operational funding from WCC. BCA also produce the Brooklyn Tattler each month; run the quarterly markets; and provide OSCAR endorsed Before and After School Care, and Holiday Programmes. Next year is an exciting time for BCA as we will be celebrating our 75th anniversary and Chris Rabey, our current President, has now begun work compiling a history of the Association, from its inception to the present day. Our AGM will be on Sunday 12 September at 2pm here at the Community Centre. Afternoon tea will be served at the end of the meeting. Everyone is welcome, so come down and meet the people who run the Centre. New committee members are encouraged, so if you, or someone you know, are interested in finding out more, please contact us here at the Centre.

We have a couple of new groups running here at the Community Centre:

Expect to have a great time connecting with the community while learning to dance. Cost, $10 per person or $15 per couple. Contact [email protected] or just turn up.

Hello and welcome to the August edition of the Brooklyn Tattler. Next month’s Tattler is the second of our twice-yearly home editions, be sure to check your letterbox for a copy. This month we were excited to receive an email from the Netherlands, from a former resident of the Two Todman building. Mike told us he lived there from 1962 -1974 with his parents, Thakor and Mieke, who owned the fruit and vegetable shop there. A friend still living here had sent Mike a copy of June’s edition which had photos of the building “then and now”. Mike told us he has a painting of Two Todman by the artist Eleanor File, founder of Watercolour New Zealand, hanging in his house in the Netherlands; nice to know there’s a little bit of Brooklyn in a lounge in Europe.

We hope the recent wild weather hasn’t brought too much disruption to you and your homes. Thankfully, the Community Centre didn’t suffer any flooding damage but we have heard of a few Brooklyn residents who, unfortunately, did experience some issues with all the rain the other weekend. We hope the clean-up wasn’t too onerous.

AGM It’s nearly time for our AGM again, they seem to roll around quicker each year. The Brooklyn Community Centre is owned and managed by the Brooklyn Community Association (BCA) with the help of

We’ve recently gone through our collection and taken out some books to put on sale. There are still some adult fiction books available, a few older magazines, and some picture books that are a bit worse for wear but still very readable. This is to make more space for all the great new material we get in each week. We are also replacing a few of those classic story books that are a bit torn-up after years of use.

All Wellington City Library branches are currently celebrating Matariki and here at the Brooklyn branch we have put on a sparkly display of all the children’s books we have about the occasion. There are some amazing new titles that we have in both English and Te Reo Māori, so your family can practice your language skills together. We have put out some Matariki-related colouring-in pages for the kids, so they have extra activities to do to celebrate this special time of year.

THE NEW TOWNSHIPBy 1888 when the new township of Brooklyn had been formed and named, the area on the old Goathurst farm site comprised 34 buildings, mainly residences, but including a general store run my Mrs Ferkins and her two sons, and a wood and coal depot, which was behind the store. The majority of the sections sold were being fenced, and cultivation had commenced.

Rapid progress with street formation was being made. In January 1892 the western part of Cleveland Street was formed to its full-width to give a better approach from Ohiro Road. The Short Bros. contractors, who performed the work, also lowered the grade on Ohiro Road to the top of the hill near Fitchett’s Farm. A short time later, Jackson Street was formed (now Mckinley Crescent) at a cost of 40 pounds. Lighting was installed after formation.

With all the road building and maintenance, quarries began to be created in various parts of Wellington, including in Ohiro. Early Brooklyn settler, John Odlin, established a quarry on Section 130 Brooklyn around this time, and used it for his building work. He went on to become a prominent building merchant in the city. When the township was subdivided in 1888, Odlin purchased a large property comprising 8 acres, 2 roods, 24 perches, part of Section 12, for 562 pounds, 5 shillings. By the mid 1890s John and his two sons, Charles and George, entered into a partnership to survey, subdivide

and sell the land. Subsequently John purchased, on behalf of the partnership, three more parcels of land nearby. George then purchased one of these pieces in Dorking Road, on which he built his large six-roomed house in 1909. The area where Dorking Road was formed had originally been known as Box Hill, due to the contours of the land. Later the name was dropped, to avoid confusion with Boxhill in Khandallah. In 1896 John laid a right of way 50ft wide from Washington Avenue over another portion of Section 12. This connected to Dorking Road, but was never recognised by the Council. Two years later, this was sold to Stephen Williams. Traces of this track can still be seen, below Asquith Terrace.

Harrison Street Housing Rebuild

Construction is estimated to be completed by 2022. We’ve been advised by WCC that there will be a turning area when the construction is completed.

