Lord, with deputies in each discipline to assist in continuing the reputation of Bright Hills' warriors as an effective fighting force. Lord Seamus accepted the position. Finally, Their Excellencies announced that They would be sitting in state during the lunch hour, for any who wished to offer greetings or counsel. This having been said, Their Excellencies closed Court, Herein ends my account.

C. Webminster: Lord Janyn Fletcher of Lancastreschire – I will be asking the Barony to support a purchase of a software package to support custom themes and artwork generation for the move of our Baronial website from its current software to Wordpress in the next month or so at our next regular meeting. I can not proceed without this software package. I have prepared the current web site for the move to WP and will start as soon as I have the themes and art ready. This move puts us in compliance with the Kingdom guidance and will allow real-time editing of the website from any location. It also allows the site to scale to whatever device it is being viewed from, desktop, laptop, ipad or mobile device.

D. MOAS: Lady Reyne Telerius - For Bright Hills Investiture - A&S report Displayed - 11 people displayed their arts Competition - 7 people entered into the 'New Beginnings' Competition. This competition was judged by both outgoing and incoming Coronets. First place was awarded to Stephan Grimm, of Stierbach, for his Viking Bone Comb. Second Place was awarded to Godai Katsunaga for his Japanese Hanko (name stamps/seals).

E. Chatelaine: Lady Ingeborg i Trondheim – I sent my Quarter 1 report to the kingdom chatelaine on time (barely). I continue to have email correspondence with folks who are interested in or are moving here from another SCA group. And for a Huge Demo report: I am trying to get current information on all that is requested during our presence at Balticon, the Huge-ist SF con to be found from NYC to Chicago.

Another huge demo: The Colorus Blast (East Kingdom) is coming. 1000s of tourists. The East requests our help.

Another demo: July 12 at Rabbit Hill Winery. The SCA lady there requests our help for a Saturday demo. She offers a bottle of wine and lunch to all SCA demonstrators. I am corresponding with newcomers by email encouraging and hoping they find time to come to Fighter Practice or events. I am working on details for our demo at Balticon (over Memorial Day weekend), and I'm wondering what we want to do with a few new requests sent to us. Colorus Blast is another demo coming soon--talk to Baron Kollack and Baroness Rebecca about this giant event in East Kingdom if you wish to help that demo.

F. Youth Minister: Lady Wynne ferch Rhodri - We had 17 children participate in the children's activities for Bright Hills Investiture. The first activity was to decorate paper bags for the egg hunt. Prior to beginning the hunt, the children chose special eggs with four of them containing stones indicating a special prize provided by Baron Kollack and Baroness Rebecca. The hunt was a great success and even those arriving late were able to collect a few eggs. The children then decorated egg-shaped cookies for the feast desert table later that night.

I want to thank, Lord Stephan, his son Cyrus, Aye and Alicia for their help in hiding eggs and assisting me in general round-up. There were a few mothers in attendance as well and I am grateful for their help as well!

On another note, I have received permission to borrow pipe and drape for use as a backdrop from the Baltimore Science Fiction Club. If this is acceptable I will set up a time to pick up 4 curtains, 3 horizontal poles and 4 vertical poles and plates. I am not sure if there is a rental charge but will find out before Friday.

G. Knight’s Marshall: Lord Janyn Fletcher of Lancastreschire - I have submitted the first quarter Knights Marshal report for Bright Hills to the Kingdom. Just a reminder to all of our marshals that waivers are required for heavy and rapier practices for non members and minors. Please if you are the marshal running a practice, make sure you check participants and get signed waivers for those that require it. I will need those waivers to submit to the Kingdom so please make sure I am aware of them.

II. Old Business 1. Autocrat’s report from Baronial Investiture. Autocrat of Baronial Investiture Event Report: On April 19th, A.S. 48 (2014) the Barony of Bright Hills held its seventh Investiture. The site was Steppingstone Museum, a part of the Susquehanna State Park, near Havre de Grace, MD. His Majesty, Guillaume Tomas le Lou , called William, held several Courts. The first Court granted Their Excellencies, Chirhart Blackstar and Jeanne Tenneur de Bec, their request to retire and concluded with the investiture of Lord Kollack von Zweckle and Lady Rebecca von Zweckle as our 7th Coronets of Bright Hills.

