Can You Turn Your Water Off In An Emergency? 22

Expert’s Say 24

Dreawing of a Dream Kitchen 27

Recipe of the Month 30

I have been chatting with friends recently and quite a few are working on home repairs in preparing for the summer. We have a home maintenance focused issue this month, as we gathered a few of our local experts with their advice to make your home even better.

Our Expert’s Say section is with Crystal Clear in making the most out of your doors and windows on page 24. If you have drippy taps, Bristol Boiler Company can help you fix that with the SureStop switch on page 22 and for all kitchen solutions, Kitchens by Design can make your dream kitchen come true on page 27.

We are chatting to a local mum in Bristol who started her group exercise classes for new mums on page 4. We have a new restaurant review on page 18 this month and now that the summer weather has just about arrived, we have a brilliant barbeque recipe on page 30 from Molesworths of Heanleaze for you to try out. Enjoy!

This month, we are chatting to Laura Gibb, the local mum behind Mama on the Move exercise classes. Laura is a qualified fitness instructor and runs both postnatal exercise classes, as well as exercise classes for mums with older children, at Portico Play in St Andrew’s, and Canford Park, Westbury on Trym.

Catching up with Laura over a cuppa, Laura tells us about her Mama on the Move classes and her personal experiences of being a local mum in Bristol.

Hi Laura, tell me a bit about yourselfI’ve lived in Bristol for 6 years now, after relocating with my husband from London. We finally got on the property ladder 2 years ago and renovated a house in Horfield which was hard work especially as we had a 2 year old and a baby! My daughters are now 4 and 2 years old.

I have always been passionate about sport and exercise; I have played sport from an early age and went on to study it at University. I have built a career in sports development and events and alongside that been personally engaged in all things fitness – I love a fitness challenge! I became a qualified fitness instructor just before I started my family as I was aware that it was something that would work around having children. It was a sensible move as I was made

redundant from my job as a Competition Manager (I managed sports events for school children across Wiltshire) shortly after the birth of my first daughter.

As well as being a full time mum I now teach 6 weekly spin/group cycling classes a week at Horfield and Easton leisure centres and I love it. I get to exercise and motivate others and I get paid to do it! After a day spent instructing my children who usually do the complete opposition it is a revelation to give instructions to 20-30 adults who all do exactly what you say!!

tell me about Mama on the Move.Mama on the Move came about from my passion for exercising throughout pregnancy and after the baby is born. When I was pregnant with my first daughter I was keen to continue my usual exercise routine as long as possible but was unsure what I should/shouldn’t be doing. I found a real lack of knowledge of exercising whilst pregnant aside from the usual recommendations of swimming and pregnancy yoga which lead to me becoming qualified in pre and postnatal adaptations to exercise.

I was desperate to learn more about the pregnant body and exercise, and also the implications on starting an exercise programme after the birth. The course was run by Alison Merry who is a former midwife and now a personal trainer and expert in the field (who better qualified to advise expectant mothers in exercise?!). The benefits to mother AND baby are huge and with the right support and guidance you can continue exercising safely for as long as you feel comfortable.

When and where do you run your classes?Currently I am running the following classes:

* Monday morning, 11am-12pm Postnatal Outdoor Fitness Canford Park, Westbury on Trym.

* Thursday morning, 9.15am- 10.15am Outdoor Fitness (no babies for this one) St Andrews Park, Bishopston.

* Thursday morning 10.45am- 11.45am Indoor Postnatal Fitness, Portico Play, Gloucester Road (room above Portico). Portico has a great café downstairs and there is a baby room if mums want to stick around afterwards and grab a coffee/cuppa/lunch and socialise.

I am available to provide bespoke training packages for groups of new mumss/NCT groups if the above times and venues do not suit. Please call me for more details.

What activities does a typical class offer?Postnatal exercise classes are a mix of cardio and core toning and strengthening exercises. The body has had a huge strain put on it through 9 months of pregnancy, not to mention giving birth, so it is important to start off gently and safely. Class participants should have had their 6 week postnatal check from their doctors if they had a straightforward vaginal delivery and those who had a c section need to wait for 10 weeks post birth.

Classes are generally in a circuit type format, and we will sometimes use resistance bands and small weights. They are designed for all fitness levels and we will concentrate on strengthening core exercises that have been weakened through pregnancy and childbirth. I can advise women on how to check to see if their stomach muscles have come back together if this hasn’t been done through their doctor at the postnatal check. The importance of pelvic floor exercises will be encouraged as well!

