Module #2: IntroductionThe Classroom Environment – Managing Student Behavior

Appropriate student behavior is essential for optimal learning to take place. Behavior expectations must be explicitly taught, modeled, practiced, recognized, corrected appropriately and retaught. Consistency by the teacher is essential, otherwise there will be confusion and classroom chaos. In a classroom managed in an exemplary fashion, students take ownership of management roles and actively monitor their own behavior as well as the behavior of other students. Teacher management can be subtle and sensitive, being respectful in correction and re-teaching opportunities.

Expectations are clear to all students Expectations are consistently implemented and monitored Behavior is monitored by all stakeholders Teacher response to misbehavior is effective and sensitive

Definitions: Expectations: establishing clear ground

rules in the classroom. Rules need to be simple and positive: how we expect each other to act, rather than rules about “no.” Kids do a lot better when it’s clear how they’re expected to behave, rather than how not to behave. And rules should always be easy to follow.

Definitions:Monitoring Student Behavior:It is important to monitor student behavior to "catch" students being good and provide acknowledgement for the appropriate behavior. Monitoring allows staff to intervene early for misbehavior and redirect and correct inappropriate behavior. Monitoring also allows staff to collect ongoing information on student behavior.

Active monitoring means that you will… Move in a purposeful manner using unpredictable patterns of

movement Scan the environment and making eye contact with students Make positive social contact with students Provide acknowledgement for students engaging in positive

behaviors 4:1 positive cues to re-teaching to maintain behavior. 7:1 positive cues to re-teaching to change behavior.

Definitions:Teacher responses to misbehavior: The overarching goal is to keep the focus on learning, while maintaining a classroom that's physically and emotionally safe for all. To achieve this, responses to misbehavior should: Stop the misbehavior and reestablish positive behavior

as quickly as possible Maintain students’ dignity Develop students’ self-control and self-regulation skills Help students recognize and fix any harm caused by

their mistakes Demonstrate that rules help make the classroom a safe

place where all can learn