Besides courts there were numerous other activities, including Heavy weapons melee tourneys, Rapier Tourneys and a great deal of Archery shoots. A very nice A & S display as well as a "New Beginnings" competition of first time arts filled the end of the carriage barn. During the day the Carriage barn was also filled with the sounds of music and singing, story telling and other Bardic delights. Outside the children hunted Easter Eggs and reveled in the warmth of a sunny Spring day. We had a number of merchants, a hearty lunch provided by the folks of Spiaggia Levantina, their first fundraiser. A class for aspiring Exchequers was also held. As far as I could tell the event attendees were all relaxed and having a good time. As time drew nigh for the evening's feast we had a bit of excitement when our power for the carriage barn, and thus the Cooks activities, was shut off, the source being attacked by a large black beast. We were rescued quickly and power was returned so that the feast, only mildly behind schedule did commence. All in all a beautiful day. Our attendees numbered 188 - that count including even the babes in arms. 35 dedicated archers worked tirelessly to fend off the encroaching Zombie Snow Bunnies, while 17 Heavy fighters and an unknown number of fencers fought face to face with those few creatures that made it past the archers. Awesome is the power of Bright Hills combined forces. Our coffers will be somewhat heavier for our new Coronets and the auspicious weather bodes well for their reign. It was a good day.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Spring Crown Tournament

May 02- 04, 2014

Kingdom of Atlantia O! for a Muse of fire, that would ascend the brightest heaven of invention! A kingdom for a stage, princes to act and monarchs to behold the swelling scene. Let all the peoples of Atlantia stoke a fire in their own hearts and come together to witness firsthand the pageantry and suspense unique to Crown Tournament. Noble Atlantian fighters will cross swords upon the fields of Agincourt until only one remains. Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood, disguise fair nature with hard-favored rage; then lend the eye a terrible aspect and claim the throne of Atlantia! Website: crown.atlantia.sca.org Martial Activities: THE TOURNAMENT: But when the blast of war blows in our ears, then imitate the action of the tiger. Nothing matches the pageantry and pomp of a Crown Tournament! His Royal Majesty, King William, commands that the tourney format shall be a double elimination wherein the fighters will bring their best weapons style. The final round of the tournament will be best 2 out 3, still bringing your best. Then call we this the field of Agincourt. For information about reserving field space for the Tournament (space is limited and contestants receive priority), please contact Lord Vincenzo d'Este (Bradley Mills, 704-314-6240; vincenzo.de.este@gmail) Arts & Sciences Activities: THE ARTS AND LEISURE: In peace there's nothing so becomes a man as modest stillness and humility. In honor of Crispin Crispianus, upon whose feast day Agincourt was fought, the A&S themes will be Leather, Largesse, Look and Listen, with prizes awarded for Leather-worked items, the largesse items, heraldic display, and processional pomp. The largesse competition is a Dirty Dozen Donation Derby! Items should be blue and/or white. Entrants create 12 items suitable for largesse, such as 12 needle books, or 12 hats, or 12 rings. Items need not be documented. Judging will be done by the beads method. Members of the populace will vote for their favorite entry! You may enter more than once! (Note: two entries means 24 items). The winner of the competition is the gentle with the most beads in their cup and they receive one item from each of the other entries. So 12 entries means the winner gets 11 prizes! The remaining items entered into the competition w ill be donated to Their Majesties as largesse. The game’s afoot! While all attention falls to the Crown contest for the finals, there will be a wide variety of pastimes throughout the event up until then, including croquet, bocce, quoits, and kubb. The Artisans’ Cabinet

Pewter casting in the middle Ages and Now

By Janyn Fletcher of Lancastreschire Pewter is an extremely adaptable and versatile material capable of being formed by a number of different

processes. Apart from in England and the United States, most pewter is still produced by casting, the technique

originally introduced by the Romans. Some Roman limestone molds have survived but there is no evidence of

their using metal molds. Pewter is a wonderful metal with a long history. The origin of the word Pewter is not fully known, but it is probably an

