Recipe of the Month 28

Kids’ Corner 30

It looks like the sunny summer weather has finally come to an end with the new school term starting this month. As much as I am sure we will all miss the weather, I suppose that’s less distraction and more productivity for everyone.

If the change of weather is anything like last year’s endless rainfall, our feature article this month can help you understand and deal with any damp issues you might have in your house on page 4. With a better understanding of damp problems, you could save yourself a lot of money before Christmas.

In case if you don’t already know, there is a slick barber shop that opened a few months back on Cotham Hill and our new shop feature this month is about Shotgun Barbers on page 15.

You can find out if you are one of our lucky readers who got free tickets to visit Wyndcliffe Court Sculpture Gardens in our Reader’s Corner results this month on page 22. Thank you for participating and we will have a new Reader’s Corner offer next month. We also have a restaurant review in this month on page 24 and delicious veggie lasagne recipe for you to try out on page 28.

Enjoy!

The summer weather seems to be over and the dreary rain is back again to remind us normality has returned. If this change of weather is anything similar to the endless rainfall we had last year, you might want fix any home maintenance issue now. Dampness and the damage it can cause to your home can be very serious and not to mention very expensive to repair. You can act now and avoid any stress which might stop you from enjoying a relaxing holiday at home this Christmas.

What kind of damp is affecting my home? How to treat damp depends on the type of damp that’s affecting your home. You may also find that you have more than one kind of damp, making the solution more complicated. In most cases of damp, you’ll need to consult a builder, surveyor or specialist damp company.

The three most common kinds of damp are rising damp, penetrating damp and condensation. To work out the best way to treat the damp in your home, you’ll need to work out which of these you have.

Rising damp Rising damp can cause serious damage to your house with expensive repairs, so it’s vital to deal with it. Rising damp is caused by ground water moving up through a wall. Most walls allow some water in, but

Don’t Get Damp Again!

it’s usually stopped from causing damage by a barrier called a damp-proof course. This is usually a horizontal plastic or slate strip in the wall.

If this is missing or ineffectual, your wall may suffer from rising damp. This type of damp can also happen when the level of the ground outside your home is higher than your damp-proof course, allowing water to get above it.

Symptoms of rising dampIf you have rising damp you may notice damaged skirting boards and floorboards, crumbling or salt stained plaster and peeling paint and wallpaper. There may also be a tide mark along the wall.

How to deal with rising damp?To deal with rising damp you have to make sure that your damp-proof coursing is working. If you have a perfectly good damp-proof course (you will need an expert to confirm this), you can solve the problem simply by digging away the soil on the exterior side to the damp wall to below the level of the damp-proof course. If your damp-proof course isn’t working effectively you may need a new one. The most common remedy is for a builder or damp specialist to drill holes in your wall and inject damp-proof cream, but there may be alternative solutions. There is usually a guarantee period for a damp proof course works performed, you should check if the guarantee is still valid which could save you some money in repairs.

Penetrating damp Penetrating damp is caused by water leaking through walls. This type of damp may move around within a building, but this is through horizontal movement rather than by travelling up walls (as is the case with rising damp). Penetrating damp is usually caused by structural problems in a building, such as faulty pipes, guttering or roofing.

Symptoms of penetrating dampPenetrating damp often shows up through damp patches on walls, ceilings or floors, which may darken when it rains. You’re more likely to get penetrating damp if you live in an older building with solid walls, as cavity walls provide some protection.

Page 6: September 2014 - Living Plus Bristol

Call us on 07833208953 to advertise www.facebook.com/livingplusuk Tell people you saw their ad in Living Plus

How to deal with penetrating damp? You will need to work out the cause of penetrating damp before you can treat it. Start by examining your gutters and downpipes for leaks or cracks. Check the roof – including the pointing (gaps between tiles) and flashing (where a roof meets the wall of a chimney). Check window frames and doors to see if there are any gaps.Once you have found where water may be leaking through to your walls, you’ll probably need to ask a builder to repair the fault. The solution depends on how water is entering walls, so could include installing new guttering or repointing your roof.

Condensation Condensation is the most common kind of damp problem and it is caused by moist air condensing on walls. It’s mainly a winter problem, as at this time of year walls are much colder than the air inside. Condensation can be exacerbated by poor ventilation, and heating that comes on and off, as this allows warm, damp air to condense.

BASED IN BRISTOL

Symptoms of condensationYou may notice water droplets on windows or walls, see dark mould appearing and/or notice an unpleasant smell. If left untreated, condensation can damage paint and plaster and cause window frames to decay.

