Indoor Christmas MarketHarbourside - 12 to 15 December, 19 to 22 December, 10:00am - 8:00pmDown in the docks the tides are turning, as Bristol’s harbourside continues to take strides in becoming a less commercial but more cultural centre to Bristol by providing an independent alternative to the high street, this Christmas.

Over 8 days, in the countdown to Christmas, the Harbourside Market will be transforming one of the incredible, unused buildings (formerly Chicago Rock) into a wonderful indoor market with free entry. The stripped back space will become home to up to 30 stalls, selling local produce and handcrafted wares (sometimes made right in front of you!) The walls of the listed building will be covered with the work of local artists and the bar can provide delightful mulled cocktails and a chance to relax.

Market manager James Coomber says, “The Harbourside Christmas market will provide a vibrant, locally focused alternative for shoppers. The harbourside will be a really magical place to be this Christmas with both the Spiegeltent and the ice-rink adding to the festive atmosphere. Now all we need is some snow!”

Over the Christmas holidays, we usually spend more time in and make good use of your home entertainment systems such as TV and computer. If you can’t imagine how life would be if your TV broke down over Christmas, it is also a good idea to maintain your computer to avoid any mishaps. To get you started, here are a few tips from Gildas Jones, Director of Dial A Geek Bristol to help you stay ahead with your online security:

Use a strong password and do not reuse them for other websitesA strong password contains a mix of letter and numbers, upper and lower case, no single dictionary words then add in special characters.

Groan.. how are you supposed to remember that… read on.

Store all these passwords in a password managerIt’s nearly impossible to remember passwords and why waste valuable headspace trying.

I’ve written on this subject before I still recommend a software called Lastpass (www.lastpass.com), it will securely store your password in a vault (an encrypted file held on their servers) To unlock this vault you need a 10+ Character password, usually the longer the better.

This is a lot safer than using your web browser to store the passwords. (they are very easy to find)

Password reminder questionsWhen signing up for most online services, there are security questions to gain access to the account in case you forget your password.

If you make these too easy, they will be guessable and so someone can gain access to your account very simply, no matter what you pasword is.

These questions are in your account settings and can be changed, so if you signed up 5 years ago and just put easy answers in, login and change them.

Use an up to date antivirusUse a recomended antivirus, we like Eset Endpoint AV for business computers. For home use Eset Nod32 also Microsoft security essentials is OK for a free AV. (not as good as a paid for AV) For Macs we recommend Sophos free for Mac.

Keep all your software and opertating system up to dateUpdates are annoying and seem like a waste of time, they also occasionally break things, but they are necessary.

Every week there are new holes found in different software and web browsers (recommend Google chrome for a web browser).

Patches and updates are released to close these holes, so if you have an ancient edition of Adobe Acrobat, just update it.

When then Java update pops up, just update it.

These are the top tips, there are plenty of others and if you get an email asking for passwords or a phone call from Microsoft, just ignore it.

RESTAURANT review

Just 30 minutes drive away towards the north of Bristol, you will find Thornbury Castle and not only is it the only Tudor castle in England to be run as a hotel but it also has a restaurant which is worth a visit.

Thornbury Castle has a rich history spanning 500 years and for history buffs, Henry VIII stayed there for ten day with his Queen Anne Boleyn and also Mary I lived there for many years. Although the castle did fall into a state of ruin for over two centuries, the current castle and grounds had been renovated since 1824 and well maintained to the standards of a luxury country hotel. The Privy Garden and Goodly Garden at the castle grounds are impressive samples of Tudor gardens and should be not be missed if

you visit during daytime. There is even a vineyard within the castle walls and has been producing its own wine for over 500 years.

You will discover some wonderful interiors and furnishings including log fires, oak panelled walls, suits of armour and tapestries which is everything you would expect from a Tudor castle. The staffs are polite and courteous upon your arrival; you are escorted to The Baron’s Sitting Room where you can enjoy an aperitif whilst taking in the fine details of historic and period features in admiration. The dining room is situated in the tower part of the castle where its uniqueness is in the hexagonal room with large, imposing arrow-slit windows and open fireplace.

