CASE STUDY: JET AIRWAYS TAKES OFF WITH CITRIX

Important points:

Jet airways is India’s most preferred airline, operating more than 380 flights daily to 43 destinations within the country .

Challenges:

- They are using various legacy software packages installed over years.- The system weren’t able to interact with one another or with finance or inventory system.- System were costing Jet Airways the time of its engineers and money that could have been

used on maintaining its planes , instead of needlessly maintaining excess inventory.- Seamless application delivery and timely access.- Applications were restricted to domestic users and run in a thick client environment.- Were delays in accessing applications, which hampers the decision making process.- 24 hour operational environment and prevalent bandwidth constraints in few cities in India.- Accurate and timely delivery of core applications.- Centralized administration streamlines IT resources.

Citrix system:

- Renowned in the airline industry for its software package, which provides integrated , intelligent aviation MRO(maintenance, repair, and operations) software to aviation organizations hoping to improve productivity.

- Benefits were enhanced and faster delivery of business-critical application to local and international users , timelier decision making and increased operational efficiencies, superior service levels and significantly lower IT administration cost.

- The aim was to invest in a solution that would centrally deliver applications , provide on demand access and tackle troubleshooting from a centralised location and with fewer resources.

- Load manager with citrix presentation server used to generate load sheet which ensure pilot to timely take off of the flight.

- All user connect using the web interface functionality of presentation server.- The critical and major revenue generating cargo booking system , cargo spot, which is

running on the citrix presentation server, is now delivered to offices across india and in the seven international countries.

- Able to configure , manage and deliver applications from centralised location.- Cargo booking system application, flight scheduling detail, crew rosters or ERP modules,

most business critical applications is now easily and quickly accessible. - Quick availability of reports from server.- Tremendous business saving from less time taken for application upgrades, better

centralized administration and remote troubleshooting of issues .

Strategies:- Increased Productivity.- Increase Revenue.- Saving time- Provide 24 hour operational environment.- Enterprise Integretion.- Provide support.- Centralised application management.- Timely delivery of core applications- Increase operational efficiency

Infrastructure:- ERP solution comprising SAP R/3 4.7 and business Warehouse(BW 3.5) in 2005.- Citrix presentation server software with Microsoft windows server 2003 running on three

two-CPU intel servers.- Currently about 300 concurrent users across all domestic and international location access

BW applications , a revenue management system , a cargo booking system, and entire suit of SAP R/3 modules.

- Load manager with citrix presentation server.- Web interface functionality.

Decisions:- Decided to deploy an ERP solution comprising SAP R/3 4.7 and business Warehouse(BW 3.5)

in 2005.- Implementing Citrix presentation server for centralized applications management.

Case Study Questions:

1) What Problems does jet airways hope that Citrix technology will solve?

Ans: Following problems can be solved:

a) The system weren’t able to interact with each other.b) Seamless application delivery and timely access.c) Applications were restricted to domestic users and run in thick-client environmentd) Delays in accessing applicationse) 24 hour operational environmentf) Quicker sharing of data.g) Hassle free support.h) Tackle troubleshooting from centralized location.i) Instant application access by all users.j) Deployment of manpower resources for troubleshooting at different locations was time

consuming and adding substantially to the cost.

2) Hoe does citrix system improve operational efficiency and decision making?

Ans: Delivery of load manager application using citrix presentation server will enable quick availability of report from the system. This will help to ensure timely departure of flights . this is vitally important , as any delay I reports would lead to flight delay and affect operational efficiency and passenger satisfaction.

Load manager is a standard application used to generate load sheet which ensure pilot to timely take-off.

Application delivery and information availability in a timely manner , instant access to business critical application help manager to take faster decisions.

3) Give Examples of three decisions supported by the citrix system . what information does the system provide to support each of these decisions?

Ans: Following decisions are supported by citrix system

a) Pilot ensure timely take-off of the flights: Load manager is a standard application used to generate load sheet which ensure pilot to timely take-off.

b) Smooth and timely operation of flights: availability of accurate and critical information holds the key to seamless application on all fonts and, consequently , smooth and timely operation of flights.

c) Accurate and timely delivery of core application:presentation server with its inherent capabilities facilates Application delivery and information availability in a timely manner , instant access to business critical application help manager to take faster decisions.