Women attending my postnatal classes have seen results fast and commented on improvements in muscle tone and strength as well as losing their baby weight and getting back in their pre pregnancy clothes.

The outdoor fitness class at St Andrews Park is for women who have older children either at school, preschool or nursery. They can come along after dropping the children off and enjoy a fun workout with other mums. I know how hard it is to fit time in for yourself when you are a mum however it is so important to spend time exercising as it is as good for your mental well - being as it is for your body. All fitness levels welcome and we will concentrate on burning maximum calories through cardio activities and again focusing on strengthening that core to pull the tummy in and improve posture. All muscle groups will be targeted, legs, bums, tums and upper body.

What or who inspired you to set up Mama on the Move? The inspiration came from personal experience. I was keen to continue exercising in pregnancy and wanted to have the knowledge to be able to do it safely. Postnatally I found being able to exercise as essential... not just for my body but for my mind! It really is an excellent stress buster and as anyone with a baby/young children know it is an incredibly full on and demanding job. Going for a run, doing an exercise class

allows me to let off steam, have some time out for myself and get the endorphins pumping round. Ultimately, it makes me feel better and although I know full well how exhausting the demands of babies and children are, exercising will make you feel LESS tired and give you more energy to cope( although sometime it may not feel like it at the time!).

Having a baby can sometimes be a bit isolating so doing an exercise class allows you to meet other mums and helps beat the baby blues that can sometimes creep up. All this I know from personal experience which I believe puts me in the perfect position to run classes such as these – I have been there!

I also suffered from a difficult birth with my first daughter and the recovery was long.... being able to exercise SAFELY and not over doing it too soon is crucial for a proper recovery from birth. Pelvic floor muscles need to be strengthened before women are off running or doing high impact activities. I believe a lot of damage can be done from women starting inappropriate exercise classes too soon after giving birth and this was another reason I was keen to start mama on the move.

My classes are not just about losing the baby weight, although this will happen gradually and healthily making it easier to keep the weight off. It is fundamentally about safely and slowly recovering from the pregnancy and birth and gently strengthening your muscles.

What are your personal experiences of being a mum in Bristol? All good, I love it here. I was amazed how at home I immediately felt when we first moved here. It’s very family oriented so that helps as you certainly don’t feel isolated being a mum around here.

Are there any activities locally that your children particularly enjoy?Being a fitness instructor and passionate about physical activity it may come as no surprise that we love the most active classes. Particularly we love Jack in the Box gymnastics in Henleaze, Hawks Gymnastics is also brilliant, and we are fans of Little Badgers Forest School in Leigh Woods. We are members of the Zoo and @ Bristol and the Bristol Museum are great for rainy days.

We also like heading to Horfield Sports Centre for swimming, soft play and Trampolining, St Andrews Park, Portico Play, Rimando’s, and Fresh Ground Cafe . My girls have boundless energy (they wear me out more than the fitness classes that I run) so I’m constantly looking for ways to tire them out.

In your opinion, what are the advantages/ disadvantages of raising children in this part of Bristol? The benefits of living in Bristol are huge, we previously lived in London and loved it but knew it wasn’t the right place for us to bring up a family. Bristol, particularly Bishopston/Horfield is the perfect place for us, a bustling place geared up for families with young children. I’ve never seen so many mums! We are never at a loss for things to do and places to visit, I have made lifelong friends with other like minded mums and we also have some fabulous country side on our doorstep.

However, I grew up by the sea in Devon and sometimes I do miss that, but we are lucky that my parents still

live there for us all to visit for holidays. Another disadvantage is the secondary school situation…. That worries me as much as it does for every other mum around here it seems!

How do you juggle running your classes and being a mum?I’m not going to lie, it’s tough being a full time mum and then dashing out most evenings and at weekends to teach spin classes or to prepare postnatal exercise classes

for the following day. However, it is a genuine passion of mine and as I quickly learnt after becoming a mum it’s all a juggling act! Although we don’t have any family living nearby to help out, I do have some particularly amazing friends who help with childcare – I am so grateful to them!

