From the Baron and Baroness

Greetings to the Barony! This weekend past the barony hosted Steppingstone Skirmishes & TNT at the Steppingstone Museum. The weather was a little brisk, due to the wind, but the sun was shining and we saw smiling faces everywhere we looked. It was a lovely day overall, and the activities took full advantage of the facilities at the site. There were classes and competitions, merchants and marshals, a tournament and the baronial archer championship. There was also a feast and singing into the night. It was wonderful to see so many of you enjoying the day . Two of the baronial officers retired: Lady Deirdre O Bardon stepped down as Baronial Herald (although she will continue to assist with field heraldry and consultations), and Lady Beatrice Shirwood assumed the office of Herald, and Lord Godai Katsunaga transferred the office of Baronial Archer Marshal to Lady Nichola Blackwell because he will now be serving as the Kingdom Deputy Earl Marshal for Combat Archery. Lord Dagfinnr will become Lady Nichola's deputy. We thank the outgoing officers for their service, and welcome the new officers. The barony relies on its officers to guide it, and we have been blessed to have such a dedicated and dynamic corps of officers. There were also several championships scheduled for the day. Baron Barre FitzRobert has agreed to serve as the new Baronial Archery Champion. Lord Conrad Muni will continue his service as the Baronial Rapier Champion. Congratulations to them both! We would like to thank Lady Faye for organizing a wonderful event. She and her staff did the barony proud. We also need to thank our retainers for the day. Lady Akiyo helped to organize before retreating to the kitchen to assist Lady Deirdre with the feast. Lord Raven had the duty for most of the day and followed one or both of us around the site, as well as serving us at feast. Lady Ailis retained for us as well. We thank them all for their service and support. Lord Raven also assisted with transporting the baronial "Stuff" to the site and setting up. And there were many who helped us on Sunday as we packed up. To all those who waited for us and helped - Lady Deirdre, Mistress Cordelia, Lady Akiyo, Lady Wynne, Baron Gustav and Lindsey, Lord Llewyllen, Lady Faye, and Joseph - thank you!! We also thank Lord Magnus MacTaggart for presenting us with largess - more chains to use for awards. These are greatly appreciated. And we thank Lady Catriona for providing us with more populace patches. We treasure these and love having them to share with members of the barony! (Note: if you have not received a patch yet, please let us know. We expect to have more to pass out at Baronial Birthday.) And thanks go to all those who presented us with gifts of song, and treats - Lady Scholastica, Baroness Tatiana, Lady Faye, Lady Evelyn, and Natalia. They helped to enliven the evening. In service, we are Chirhart & Jeanne Baron & Baroness

From the Chronicler Thank you to all for the wonderful letters of congratulations for the Yeoman’s Black Fox nominations. It is noce to know how much the baronial populace and the kingdom enjoys our newsletter. And it is truly our newsletter. I am only the Chronicler. Without the contributions of the talented people of Bright Hills, there would not be a newsletter. I need to say a special thank you to Lady Amelia Rosa for allowing me to use her work for this month’s cover and for allowing me access to her archives for future covers. Thank you to Baroness Rowen for Paternoster article, to Mistress Cordelia for her recipe, Lady Katarzyna for poem, Baroness Barbara for her stories of Bright Hills past and present and Lady Wanda for her pictures. This is why I love doing this newsletter. THL Sindara

E. Webminster: Lord Janyn – reports fliers for KASF have been added to the website and updated the flier for TNT as directed by the autocrat. The web page is up to date. I am still waiting for the Scribal Schola information to add to the web page. MOAS: Lady Reyne Telerius - The MOAS report this month is quite short, as almost no guilds have reported in. I am working with Faye on getting the classes for TnT set up. We’ve had basic A&S things happening at FP, but no formal classes have been taught that I have been made aware of. I am hoping to schedule more classes for FP during the winter months.

