choice. But do we all have the luxury of free spacethat can be dedicated to being used as a homeoffice? The answer could well be yes. Domesticspace comes at a price these days and few of uswill have a home that has an available room thatcan be used as a dedicated office. That can oftenmean cramming a desk into the corner of yourliving space or even a bedroom or kitchen – hardlyideal when you need peace to be able to work.
Harrison James have come up with a solutionfor one client who needed just that. You may wellremember seeing them on these pages quiterecently. They are the team that build those rathersmart garden buildings, the ones that helped youshed the idea of garden sheds.

There is in fact only one right angle in the wholebuilding, with a curved back wall and the wholething meets at a point by the back gate. They reallydid have to maximise the amount of available spacehe had. At the same time it had to look good andwith aluminium bi-fold doors opening on to acomposite deck, an environmentally friendlyproduct made from recycled carrier bags, whichthey also built it really does have style.
“The deck looks great and will never rot or fadeand it really does add to the success of the wholebuild. Our client is delighted with the result andloves his new office”.
And so he should, the level of design input andtechnical excellence is second to none. This 9.2square metre building has an EPDM rubber roofand is fully insulated. The exterior is clad inCanadian red cedar and it has aluminium bi-folddoors. Inside the interior is plastered and paintedand there is an oak effect laminate floor.
There is aPart P certificated mains electricalconnectionwith eight double sockets, ten spotlights and the main IT hub has three cat 6 cablepoints along the desk. There is also co-axialcabling for TV and an alarm system. Outside thecomposite decking is illuminated by exterior LEDlights in the step.
So how complex was the job? “Well we had toremove the existing decking that was in thegarden before starting work on the building. Oncethat was done the whole job took only three weeksfrom start to finish. Possibly less time thanarranging a lease on an office and certainly lesstime than you would need to buy one. There wasabsolutely no disruption to his house and to hisfamily and as he was working from home already,no disruption to his business. All in all it was hugesuccess for him and for us”.
Clearly Harrison James are not only great atbuilding these garden rooms, let’s not mistakethem for sheds, but beyond that build qualitythey are great at coming up with solutions foreven the most complex and difficult of situations.

Voyage of discovery
My story is a sentimental yarn of apassionate sailor, sailing off to newhorizons, an amazing house, which in time
became a formidable teacher. Epic adventureshave taught me to find peace within. Who sayshouses are not sentimental?
It all began here in Brighton, in the winter of 2001,on the stormy seas of the south east coast. I hadtaken it upon myself to have an adventure, I hadbought a sailing boat with £1,000 and zero sailingexperience. I decided to brave the stormy Novemberseas of the English Channel, not knowing where itwould lead to, setting off in the rough direction ofThe Mediterranean.
I remember the look offear on loved ones faces, Istill recall one or twowondering if they wouldever see me again. I wasnot sure myself, I justknew I wanted to go south.After a scary few days inthe English Channel I wasmost relieved to find theenchanting French port ofHonfleur, jewel of theNormandy coast, and I imeediately fell in love withthis rustic charming part of the world. Onwardsouth I set my course, up along the magical river banks of the Seine,delighted to embrace Paris. Little did I know that I was on my way to becoming ‘The Painting Pirate’and even more fantastically, a father, not tomention master to ‘The Lodge’, an amazing six-bedroom country house, which would become hostto a retreat centre for art and yoga, eventuallybringing me an inner peace that my wild, recklessheart could only have dreamt of at that time.
My career is now taking me overseas once more,as my path calls. My voyage of discovery beginsits second part. Meanwhile, The Lodge requires anew master – custodian to helm and skipper thisamazing house onwards to its next adventure.

Despite itsidyllic location, nestled into the valley, the house isvery accessible with the ferry port of Dieppe only15 miles away (from £30 ferry to the UK). Locally,there is a choice of four charming villages, all withamenities including banks, post offices,boulangerie epicerie, patisserie and evensupermarkets. The beach is only 20 minutes away,with an amazing surf spot and empty beaches.Further afield is the famed Cathedral city of Rouenonly half an hour with rail links five minutes fromthe house. Day trips can also be easily planned toParis, which is less than two hours away.
This truly has been anamazing homestead for myadventure in France. I have hosted many friends andhad wonderful family holidays over the last 12 years.That time is over. Is this now your time?
