Hot on the heels of plans fromthe Centurion Group to createa whole new twitten in
Brighton’s famous Lanes comes aproposal from Alaska DevelopmentConsultants to turn the derelictHippodrome into an eight-screencinema. The building began as anice-rink in 1897, and became theHippodrome when it was convertedinto a variety theatre by thefamous architect Frank Matcham in1901. Its name presumably comesfrom its equestrian capability. Adedicated horse entrance leads tothe stage, and is said to be the onlysurviving example in the country.Although it said to have once beenby an elephant on the Hippodrome’sopening night, the name actuallycomes from ‘hippo’ – the Greekword for elephant.
After a period of use as a bingohall since 1967, the Hippodromeclosed in 2007, and has sat derelictever since. Just as cinemas andtheatres fell out of favour too asthe Astoria on Gloucester Place andGranada on Portland Road in Hovefound out, bingo halls did too. TheGranada is now gone and theAstoria’s Grade II listed status isunlikely to save it. The Grade II*listed Hippodrome is too important to lose but making a scheme workfinancially will be difficult. In 2010, Academy Music Group, the building’sleaseholder, suggested that soundproofing alone would cost around £3 million.
The current plans are no doubt innovative. The £20 million proposal includesthe sensitive installation of cinema spaces over the Hippodrome’s auditorium. A large area would be left between the cinema and the highly decorated ceiling.This area would become a restaurant and café where customers would be able to see the ornate ceiling up-close. The plans would see the building restored andnew pedestrian areas created between Middle Street, Ship Street and Dukes Lane.
Rather fittingly, bearing in mind the Hippodrome’s equestrian history, thebuilding was bought by Cheval Properties in 2007 in a deal that included DukesLane. The Hippodrome was leased to Academy Music Group with the intention ofcreating a concert venue. Alaska Development is now working with VueEntertainment and Russ Drage architects on the latest proposal.
In principle, I am in favour of the scheme. Continued usage is key to the long-term survival of any building. Thst said, any proposals involving majoralterations to the Hippodrome’s interior must be reversible.www.buildingopinions.com [email protected]

A fter I’d recovered from the rather strange car journey to my new home in atiny Turkish village, I was keen to go out and buy some furniture so I couldactually sleep there. I looked in one furniture shop, where the assistant
followed me around so closely that I almost offered her a piggy back. It wouldhave been handy that she was there if I had any questions, but it transpiredthat she couldn’t speak any English and I can’t speak Turkish, so she couldn’tanswer my questions anyway. Luckily, my friend B from the village was with meand she speaks good Turkish, so we managed to jointly decide that the shopwas too expensive and moved onto the next one up the road.
The next shop was a resounding success and I purchased the first item I saw– a lovely sofa bed and a bed and mattress too, giving me a choice of things tosleep on. Even though it was a public holiday and his delivery man had gonehome, the owner promised that he would deliver it to my little house one and ahalf hours later. We then realised that we didn’t know the address of the littlehouse, so B had to draw amap so the delivery drivercould find it. I was fairlydubious whether it wouldactually arrive, but sureenough on the dot of 5pm,two men came marchingthrough my front gate withmy sofa bed. Before theyentered the house, theytook their shoes off! Thiswas quite alarming as I’mused to the traditionalBritish ways of arriving latethen trampling filth allthrough the house.
I slept very well, fallingasleep to the sound of dogsbarking across the valleyand waking briefly at 5amto the mystical sound ofthe mosque. Rather lesspleasant was the sound ofthe rooster next door, whosounded like the featheredequivalent of a bad contestant on The X Factor.
I had connected my gas canister the previous night – a very exciting moment– and boiled myself a couple of eggs for breakfast. As I sat in the yard relaxingover a coffee, a man smoking a fag strolled past leading a horse.
A few minutes later, my friend B and her husband T popped round with theirdogs, so I made them a coffee. T is a fabulous character, but he is a ‘doer’ andcan’t sit still if DIY needs to be done. He’s helped me endlessly with the house,changing locks here and fixing faulty electrics there. Rather than to sit anddrink his coffee, he set about ‘checking’ that I’d connected the gas properly. Allof a sudden, there was a loud, fairly ominous hissing sound and he calmlyasked B to help him move the canister outside as it was ‘faulty’. Once they’dwrested the canister into the yard, T took his finger away from the valve andlitres of gas pumped out at an alarming pressure. Thinking that it mightexplode, T rolled it out of the gate and let it roll down the hill and into the field atthe bottom, where it continued to spew out high pressured gas for 15 longminutes. Lucky that the man smoking had already passed by really.

Time Regulations provide that any payment in lieu shall be eithercalculated by way of the usualstatutory formula or as set out in an agreement between employer and employee. The Tribunal took theview that because the agreement inthat particular case provided for nopayment whatsoever it fell foul of theWorking Time Regulations becausethey require “a sum” to be paid and“no sum” is not a sum! In otherwords the employer still had to paynormal holiday pay despite what wasin the Contract of Employment.
Q. Although I dismissed this man forgross misconduct i.e. dishonesty, I still gave him 28 days noticebecause that is what the Contractof Employment provided. In fact I
Q. I own a small business andrecently had to dismiss an employeefor falsifying his timesheets so thathe received more pay than he wasproperly entitled to receive. He didnot appeal against that decision. He is now claiming that I should havepaid him a sum in lieu of holidaysnot taken during the holiday year. Do I have to pay him in view of thefact I dismissed him for dishonesty?
A. It depends what is in his Contractof Employment. In one reported case an employee’s Contract ofEmployment provided that in theevent of him being dismissed fordishonesty he would forfeit anypayment in lieu of unused holiday.The Tribunal decided that clause wasnull and void because the Working
paid him 28 days in lieu. Did I haveto do that?
A. No you did not. If he was dismissedfor gross misconduct he should bedismissed with immediate effect andis not entitled to notice or payment inlieu of notice. In fact to give him noticeor pay him in lieu of notice could beinterpreted by a Tribunal at a laterdate as an indication that you are notentirely convinced yourself that whathe did amounted to gross misconduct.In turn this could cause you credibilityproblems with a Tribunal. However, inyour case it seems that he acceptedthat he was guilty of grossmisconduct and therefore he was notentitled to be paid in lieu but I suspectthe prospects of obtaining moneyback from him are slim!
