A s you read this I will probably be doing one of two things – lying in thesun on a Turkish beach, or hiding from the sun and applying soothingunguents to calm burnt skin.

After almost a month of art and entertainment, this break, which we willcall both holiday and honeymoon, is more than welcome. Much as I love myarts, it can all get just a bit too much. There were moments when I really hadno idea what or where I was meant to be or to be seeing.

I started going to the theatreand to concerts when I wasabout 11 years old. Luckily I wentto a school where art and theatrewere seen to be good things andpart of the process of makingwell rounded young people.

I was also lucky enough togrow up close to Liverpool,where both the Playhouse andThe Everyman had alreadystarted to create great modernand accessible theatre.

Of course, we were taken on coaches, inschool uniform and we were under strictinstructions to behave. It would appear bytoday’s standards to have been somewhatdraconian but it taught me a very usefullesson. That lesson was how to be anaudience member.

This year’s festival found mecomplaining about a child who cried in aclassical concert and was clearly fartoo young to be there. But what istoo young? The concert wasambiguously titled to sound likeit might be a children’s event, butit really was not. It was also acelebration of childhood, so howsad that I wanted a child to beexcluded. I suffered such conflicts over thisone, but at the end of the day felt saddest that the performance washampered by the disturbance.

I would hate to think that a child would be barred from going to a concertbut I would also like to think that a parent would know how to make theright decision. I’m not a parent so some of you may think that I shouldn’thave an opinion, but I am audience and I do have an opinion. I applaud themfor taking the kids to experience live music. I berate them for not leavingwhen the disturbance became invasive.

Figures released last week bythe Office of National Statisticsshow that youth unemployment(16–24 year olds) is at nearrecord levels, but the award-winning housebuilder is

offering around 20 promisingyoungsters the chance to beginforging a career.

This year’s recruitment drive inEngland and Wales follows on fromRedrow’s successful apprenticescheme in 2010, when thecompany took on 50 new trainees,more than double the numbers forthe previous two years combined.

One of those candidates wasAlex Frostick, 18, from Bracknell,who is nearly a year into a three-year plumbing apprenticeship withRedrow. He divides his time

between studying at AldershotCollege, where he is workingtowards a level 2 NVQ, and working on site at Jennett’s Park, in Bracknell.

He said: “I’m really enjoying myapprenticeship and it’s teaching melots of things I wouldn’t be able tolearn in the classroom. It’s real lifework and you have to takeeverything on board that you arebeing taught so you can do the workto a high standard. I’m lookingforward to gaining newqualifications and full-timeemployment in the housing industry in the future.”

Redrow believes apprenticeshipsare a key component formaintaining a skilled workforce and

thus securing a successful futurefor the house building industry.

Karen Jones, HR director forRedrow, says: “It is vital for ourindustry that we continue to investin training, even during testingeconomic times, to ensure we donot experience a skills shortage inyears to come.”

Ihad high hopes for theSackville Hotel in 2004when its owners

announced refurbishmentplans with a view toregaining its five-starstatus. The buildingmysteriously collapsed in2006 during the works.

The empty site has satin a state of dreadfulnessever since it was swiftlycleared of debris. Like alldevelopment sites around Brightonand Hove (including severaleyesores on the West Hoveseafront), each planning applicationis an opportunity to create themodern equivalent of thearchitectural triumphs of the past.

Previous seafront triumphsinclude a number of groundbreakingarchitectural treats. 1798 saw thecommencement of the constructionof Brighton’s first unifiedcomposition, Royal Crescent,consisting of a series of Georgiantownhouses faced with blackmathematical tiles on the easternseafront. Brunswick Town and Kemp Town followed during the 1820s as self-contained Regency settlements. The yellow-brick West Brighton Estate ofGrand Avenue and its neighbouring boulevards followed during the 1870s asa fine example of late Victorian splendour.