It’s great that I can work my classes around looking after my children, and once my eldest starts school and youngest is in pre school I will have a lot more time to grow the business and run more classes. I want to start pregnancy exercise classes and I’m also starting to train as a Pilates Instructor as I would love to do Pre and Postnatal Pilates classes…

It has been a very busy spring. The buoyant and competitive market has taken us all a little by surprise. With Sales moving fast, we have seen a related slowdown in Residential Lettings in the last few weeks. These things as always have checks and balances and it remains to be seen how the Bristol market will change again as we move into early summer.

It is good to see the sunshine. A winter of rain means the gardens of Redland, Clifton and Cotham look extraordinary. Now is the perfect time to consider a sale or even letting your property.

RESTAURANT reviewAs dedicated worshipper of Indian food, I would normally make a weekly weekday visit to a curry house to ensure I can enjoy my curry in peace. I do this to be able to enjoy the serious hot spicy favours, free from the potential large and rowdy dinner party groups surrounding you. Choosing this weekly dinner timeslot has worked quite well for me over the years and I have managed to enjoy many fine Indian dinners. It also more reassuring to have a bit more privacy when I tackle my favourite Vindaloo and Phall dishes as when I might be streaming tears of joy from the enjoyment of such a fiery experience.

For the past few years in my daily commute to work, I would pass the Raj Bari in Hotwells and I had subsequently become quite curious to try it at some point. It was not until last month I visited this much anticipated restaurant. The staffs are very polite and keen to tend to your needs. This was especially the case when I ordered a glass of cola and when it arrived; it was incredibly flat and depleted of any fizz. Upon informing our waiter, he was happy to replace it with another glass but when the

second glass came, it was also flat. Our kind and resourceful waiter then offered a small bottle of diet cola as a substitute drink and was free of charge.

For our starters, we ordered a Sheek Kabab (£3.95) which was spiced minced lamb grilled in the tandoori oven. We also had a Chicken Tandoori (£3.95) and an Onion Bhaji (£3.95) all of which were all quite well cooked and not too overcooked or oily. In terms of taste and presentation, they

Page 19: May 2014 - Living Plus Bristol

were as good as you would expect from a good standard restaurant, but since these menu item are so popular anyway, I have found that it is not so easy to find a more spectacular variety.

For main courses, we ordered a few curries of different strengths with the the medium hot Paneer Chicken Tikka Bhuna (£8.45) cooked with cottage cheese in a thick sauce as our mildest pick. The rich and spicy

character of this dish was well balanced and very delicious. Moving up in strength, we had a Lamb Madras (£6.95), which was supposed to be fairly hot but was not a huge difference from the medium hot variety. At the top end of the spice scale, we had a Chicken Vindaloo (£6.95) which was again not as hot as it can be and tasted a little sour from its tomato base. Both curries were above average and of good quality which would surely impress those who want to challenge themselves on the next level of chilli tolerance. However for those who are familiar with very hot and spicy dishes, both dishes fail to reach the fine balance of flavour and hot sensation. The Vegetable Biryani (£8.95) was generously portioned and full of flavour with a delicate aroma.

Over the years, I have visited a large number of Indian restaurants and I believe there are three main categories which they all fall in. The overwhelming majority of Indian restaurants tend

Raj Bari183 Hotwell RoadBristol, BS8 4SATelephone: 0117 922 7617www.rajbaribristol.co.uk/

to fall into the category of specialising English tastes. As such, milder and smoother spiced dishes are usually done to a good standard. However when you go for the hotter dishes, sometimes there is a tendency to find there is hardly any difference in dishes between the medium hot and very hot sections. Over the years since I had my first curry, I had progressively graduated and moved on from mild to hot dishes. Now that I am able to sample the full spectrum, anything that is short of a punch of spice seems bland by comparison. In this majority of English Indian restaurants, there are some who are very good on delivering a good quality curry that anyone can enjoy. Raj Bari is a good example of this with attentive service to impress. If you are an occasional visitor of Indian restaurants, this is a good restaurant to visit and might even ignite a fuse in you to become a regular curry eater.

The remaining Indian restaurants fall into two smaller minority groups. There is a group that should be avoided at all costs for their achievement of zero stars in food hygiene. However, there are some restaurants which are quite spectacular in offering amazingly authentic dishes with spice blends and flavours to enlighten your entire sense of taste, but that will not be revealed until my next curry review.

