Fellow Lions,
The last month has been an interesting one for C1. We have now increased our membership to 1,171 members; a net increase of 48 since July 1st, a great effort by all concerned.
Last week, we held our first Diabetes SA awareness event at Clare, which was a great success both from the organisational side and for promoting Lions. My thanks to all involved. We now look forward to the coming events over the next three months.
As a result of our recent services workshop, we have arranged a fitness challenge for all clubs in C1 under the banner “C1 Making Strides”. All members from our clubs are invited to take part in the challenge by measuring the distance they travel either by walking, swimming, running, roller skating or cycling from 1 April to 30 June 2021. A leader board will be published each week showing the amount of kilometres travelled by each club for that week and cumulatively to date (a collective total of clubs across the district will also be listed). The winning club at the end of the competition will receive a $500 amount to assist their service activities. This will be presented at the district handover on 17 July 2021.
The purpose of the challenge is to encourage our members, their families and friends to improve their fitness and wellbeing, as part of our district contribution to the Dia-betes Awareness Program.
A special project pin is also in the process of being produced, and once ready they will be available from the Cabinet Secretary at a cost of $5 per pin. I’m looking forward to your participation.
Last Saturday, our district final of the Youth of the Year was held with candidates from the Lions Clubs of Balaklava, Maitland, Athelstone, Golden Grove and Whyalla. The standard of the competition was very high and the sponsoring clubs are to be congratulated in putting forward their candidates. The state final will be held at Gold-en Grove on 18 April.
Subject to Covid 19, Lions are encouraged to attend the National Convention in Can-berra in May.
Yours in Lionism
Tony Pederick OAM
District Governor

On Thursday 25th March, the Lions Club of Clare District hosted the first of ten Diabetes Awareness and Screening clinics to be
held in the north and west of the state.
This major project is a collaboration between Diabetes SA (DSA) (provider of the 6 health professionals and also funder of an
associated PR campaign “face the facts”), phn COUNTRY SA (funding the regional events) and Lions District 201C1 and local
Lions Clubs who facilitate the events locally.
Lions also funded the purchase of three of the POC HbA1c testing machines
along with other supporting material. The testing machines and iPads will
stay with Diabetes SA, while the additional banners and tear drop flags, De-
fib unit and first aid kit will stay with the District and will go with the PR trail-
er/kits.
At all locations the halls are setup in a way to facilitate the safe (COVID-19
Virus Compliant) and efficient movement of people through the process.
This worked very well. The process simply is people check in at one desk,
and whether they have already registered via the web site or not they are
directed to an appropriate desk which then guides the people through a Risk
Assessment review (AUSDRISK).
If this assessment returns a high-risk level, the people are asked to go to the
Point of Care test using the sophisticated (and expensive) HbA1c machines
which returns an average sugar level for the previous 3 months (it is not
affected by size and time of last meals). Visitors, and Lions of course, could
then attend a short lecture/presentation on Diabetes and its management.
The DSA professionals were at all times available to discuss any associated
issues including dilatory information.
What a team. Dr Foorough (DSA), David Bond (Clare Lions identity), Emma Young
(phn COUNTRY SA – part funder of the project) and Cathy Whiteley (DSA)
Interesting stats from this first event showed 56% of people screened rec-
orded a high risk for type 2 Diabetes and of those who then had a Point Of
Care (POC) HbA1c test, 10% returned a positive result for Type 2 Diabetes.
All those screened that returned a high-risk score were given a letter of re-
ferral for their GP.
It should be noted that people who have already been diagnosed as Type -2 Diabetic, and under professional care, were not ,
and will not be tested. The DSA Health professionals will of course discuss any issues relating to risk reduction or Diabetes
management with those who attend.
The handout material is excellent and will help people to minimise their risk and manage, where required, their condition. Of
course, there was plenty of Lions info available, not just on Lions generally, but importantly about the local club, hosting the
event. In fact, the Clare event should lead to 3 new members to Clare Lions and it certainly helped cement the club’s reputa-
tion in the local community. So, besides the good it does detecting people with high risks of contracting Type 2 Diabetes (and
as such reduce their and the country’s health costs), it also enhances Lion’s reputation in their community and importantly
should attract new members to hosting Clubs.
Screening events are still to occur to the end of June and include locations in the west coast, Yorke Peninsula and the mid
north. Go to the web site www.facethefacts.org.au for more details on Diabetes risk factors and the dates and locations of the
next 9 screening events.