Many members of the Barony ventured down to the Eastern Shore, and helped Spiaggia Levantina with their annual Furnace Town demo at the Chesapeake Celtic Festival. Much A&S was on display and demonstrated. From the Barony, the following people demo’d their A&S:

• Reyne Telarius – lucet, kumihimo and hand spinning, also taught Lady Eleri how to make a lucet cord

• Sweiczka Kaim – glass bead demo

• Faye de Trees and Evelyn de Trees – hand sewing and bardic

• Richard Wyn – bardic

• Ingeborg I Trondheim – Viking wire weaving, taught several people throughout the weekend

Most of House Wulfshaven was there doing heavy fighting. I don’t have a complete list of names. If I missed anyone from the Barony who attended the demo, I apologize; it wasn’t intentional, just poor memory recall on my part. Please let me know, and I will add it to this report.

Lady Katarzyna entered the poetry competition at WOW and won first place for a war point. Also, Countess Rowan entered the Baronial Champions A&S Competition at WOW, representing the Barony, and came in 3rd place. She entered hand-made amber beads, a replica of the smaller Waterford paternoster and displayed the beginning of her replica of the larger Waterford paternoster.

14. Canton of Green Lion’s Bay A&S: Green Lion Bay - We have started to gather on first Fridays to do an art and or science. We did not meet in November because of schedule conflicts but plan on meeting in December. For our first, First Friday, we were taught beginning crochet by Philipp H. Not period but something simple to wet the appetite. We will be doing a simple garb class in the future..

F. MOL: Lord Alexander Fowler - Alexander reports he will be at TNT and the demo tomorrow. Send him an email if you need your fighter cards.

G. Chatelaine: Lady Ingeborg could not attend but reported on line that her third quarter report was sent in. A good time had by all at demo at Chesapeake Celtic Festival, the first weekend in October. This Saturday is our next demo and TNT will be a demo.

H. Youth Minister: Lady Wynne ferch Rhodri - will have children’s activities at TNT. She is making some cats for a hunt similar to what was done at TNT last year with the owls. Preparing a coloring book for KASF of heraldry, which will be sold as a fundraiser.

I. Knight’s Marshall: Lord Kollack - reports there are 2 new fighters from the Eastern Shore.

J. Chiurgeon: Master Richard - reports that he was CIC at coronation. He will be at TNT.

V. Old Business A. Church Demo: Plans are on target. A few people have dropped out and a few have dropped in. Fighters,

musicians, artisans are planning to attend. B. Celtic Fest Demo: This is next weekend and supports Spiaggia. C. TNT: : Lady Faye sent her report on line as she cannot attend. She sent out the fliers again to many lists

and asked folks to send to additional lists where they were members. The class schedule is coming together and reservations are trickling in, making the cooks nervous for feast headcount. This is always difficult and I sent out additional pleas for folks to send in feast at least ASAP. The weather is looking clear and not too cold but she is planning to allow as much indoor accommodation as possible and we have heaters for the feast hall/ carriage barn. She questioned whether anyone has looked forward to next year yet but with BH hosting Coronation I wonder if we want to hold TNT as well in the same month? Should we look into moving this as a camping event earlier in the year? Just some things to think about. I am not alone in wanting to see our Fall event grow into something like Kingdom Crusades but it seems we need to get back into September if possible. I will do some final advertising this weekend and into next week. As always, feel free to contact Lady Faye at [email protected] or 352-281-8216, I will be busy this Sat with events and mornings next week with school tours but otherwise am free to setup and answer any last minute questions. I am looking forward to a wonderful camping weekend full of classes and bardic and champions and more!

Lady Deirdre added that we need people to sign up for feast or even send an email so that we may get a proper count.

D. KASF: Lady Katarzyna reported that plans are progressing well. She will have a meeting with David Austin, Seneschal of Highland Foorde, on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. There is a list of volunteer positions that she is recruiting for. She shared that list with the group. I will begin advertising as soon.

E. Baronial Birthday: Lady Livia could not attend but reported online that she has a head troll for this event. F. Scribal Schola: Lady Katarzyna spiked the event but it has not shown up yet. Lord Graham approved it.