Not a single one of these developments did not borrow ideas frombuildings of the past. Indeed, the Regency style is essentially a Georgiantake on the buildings of ancient Greece and Roman. But each developmentwas true to the style of the day.

Representing the best of the Edwardian period, The Lawns was built on theHove seafront in 1904 as a terrace of four glorious townhouses. By the 1920s,they had become a hotel which eventually became the Sackville Hotel.

A planning application was recently submitted for five new townhouses onthe site with a detached house behind. Although I do not support the proposedcommunal underground car park, I am certainly in favour of the generalconcept of individual houses on the site. There is a problem though.

The architect in question, Alan Phillips, appears to have abandoned all ofhis principles to hoodwink the neighbours into supporting a scheme that ‘fitsin’. Instead of pushing for a graceful and respectable design in the style of ourday, he has opted for a box with, essentially, a fake Regency house stuck onthe front. The Regency period began in June 1811 – that’s 200 years ago!

Giving Brighton and Hove a poor quality Neo-Regency building in apredominantly Victorian and Edwardian area insults our intelligence. L ess than 24 hours ago, I returned from a four day break in Morocco. Ihave to say, after all the long haul flights I’ve clocked up over the pastfew years, it was rather nice to sit on a plane for less than four hours.

Alas our return flight was far from efficient and was delayed by four hours.This made the whole experience more of a long-haul affair, which our free (yetquite stale) pain au chocolate doled out by the airline did nothing to enhance.Worse still, our flight had been scheduled to leave at 8.30am and didn’tactually leave until midday, meaning we could have languished in bed for amuch needed couple of extra hours. We were both feeling rather jaded, havingdecided to try and finish our duty free bottle of Bison grass vodka on the lastnight, an endeavour in which we achieved great success.

It was nice to be back inMarrakech, which – according tothe stamp on my passport – Ihaven’t visited for four years.Nothing has changed and inspite of the recent terroristattack in the Jemaa El Fna, it’svery much business as usual. Itravelled with my friend Mrs M,with whom I ran the inauguralBrighton marathon last year. Fortunately, she’s as much of an exercise freakas I am, so we managed to go running every day, both in Marrakech andEssaouira, where we spent a couple of days. Going out for a run in Marrakechis not an easy task and it was nice to have someone with whom to avoid thekamikaze traffic and wild dogs during my morning manoeuvres. At one point,we had to change direction rather quickly, as Mrs M spotted a man doing apoo in the middle of the path.

I’ve been to Morocco quite a few times and have a friend in Essaouira calledBilal. Unfortunately, his mobile number doesn’t work any more, so I spentquite a lot of time in Essaouira trying to track him down. This generallyinvolved going into a dauntingly male-only parade of very spit-and-sawdustestablishments and leaving notes for him in each one. All the bartenders Ispoke to knew him well and one of them even had the same telephone numberfor him as I did. Alas, everywhere I went, I seemed to have missed him byabout two hours, which is a shame, but at least I know he’s still alive, in spiteof the amount he seems to be drinking.

I enjoy a drink as much as anyone, but just lately I’ve been drinking waymore than I’d like for no other reason but to hang out with The New Boyfriend.Therefore, before I went to Marrakech I decided to end the relationship as Irealised that I wanted my old life back more than I wanted him. I think I mightbe growing up at last...

I ’ve been writing this column a while. In fact, I can exclusively print here anextract from an early Distracted Dad: “Out hunting for mammoth with TheBoy and Youngest™, although this was delayed as The Boy wanted to stay

in the cave and ‘do drawing’. Eventually, made it out with the importantequipment (spears, provisions, nappies, raisins). The Boy kept discussingwhich creatures were his favourite, thus disturbing the beast. Did make acapture and brought it back to the cave, but Youngest™ made such a fuss wehad to stay outside. Eventually, did get into cave but only after we allowedYoungest™ to hoard all eating implements while he went to sleep. Eventuallysettled down to supper of prize mammoth. The Boy said he preferred chicken.”