Detailed info packs are being sent to each location’s coordinator and includes location specific posters, details on
tasks to be performed on the day, in fact everything that local lions need to know. A Zoom meeting will be sched-
uled soon to discuss all the issues and expectations etc for the remaining nine events.
It’s a great project, and it deserves everyone’s support. For those clubs that are involved, it is a real chance to
grow your brand in the community and to increase your membership, not just members of the public that attend,
but the local Diabetes health professionals in your community who are invited by Diabetes SA to participate in the
events.

The poster pictured (on the following page) s the Clare specific poster. Each location will have its own poster
as the QR code on each is unique. This will take the person to a web site that not only has all the information
on Diabetes and how to reduce the risk of getting it or managing it, it will also include details of the event and a
booking function for those who want to make a specific time for their screening.

AROUND THE CLUBS ATHELSTONE YOUTH OF THE YEAR
A successful Youth of Year was held at Cafe Va Bene ,Campbelltown on March 1st. There were 3 female en-trants, one from St Ignatius College & two from St Dominic's Priory College.
President Lion John Heffernan was proud to have his brother Judge Tim Heffernan as the Chairman of our judging panel. Michael Cook was proud too, as he was Club Youth of Year Chairman in 1983-1984 when Tim Heffernan was Youth of Year State Finalist , representing the Athelstone Club. The 3 judges were very impressed with the high standard of the entrants.
Lion Val Jarvis as Y o Y Chairman was assisted by club mem-bers who helped organise the judges, venues, certificates & photos. The club's newest member. Lion Jane Moran nomi-nated Evelyn Vincin- Walker to be a contestant & she was our overall winner. A teacher from St Ignatius & a teacher from St Dominic's Priory College attended the meeting on March 1st.
St Dominic's Priory College has supported the Youth of Year program for over 20 years, providing students to the now closed Highbury Club, City of Adelaide Club & Athelstone Club. Next year the teacher from St Ignatius has promised to help our club & Charles Campbell College Principal has also promised to support our club in 2021-2022.
Teachers are the people who support Lions club members to find students to enter the Y o Y programme.

AROUND THE CLUBS GILLES PLAINS SUCCESSFUL SKIN CANCER SCREENING
Screening our community for skin cancers We went home after day one with the knowledge from the Lions Medical Research Foundation’s interim report that they had detected seven people with potentially life threatening skin cancers that day. It ended up being a big topic of conver-sation for the next 24 hours and saw Sunday booked solid with Facebook requests and walk-ins filling all appointment gaps after a post was made encouraging people to come along. In all, we saw approximately 130 people from the com-munity over the two days; with many never screened before. All Lions pitched in to help the skin cancer screening service run smoothly in a great team effort. The Lions Skin Cancer Screening program has been operating in South Australia and the Northern Territory since 2011. The geographical area covered by C Districts is enormous, servic-ing some 135 clubs located throughout South Australia, the Northern Territory and parts of Western Victoria and New South Wales. Every day, six Australians die from skin cancer. Quite aside from the human cost, the cost to the Australian health system is over $1 billion a year; and to the Australian economy in lost productivity over $2 billion a year. As it is the most common cancer affecting young Australians – we en-couraged all, including many teenagers to complete the screening. Early diagnosis has a dramatic and critical impact on successful treatment because skin cancers can grow rapidly. We were located in the car park next to Dana Wortley MP offices and she popped in to wish all well over the weekend. Her team had been instrumental in taking the bookings via phone in the lead up for us. Lion Dana is a member of Gilles Plains Lions Club. Additionally, the Fasta Pasta crew were happy to host us for lunches and toilet breaks! They even sent team members over for screening, as well as one asking about membership – he said, “dad is a Lion in India and thinks of it as a great commu-nity service to be involved with”. All round the weekend was a thorough success, as well as en-joyable.
TESTAMONIALS
I saw online that Lions were having free skin cancer checks so I booked myself and my 18 year old daughter in. We are both fair skinned so it was time, having never had a full check before. We arrived early and were greeted with smiling, welcoming faces who instantly made us feel at ease and well taken care of. A small bit of paperwork and into the trailer we went. I am a bit claustrophobic but felt fine in the surprisingly spacious trailer. A private room was provided for each of us where retired nurses who have undertaken further training searched our underwear-clad bodies for signs of trouble. It was quick, non-invasive and of course, free. A very positive experience over all. Thanks Li-ons!” Joanne Sanders
Hello I just wanted to take a moment to say thankyou for the wonderful service provided by the Lions with the mobile skin cancer checking clinic. My wife made arrangements for both of us to attend. I avoid anything that involves any medical tests or check ups but kept the appointment for the sake of domestic harmony. I was impressed with how smoothly and professionally it all went. The Lions people organizing it made it such a friendly and easy process that I was on my way home 10 minutes after I first arrived. Thankyou for mak-ing it possible. Kevin

