JULY 2021 333

People Wanted We are on the lookout for speakers/singers/comedians/dancers/acrobats … anyone who has half an hour to spare at 1pm on a Friday to entertain our seniors at the Friday Circle social group. We are also looking for suggestions for people to interview in our “Out and About” column in the Tattler, so if you, or someone you know, could do either of these things, please contact Euan at [email protected], give us a call on 384 6799, or pop in and see us.

Playground Renewal We have been advised by WCC that the playground here at the Community Centre is on the playground renewal programme for the 2021/2022 financial year. An initial consultation with the Community Centre and Brooklyn and St Bernards Schools is coming up very soon, with public consultation to commence once concept designs are finalised. The playground is used by a wide range of children, from toddlers to teenagers, so we will be feeding back to WCC how important it is to keep it attractive

Ngā mihi o Matariki, te tau hou Māori – Happy Matariki!

Hello and welcome to the July edition of the Brooklyn Tattler. As we write this, Wellington is in Covid alert Level Two, but we are hopeful we will be back at Level One by the time the Tattler comes out. We have our sanitising and sign-in procedures in place, with extra cleaning being done throughout the day. Please remember to sign-in if you visit the Community Centre (at all alert levels) and use hand sanitiser when you arrive.

Market As a result of the alert level change, we have had to cancel our June market. This decision wasn’t taken lightly, but because the majority of the market is indoors and we are unable to provide adequate social distancing for our stall holders and visitors, we really had no choice but to cancel. This is the second June market that has been cancelled as we were in Level Two this time last year as well. The next market will be held on Saturday, 25 September.

Holiday Programme School holidays are this month so that means it’s time for another Holiday Programme here at the Community Centre. We have lots of fun planned, including trips to the Penthouse, Laser Force, and Kilbirnie Rec Centre. There are still some spaces available so contact Adam at [email protected] if you would like to find out more.

reason at some very inconvenient hours. If you live locally to the school you have likely been affected by this. The good news is that the building contractor has now found the source of the fault and remedied it. Hopefully that’s the end of the early morning alarms.

St Bernards pupils recently had a morning at the ASB centre where they received expert basketball and floorball coaching from Wellington Saints player, Troy McLean. Also, in June, a “crazy hair day” was held to support the Shave for a Cure initiative, which raises funds for people undergoing cancer treatment, and cancer research.

Term Two finishes on 8 July for St Bernards, and 9 July for Brooklyn and Ridgway Schools. Term Three commences on 26 July.

School holidays are upon us again this month, marking the halfway point of the school year. Before then, Matariki celebrations are being planned. As I write this, Wellington is in Covid alert Level Two, so hopefully we will move back down to Level One and they will be able to go ahead.

Brooklyn School’s redevelopment programme that commenced in October 2018 is nearing the finish line, with the administration block currently being re-clad, and plastering and painting now underway. It is hoped to be completed in early term three at which time a community celebration will be held. The school has, for the past few months, been having trouble with their fire alarm which has been going off for no apparent

UPDATE

4 JULY 2021 BROOKLYN TATTLER

WCC UPDATE

Brooklyn, up until recently, had two bowling clubs in its area, the Vogelmorn Bowling Club and the Wellington Bowling Club. The Wellington Bowling Club at Tanera Park was an amalgamation of two earlier clubs, the Aro Street Bowling Club, and the Kelburn Bowling Club. The Aro Street club survived for over 80 years and was located where the Wellington City Council owned Pukehinau Flats are now, while the Kelburn club was situated on Kelburn Park, now occupied by the fountain. Both clubs were very attractive to wealthy members who were merchants and professionals in the 1930s up to the 1960s, but even then, membership was declining and the executive members were offered a price to sell that was very attractive so they accepted. Both were one green clubs, and when they sold, the members purchased a section of Tanera Park where the present

facilities were built. In later years, both Wellington and Vogelmorn Club members were mainly local residents from Brooklyn and Mornington.

Vogelmorn Bowling Club was established in 1944 as a number of local residents who had given up the more physical games of football, cricket, and tennis were keen to form a bowling club. There was a vacant site adjacent to the Vogelmorn Hall - so named as it was midway between Mornington and Vogeltown. The Wellington City Council had no use for the land and granted a lease so the green could be formed. Local residents were very generous with a number taking out debentures of fixed amounts so work could begin. By 1945, 500 debentures had been issued to 33 residents and most of these people did all the excavations and preparations themselves. It was completed and play commenced in October 1947. The Club survived until 2014 when falling membership forced them to sell. The buyer was the Vogelmorn Foundation, who oversees the Vogelmorn Community Group.

Harrison Street Housing Rebuild

Construction is estimated to be completed by 2022. We have been advised by WCC that there will be a vehicle turning area.

Building Line Restriction

We understand that the council has come to an agreement regarding the section of footpath outside 31 Cleveland Street relating to the building line restriction of 1962. More details next month.

31 Cleveland St / New Housing

The building has been demolished and construction is starting on 23 apartments with a commercial enterprise on the street front.