The choice of menus available included a Tasting Menu, Seasonal and A La Carte. All of whom had many traditional fine dining dishes and some with a creative twist. The

focus of the food is based on locally sourced ingredients and produce. With a abundance in the selection of enticing dishes to choose from, we ordered from the A La Carte menu. To start, the Creedy Carver chicken consommé served with dumplings, Girolles and black truffle was a particularly pleasant surprise, offering a definitive flavour and intensity. The subtle taste of Girolle mushrooms was well balanced with the other ingredients which elevated this simple dish to provide an exciting taste sensation.

We also had the seared Orkney hand dived scallops with ham hock, celery and apple; which offered fantastically fresh ingredients to astonish your taste but it did make me think how everything had worked together to bring about an outstanding flavour like the Chicken consommé. The scallops on its own were fresh and brilliant, but did not work well with the full flavoured ham hock and its accompaniments which in truth had overpowered the delicate seafood taste.

For main course, we ordered a medium rare ribeye of aged English beef with Cocottes potatoes, wild mushrooms, roast garlic, heritage carrots, baby spinach and red wine jus. Exactly as in its description, this is one for the traditionalists who will find this difficult to turn down. Although it might not be the most creative item on the menu selection to choose from, it is one of those special dishes that would rarely let you down. When it is well executed and it becomes

the perfect celebratory dinner which makes the special occasion remarkable whilst leaving you with satisfaction and gratitude.

Overall, what you get is an outstanding and intimate venue with consistent and excellent food, brought together with attentive and sincere service. There are areas which can be improved on such as food refinement and service efficiency. Value for money by comparison with the quality of food offered may divide opinions but I believe there is hardly another dining venue available which ticks all the right boxes for a special celebration dinner. Even as a sightseeing trip with a place for a good meal is worth the trip alone.

A Year of Doing GoodJudith O’Reilly, paperback RRP £7.99

Judith O’Reilly, author of the hugely popular blog and book Wife in the North embarks on a year long social experiment in the witty A Year of Doing Good.

Fed up of New Year’s resolutions involving diets and exercise abandoned on January 2nd, Judith is attempting to be good. For one whole year.

She embarked on a mission to do one good deed every day. Some called it a social experiment. At times she called it madness.

Juggling family, friends and a variety of neighbours in the small Northumberland village she calls home, she recounts the ups, downs, moments of doubt and sheer bloody hard work of doing good.

From the small - babysitting a friend’s child, clearing up her neighbour’s dead mice and feeding her friendship cake Herman the German, to the slightly larger - trying to raise £10,000 for charity with her Jam Jar Army and teaching a severely handicapped child to write - she describes what she learns along the way: that no good deed is too small and that being good makes you happy. Well, most of the time.

‘A funny, uplifting and admirable book’ Observer

‘Banish January blues with A Year of Doing Good by Judith O’Reilly who resolved to do one good turn day. . . utterly uplifting’ Woman & Home

‘Fizzing with energy Judith’s writing is open-hearted and funny. . . though not a guide to doing good, Judith’s story may inspire you to do a little more for others this year’ Express

‘Glorious sincerity. . .the admiring accounts of others’ lives, the detailing of the deeds gladly done or furiously resented, the unending chaos of family life - all are rendered honestly, colourfully and occasionally hilariously’ Lucy Mangan, Sunday Times

Judith O’Reilly is a writer and journalist. Her first book Wife in the North was based on her blog of the same name and was a bestseller. Her second book, a novel, is living in a drawer. Her third book is this one. She is married with three children, and for one year she tried to be good.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from CJ Hole Clifton….

Frankly I cannot quite believe that we are here at the end of 2013.

It feels as if a lot has happened in the last twelve months: a royal birth; a long hot summer; typhoons and storms; Bristol had its first mayor; Residents Parking debates for the city; Andy Murray won Wimbledon; and the Government introduced the ‘Help to Buy’ Scheme. 2013 has been busy and buoyant for the housing market in Bristol and here on the frontline it certainly feels like the gloom of recession is clearing. CJ Hole Clifton has moved offices this year which has undoubtedly contributed to the feeling of being busy and a sense of change. It is difficult to predict what 2014 will bring, I would aim for sensible optimism once again.

