Whether you areselling your homeor a property youare letting,
bringing your property to theattention of investorlandlords is a novel way totap into a valuable hiddenmarket. According to propertyspecialist Leaders, manysellers, and even estateagents, overlook the fact thatthere are a large number ofpotential buy-to-let investorswaiting for the right investment opportunity but are not necessarily active on Rightmove, orother portals.

Nature is key to the attractiveness tovisitors of Dungeness in Kent. Thepeninsula does hold thedesignations of NNR, SPA, SAC
and SSSI after all. The power stations – one in operation, the other defunct – are of interest to many as well, as are thelighthouses and miniature railway. I went principally for the architecture.
As Britain’s only desert (according to the Met Office), Dungeness really is afascinating place. It is characterised by an
expanse of shingle, a scattering of windswept plants and a peppering oflow detached buildings. It does havesimilarities with Shoreham Beachwhich also features plants such as rock samphire and sea kale. Moreinterestingly, railway carriage homeswere once common on ShorehamBeach and still are at Dungeness.
The most famous home atDungeness is perhaps ProspectCottage, a traditional tarred fisherman’shouse, which belonged to the late film director and gay rights activistDerek Jarman. Its shingle garden is of national importance. As abeekeeper myself, I was wondering what the short-haired bumblebee(Bombus subterraneus) makes of itfollowing its reintroduction to Dungenessafter extinction in this country.
There are around one hundred homes atDungeness and the rules governing changeare strict. New buildings suit the landscapeperfectly and offer a refreshing change tothe white-rendered rubbish that isspringing up indiscriminately acrossBrighton and Hove.
The Pobble House by architect GuyHolloway is a curiosity and featuresweathered larch alongside corten steelmesh. The Black Rubber House by SimonConder Associates is a rebuilt fisherman’scottage with larch plywood and rubber (a modern take on tar). The Shingle House by NORD appears as a row of tarred gabled sheds – and is actually tarred this time.

Christmas and New Year are a pairof idiots. They are big, fat, cynicalidiots who make you eat too much,drink too much and spend too
much money. As if we don’t all do toomuch of that anyway. This year, although Ireined in my Bah-Humbugness enough tojust about cope with Christmas Day, Imanaged to swerve the drunken fool thatis New Year’s Eve entirely, opting for anearly meal at home with The Boyfriend
and lights out by 11.50pm, although fireworks (of the pyrotechnicalkind) kept me awake enough to see in the New Year.
In the run-up to Christmas, I had a few business errands to run thatinvolved an unfortunate and deeply irritating trip into town to buysome new lamp shades for the communal hallway of my flat inHastings. A couple of years ago, we had the communal hall nicelydecorated – it had been painted orange and brown since the 1970s –and splashed out on new lampshades for the lights. Unfortunately, oneof the tenants has stolen acouple of the lampshades(!) so Ihad to brave a chain store inChurchill Square in order to buythe same shades. Needless tosay, I was already pretty p****doff before I’d even set foot intoChurchill Square (four daysbefore Christmas, gggrrrr).Imagine a tenant who consideredthemselves too needy to buy their own lampshades, yet not so needythat they couldn’t afford a ladder long enough to reach their quarry.
The trip into town did nothing to alleviate my anger as I battledthrough crowds of jolly Christmas shoppers to the front of a very longqueue, only to find that they no longer had the lamp shades in stock;they would have to be ordered.
I finally collected theshades in the relativecalm of January andwent over to Hastingsyesterday, only to findthat while stealing theshades, the tenant hadactually broken thelight fittings, so now Ihave to hire anelectrician to fix them... which is more thanBah Humbug. At leastit’s not still Christmas!
