CONFIRMATION By Fr. O’Dell
On Sunday afternoon, seventeen young adults from St. Therese parish will be
confirmed at the Cathedral of St. Joseph by Bishop Paul Swain. Confirmation is an
awesome and a powerful sacrament that confers massive amounts of grace into the
hearts and souls of the young people who will receive it. All of us are proud of their
hard work and of their faith. Today, I’d like to take just a few minutes to talk about this
Sacrament and what it does for us.
The Sacrament of Confirmation is one of the three sacraments of Christian
initiation. When we have received these sacraments (Baptism, Confirmation and Holy
Eucharist) we are fully brought into the sacramental life of the Catholic Church. Bap-
tism removes Original Sin and makes us part of the Body of Christ. Holy Eucharist
unites us with the real Body and Blood of Jesus Christ - the Bread of Life - the “food”
we need for our journey through life. Confirmation is the Sacrament that celebrates the
descent of the Holy Spirit on the Twelve Apostles at Pentecost. The time when the Holy
Spirit came upon those Apostles in the form of tongues of fire and filled them with His
powerful gifts - the seven gifts that gave them the ability to go out and preach the
Gospel to the whole world. These are the same seven gifts that each and every one of us
receive when we were confirmed. It’s the same seven gifts that our Confirmation
candidates will receive when the Bishop places the Sacred Chrism oil on their head and
makes the sign of the cross and says to them: “Receive the Gifts of the Holy Spirit -
Peace be with you.”
So, what are these gifts and what do they do for us? First, is the gift of
Knowledge - the gift that helps us come to know God and to judge how God’s gift of
creation can lead us to Him. This gift helps us sort out all of the voices and influences
of the world. Second, is the gift of Wisdom - the gift that allows us to value the full
importance of our faith - the gift that helps us let God’s wisdom into our own hearts to
guide our lives - the gift that leads us to God. Third, is the gift of Understanding - this
gift gives us the certitude of being able to know what the truth is and to hold onto it. It
allows us to sort out all the various influences and voices and to understand what is the
truth. The fourth gift is Good Counsel - the gift that allows us to use the gift of
prudence, to know what the right thing is in a particular circumstance. This gift helps us
do the next right action that is in front of us - to do God’s Will. Fifth, is the gift of Piety
- the gift that helps us to reverence what is holy - to worship and serve God above all
else. The sixth is Fortitude - this gift gives us the courage and the power to be able to
do the right and moral thing in life - to put God’s Will into effect in our lives despite
what obstacles we encounter. The seventh gift is the gift of Fear of the Lord. This gift
allows us to always hold the love, mercy, and goodness of our God in wonder and awe.
It gives us the gift of humility - the fear and respect to be able to recognize that God is
All Powerful. That He is the One that gives us all good gifts.
We need each and every one of these gifts for two reasons. First, these gifts
help us tap into the reservoir of God’s grace that facilitates us living our lives in such a
way that we are led to Heaven. This is where we all want to be at the end of our lives -
at one with our Lord in the Kingdom. Second, the Holy Spirit uses and shapes His seven
gifts, to guide us through life, to show us the right path, to lead us always closer to Him.
These seven gifts equip us to go out and fight the good fight - to stand up against the
temptations of the Devil - to always move toward what is good - what is of God.
In a very real way, Confirmation is also a Sacrament of vocation. It gives us
the potency to be able to become adults in our faith - to be mature in the living out of
our Christian call. That is why the tradition in the Western Church is to celebrate the
Sacrament of Confirmation in late childhood or adolescence. It signals that we have
accepted a new role, a role of maturity in our faith life. Confirmation can only be
received one time - because it changes us and conforms us in a special way to Jesus
Christ.
The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit that we receive in Confirmation are powerful
tools that help “recreate” us. Support our Confirmation candidates in their reception of
this Sacrament. Pray for them.
Have a good and blessed week.
