REAL ESTATE SHOWCASE

Counter CultureBy Jessica AbelsCTW Features

In recent years, outdoor kitchens have takenthe backyard barbecue from low-key to luxe, and the latest innovations in design are noexception. “The staycation and all of that hasbeen very popular for some time, but whatwe’re seeing now is that people are reallyinvesting the money to make those outdoorareas as comfortable as the indoor areas,” saysPatrick Byrne, executive vice president atRoanoke, Va.-based Atlantis OutdoorKitchens.

According to Byrne, outdoor kitchen designis becoming even bigger and more elaborate.“They’re bigger than many indoor kitchens,” hesays, noting that intricate details like archedvalances, fluted columns and advancedstonework are popping up, along with addedcounter space.

“Kitchens are more packed with featuresand functionality,” says Russ Faulk, an instruc-tor with the National Kitchen and BathAssociation’s continuing education programand a vice president at Kalamazoo, Mich.-based Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet. “Whereat one time it was pretty much a grill, a sinkand a cabinet, then a refrigerator became pret-ty standard, then an ice maker became prettystandard, now we’re seeing, according to a sur-vey by the National Association ofHomebuilders, I think it was almost 60 per-cent of designers, builders and architects sur-

veyed said a wine chiller was a must-have fea-ture in an outdoor kitchen.”

In addition to kitchens expanding, Faulkalso says a major trend is in fully shelteredkitchens.

Many homeowners want to use their spacesyear-round, so Faulk says they are opting forpavilion style shelters with open walls. In mos-quito-prone climates, removable screens aregreat for keeping springtime insects at bay, hesays.

Pizza ovens also are popular added perks, and Faulk says the next big innovation in out-door kitchens will make clean-up a breeze.“We’re all still waiting for an outdoor dish-washer to hit the market, but it hasn’t hap-pened yet,” he says, adding that he believes onewill debut sometime next year. “Everybody inthe industry is waiting for somebody to get itdone.”

Faulk suggests keeping functionality inmind. “Don’t shortchange the countertoparea,” he warns. “You see a lot of people puttingin all the equipment they want but then theyonly give themselves a square foot of counterspace to work with. Think about the prepwork, think about serving, think about whereyou’ve got to put a platter. You’ve got to havespace to work.”

Finally, no matter what the trends, make thekitchen your own. “It’s whatever you want it tobe, and whether it fits your home,” Byrne says.

For years, the trend in out-door living has been to inte-grate the interior with theexterior to get the best of bothworlds. This means bringingcomfy furniture and high-performance appliances out-side, and developing materi-als and technologies to helpthem withstand the weather.

The recession may havedampened spending overall, but it drives the “inside-out”movement as people forgovacations and nights on thetown to make the most oftheir outdoor living space.Homeowners want to stepinto their backyards withoutleaving the comforts of home. That means bringing indoorpracticalities like task lightingand coat racks into the greatoutdoors. And then there arethose who want to feel asthough they’re worlds away.

“The style in outdoor livingthis year can be summed upin two words: luxury resort,”says Elaine Williamson,

owner of her self-namedFrisco, Texas-based designfirm. Her clients want ameni-ties like decked-out cabanasthat give the impression thatan umbrella drink is soon tocome. “We’re truly turningyards into places you’d visiton vacation.”

Both groups, the nestersand escapers, are fueling a“design revolution” in out-door furniture and furnish-ings, says Rob Pressman, principal of TGP Inc.Landscape Architecture,Encino, Calif. “Exteriors usedto be more raw in the sensewe didn’t have all thesesophisticated materials. Now,all the interior elements areavailable for the outdoors.”

Manufacturers are offeringoutdoor furnishings thatwould look right at home in aliving room or even a four-star hotel suite, includingdeep, comfy sofas with silkyupholstery, accent pillowswith elegant piping, andfringed throws. “Think tuft-ed, rounded and luxurious,

with not a bit of wroughtiron,” Williamson says.“Think damask. Nauticalstripes and big tropical floralson vinyl are a thing of thepast.”

Companies like PatioHeaven and Kannoa offeroutdoor sectionals, sofas, loveseats and ottomans thatseem like they would be out oftheir element outside, due tothe richness of their materialsand their detailed construc-tion, but they’re designed towithstand full exposure towind, rain and sun.

“You can leave them unpro-tected. You can spray them offwith a hose,” Williamson says.“Some manufacturers are sobold as to offer them inwhite.”

White is “popping upeverywhere,” agrees GinaWicker, creative and designdirector for Glen Raven, N.C.-based fabric design firm GlenRaven Inc., which makesSunbrella outdoor and indoorfabrics. “It makes the perfectcanvas for seasonal updates

with pillows, throws and rugs.”This season, “Neutrals aretransitioning to cooler hueslike a gray-cast taupe ratherthan warmer tones, and char-coal gray rather than dark, chocolate brown,” Wickeradds. “We’re seeing these cool-er neutrals partnering withanything from fun yellow, orange and pink to calmerwheat, brass or vellum hues.”