We are only waiting for Kingdom to put it up. The flyer has been sent to Janyn for the website. We now need to begin recruiting teachers; however, most don’t commit until closer to the event. Whether it is on the kingdom calendar or not the event will proceed. Advertising will be done on line and facebook.

G. Master Richard added that their Majesties need retainers. Please contact him directly. VII. New Business

A. Mistress Chagan presented a proposal from Spiaggia Levintina for Garb Wars. They are seeking mentors from the Barony. It will be held on May 31, the weekend after Ruby Joust. They are looking to share expenses, etc. at 50-50 with the Barony. Baroness Jeanne made a motion to provide our support pending a better accounting of costs. Master Richard seconded the motion. All officers approved.. The next meeting will be November 22, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. All members of the populace are always welcome.

This event shall be held at the Prince William County Fairgrounds. 10624 Dumfries Road, Manassas, VA 20112 Rapier Tourney by Lord Dante ([email protected]) The day will begin with a Never-Won-A-Tourney tournament, a single elimination open to anyone who has never won an SCA tournament. Upon completion of the NWaTT, we will be running EIGHT "Fun and Games" style bearpits, with two pits running concurrently. A "Fun and Games" bearpit is one where you keep going into the line unless you are defeated with a thrust to your head. There is no limit to how long you can hold the field, but wounds are retained. If you are eliminated from pit 1, go to pit 2. When pit 1 resolves, pit 3 will start up, and so on. Once we have eight bearpit winners, they will enter a single elimination bracket to determine the overall winner. Archery by Baron Colum ([email protected]) The archery field will be laid out with multiple targets at various distances to challenge the beginners and experts alike. There will also be a beginners range. Play at archery, shop at your leisure and return to archery throughout the day. The range will be available for casual fun shooting all day.

b) Hawk your Wares! Throughout SCA period, wherever there have been markets there have been sellers encouraging, cajoling and even threatening passers-by to buy what they have for sale. In honor of the “Faire” in Holiday Faire, we invite you to try your own hand at selling your own (real or imaginary) wares to the assembled audience, through a performance of your choosing. No documentation is required (but if you are following a period example, an brief verbal explanation before your performance is encouraged).

c) And now for something completely different: Xtreme Documentation Challenge! The challenge, should you choose to accept it, is the following: Pick an item. Do NOTHING to the item. In one page or less, document how the item, or some aspect of it, is period for the SCA.

The favor can be made out of cloth or other materials but should be in keeping with the time period. Paternosters for Your Persona

by Countess Rowan Berran McDowell

Portrait of a Young Girl, Martin Schongauer, c.1475

Overview/Introduction

The use of the word “bead” dates back almost 400 years and is derived from the Anglo Saxon word

“bedde” and also the word for prayer- “bidden”. Prayer beads may have originated with Hindu religious practices in India, but were also found in general use throughout China, Japan, Korea and Tibet. Prayer beads in the form of bead strings were in use by Christians as early as the 2nd century and by the late 1600’s the form we now know as the “rosary” could be found everywhere.

In Europe, a string of prayer beads was first called a “paternoster” after the latin term for the prayer

most often recited on it, the Our Father. Later it evolved into several forms and configurations, but initially it was just a pouch of stones or a linear string of beads.

History

Although in common usage by Christians, paternosters were not officially accepted by the Catholic church until in 1520 when Pope Leo X made the rosary an official instrument for veneration usage. The paternoster or “rosary” took the place of the daily recitation of the Psalms for the non clergy. The Our Father was used because every good Christian was supposed to know the prayer and while the Daily Office or the Psalms might require you to be able to read, the paternoster or “rosary” did not.

When the primary prayer changed from the Our Father to the recitation of “Hail Mary..” it

included only the first part of the prayer with which we are familiar today. This was called “the Angelic Salutation”, i.e., “Hail Mary! full of grace. The Lord is with thee.” While both parts of the prayer are derived from Scripture- the Gospel of Luke, 1:28 combined with Luke, 1: 42. It was the Church which added the second half of the Hail Mary, which came from the prayer book for the dying written by St. Anselm of Canterbury (who died himself in 1109). In 1196, the Bishop of Paris ordered his clergy to teach this form to the members of their flocks and in a short time the prayer became used throughout Europe.