How to deal with condensation? You can improve a condensation problem with better ventilation. If you do not have a bathroom or kitchen fan you should consider installing them as these two rooms are responsible for most moisture in a house. You may also find that by having you heating on constantly at a lower heat is better than having it switching from high to off. Dehumidifiers can also help to deal with

condensation. As cold spots on walls increase condensation, better insulation may improve it. So having cavity wall insulation or specialist insulation materials fixed to the outside of your house can help.

What’s the best way to deal with damp? Before you call out a damp specialist, it is better to have an idea of how much it cost to repair damp. The cost of fixing a damp problem will depend on the extent of the problem and where in the country you live. The table below gives a guideline to the approximate costs of what you can expect to pay for some typical solutions.

These costs are from the Building Cost Information Service, which is part of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors. The costs include everything necessary to carry out the work including labour, material and VAT (correct as of December 2011).

Don’t pay for unnecessary treatment If you are considering damp-proofing treatment, you should make sure it is absolutely necessary by getting quotes from at least three companies and seeking advice from an independent damp specialist to check if there are inconsistencies in the work recommended.

This is important to avoid getting quotes which might include more works than what you actually need. By doing so you could save yourself from spending hundreds of pounds on unnecessary damp-proofing treatment. If there are inconsistencies in the type of work recommended, or if you are concerned that the companies may be recommending unnecessary treatment, consider getting an independent damp specialist to assess your home. An independent damp specialist will have no vested interest in recommending unnecessary work so can give you an unbiased opinion on what kind of remedial treatment is necessary - however this could cost between £100 and £750.

Is damp-proofing work guaranteed? Most companies offer a guarantee - find out what’s included in the price or available at an extra cost. Property Care Association members may also offer an additional insurance-backed guarantee that will cover you if the company goes bust.

How can I ensure my damp-proof course continues to work?Generally, a damp-proof course should look after itself. However, you can avoid causing problems by ensuring the external ground level remains 150mm (6in) below it, not bridging it with internal or external coats of plaster, and ensuring it’s repaired if damaged by any building alterations.

Red Maids’ students have once again achieved outstanding examination results and are now preparing to move on some of the best courses, mainly at Russell Group universities.

At International Baccalaureate Diploma 22% of subjects at higher level were awarded level 7 - the highest level possible - and 80% achieved a level 6 or 7. Five girls scored an amazing 41 points out of a possible 45.

At A2 Level, 14.5% of all entries were graded A* and 28% of students gained at least one A* grade.

More than half of all A2 entries – 52% - were awarded an A* or A grade and in total, 16 girls achieved three or four A* and A grades.

Speaking of these results, Headmistress Isabel Tobias commented, “Our students are academically able and motivated and with the support of outstanding teachers they have achieved the best possible outcomes.”

In Economics, German, Latin, and Philosophy and Ethics, the girls swept the board with 100% A* and A grades.

In Art, Business Studies, Further Maths, Music, Physical Education, Russian and Spanish all students received A*, A or B grades.

Mrs Tobias added, “The most important thing is that young people are able to find out what they are good at and are equipped to fulfil their dreams. The girls at Red Maids’ pursue challenging courses which will lead them into the professions and help them make an impact in the world.”

New Shop@Cotham HillShotgun BarbersOne of the more exciting aspects of introducing a new shop to the neighbourhood is when it is an independent and unique, non-high street chain shop. This month we got just that and we are looking at Shotgun Barbers on Cotham Hill which is exactly what we needed to bring back the sense of cool to the local area. Shotgun is a contemporary barbers covering all aspects of cutting from traditional to high fashion. Shotgun Barbers is a new company and it is the brainchild of owners John and Sam.

John started his career in the mid-90s at Fish Hairdressing in Soho and during that time he had done magazine work and even worked on a couple of pulp music videos. In the last couple of years, John has also done fashion supplements for The Guardian.

John opened his first shop, Chop Barbers 13 years ago in Cheddar and today there are 3 barber shops in the Chop chain, a hairdressing salon call Chops and an academy teaching NVQ level two and three in barbering & hairdressing in Cheddar.

John and Sam first met in Cheddar eight years ago when Sam was a trainee at Chop Barbers. Sam worked there for 3 years and eventually moved to Bristol to work at a barber shop on Gloucester Road for 5 years where he built himself a massive following with his slick scissor skills, amazing customer service and banter!

John and Sam both share a mutual love for vinyl. This is reflected in the DJ corner in the shop where you can buy and sell soul, funk, classic hip-hop vinyls. Shotgun is a shop with staffs who love what they do and it oozes its charms in both their work and vibe. John, Sam and top barbers Paul and Alex welcomes all gents who are looking to get a slick, sharp haircut with an edge on tradition. The shop works with no appointments with plenty of magazines, coffee, a tuck shop and playing vinyls all day!

They also have an app @Shotgunbarbers where you sign in with a loyalty card. Checkout the up and coming events and look at the gallery for inspiration.

