Join the race against educational disadvantage: Run 10k for Schools Plus! About Schools Plus Educational disadvantage remains one of the most destructive and pervasive problems in the UK. 13% of children in the UK live in severe poverty, while 21% are eligible for Free School Meals. Only 36% of pupils entitled to free school meals achieve 5 GCSEs at C or above, including English and Maths (compared to 63% of pupils who are not eligible) and a mere 16% go on to university (compared to 96% of children from independent schools). Schools Plus trains university students who are passionate and knowledgeable about their subjects as tutors and mentors for school pupils from difficult backgrounds who are struggling to meet their attainment grades in order to help break the cycle of disadvantage. In one-to-one or small group settings, our 700 volunteer students tutor 1,500 primary and secondary school pupils in 13 subjects (including English, History, Languages, Maths, Sciences, Art, Music and more) — supporting them to reach their academic potential and aspire to more. Currently, we deliver the Schools Plus programme through our Hubs in Bristol, Imperial, Oxford, Oxford Brookes, Southampton and Winchester. While these cities are well-known for their leading universities, they also have high levels of inequality with areas of significant deprivation. Bristol faces huge socio-economic challenges: a quarter of children in Bristol live in poverty, more than in any other part of the South West. This deprivation leads to educational disadvantage (only 22.9% of children eligible for Free School Meals in Bristol attained 5 A*-C GCSEs compared to 50.6% of their peers who are not eligible), and tends to prevent these pupils from knowing about and pursuing Further and Higher Education opportunities. Bristol Hub Schools Plus supports 650 pupils at 2 primary and 2 secondary schools in the city, in the subjects of English, Maths, Spanish, Art, Citizenship, Environment and Science — inspiring the children and young people to gain interest, knowledge and confidence in their studies and reach their potential despite their difficult backgrounds. and we can really relate to them. They have also given me lots of advice on