Building Line Restriction

We understand WCC has negotiated to purchase the small piece of land involved, and are awaiting confirmation.

Civil Defence Container

Progress continues with conversations between WCC, GBRAI, Brooklyn School and Brooklyn Community Centre. A site has been selected with plans being drawn up.

31 Cleveland St New Housing

The building has been demolished; construction is starting on 23 apartments, with a commercial enterprise on the street front.

Ohiro / Todman Cleveland Intersection

WCC consultation on proposed changes in lower Todman Street, on the east side of Ohiro Road between Cleveland St and McKinley Cres, and to the bus stop to the north east of the intersection has closed. Awaiting update.

Old St Matthew’s Church – Multi Unit Dwellings

Site is being prepared, boundary pegs in place along the walkway. Consent for 14 units -12 accessed from Washington Ave and two with garages on Garfield Street. GBRAI is lodged as an interested party.

WCC Southern Landfill

WCC Southern Landfill resource consent will run out in four years. CENTRAL PARKfriends of

It’s not all about weeds and planting when you join the Upstream Friends of Central Park. July saw some of us guiding groups into the park under the cover of darkness to view those miniature native magicians – glow worms. What else could you call something with a glowing bum and the ability to weave silk threads resembling chandeliers, with only their mouths?

Perhaps, unhappily, learning about the biology of a glow worm somewhat ruins the romance of them. Yes, they appear as nature’s own fairy lights, the night-sky writ small on the mossy bank. But those globular jewels on their silver threads are made of mucus. The mucus catches insects who, fooled by the glow worm’s bioluminescent bottom into believing they are heading for the night sky, come to a sticky end. But then glow worms need to eat for the year they spend as larvae, because once they’ve metamorphosed into the adult form – better known as a ‘fungus gnat’ – they have no mouths. Superfluous when all one needs to do is to mate, produce eggs (if you’re female), and then die.

See.

Glancing up through silhouettes of ferns and leafless tree-skeletons, backlit by the starry sky, was magical. And so were the glow worms. At this time of year, you don’t even have to stay up past bedtime to see them. For daytime adventures in the park, join one of our working bees. Bring your own mug. We’ll provide tools and, if you come on a Sunday, home-baked morning tea.

Formerly known as the Brooklyn Resource Centre, and more recently as The BRC Society, the organisation has existed in the Brooklyn community for almost 40 years. It operated from premises in Jefferson Street until the property was sold at the end of 2017. Proceeds from the sale of the property were invested. Over the last couple of years the core programme of activity continued from St Matthew’s Church and subsequently Brooklyn Community Centre took over the running of the ‘Friday Circle’. A decision was made to transition from an Incorporated Society to a Registered Charity in order to distribute grants to not-for-profit groups and organisations operating in the wider Brooklyn area. Grants are distributed in two funding cycles each year – the first funding round is in March and the second funding round is in September. Closer to the next distribution cycle in a couple of months’ time information on how to apply for funding will be provided through this column.

The BRC Charitable Trust

The BRC Charitable Trust has two funding cycles each year – one in March and the other in September (to coincide with the Brooklyn Tattler delivery to all households in the area).

In March this year, five local groups/organisations received funding: Brooklyn Community Association,

Brooklyn School, Brooklyn Scouts, Vogelmorn Tennis Club, and Whanāu Manaaki Brooklyn Kindergarten.

Our second funding distribution will occur next month. Applications open on 1 September and close on 30 September. Any not-for-profit community organisation, group, or incorporated charity that provides an activity, programme, or service for the benefit of people in the wider Brooklyn area can apply (with a maximum funding of $5,000 for each project).

Details on how to apply for funding will be provided through this column next month.

BROOKLYN KINDERGARTEN’S NEW HEATERS

Top of Page Heading: Local Childcare, Main heading: Brooklyn Kindergarten’s New Heaters, Photo supplied

Brooklyn Kindergarten was delighted to receive funding from the BRC Charitable Trust in May. The application was made in March this year to support the kindergarten with the purchasing and fitting of two wall mounted electrical heaters for the outdoor deck area. The timing was perfect, and the heaters were fitted just in time for winter and the coldest week of the year so far! The tamariki and kaiako (teachers) alike have been enjoying the warmth the heaters provide, and this funding has helped ensure the outdoor space is usable all year round. The community at Brooklyn Kindergarten would like to say a huge thank you to The BRC Charitable Trust for their help! Tēnā Kotou.