Ohiro / Todman Cleveland Intersection

The council has issued TR84-21 notification re changes in lower Todman Street, and on the east side of Ohiro Road between Cleveland St and McKinley Cres and to the bus stop to the north east of the intersection. The consultation started on 28 June. https://wellington.govt.nz/have-your-say/consultations

Old St Matthew’s Church – multi unit dwellings

Demolition has begun. New owner seeking Resource Consent for a 14 unit development. There will be access to two garages from Garfield Street with the remaining vehicle access via Washington Ave.

WCC Southern Landfill

WCC Southern Landfill resource consent will run out in four years. C&D (building demolition clean fill) is close to filling its existing site –can expand to a further nearby site – and T&T is nearing limit on its resource consent (also have room to expand further under a new Resource Consent). We expect more information soon. WCC also need to clarify what it intends to do with its sewage sludge treatment plant at the Southern Landfill.

OWHIRO STREAMfriends of

Some months ago, an email arrived in the FOOS inbox from the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) inviting us to take part in an eDNA survey. eDNA? Oh, “environmental DNA.” Apparently, if we took samples of our stream water, Wilderlab, Aotearoa’s only eDNA testing lab, based in Wellington could magically draw out the DNA of everything, animal or vegetable, that had passed through the water - bugs, butterflies, leaves, dogs, invertebrates, fish. After receiving our special syringes, we sent off our samples and forgot about them.

However, recently we went to a lecture on DNA and there on the Power Point screen was a slide of someone getting a water test exactly as we had done. The lecturer, Dr Mike Bunce, mentioned that the technology to interpret these tests was fairly new, something to do with metabarcoding, somewhat like using a magnet to draw out the pertinent information. He also told us that we

could look up the results on Wilderlab’s website, which of course we did as soon as we got home, and very interesting they were. We had taken two tests, one from our site by Jamieson’s Towing, and one further down below where the stream from T&T landfill entered. The results from each sample are startlingly different, test number 501644, from the upper stream, showed a myriad of species hits, while results from the lower sample were very meagre. According to the all-knowing Dr Google, eDNA survives in water for a few weeks at most. Results should have shown what was currently in the stream, so how did there get to be cow and sheep samples? Trucks going to the landfill?

To see for yourself, you can look up Wilderlab on the net - type Owhiro Stream in the search box, and then click ‘table’.

NEW CLASSES FOR FOUR TO SEVEN YEAR OLDSJoanne Lisik is a performing arts teacher and professional performer who has created fun and entertaining classes for kids aged four to seven years old called “Physical Stories with Jo.” Outside her role as a school drama teacher at QMC, she runs weekly classes using a range of interactive yoga stories, drama exercises, songs, and reflection time, to build on children’s concentration, confidence and collaboration skills.

Using stories that kids love like Frozen, Giraffes Can’t Dance, and The Gruffalo, Joanne focuses on the messages behind these stories such as managing fear, being

kind and discovering what makes you special; learning that your actions affect both your own well- being and others around you; being brave and able to stay calm by using deep breathing to think clearly. “It’s really important for kids to be taught strategies to deal with life’s stresses when they are young, so that they have tools to access throughout their lives,” says Joanne. The sessions are designed to be really great fun and purposeful. “Getting kids physically moving their bodies and thinking simultaneously is so beneficial”. The first session is FREE, but you do have to register so get in quick!

Classes run in Brooklyn and Island Bay. Brooklyn classes start on Wednesday 4 August at 3.30pm from the Scouts Hall in Harrison Street. For more information go to joannelisik.com or email [email protected]. Love to have you join us!

POSSUMThis is the face of a cat who has been through adversity, and still has a loving heart to share.

Possum is a brave and trusting girl, who was living as a stray in a layby near Levin. She was taken off the street by a local animal rescue, but she had multiple health issues, and wasn’t coping with the other cats and dogs.

CPW is now looking after Possum, and her diabetes is now in remission, and she’s doing very well on current medication and prescribed diet for her skin and tummy issues. Her patchy tortie fur has come through thick and soft!

Despite her health challenges, Possum loves spending time with people, and we think she’s only five years old. As soon as anyone approaches her, she’s ready with a huge purry welcome. This is a sweet lady who needs her own loving home, where she can put her troubles behind her for once and for all.

Possum is eligible for our Care for Life foster programme, where we pay the vet bills for her existing medical conditions, in return for someone giving her a wonderful, loving home.

There’s more about Possum at catsprotectionwellington.org.nz. Call us for an appointment on 04 389 9668 if you would like to meet her. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube for pictures, stories and videos of cats in our shelter.

With the shortest day come and gone, it’s nice to be reminded of just what’s possible when the weather becomes more clement. And for us, that’s enjoying all the people drawn to Central Park. The photo shows one of the mushroom-hatted people who were sharing the park with us at a Sunday working bee earlier this year. The hats were made by Victoria Gridley and worn to the CubaDupa Festival. They were particularly spectacular as they flew down the playground on the flying fox.

A big shout out to the Young Professionals from GHD who turned up in very inclement weather to help out at the May working bee. Not only did they dig in, but they also brought us morning tea. A generous gift in return for wet socks, muddy shoes and weeds!

In July we’ll be planting. Don’t miss the opportunity to add a little bit of

your energy to growth in the park as we welcome in the new year after Matariki. Dress warm and bring your own mug. We’ll provide tools and home-baked morning tea.