Expert’s Saywith the doors, windows and conservatories specialist Crystal Clear

We talk to James Mizen, Managing Director of Bristol-based doors, windows and conservatories specialist Crystal Clear, about the latest secondary glazing options for doors and windows.

Question 1:I love my original timber box sash windows, but their draughty and let the heat out. Do I have to replace the whole window to solve these problems?

While traditional timber sash windows look elegant, they tend to be draughty and prone to leaks. Unfortunately their single-glazed panes of glass let the cold in and the heat out, thus making your home less energy-efficient and more costly to heat.

Secondary glazing is a cost-effective method of thermal insulation and sound-proofing original windows, with a discreet finish and the added benefits of increased security and condensation control. It’s not subject to Conservation Area restrictions and is generally approved for Listed Buildings and can be manufactured with curved and arched heads to match your existing windows. It’s suitable for all types of primary windows and doors and available in a wide range of finishes and styles to suit every type and age of home, so you can rest assured that secondary glazing will maintain the look of your original windows while making your home more comfortable and energy-efficient.

Question 2:I’d like to make my home more energy-efficient but don’t have a large budget. What can I do quickly and cost-effectively to reduce my heating bills?

You could consider secondary glazing, which is one of the most cost-effective solutions for increasing the energy-efficiency of your home. Through the energy it saves, you’ll enjoy reduced heating bills and a more comfortable home, as well as less noise and improved security. Our secondary glazing specialist can help you decide on best style for you, based on your budget and home, and will show you examples of the wide range of types and finishes available. The energy-efficiency of secondary glazing can be further increased, by specifying low ‘E’ heat-reflective glass.

have been accepted as part of the Government’s Trust Mark scheme which provides yet more proof of its ability to offer and provide an exceptional service, further details of both Fair Trades and Trust Mark are available from the studio.

The proven approach and tested route plan for a successful project starts with an initial meeting at the studio or at your home where the team discuss and take details of the new kitchen. This will ensure a balance between the three main factors, the design, the practicality and the cost, the aim following the initial discussions is to arrive at the ideal balance between these factors. The next stage will be to arrange a suitable time to present the first design and should you be in principle happy with that design, the team would normally arrange further visits to complete the overall price for the project.

The first design and estimate is provided free of charge as the company believes it should be fair to offer clients the chance to see first hand how the team operates, design and structuring prices in comparison to competitors. Although there is no charge for the initial designs, the team endeavours to provide top professional service and the lack of up front charges does not reflect a lack of value.

Kitchens by Design will provide you with an in depth specification pack detailing everything discussed and agreed for your final approval before placing the order for the furniture and setting installation dates. A supply only option is also available if preferred. With over 16 years of design and installation experience, you can expect a first class service is ensured from start to finish.

Yoghurty spatchcocked free range chickenfor the BBQ or oven

METhoD 1. Mix together all the ingredients for the marinade. Put the chicken in a non-reactive bowl and pour on the marinade.

2. Turn the chicken over with your hands, making sure the marinade gets into every nook and cranny, cover, refrigerate and leave to marinate for at least two hours. Make sure it is at room temperature before grilling. Sprinkle with salt.

3. Place the bird breast side up towards the edge of the grill where it’s slightly cooler, and cook for 20-25 minutes, then turn over and cook for a further 15-20 minutes, spraying from time to time with a little water if it’s browning too fast.

4. Angle the lid down, if your barbecue has one, or simply use an upturned roasting tin, to reflect the heat back down and semi-roast your barbecuing chicken.

5. The bird is done when the juices run clear when pierced between the thigh and breast bone (or when it reads 80C on a meat thermometer).

6. Remove from the heat and leave to rest for 10-15 minutes before carving.

INGREDIENTS (Serves 6)1 spatchcocked free-range chicken (about 1.8kg)Salt

For the marinade 8 tbsp whole milk yoghurt 2 garlic cloves, crushed Juice of ½ lemon 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander ½ tsp chilli flakes ½ tsp freshly ground black pepper

Even though you have to be careful about controlling the temperature, cooking a whole chicken on the grill is less trouble than fiddling with lots of drumsticks. This really needs to be done on a relatively low barbecue, to avoid burnt-on-the-outside-but-raw-in-the-middle syndrome. If you are not sure how to spatchcock a bird, ask Molesworths of Henleaze to do it for you.