OWHIRO STREAMfriends of

Recently, FOOS members have spent two working bees working along the banks of the stream on the southern side of Murchison St. This is an area we last worked on in 2015 - I have just looked this up to verify the date, and cannot believe it was so long ago! The trees have grown very successfully, especially the ngaio, so that it is hard to imagine it as it originally was, windswept and barren. Successful as it has been, however, on closer inspection, as always, there are gaps and groves of blackberry taking over wherever there is enough light. So, our aim for the last two months has been to clear the blackberry and do in-fill planting in the spaces. It is quite remarkable how, if the canopy is dense enough, most weeds do not grow. Don’t be misled, however, if the canopy is removed, for whatever reason - by fire, browsing, or storm damage - gorse, blackberry, and other weeds are still there

just waiting for their chance. Of course, a weed is just a plant we don’t want, and perfectly entitled to its proper place in the world. And we have to admire their tenacity and ability to survive; it’s just that we would rather our spaces were filled with varied plant species that sheltered and nourished our native birds lizards, etc., rather than creating impenetrable, prickly, mono-cultural thickets .

The photo at the heading shows our hardy team planting the site in August 2015. Our next working bee will be on 14 August, so if you would like to help us make a difference, perhaps you could join us? Not quite sure where we will be, but just look for our flag somewhere down Owhiro Road.

Kia Ora Neighbours! You will have noticed our space beginning to pick up momentum. From the street front our lights are on a lot more often, and the foot traffic through our building has increased. Two Todman (2 Todman Street), owned by the Anglican Church of Wellington, has four spaces available for the public. These spaces include a Chapel Space, a Thrift Store, a Community Space, and Brooklyn Co-Workers. We have thoroughly enjoyed the partnerships we have been able to form within the Brooklyn community so far.

In early August, Two Todman is hosting an information night for those interested in knowing more about our shared office space. Brooklyn Co-Workers is an inspiring space for remote workers, creatives, and entrepreneurs to collaborate and work productively. Small business owner and Brooklyn local Benjamin Matthews has seen Brooklyn Co-Workers to be a real asset for managing his work life balance. With a

young family in the area he has appreciated having a space to get work done in both a flexible and focused way while being close to home. Benjamin has found it to be both a cost effective space to be productive, as well as great for connecting with other like-minded people from around the community. We warmly invite you to join us on Thursday 12 August at 7.30pm as we explore ways that we can partner together! Feel free to email [email protected] with any queries prior to the night.

ST JOHN YOUTH GROUPWelcome to the Brooklyn St John Youth Group. Each month there will be an update on what’s been happening and advising of future exciting activities!

So, you are asking, what’s St John Youth all about in my area? The Brooklyn St John youth group meets on a Tuesday Evening at 6.30pm during the school term at the Brooklyn Community Centre. Cadets are the largest group within St John Youth. Since the programme is for all young people aged eight to 18, cadets are grouped into various levels for training, competitions, events, camps and even social activities. We also have many mixed activities for senior cadets to take the lead and provide role models for junior cadets to aspire to.

So, although we cover a lot of ages - don’t panic! Cadets enter levels based on their age and unique needs. It’s a great place for cadets to make new friends and learn new skills.

Outside the exciting activities that happen in a division, there are heaps of other activities throughout the year for cadets to meet new people, learn new things and have loads of fun. This is a big list, so we’ll cover the many social, adventure, competitive and travel opportunities as they come up.

Opportunities St John Youth offers many different opportunities for young people to challenge themselves. The only limit to what you can achieve is how far you are willing to go!

Outside of our weekly divisional meetings, there is an assortment of possibilities for all ages.

Overnight stays and camps

Courses and training workshops

Fun days and social functions

Competitions and first aid scenarios

Adventure activities

Drill and formal ceremonies

Operational events alongside St John Events personnel

READY TO LOVE YOU TO THE MAXX

Behind the glorious coat and shy manner is a loving heart, just looking for the right home.

Gentle 13 year old Maxx was brought to CPW when his person passed away and the remaining family couldn’t take care of him.

Maxx is a very big, luxuriously soft, fluffy boy. He has a gentle nature and can get stressed easily, so he needs a quiet home to spend his golden years in. He previously lived with another cat but is scared of dogs and children.

Maxx has heart issues, hyperthyroidism and issues with his liver. When he becomes stressed he struggles to breathe, but he is being treated for these conditions. He’s doing really well, but does need ongoing care.

Despite his health challenges, Maxx is a sweet-natured boy and – once he knows you – a loving little cat. He will be happiest in a quiet, stress-free home with no other pets.

There’s more about Maxx at catsprotectionwellington.org.nz. Call CPW for an appointment on 04 389 9668 if you would like to meet him. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube for pictures, stories and videos of cats in our shelter.