EXCITING TIMES AT THELSTONE LIONS
On 23 March 2021, District Governor Tony Pederick un-veiled a Seat and a Plaque at Thorndon Park Reservoir, Par-adise, remembering, since the Club’s Charter in 1976, rec-ognising all Lions of the Lions Club of Athelstone past, pre-sent and to come who have and will continue to work tire-lessly in and for their Community and also supporting so many Past, Present and Future Events hosted by the City of Campbelltown Council and the Club at Thorndon Park. Council very generously provided free of charge a Seat and a Plaque recognising the Athelstone Lions Club for its ser-vice in and support of Council Events at the Park.
It was particularly fitting that the remaining Charter Mem-ber, Former Lion Dennis Ryan and his Partner, were able to attend this very special and historic function. Some other former Lions Members, including a Past President and his Partner attended but unfortunately, invited Widow Part-ners of deceased Lions were unavailable on the day.
District Governor Tony Pederick unveiled the Seat and Plaque in a simple Ceremony of Dedication. Cabinet Secre-tary, Petrea Stacey, Zone Chairman Ray Najar and available Members of the Lions Club of Athelstone were present at this Historic Event. Other VIP’s who attended were the Lo-cal Member of Parliament for Morialta, John Gardner MP, and the Member for Hartley, Vincent Tarzia MP, The Mayor of Campbelltown, Mayor Jill Whittaker, and the Council Works Manager, Mario Scalzi, who helped the Club to bring this Dedicatory Seat and Plaque to fruition. Each gave a short occasional speech.
An added highlight at the Event was the Induction of Vin-cent Tarzia MP (see previous page) by District Governor, Tony, as a member of the Lions Club of Athelstone, thus steadily increasing our membership.

NEWS FROM TORRENS VALLEY
At the General Meeting and AGM on Saturday, 20 March, the Lions Club of Charles Sturt showed unanimous support for the Diabetes Awareness Project. Responding to the District's request, resolved to donate $250 to help finance the travel box.
Following the AGM, they warmly welcomed their guest speaker Rex Buckingham, the Principal Consultant at "LeadershipThinkingAcademy." His very different presenta-tion resounded with the Club Members. They felt that oth-er Clubs might also benefit from Rex's advice and experi-ence.
Rex has corporately managed, owned, or consulted with many industries. His work has encompassed a diverse portfolio, including general management, negotiation, lead-ership development, marketing, personnel, and strategic development.
A self-described people watcher, Rex works with behaviour and people across all the facets previously mentioned. He highlighted the 'waterfall effect' - to generate good leader-ship and achieve good staff and volunteer outcomes. There-fore, changes to poor practice need to occur with a top-down approach. To obtain the best results, you must lead by example.
Rex suggested that the word "cannot" not be used in one's vocabulary.
Suppose you want to change what is happening in your life and your relationship with those around you. In that case, it is necessary to change the words and sentences you use in conversation with those people.
People need to change their thought patterns and look at why an occur-rence is happening. Rex closed with the concept of "Ask, Listen, Ask, Lis-ten, Ask."

Wallaroo Lions Club would like to thank everyone involved for making our Market grand opening at the Wallaroo Town Hall a resounding success. With double the stall holders and attractions, even the intermittent rain could not dampen the enthusiasm of the hoard of patrons.
What a perfect way to showcase our beautiful, historical Town Hall. The comments from people, on how amazing it was, were constant as they entered the main hall. Thank you Copper Coast Council for allowing us to secure our lease. The recent renova-tions look very spiffy. Stall holders were pleased to have so much space to work within, and we have had many more enquiries about April’s market.
A big thank you to our local Police and Ambulance members for coming along to display their vehicles and chat with members of the public; it certainly added a bit of interest to those that wan-dered around the outside stalls and tents.
Market co-ordinator Sharon Launer had put in a massive effort to get this move completed and operational, and received a re-sounding acknowledgement of her efforts at our last Lions meeting. Well done Sharon, without you, it would not have been possible. Anyone looking to book a stall for our next market on Sunday April 11, please contact Sharon on Ph:0434048418 or email: [email protected].

