We are constantly trying to improve little bits and pieces around the house to make it an ideal and comfortable environment for everyone in the family.

The sheer amount of money you spend on remodelling and decorating your home over the years (and not to mention the endless hours!) to turn your home into a perfect place makes it a priceless investment.

So how well are you protecting your home as your priceless investment? You might have noticed that your neighbourhood is constantly changing with not only new neighbours arriving and leaving in short space of time but also the number of new faces that include builders, decorators, plumbers, tradesmen from utility companies, etc. Even if you have a state of the art anti-burglar security system, it is also good to be that extra bit more cautious of the possible risk areas around your home which might attract burglars.

When you are looking for the vulnerable areas around your home, it certainly helps when you adopt an opportunist burglar’s way of thinking while you look for the tell-tale signs of weaknesses in your home. Here is a 10 points guide to help you protect yourself from being the victim of a burglary:

Burglar alarmS Many homes still do not have a burglar alarm and this should be a basic security measure on all homes. The siren box will act as a visual deterrent to some extent (dummy sirens can also be bought cheaply) and you can choose a system that simply let’s off an alarm or one that dials a pre-set number or a local security company. If you are a pet-owner, avoid ‘Beware of the dog’ signs as they tend to indicate that you might not have an alarm in your property. A thief will also think that you probably leave your back door open to let the dog into the garden. The same goes for an ‘I love cats’ sign, or something similar. Pet owners often don’t have an alarm.

Checklist & Inventory One of the best things you can do is to film every room of your house in detail with a video camera, or take lots of photos. Not only does this help you to remember where everything was if you were burgled, but it also helps you to prove to your insurance company that certain items were in your house. You can also mark your property so that if in case you are burgled, your possessions can be identified should the police recover them. This can be achieved by etching your postcode, surname and house number/name onto the item, or where this is not practical, using an ultraviolet marker.

WINdoWS Most burglars will want to enter your property from the rear and it is most likely that they will look to force a window to gain entry. Breaking a window will usually be a last resort for burglars as this will attract unwanted attention. Make sure your windows have window locks that are visible from the outside looking-in. Keep windows and doors shut and locked, even when you are at home. A thief will burgle your property even when someone is inside, for example, when they see a bathroom light go on.

doorS Make sure your external doors are strong, in good condition and secured to a high standard. Fitting a 5 lever mortice deadlock or extra sliding bolts will greatly improve security and French doors - which are much weaker than singular doors - should be fitted with top and bottom mortice locks on both doors. Having two locks on your front door will make your home seem like too much harder work to a burglar. If you have just one cylinder lock on your door, a burglar knows that he can get into your home no matter what. If you have two locks on your door and your next door neighbour only has one, the burglar will very likely go next door. He’s not going to make more work for himself. You can also put a wire basket on the inside of your letter box to prevent burglars from fishing for keys through the letterbox – thieves know that keys are often left on a table next to the front door.

lIghtINg Burglars don’t like to be in the spotlight so you should ensure you have outdoor lights fitted that operate on a sensor switch (to save electricity) which activates when movement is detected. Using timer switches can also be a good deterrent for an opportunist thief if you are away for a few days.

JoIN Your loCal NeIghBourhood WatCh Even by displaying a sticker saying that you do will show the potential thief that you are aware of the risk of being a victim of burglary and he’ll most probably decide to move on.

gateS & FeNCeS If your gate is open or broken, an opportunist thief will see it as an invitation. Always close your gate. If it’s broken – fix it. And if you don’t have one, get one. It’s the first psychological barrier to keeping a burglar away. A weak or low fence can make gaining access to the rear of your property much easier. Sturdy 6ft fences make the task a little harder and thorny hedges such as Hawthorne make a good deterrent. Gates should also be similarly sturdy and locked from the inside with a bolt that is out of reach as a minimum standard.

Did you know?

One of the first things a burglar will look for is your calendar. This tells them when will you be out of the house, so they can plan their next visit.

doN’t leave valuaBleS IN SIght Fitting blinds or net curtains will make it harder to see into your property. You might be proud of your 55” LED 3D TV but do you want to advertise it to an opportunist thief? Also do not leave a spare key lying around in a convenient location, it will be just as convenient for the average burglar too and will hand the house to them on a silver platter. If you have particularly valuable items such as jewellery or large sums of cash in the house then it is a good idea to purchase a safe which can be secured in place in a hidden location. Passports, unused credit cards, etc should also ideally be locked away.

good houSekeePINg Keep suitcases and bags in the loft, or with their handles tied together. Otherwise a thief will use those very bags to transport items out of your house. You can also chain up your wheelie bin to a fence away from your house. A burglar will stand on a wheelie bin to get into the first floor of your house. Furthermore, a wheelie bin is like a filing cabinet, so shred all your documents before you throw them away.