In 1568 The Hail Mary was added to the Our Father, along with the Glory Be to the Father, which

is how the rosary is prayed today.

Why are They Called Paternosters?

The word Paternoster comes from the words “Pater noster”, which is Latin for “Our Father”- a prayer that everyone knew how to recite by heart whether you could read or not. Recitation of the Our Father took the place of reciting the 150 psalms, which were part of the daily devotions of the clergy, monks and priests. Being able to recite the psalms required being literate, not something enjoyed as widely as it is today, so you can see how and why the Our Father became a popular substitute.

At the end of the 15th century, the Paternoster began to be replaced by the prayer which begins

with “Hail Mary”, called the Angelic Salutation. In 1569 AD, Pope Pius V established the original 15 “mysteries” and decreed that all good Christians should say 150 of the “Angelic Salutations” along with reciting the Lord’s Prayer at the conclusion of each decade, making “decades” official and changing the usual form of the paternoster strand. It was also at this time that he added the second half of the prayer which begins with “Holy Mary, Mother of God” giving us the “rosary” as we know it today.

Materials and Construction

These prayer beads were made from a wide variety of materials. What kind of beads pretty much

depended on what the owner could afford or how affluent they wished to appear. The most popular beads were jet, coral in either black or red, amber, filigree beads in silver or gold, pearls, rock crystal, glass, various woods, various seeds and bone or ivory. Bead shapes were usually round, but fluted rounds or “melon” shaped beads, as well as disks, lozenge shapes, ovals or sometimes even small squares were not too uncommon. Faceted beads were rare, but not unknown. Crosses did not become a predominant part of the rosary until the Council of Trent, 1543-1563.

Paternosters were usually strung on silk but could also be strung on linen thread or leather cord.

Lucetted or woven strings were also popular. The color of the stringing material would depend on many things, but the most popular were red, yellow, white or natural color, black if you were very rich or blue if you were particularly devoted to Mary the Mother of God.

Initially, there was no hard and fast rule about the number of beads or even the number of decades.

Decades evolved as an easy way to divide the 150 recitations of the Our Father that replaced the 150 Psalms the clergy were required to say. Many early paternosters had as few as 5 and as many as 150 beads on them. Usually you would find prayer strings of 33 beads for the life of Christ, 64 beads for the

Page 14: The YeomanThe Yeoman - Barony of Bright Hillsbrighthills.atlantia.sca.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/...2014/11/08  · 4 From the Chronicler Thank you to all for the wonderful letters

14

life of Mary, 5 for the Five Wounds, 7 for the Seven Sorrows, etc. However, groups of 10, 15, 20, 33, 63, 72, and 150 and sometimes more were also fairly prevalent.

Eventually, Paternosters, and later, Rosaries usually had 53 or 59 beads and were frequently formed

into bracelets or necklaces and worn by both men and women. Men and women are pictured with both the linear and looped form of these prayer beads. We have a number of portraits that clearly demonstrate this. When you see an odd number of beads in a painting, however, remember that the artist wasn’t really concerned with the correct number of beads but usually more concerned with symmetry and color. Looking at medieval and renaissance portraits gives us a very clear idea of the prevalence and the variety of paternosters. (There is a small collection of these portraits available at the end of this handout.)

While paternosters were a collection of beads, the “Gaud” or “marker” beads that divided the strand

into groups of five or ten and were usually larger then the beads on the rest of the string. “Gauds” also tend to be more ornate and of a higher value then the other beads on the string. Pierre Desrey wrote in his 1510 edition of Olivier de la Marche’s “La Triomphe des Dames”, “...paternosters ought to have fair marker beads of gold, or else beads all of gold in their substance, and enameled on gold with ‘rouge cler’. You must not stint your treasure on them, for there ought to be some signal difference in the marker beads.” So for Gauds, the gaud-ier the better!