English modification of the word spelter. It was adopted with only slight variation by most of the continental European

nations. At an early period Europeans became very fond of pewter wares. The word pewter became peauter in Dutch,

peutre, peautre or piautre in French, peltro in Italian and peltre in Spanish. Roman pewter, the oldest known, which has

been uncovered at various sites in England and elsewhere, was composed of tin and lead alone. Occasional traces of

iron are believed to be accidental. Pewter is often thought as a cheap substitute for Sterling silver but this it is not. Pewter is a splendid metal with its own

merits and qualities that make it a fine precious metal for both decorative and practical applications. Pewter historically

was an alloy of *tin and lead (up to 50% Pb). It became popular in kitchen ware such as plates, mugs, and utensils. By

the mid-1700s the health hazards and tarnishing drawbacks of leaded pewter helped popularize Britannia metal a non-

leaded form of pewter. Britannia metal consists of* tin, *antimony, and *copper. Pewter is a general name used to

denote a number of alloys of various metals in diverse proportions, the sole common feature of which lies in the fact that

tin is always the chief constituent. Tin (Sn) is a relatively soft and ductile metal with a silvery white color. It has a

density of 7.29 grams per cubic centimeter, a low melting point of (449.38° F), and a high boiling point of (657° F).

Pewter ware was originally fashioned in two ways, by hammering or by casting, and the workers in each were strictly differentiated, the former, who worked in fine pewter, being known as Sadware men, the latter who used “ley” as Hollow-ware men. A third class, known as Triflers, from the alloy they were limited to, probably at first only manufactured such small articles of domestic use or ornament as did not definitely fall under either of the other headings, but from an authorized list of wares, drawn up by a committee of Trillers in 1612, it is clear that the barrier between them and the Hollowware men had been largely broken down. Another method of working pewter which seems to have been introduced later, and never followed to any great extent, was spinning, by which the vessel was shaped in a mold on a wheel by the mere pressure of a blunt tool, the softness of the metal allowing it to flow

Page 15: May 2014 Yeoman - Barony of Bright Hillsbrighthills.atlantia.sca.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/...We think we may have fully recovered from the ravages of the dreaded zombie snow

15

sufficiently for this purpose. Today pewter spinning is employed by many major craftsman and manufacturers.

Pewter first appears in western recorded history in 1074, when a synod at Rouer permitted its use as a substitute for gold

or silver in church vessels a concession accepted also at Winchester two years later, again withdrawn in 1175, but once

more adopted some twenty years after. The records of its domestic use commence with caldrons employed for boiling

the meat at the coronation of Edward I. in 1274, though we gather that the trade was even then flourishing in Paris and

Bruges, during the following century it extended to Augsburg, Nuremberg, Poitiers, Moos and other continental centers.

Confined at first to the more wealthy classes, we can trace the use of pewter as time goes on its extension lower and

lower in the social scale, until at the end of the 17th century its use was almost universal. From then on its vogue

steadily declined when the growing cheapness of glass and chinaware and the invention of more showy metals brought

upon it by degrees the fatal stigma of vulgarity. I am focusing on gravity casting for the purpose of this paper. From the thirteenth century most molds were made of

bronze although as late as the fifteenth century soapstone (steatite) molds were also used for small items such as

pilgrim badges. The techniques of bronze casting had long been established and the metal is ideally suited to the needs

of the pewterer with its good heat transfer and cooling quickly in normal atmosphere and is extremely durable. Some

English pewterers are still using bronze molds that have been in regular use for well over a hundred years. Today,

with the improvements in machining facilities, steel molds are more generally used, although the principles of casting

are exactly the same. In gravity casting the molten metal is poured into the top of the mold, which fills through normal gravitational force.

Molds are often made up of several parts which when assembled, will provide a wall to the casting providing a resist to

the molten metal except where the casting is required. Molds are typically made in one piece, two piece and three piece

molds depending on the type of casting required.