How Do Burglars Think? By understanding how a burglar thinks when they target a home will help you get ahead and develop good habits around the house in preventing burglaries. If the front of your house looks weak to an opportunist burglar, he can guarantee that the back of your house will be even weaker. As soon as a thief can get around to the back of your home, he knows he’s probably safe.

As soon as a burglar is in your house, whether he got in from the front or back, he’ll go to the front door with either a glass bottle or a broom. The thief will balance the bottle on the door handle. If the owner comes home, the bottle will fall off the handle and smash before they get inside. This gives the thief a warning sign and time to escape. Or he will jam the door shut with a broom. Again, this will give the intruder a sign and time to escape if the owner fails to get into their house easily.

Humans are creatures of habit and we inevitably keep our house and car keys near the front door or in a handbag and usually handbags are nearly always be left in the kitchen. Once a burglar is in your house, he’ll look for keys first. Then he’ll be looking to find out what your habits are. Your calendar will tell a thief everything about you, most families almost always have a calendar hanging in the kitchen. The thief will look for key dates – when you will be on holiday, when you have a dentist appointment – any clues about when you’re scheduled to be out of the house.

Page 12: Feb 2013 - Living Plus

Call us on 07833208953 to advertise www.facebook.com/livingplusuk Tell people you saw their ad in Living Plus

The next thing on a burglar’s list is to look for small items – non-bulky valuables that can be taken straight away. This might include jewellery, credit cards, bank statements and spare car keys. The thief will make a note of all the bulkier valuable items in your house – he’ll be planning to come back again to get these when he knows you’ll be out.

Now the burglar knows you. He knows what kind of person you are from the items in your house and he has your bank details to clone later. If the burglar has taken a spare set of keys to get into your house, he’ll normally trash it before leaving. When a homeowner returns to a messy house, they have to go through everything to see what’s missing. They’ll normally be concerned about expensive jewellery, antiques and items of sentimental value. Keys are one of the last things people think of and so often don’t realise they’re missing. So when a burglar returns to finish the job, it’ll normally be within 7 to 10 days of the first burglary and the locks have not been changed.

Bristol Water has joined with West Country Crimestoppers to launch an appeal with £4,000 cash reward to the first person who gives information to Crimestoppers which leads to the arrest and conviction of anybody committing a criminal act about bogus callers who pose as a Bristol Water representative, either on the doorstep or on the telephone.

Bogus callers, also known as ‘distraction burglars’ operate by turning up on your doorstep and aim to get into your home, distract you and steal your money or valuables.

Bristol Water spokesman Jeremy Williams said: “These heartless criminals prey on the elderly in particular and we want to do all we can to try to stop them. “Our advice to customers is to be on your guard and never let anyone inside until you have checked his or her ID card carefully.”

You can now help your neighbourhood to become a safer place by reporting any suspicious person posing as tradesmen trying to enter homes. Call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 at any time to give information about crime and criminals anonymously.

Tucked away in a quiet residential corner of Redland is The Kensington Arms, a pub that is very popular with local residents and a growing reputation for its food. On any weekday evening, it is not uncommon to see a number of customers seated in outdoor terrace, making passers-by just a little curious about this little pub. Affectionately known as “The Kenny” in the area, the pub is a little hard to find for those unfamiliar with the area. Nonetheless, the pub’s good location with plenty of street parking available.

When you enter the pub, you will notice a light and refreshing décor that is consistent with the bar occupying one half of the premises with the dining room occupying the other. The dining room seating is comfortable and cosy with a view of the open kitchen in the rear. The menu offers a good variety of Traditional British fare which is represented with some uncommon and enticing dishes, although we felt it could have benefited with a bit more choice. The staffs were friendly, knowledgeable and enthusiastic to make good recommendations on the seasonal specials.

The wine list had a good selection to choose from but as it was a Friday, I was feeling undecided between whether to have wine or beer. Our

server recommended a guest seasonal beer called Belhaven Robert Burns Ale, which was dark, sweet, malty and almost toffee-like that was simply delightful.