You generally see a tassel on at least one end of a string of beads. Sometimes you would find

tassles on both ends, as well as medals, reliquaries, tokens from pilgrimages, babies teeth, good luck charms, small flasks of holy water or dirt from sacred sites, medallions- whatever was meaningful to the owner. Frequently you would have the paternoster attached to everyday jewelry like a brooch or pin or even an alms bag. There are examples of this in Museums everywhere. (A small collection of extant examples is attached to this handout.)

In Europe, crosses or crucifixes started to appear at the ends of paternosters in the latter part of

the 15th century. There are some earlier examples, around the 12th century, of crosses being attached at one end of a paternoster predominantly from the Viking settlements. Given how much a cross looked like a thors hammer, this is not surprising.

Sometime around the 16th century we start to see a group of those three to five extra beads

suspended from the loop that are more familiar to modern rosaries, but those really don’t become common place until well into the 18th century.

The wearing of paternosters became so fashionably prevalent that by the

15th century no self respecting Christian would be seen out and about without their paternoster prominently displayed! How To Make One of Your Own

For a Rosary

Length of silk wire twist needle 52 small beads 6 larger beads medal, cross, tassel at one end or both

Make a knot at one end of the silk leaving a two inch tail, string your beads, one large bead, ten small ones, one large bead, etc. When you get to the last bead of the last group of ten, take your needle and reinsert it into the first large bead drawing up the thread until there is only a fingers breadth of space. This will allow the beads to slide while you “count” them. Tie a knot on the outside of the large bead where the you still have a length of silk. Then string the last small bead, a large bead and a small bead, tie another knot. Add a cross or tassel or token with the ends. Knot firmly and trim excess. You may add a tiny dot of super glue on the knot to keep it from unraveling. This will give you a loop.

For a Paternoster (10, 33 or 50 beads): Length of silk wire twist needle 33 or 50 beads cross or token or tassel at either end

Make a knot at one end of the silk leaving a two inch tail, string your beads, beginning with a large bead, the ten smaller ones, etc. Or 33 or 50 of the same size beads. Leave a small amount of slack and tie a double knot at the end of your strand. Add a cross or tassel or token at either of the ends. Knot firmly and trim excess. You may add a tiny dot of super glue on the knot to keep it from unraveling.

Tales of Bright Hills Past and Present

Once upon a time, in the very new Shire of the Bright Hills, Cragar der Fluegenbar served as the marshal. Cragar was a very nice, but goofy kid, with a penchent for injuring himself with tools. When he squired to Count Knarlic, he changed his name to Timothy of Arindale. Yesterday, some old SCAdians traveled north to celebrate Timothy, and his lovely wife, Gabrielle's coronation as the Sylvan Monarchs of Aethelmarc. A long, but delightful, day. I recognized a surprising number of Atlantean faces. Mistress Theresa and Bjorn arrived at the same time as we, Lady Ariana Flaxenhaired, former seneschale of Highland Foorde, Mistress Cunion and family, formerly of Arindale, now called Lochmere. AND, Master Andrixos of Calontir trim, shared space with the Silk Road Sisters. Heinrich was delivering a helmet, and decided to enter the A&S display. Late in the afternoon, I asked him to assist Chagan, so that I could run, well, hobble briskly to the restroom. I had barely entered, when Lord Alberecht, pounded on the door, asking me to attend court. Heinrich was called before their Majesties. King Timothy demanded to know why Heinrich had not attended his court and made him wait? Heinrich made his appologies. Their Majesties gifted Heinrich with a mug of candied ginger, as the populace determined winner of the A&S display. I cannot speak too highly of the courtesy of the Shire of Abhaimn Caich Ghlais. Lady Jaqueline, merchant coordinator, had a group of helpers who materialized like genies, to help unload the cars and re-load in the pelting rain. Truly, a fabulous day conecting with old friends, and meeting new friends.

How Spike, Lion & Peacock Saved the Day!

By Lady Katarzyna Witkowska

Once upon a time in far eastern land Lived a prince who was exceedingly sad.