In the meantime I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Best Wishes for the New Year

Did you know that coronary heart disease is the UK’s single biggest killer? It kills nearly one in six men and more than one in ten women and is responsible for almost 74,000 deaths in the UK each year, an average of 200 people each day. There are currently 2.3 million people in the UK living with coronary heart disease. On the first Friday of the month, 7 February, the British Heart Foundation (BHF) is asking the great British public to get involved with Ramp up the Red. Anything goes, as long as it’s red. Whether it’s wearing red make up, donning some fetching red trousers, a traffic-stopping little red dress or painting your nails a scarlet shade, the BHF is urging you to go as red as you dare and organise a Ramp up the Red party with friends, families and colleagues to raise funds that will go directly towards vital research, support and care for those suffering with heart disease.

If you want to get involved with Ramp up the Red, simply encourage your colleagues, friends or pupils to go red for a day. The BHF is the biggest funder of life-saving heart research in the UK to help everybody who suffers from a heart problem. This research has already made medical history but funds are urgently needed to fund further research. The Saturday’s Mollie King, celebrity face of the British Heart Foundation’s (BHF) Ramp up the Red says “It’s so easy to organise and you’ll be helping the BHF to continue to fund life-saving heart research in the UK to help everybody who suffers from a heart problem. It is a cause that is particularly important to me, as my grandfather sadly passed away after suffering a heart attack when I was younger.”

Help mums, dads, grandparents or babies born with heart problems by Ramping up the Red for the BHF on 7 February and join the fight for every heartbeat. Ramp up the Red this February to help fight coronary heart disease, the UK’s single biggest killer.

To order your FREE fundraising pack, visit bhf.org.uk/red or call 0800 0316 316 to sign up for your free fundraising pack.

Warm up exercises are needed regardless of the type of workout you choose. The warm up exercises will prevent sprains and strains. In winter, you need to increase the amount of time you spend on warm up exercises. This is due to the reduced temperatures and the fact that the muscles are tighter in the winter, so injuries are more common. There are a few warm up exercises you can choose from.

STATIC STReTCHeS When you are planning to walk or jog outside in the winter, it’s imperative that you perform your leg, arm and back stretches. Take some extra time to stretch your entire body (i.e. 10 minutes). Don’t forget to stretch the hamstrings, the quadriceps and the Achilles’ tendon.

ARM CIRCLeS Arm circles can be performed as warm up exercises if you are planning to ski or bike. Circle your arms from one side to the other, making sure to increase the tempo. You may also take some deep breaths raising your hands up in the air. When you exhale, bend over and quickly move your hands towards the ground.

TwIST YOUR UPPeR BODY To stretch your upper body, place your hands on your hips and move your upper body from left to right, then from right to left. Try rotating your upper body clockwise and then counterclockwise.

JUMPInG JACkS Jumping jacks can increase your heart rate, but make sure you perform a few stretching moves prior to these. The jumping jacks will ensure that the heart will start pumping more blood to the muscles, so that you won’t be prone to injuries.

wALkInG Prior to a longer run, you can take 5 minutes to walk and put your blood into motion. You can also perform the hands and upper body stretches while you walk.

METHoD

1. Place the venison in a non-metallic dish. Stab the meat in several places with a small sharp knife. Mix the olive oil, lemon rind and juice, rosemary, salt and pepper together and pour over the venison.

2. Rub the marinade all over the haunch, cover and leave in a cool place to marinate for several hours or overnight. The next day, insert small sprigs of fresh rosemary into the slits. Preheat the oven to 230C/gas 8. Weigh the venison and calculate the cooking time, allowing 15 minutes per 450g for medium venison and 20 minutes for well done.

3. Scatter the carrots, parsnips and potatoes with the remaining sprigs of rosemary over the base of a very large roasting tin. Lift the venison out of the marinade and place on top of the vegetables. Pour over any remaining marinade.

4. Put the venison to brown in the oven for 15 minutes. Turn down the heat to 200C/gas 6 and add 300 ml (1/2 pint) stock, cook for the calculated time. Baste frequently with the juices in the pan.

5. When the venison is cooked, remove to a serving dish, cover and allow to rest for 15 -20 minutes in the cooled switched-off oven. This will make it easier to carve and re-distribute the juices throughout the meat.

6. Transfer the vegetables to a serving dish and keep warm. Carve the meat into generous slices and serve with the vegetables