My Process

I start by preparing the mold. I typically will use soapstone or African Wonderstone for my molds. I cut the soapstone to

the proper size for the piece I am casting and then will prepare the surface of the stone. The stone needs to be

completely flat to not allow any spaces between the pieces. This is accomplished by sanding the face of each piece with

sandpaper. I start with 150 grit and work up to 220 grit. Once the stone is ready you can check it by wetting the face of

the stone and putting the 2 pieces together. If you can lift the two pieces and they don’t separate, this face of the stone is

ready for

casting.

Once the stone is prepared, I next move on to the process of carving the

piece to be cast into the stone. To accomplish this task you can use

everything from a nail, dental picks, carving tools and dremel bits as well.

Here is an example of what the stone looks like after preparation on the

right. The little “nibs” are called “registration of the mold” these are used to

assure the mold is properly aligned for pieces that have an image on the

front and the back. Once the stone is prepared, the next step is to transfer the image to the

stone. I use a process called “pin dot” to transfer the image to the stone for

more complicated images. First you trace the image on tracing paper, and

then punch little holes around the outside of the image, then place the

tracing paper over the stone and simply trace the holes with a sharpie

marker. Here is an example of what the “pin dot” transfer method looks like

after the image is transferred.

Page 16: May 2014 Yeoman - Barony of Bright Hillsbrighthills.atlantia.sca.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/...We think we may have fully recovered from the ravages of the dreaded zombie snow

16

Once the image outline is transferred it is time to start carving your mold.

This step takes the most amount of time and you need to be very careful, if

you go too deeply or make one slip with a carving tool, your mold can be

ruined and you will have to start all over again. Also you need to think

backwards and upside down depending on the image and if it has lettering.

The mold is opposite of the final piece and has to be drawn backwards of

what your final desired piece will be. So at this point you start to carve the mold. Any tool can be used from as

simple as a nail to dental picks, stone carving tools, dremel bits and

whatever you feel works best. I tend to use tools that I have custom

sharpened and feel best to me. Go slowly and check your work, I use silly

putty to show me how the carving is progressing. Here is an example of

how silly putty shows how your work is progressing.

Once the image is completely carved and you assure your mold is clean and

there is no overhangs in the mold, you are ready to add the vent lines and

the funnel area where you will pour the molten metal, this is called a

“Sprue.” The size of the sprue is also important because if it is too big it

will allow the metal to gas and cause the piece to become cloudy due to the

excessive heat. The most concentrated heat will be right in line with the

sprue because of the concentration of metal in that area. Here is what the

mold looks like with the sprue and vent lines. The vent lines are very

functional and not just for looks, for some small pieces they are essential

for proper pouring of your piece. Also adding vent lines on the back side of

the mold might be required. I like the look for some pieces and others

might not require them.

At this point you are ready to pour. Heat the pewter to proper temperature

and assure you are wearing all of your protective gear. This includes safety

glasses, thick leather gloves and long pants and shirt with closed leather

shoes. Put the halves of the mold together and I use a metal clamp to hold

them together. Once together, pour the metal into the mold until a bit forms

on top. Let the mold rest for about a minute, you can actually see the

pewter turn from a liquid state to a cloudy solid in roughly 20-30

seconds after pouring. Once poured, open the mold, remove the pour and

repeat as many pieces as you require. As the mold heats over the process

of casting many pieces, it might require some time to cool a bit too

properly pour again. Soapstone molds become more brittle when they

are at the same temperature as the metal for long periods. The last step is cleaning of the piece. How well you did preparing your stone and carving will dictate how much time

you spend cleaning. There will always be some overcast that can be easily removed with diagonal cutters, a file or any

other tools along these lines. You simply cut off the sprue and you can re- melt it for future casting. Casting is a fun and rewarding art and the sky is the limit with creativity. When done correctly and safely you can

make lasting site tokens, bezants or jewelry for garb such as buttons or adornments. For more information on casting

and the process please visit my website for class materials and guides. www.janynfletcher.com