For the starter, I chose Oxtail ravioli and the portion was surprisingly bigger than what I expected. The rich-flavoured oxtail was perfectly parcelled in the ravioli and the tasty filling with the freshly made pasta was a wonderful starter. The other starter was Salt Cod Brandade, this winter bistro special was warm and comforting with a creamy filling that was great with crusty bread.

For the main course, I had Slow Cooked Ox Cheek with Shallot, Mushroom and Bacon, which was well-presented and appetising. The Ox Cheek was meltingly tender with a rich, deep flavour. This classic combination worked really well, except that the sauce was a little salty. The other main course was a Traditional Fish Pie, which was a easy choice for a Friday evening. The pie was filled succulent pieces of salmon, haddock, scallops, prawns and lots of parsley, wrapped in a savoury cream sauce under a fluffy cloud of mash potatoes, served with steamed kale on the side to give it the perfect balance.

Originally, I was planning to finish the meal with a helping of dessert but the portion were so exceedingly generous, that I decided to try the sweets in my next visit. Overall, the dinner was excellent with great food and service, dinner for two at £52 was quite reasonable and the Kensington Arms is highly recommended. All aspects of food, drink, service were sincere and thoughtful and this is why we should continue to make extra effort in supporting local independent restaurants as oppose to commercial chains.

Following his successes with revealing London s vanished architectural heritage in Lost London and Panoramas of Lost London, Philip Davies now turns his attention to London s conserved heritage, presenting an expert introductory essay followed by the most extraordinary collection of contemporary photographs of London s historic interiors ever published. London Hidden Interiors has one hundred and eighty examples which have been selected from a complete range of building types to convey the richness and diversity of London s architectural heritage and the secrets that lie within. It concentrates generally on the buildings and interiors that are lesser known and to which the public are not normally allowed the hidden and the unusual, the quirky and the eccentric, although there is space too for some of the better known. The careful composition, superb lighting and exposure of the images featured in this book are themselves a lesson in conservation, capturing the sense of these unique spaces whilst at the same time revealing the important architectural detail; Derek Kendall s photographs, perfectly reproduced, make this book a visual delight and a major contribution to the architectural history of London.

In 2001, the City of Bristol hosted the 10th IAAF World Half Marathon Championships alongside the Bristol Half Marathon. The runners who took part were able to follow in the footsteps of British legend Paula Radcliffe and Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia. Thousands of people turned out to watch Paula cross the finish line in the record-breaking time of 66 minutes 47 seconds and Gebrselassie take first place in the men’s race with an impressive time of 60 minutes 3 seconds.

In 2003, local veteran Nick Rose won the ‘Legends Challenge’ – a race within a race that saw top British Olympians Steve Cram, Tim Hutchings, Hugh Jones, Steve Jones and Mike McLeod compete against each other for the first time in nearly twenty years. It is worth mentioning that Steve Cram and Tim Hutchings have continued to run in the event – when their busy schedules allow !

Hugh Jones has also kept in touch as the official course measurer and Steve Brace who won the first Bristol half marathon in 1989 - has remained a good friend of the race and can usually be found helping on the Start and Finish line. Source: www.runbristol.com

Asparagus is full of vitamins A, B and

C, virtually fat-free, and full of fibre and

folic acid.

An 80g serving provides 60% of

the recommended daily allowance of folic acid, which

can help expectant mothers to stave off infection and boost

iron absorption. Folic acid is also

necessary for blood cell formation and

growth and has been shown to play a significant role in the prevention of

neural tube defects.

Also, asparagus is great for the heart,

boosts your immune system and cancer defences, great for

skin, nails and hair.

4. Rub the steaks with the oil, salt and pepper.

5. Grill the steaks on a hot barbeque for 2 minutes on each side so that they’re medium rare. Leave to rest.

6. While the beef is resting rub the British asparagus with a little oil then lay on the barbeque grill for 2-3 minutes, turning every now and then until they start to soften but still have ‘bite’ and have little chars on them.

7. Split the asparagus between two plates. Carve the steaks into 1cm strips and lay on top of the Asparagus pouring over the meat juices left from resting.

9. Cover each steak with a few tablespoons of Teriyaki sauce and sprinkle with the Togerashi if using and sesame seeds.