We had to have the garage door repaired. The repairman
told us that one of our problems was that we did not have a
'large' enough motor on the opener. I thought for a minute,
and said that we had the largest one made at that time, a
1/2 horsepower. He shook his head and said, 'You need a
1/4 horsepower.' I responded that 1/2 was larger than 1/4
and he said, 'NOOO, it's not. Four is larger than two.' We
haven't used that repairman since...
A vampire bat came flapping in from the night, face all cov-ered in fresh blood and parked himself on the roof of the cave to get some sleep. Pretty soon all the other bats could smell the blood and be-gan hassling him about where he got it. He told them to leave off and let him get some sleep, but they persisted until he finally gave in. "OK, follow me", he said and flew out of the cave with hun-dreds of bats behind him. Down through a valley they went, across a river and into a huge forest. Finally, he slowed down and all the other bats excitedly milled around him, tongues hanging out for blood. "Do you see that large oak tree over there?" he asked. "Yes, yes, YES!!" the bats all screamed in a frenzy. "Good" said the first bat, "Because I didn’t”.
A professor was giving a lecture on company slogans in a college advertising and marketing class. "Joe," he asked, "which company has the slogan, 'Come fly the friendly skies'?" "United." Joe answered. "Brenda, can you tell me which company has the slogan, "Don't leave home without it?" Brenda answered the correct credit card company with no difficulty. "Now John, Tell me which company uses the slogan, 'Just do it'?" And John answered, "Mum."

The following Information Sheet has been prepared to assist each Club to undertake data cleansing exercise recently en-dorsed by the Council of Governors at the September Council meeting. Over the next twelve months each Club has to finalised this review and standardise their Club MyLCI records with a view to dispensing with the PU101 in 2022 and the Multiple District Directory compiled from corrected Club MyLCI records. Mobile and Telephone Numbers: Based on the standards shown on line, mobile and telephone numbers should be listed as follows – 1. Home or Work No: currently listed as (02) 4823 6358 should be shown as _ Country Code Area Code Number 61 2 4823 6358 2. Mobile No: currently listed as 0427 261 361 should be shown as – Country Code Area Code Number 61 427 261 361 Address: Please do not use abbreviations for Street or Road type and the entire address should preferably be in Capitals. a. An address shown currently as 120 Green Valley Rd, Goulburn, NSW 2580 should be shown as _ Address Line 1 City State (select from menu) Post Code 120 GREEN VALLEY ROAD GOULBURN New South Wales 2580 Other Contact Information: i. It is imperative all contact information be as complete, up to date and accurate as possible unless the Lion involved indi-cates that some or all of the information is not for publication.
ii. For example, if the Lion has an email address that can be listed, please show it (if is in agreeance), as that is generally how Lions Clubs International communicate with us.
iii. If the Lion has a mobile or home (or other) phone number that can be shown, include the number/s. For the purpose of future Directories, the default preferred phone number to be listed should be the Lions Mobile Number.
iv. Ultimately it is up to the individual Lion whether they adopt a separate Officer Correspondence Address from their home address. If they are one and the same, remember to tick the check box under their personal address for correspondence. Dates of Birth: With the advent of full dates of birth at the beginning of 2019, most listed birthdays were incorrect because a default 1st Jan-uary or 30th June date was added to the year of birth already in MyLCI. The day and month of birth can be corrected at a Club level but if there is an error in the year of birth, that MUST be changed by Lions Clubs International. When amending dates of birth ensure the check box “Date of Birth is confirmed” is ticked prior to saving. Other MyLCI Club Information: 1. Club Information - Club Information is found under My Lions Club Tab and then Club Info. Double check that the meeting venue, day / time are correctly listed. If meeting times and locations vary, or if one meeting is of a different type to other that month, ensure the correct information is shown. 2. Officer Information – Found under My Lions Club Tab and then Officer Info. Please ensure that all appropriate officers for the current Lions year are listed e.g. President, Secretary, Treasurer, Administrator, Membership Chairperson, Vice President’s and Service Chairperson. If they are no listed access to this system will be declined. I have attached a number of examples of current member MyLCI listings to show where the deficiencies might exist with some private contact details redacted. Ted Osborn, District Administration and Club Support Chairman.

CLUB WEBMASTERS PLEASE NOTE
CLOSURE OF Oz-Clubhouse website
Closure of Oz-Clubhouse Lions Clubs using Oz-Clubhouse
should consider alternative options. Background The Oz-
Clubhouse system has been provided free-of-charge to Lions
Clubs and Districts in Multiple District 201 for a decade. It
was put in place to provide a simple website for Lions Clubs,
at a time when there were few low-cost alternatives. Oz-
Clubhouse was designed and built at no charge, by an Aus-
tralian Lion. In the intervening period it has been upgraded
once and is currently being maintained by the Multiple Dis-
trict. As a custom-built system, it is costly and difficult to
upgrade and it is now plagued by ongoing ‘bugs’ and has
become impossible to maintain. The Lions Multiple District
Council has resolved to retire the system in the coming
months.