Vince Whitfield Senior Valuer,

It’s September and time for many of us to return to our respective desks, homes, schools after the summer holidays.

The Bristol sales market will almost certainly gain some momentum now as we head into the autumn and the lettings market will slow a little, not much. I should be wary of making predictions, there are all sorts of factors that can affect the state of residential sales and lettings markets, but generally speaking, growth in sales is traditional at this time of year, as it is in the spring.

The summer was definitely very different to the first half of the year and extremely busy for renters and landlords. It will be interesting to see if warnings on interest rates and the increase in conveyancing times will have any impact as we move forward.

Here at CJ Hole Clifton, we know that moving house or buying an investment are some of the biggest commitments people make. With new management software and new members in our team, we look forward to helping our clients make the right property decisions whatever the financial climate this September.

RESTAURANT reviewWhen I first visited The Star and Dove over a year ago, I was pleasantly surprised by the food quality of their bar snacks and I was determined to make a return trip at some point to try their dinner menu. Since I rarely visit Totterdown, this return trip has taken a while longer than I had hoped but this visit was well worth it and I wished I had gone back sooner.

Whenever I am looking to try something new dining out, I would look for certain qualities in a restaurant and this wonderful gastropub hits all the right notes for me. From the moment you look at the menu, you immediately know that you are in for something quite different. The distinctive concept about the food here is that whilst most restaurants based their cooking on either a traditional or modern interpretation. The Star and Dove does neither of the two but instead goes even further back from what we understand as traditional cooking and takes you on a something closer to history lesson of what English food used to taste like. On our visit, our menu was an introduction to the food of William Verrall, a noted eighteen century English

Page 25: September 2014 - Living Plus Bristol

pubican and head chef of The White Hart Inn in Lewes, Sussex. Verrall’s achievements included the introduction of French methods of cooking to English food of its time which was met with much popularity. As a forerunner in centuries before the existence of gastropubs, Verrall pioneered this concept and also published his book in 1759, titled ‘A Complete System of Cookery’ which was the likely inspiration for this menu.

For starters, we ordered the Calves Tongue & Cauliflower (£6.50), which was corned and slow cooked beef tongue with Bromham cauliflower, watercress and olive oil. The taste and texture of the ox tongue was quite different from what I expected as it was quite tender full of flavour while the purple Bromham cauliflower was a visual treat. We also had the Eggs on Soleil (£5.50), which was wine marinated duck eggs cooked in beer batter, aged vinegar mayonnaise & fried parsley. If you are looking for a no nonsense starter to satisfy your appetite with a pint of ale, this is the ideal fix for you.

For main courses, we tried the Beef Tails with Carrots (£15.00), which was slow braised ox tail, steamed rainbow carrots, pickled shallots, roasted meat stock and thyme. I do not recall the last time I saw ox tail being offered on a menu and with my keen appreciation

Page 26: September 2014 - Living Plus Bristol

Call us on 07833208953 to advertise www.facebook.com/livingplusuk Tell people you saw their ad in Living Plus

for this beef delicacy, I simply could not resist ordering this. My taste for ox tail lies in its intense flavour and the delicate texture of the meat to which there is no finer cut of beef that can take its place. As expected, this dish was delicious, robust in flavour and a great match with a glass of Merlot. How I wish to see more ox tail items on restaurant menus today. We also had the Dressed Trout ‘C. Cottons Receipt’ (£14.00), which was a fillet of river trout poached in butter beer sauce served with potato crisps, horseradish and shredded lemon. It is so common to find overcooked fish nowadays that you would half way expect it anywhere but the trout was cooked to perfection. I was unsure about the taste of horseradish with the trout but the slow cooked onion at the base was quite delicious as it absorbed the flavours of the all the ingredients.

For desserts, we had the Pears Portuguese Fashion (£5.50) which was port poached pear with cinnamon cream and lemon. The taste of the fruits, spices and cream was in good balance but the poached pear was a little hard which made it a little difficult to cut when eating with the given teaspoon. We also had the Cherries in French Paste (£5.50) which was fried Beigners, dried and puree’d cherries which was a remarkable blend of varying textures and flavours including crispiness, sponginess of the fritter, the smooth creamy paste comparable to a fine panna cotta and the refreshing fruitiness of the cherries.

The service staffs were polite, enthusiastic and keen to explain the menu concept and the food. I was most impressed by the innovative direction of the food with care to its

traditional roots, whilst all dishes solidly executed without falling into the trap what could have been close to a themed medieval banquet. Faithful to its food concept and without being commercial, The Star and Dove today bring thoughtfulness and care in its food which is a rare quality nowadays. For that alone, it is worth another visit and a strong recommendation.