He searched his broad kingdom for happiness But found no healing for his loneliness. He traveled the seas to another realm

Where a friendly battle was being held. Hoping the melees would so amuse him

To uplift his spirit that was so grim. He journeyed through the Kingdom of the East

In Aethelmearc his melancholy ceased. He met a princess exceedingly fair.

She was a dazzling jewel with a bold flair. Her vibrant spirit filled his soul with bliss,

Though quite wrong, he resolved she must be his.

He followed the queen to Atlantia And plotted his devious idea.

By dark of night while they were traveling He snatched Lynette from the soon-to-be king.

And smuggled her speedily to his ship. Lynette fought bravely throughout the long trip.

Ragnarr resolute followed fast behind. Determined that his lady he would find. At the sea where the ship had departed

He sat on the shore greatly disheartened, Atlantia’s navy was far away.

Then Spike declared, “I will help you this day.” So Atlantia’s stallion of the sea

Took the Prince to follow as they did flee.

Spike journeyed to the Arabian Sea. Diving and swimming through the waves with ease.

After many days they reached a strange land Where Spike safely left Ragnarr on the sand. Then the prince went a distance, not too far,

Until he came to the Forest of Gir. A fierce lion ruled over that dark place

With whom Ragnarr found himself face-to-face. “You are a stranger to this land,” said he.

Lion asked, “Tell me how this came to be.” Prince Ragnarr told the lion of his quest.

“Until I find Lynette I cannot rest.” “I know the brigand who stole your princess.

I will help you this day,” said the strong beast.

Page 17: The YeomanThe Yeoman - Barony of Bright Hillsbrighthills.atlantia.sca.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/...2014/11/08  · 4 From the Chronicler Thank you to all for the wonderful letters

Again, they went a distance, not too far, And on the edge of the Forest of Gir

They found a peacock with brilliant plumage Singing sweetly in the woodland foliage. “Oh where are you traveling lion king,” Asked the beautiful bird in lilting song. “We rescue a princess in yon fortress.” The peacock was determined to assist.

“I will help you this day.” She did follow. We will reach the castle on the morrow. On the journey the three contrived a plan

How to defeat the prince and make a stand For this venture would be no easy chore

The rajah had guards--a hundred or more.

When they came to the imposing bastion Peacock went in to form a diversion.

He pranced, and sang, and displayed his feathers, And wholly enthralled the prince’s soldiers. Then Ragnarr swiftly snuck in behind them And found dear Lynette, his beautiful gem.

They escaped the magnificent courtyard But were soon spotted by the rajah’s guard.

The lion and the peacock bravely fought Growling and snarling and screeching about.

They kept both the prince and his guards at bay So Lynette and Ragnarr could get away.

Both attacked without care and without fear Then they fled into the Forest of Gir.

The four continued ‘til reaching the sea,

When Spike saw them he rejoiced with great glee. The rajah and his men ran to the beach.

With his sword Ragnarr a lesson did teach. “The moral,” said Ragnarr, “may you now see,

One cannot find joy in other’s misery.” Spike bore them home safe on a ship of gold

Throughout Atlantia may it be told Of the courageousness of Prince Ragnarr,

Spike, lion, peacock--in a land afar. They rescued our princess who now is queen

With cunning and bravery seldom seen. King Ragnarr now rules Atlantia’s shore

While Spike, Lion and Peacock watch with care.

Bring to a boil and adjust temperature to maintain a low boil. Cook until the meat is falling off the bones and the volume of the liquid is reduced. Strain the liquid and adjust the level back to 3 gallons with water. Chop the meat strained out of the stock. Prepare the Rice as follows: In a baking pan place 1 part rice to 2 parts bullion. If using more than one pan, divide the meat evenly between/ among them. Drizzle with olive oil, lightly salt and pepper, and stir. Cover the pan(s) tightly with aluminum foil. Place in a moderately hot oven (350-375) for 25 minutes. Remove foil and check rice, stir, adjust pepper and salt if necessary. Restore foil and return to oven until liquid is absorbed and rice is tender (10-20 minutes.) Yours in cooking, Cordelia
