Aspecial auction of children’s artworktook place in Brighton on Friday 18July in aid of Macmillan Cancer

Support, raising £2,200 for the charity.Leaders have pledged to raise £25,000 intotal for them this year.

Leaders hosted the auction as part ofits popular annual art competition, inwhich school children of all ages wereinvited to ‘Create a Masterpiece forMacmillan’ – a picture of anything in anymedium with the aim of it being goodenough to auction.

The best pictures were put on displayat Leaders’ Western Road branch.Auctioneer Nick Muston from Austin Gray,who kindly volunteered to run the auction,encouraged everyone to dig deep forMacmillan ... and they did not disappoint.

A number of the pictures attracted keeninterest – in particular a striking painting ofcolourful beach huts by Izzy Willet, age 13,from Dorothy Stringer High School. Afternumerous bids were placed, the painting wassold for £310, the highest bid of the evening.

David Thorne, Leaders’ Brighton and HoveSenior Branch Manager, said: “Thank you toeveryone who supported our auction and raffle,and a big thank you to all the children whosefantastic artwork was sold. We are delighted tohave raised such a great sum of money.”

By 2030, the number of people living with(and beyond) cancer in Sussex will fill Brightonand Hove Albion’s football stadium nearly fourand a half times. Macmillan needs to raise£3.7million to fund the Sussex MacmillanCancer Support Centre in Brighton. Set to openin the summer/autumn of 2014, it will providevital support to the ever-increasing number ofpeople living with cancer in Sussex.

T he average house price across England and Wales stood at £172,011 inJune, the Land Registry has reported. The figure means that houseprices rose just 0.1% from May, but were up 6.4% from June 2013.

The average house price is still below the peak of November 2007 whenthe Land Registry reported it at £181,466.

In London, the average houseprice was 16.4% higher than theprevious year, at £437,608.

Noticeably, in all but threeareas, house prices went downbetween May and June. They rosein the west midlands by 1.9% andwere up 0.6% in the south-eastand 0.1% in London, buteverywhere else, they fell.

The biggest falls were in thesouth-west (0.9%), east midlands(1%), north-east (1%) and Yorkshire and the Humber (1.3%).

The number of property transactions has jumped to an average of£65,679 a month between January and April – the last period for which datais available.

The figure is up from an average of 48,597 house sales for the sameperiod last year. Amessage on Harveys’ ownwebsite from their Head Brewer,Miles Jenner, points out that the

waiting list for tours of Lewes’ famousbrewery has now exceeded two years.I was incredibly lucky, therefore, toreceive a personal tour of the placethat he quite clearly loves to bits fromMr Jenner himself.

After a spot of lunch with Miles atthe John Harvey Tavern nearby, ourtour started alongside the red-brickbrewery buildings, above the pointwhere water is tapped from deepbelow ground. ‘AQUA HARVAE’ is theinscription on an attractive octagonalstructure dating from 2010, aboveone of the wells. Getting the freshwater to the top of the brewery’sdistinctive Gothic tower is the firststep in the brewing process.

Harveys dates back to the late 18th century,when John Harvey was a wine and spiritmerchant in the Lewes area. After operatingas a brewer nearby, he purchased thecurrent site in 1838 for £3,100. HamishElder, a seventh generation descendent, iscurrently Chairman and Joint MD (alongsideMiles). An eighth generation relative, ZoëPrescott, works for the company too. Milesjoined in 1980 as Third Brewer aftergraduating in History a few years earlier. Hewas Head Brewer by 1986 and follows in thefootsteps of his father, Anthony Jenner.

I’d love to write more about the tour but space here doesn’t permit it.Essentially, once water reaches a large tank at the top of the main tower, gravitytakes it through the next steps which include mashing with malted barley (in a‘mash tun’), boiling with hops, fermenting and barrelling (in steel barrels – woodwas withdrawn during the 1970s). The ‘macaroni head’ at the fermenting stagewas particularly memorable, as was the view inside the empty ‘coppers’. Tuesdayto Friday are brewing days, with cleaning on Mondays.

There are no doubt pros and cons to running an advanced brewing businessfrom a listed historic building. Such a structure is highly challenging to bothmodify and maintain. Serious effort was made during the 1980s, for example, toadd a tower-like protrusion so that capacity could be doubled. The result isfantastic, and the new part looks quite at home on Harveys’ marketing materialthroughout Sussex, Surrey and Kent.

The effectiveness of the building itself as an advert shouldn’t beunderestimated – which is backed up by the lack of signage on the firm’smodern distribution yard [email protected]

W orking on the pier has added a further dimension to my life andintroduced me to a whole, new group of mad people with whom to goout and party. This is not good, as I am meant to be saving money

towards a mammoth 50th birthday party next year, and all the money I earnon the pier finds its way, more or less immediately, into the tills of assortedBrighton hostelries.

Last week, with no early start at the supermarket, or the pier, I went outwith my fellow ‘piers’, and spent enough money to ensure that I vaulted overthe handlebars of my bike amid a crowd of irritating Spanish foreign studentson East Street. Miraculously, both I and my bike seemed remarkablyunscathed (I can’t speak for the foreign students, but that’ll teach them towalk on the pavement) and I teetered off – Patsy style – into the wee hours.Although I felt no pain, three days later my arse could’ve given Chi Chi (thegiant panda) a run for her money.

Although I am going to the same bar tonight, I do not intend to repeat thesame mistake I made last week. My bike will remain firmly chained up at thepier, leaving far less to happenstance.

As you can see, I’m a classy lady when I go out, so it’s rather worrying thattomorrow night I am going to the red carpet premiere of the new ‘Inbetweeners’movie in Leicester Square, London. A good friend of mine (also prone to thrills,then spills) is an integral part of the making of said film and has (rather ill-advisedly, if you ask me) chosen me to accompany her on this glamour-filledouting. Although I’m practically rigid with excitement, I suspect that her choiceof ‘plus one’ is heavily anticipatory of the fact that I will fall over/vomit/make abigger tit of myself than she will, thus eclipsing her in the embarrassmentstakes. After all, she has to go back to work on Monday morning, whereas I canfade back into obscurity at the supermarket and on the pier.

We have already decided what we shall be wearing – she a sack, and I a fittedsack with Spanx underneath for added ballast. Worse still, my choice of shoes(Betsey Johnson pink sparkles with six inch heels) will make it almost certainthat there will be a bit of a fracas on the red carpet. Furthermore, my friend hassuggested meeting for ‘a spot of Dutch Courage’ prior to the screening.

Fortunately for me, this column is written a week in advance, so I’ve noneed to beg you not to watch News At Ten tomorrow night. LOL.