Whatever the purpose of aninside-out exterior, the sameinterior design principlesshould guide the selection andplacement of furnishings.“They might apply even moreso,” Williamson says, “becausethere are more interferencesby which you need to scalethings and consider the col-ors.” Start by finding or creat-

ing a focal point, such as acabana, fireplace or water fea-ture, she suggests. This visualanchor, along with naturallandscape features and thehome’s architecture, will helpdetermine the color palette, materials and lighting that willbe used throughout the out-door living space.

Balance, repetition, contrastand variety are importantdesign principles to take intoconsideration. Contrast andtexture can be introducedunderfoot, as flooring for theoutdoors has come a long way.“It’s a lot richer – not just yourbrick patio,” Pressman says.“You have woods, tiles, stones. You can use just about any-thing you’d use indoors as longas it’s slip-resistant.”

A room with a viewWood decking, fencing,

structures and furnishings canenliven and add dimension to aspace with deep, vibrant colorsthat go far beyond the basicbrowns, like Olympic ExteriorStains’ Harvest Gold, Avocadoand a lipstick-like shade calledRosewood.

When applying design prin-ciples to wide-open spaces, theareas where people tend to falldown are scale and proportion.Where intimacy is desired, apergola “scales everythingdown to create the feeling of anoutdoor room,” says JeffHutton, author of “Inside Out:The Art and Craft of HomeLandscaping” (BreakawayBooks, 2007).

Finishing touches also havean indoor sensibility. “I haveseen more and more interest inoutdoor sculpture and art usedin the landscape,” Hutton says.Though perhaps not on thesame level as Rembrandt, spe-cially treated oil paintingsresistant to sun, rain and snoware cropping up on fences andabove outdoor sofas. CB2

offers versatile furnishingsconveniently designed for out-door and indoor use, includingthe Garcon Rolling Bar Cartthat collapses for storage.

“People want flexibility,”Pressman says. “Things used tobe more defined, and spaceswere zoned according to use,so you’d have your grill in oneplace like a little outdoorkitchen. But as families andkids grow, people like to beable to do different things andmove things around.”Williamson also has noticed apreference for what she calls“free-range fires.” She especial-ly likes the portable line of chicfire vessels by Planika Fires, which are safe for small orenclosed spaces because theyburn smokeless, nontoxic bio-fuels.

With all the furnishingsavailable for outside, it’simportant not to lose sight oftwo things: Plantings stillmake the best backyard deco-rations, and less is more, evenoutdoors.

Game On!By Jeff SchnauferCTW Features

Waiting for the next holi-day or birthday to throw abackyard bash? Well, wait nomore – from last-minutegame nights to themed par-ties, affordable backyardentertainment can be eveneasier to pull off than indoordinner parties.

The key to a good time, experts say, is a thoughtfulcombination of entertain-ment – like a theme, décorand games – and imaginativefood, that complements thetheme and spices up theparty.

Just ask Cynthia Nims, theSeattle-based author of

“Gourmet Game Night” (TenSpeed Press, 2010).

Adding the unexpectedidea of “gourmet” to theenduring concept of gamenight “breaks us out of thatmold that seems to alwaysassociate convenience foodswith having friends over toplay games: pizza, sandwich-es, hot dogs, chips, pretzels,”Nims says.

A game night party couldhave a South of the Bordertheme, Nims says, withbright tablecloths and nap-kins in turquoise, yellow, blue, orange and red; smallcactus plants on the table;chili pepper lights strungaround the yard; and a piña-

ta or two hanging from a tree.“Dominoes is a great optionfor backyard game playing,”she says, since the tiles areheavy enough to stand up toeven moderate breezes.

Technology has opened upa new era of outdoor games. There’s something for everyaudience. Play somethingnew (hook up a Wii to a TV),old school (Monopoly), ath-letic (volleyball) or even a lit-tle risky (poker). JamesMcNair, co-author of“Burger Parties” (RandomHouse, 2010), likes to placeboard games on tables and lethis guests choose while hegrills up their burgers.

“Any great burger pairs

Sher

i Gib

lin

Outdoor celebrations don’t need a reasonor a season – just food, friends and fun

well with an evening of games,”McNair says. “You mightchoose to make mini burgersbecause they are easy to eatwhile continuing to play.”Serving burgers doesn’t meanthe party can’t be classy,McNair says. “I recently hostedfriends for a ‘Sip and Slide’evening, combining two con-temporary restaurant experi-ences – the wine bar and miniburgers (sliders). I had candleseverywhere and had asked myguests to come dressed up for aglamorous night on the town.”Don’t forget the kids, saysKathy Peterson, co-host of“The Balancing Act” onLifetime Television and authorof “Kathy Peterson’s GreatOutdoor DecoratingMakeovers” (Watson-Guptill,2004). “Simple games likecroquet and badminton areold-time favorites that don’trequire a lot of set-up/break-down,” Peterson suggests.

Use color to set the moodwithout breaking the bank.“Tablecloths, candles and flow-ers with lots of color will go a

long way to create the mood,”Peterson says. “For sit-downoutdoor dinners, I like to cre-ate place cards with each per-son’s name along with themeaning of their name.Everyone really enjoys learn-ing what their name means.”