Of course, back then this magazine wasn’t published as Latest Homes, butLatest Caves (“now incorporating Mud Hut Monthly” – OK, so I’m playing fastand loose with early human history). I say published; it involved the editorstanding by some shrubbery pointing at various caves, while the deputyeditor’s job was to keep a look out for woolly mammoths. Er...anyway, theextract continues:

“Next day, woke up to findwe’re lacking in huntingweapons. The Boy has brokenthem up to make an intricatesculpture of a made-upmonster. Youngest™ has gotwound up because he wantedto touch said sculpture andThe Boy wouldn’t let him.Youngest’s™ yelling hasattracted the attention of asabre-tooth tiger, which Iwould attack if I had weapons,but they’re being used in thesculpture. Luckily, Youngest™gets so annoyed, theaforementioned beast skulksoff – for the moment.”

Is this how it went? Kidsoften go against their owninterests, which seems to beanti-evolution. How did thosegenes thrive? A child willoften make such a fusswhen you’re trying to lookafter them, e.g. stepping outin front of the number 2 bus/ sabre-toothed tiger (* delete as applicable) thatI can’t see how that trait would survive, evolutionally-speaking. Often, theyactively prevent you from helping them. This is sometimes OK in today’smore cosseted environment, but if they did that in Neanderthal times, surelythey would have been thrown out of the gene pool.

On the other hand, you’ve only got to have kids to believe in evolution andsee the proof that a high percentage of their DNA is shared with other animals.Through the course of a day they demonstrate their affinity with a monkey, asloth, even a bed bug. However, their regular resistance to a change ofenvironment makes it hard to believe they ever made it out of the swamp.

I ’ve been looking afterfriends’ babies. I nowknow how my mother felt

after handing her mydaughter for an afternoon. Icouldn’t work out why shelooked so worried, like she’dnever looked after a childbefore. But she was right,you do forget everything.I’m suddenly rememberingthe blur of that first year ofmotherhood, where it wasall poo and goo... and gin. Iconsider my five year old asa baby, but she’s not! “I amnot a baby!” Nope, she isnot a baby. She can wipeher own bum and feedherself. She can, if needed,even get the biscuit tinherself. Sure, she’ll probablyfall off the stool attemptingit but she can do it. Babies,I had forgotten, can’t doanything! I had forgottenhow they need holdingconstantly, feeding with a spoon and I had forgotten how many times theyneed their nappy changing. One of my friends has the cutest baby ever, Icould stare at her little gorgeous face for hours. I wander around the shopswith her in a sling, people presume she is mine. I don’t bother to correctshopkeepers etc, so I end up discussing her appetite and sleep patternswith these strangers. They say: “You enjoy it! They grow so quick!” I knowhow quickly they grow, mine is nearly five years old! And I am alreadyworrying about when she’ll stop wanting to do raspberries on my arm, ordoesn’t want to hold my hand down the road. (Cry.) Guess it would be a bitweird if she didn’t want to ever stop holding hands... Imagine me and my25-year-old daughter holding hands, walking down the street in Brightonlooking like a lesbian couple with a large age gap of 33 years. We’d probablybe offered our own US chat show. The money would be so lucrative we’d endup living a lie just to keep me in Tena Ladies. I can see now why mothernature knows what it’s doing. It is best there will come a time when shedoesn’t want to hold my hand. But can we still do raspberries? No-onegrows out of them, do they? I hope things will change gradually, but I willmiss this age. She still talks in a baby voice and would prefer to be tickledfor an hour rather than attend any after school club. I know next schoolyear she will be out of ‘reception’ and into proper school and everything willbe about other people. It’ll all be about ferrying her to friends’ houses andactivities in sports halls. I won’t be the epicentre of her life any more.Unlike these babies... I wonder if I am broody, but the baby cries so loudlywhen I go for a wee that I end up having to hold her even then and I realisehow nice it is that children evolve...
