FROM OUR PASTOR, FR. ANTONY
My Dearest Parishioners in Jesus Christ,
In last Sunday’s reflection we saw that Jesus is God’s goodness and love in person and action. In today’s Gospel, St. Mark shows Jesus as God’s goodness in action. Jesus heals a possessed person, a demoniac. We are too modern to believe in miraculous healings. We consider ourselves to be scientifically so enlightened and
theologically so emancipated that it goes altogether against the grain to believe in demons, and it gives us intellectual itching even to imagine that human beings could be possessed by the devil!
1. Should we, even if we can, believe in the healing power of Jesus?
2. Should we, even if we can, believe in demoniac possession and consequently in exorcism?
Hearing today’s Gospel, we are tempted to think: “This is a clear instance where the Bible stands in need of demythologization. Can the Catholic Church expect modern and post-modern man, come of age, to accept her teachings on the devil?

FROM FR. ANTONY, continued However difficult it may be for us to believe in such things, the answer is clear as crystal. If we are Christians, we should believe in them. Our greatest difficulty in believing in them is our fear that in doing so we may become superstitious. This fear is in turn caused by our lack of a real working faith in the resurrection of Christ. For our faith in the healing power of Jesus ultimately is a logical consequence of our faith in the resurrection of Christ. Jesus by rising from the dead conquered all forms of evil by defeating all agents of evil. The name that describes Satan is evildoer, because he is the personification of evil. And Jesus is called the Holy One, the Saviour. Whenever Jesus saves us, it is always from the evil one. Do evils exist? Do they influence human beings and does their influence enslave them? Consequently, can there be genuine cases of deliverance from the devil? Let us listen to Pope Paul VI: “What are the greatest needs of the Church today? Do not let our answer surprise you as being over-simple or even superstitious and unreal: one of the greatest needs is defence from that evil which is called the devil.” It is contrary to the teaching of the Bible and the Church to refuse to recognize the existence of such a reality… The question of the devil and the influence he can exert on individual persons as well as on communities, whole societies or events, is a very important part of Catholic doctrine, which is given little attention today. Let us pray: Holy Spirit, grant me the grace of discernment to recognize the devil and his clever tricks, Amen.
With kindest regards, Fr. Antony Kolenchery

Just the Way You Are
There's an old fable about a water-bearer who had two large
clay pots. Each hung on the end of a pole carried across his
shoulders. One pot had a crack in it while the other delivered a
full portion of water at the end of the walk from the stream. The
perfect pot was proud of its accomplishment, perfect to the end
for which it was made. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed
of its imperfection, miserable that it could only accomplish or
deliver half of what it used to.
The compassionate water-bearer tried to cheer the cracked
pot. He said, “Tomorrow, enjoy the lovely flowers along the
path.” The flowers cheered the cracked pot somewhat, but at
the end of the trail he was sad again to think it only delivered
half its load.
The water-bearer said: “Did you notice the flowers are only on
your side of the path? That's because I have always known
about your flaw, but I did not replace you. Instead, I planted
flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we
walked back, you've watered them. For two years I’ve been
able to pick beautiful flowers to decorate my master's table.
Without you being just the way you are, he would not have this
beauty to grace his house.”
Each of us has unique gifts and flaws. But if we allow it, the
Lord will use us to grace His Father's table. In God's great
economy, nothing goes to waste. So as we seek ways to
minister together, and build up our parish, as God calls us each
to the tasks He has appointed for us, let's not be afraid of our
imperfections. Let us not say we are too young, or too old, or
not good enough… But offer what we can and allow God to use
us for His purpose, so that we can be the cause of beauty in His
pathway. It might surprise us what we are capable of. We can
go out boldly, knowing that in our weakness, we find His
strength, and that in Jesus, great things beyond our imagining
are possible to God's glory. May you be richly blessed, dear
St. Simon and St. Jude family. ~Marguerite

SOUP AND STATIONS OF THE CROSS The parish planning for the Liturgical
seasons and events occurs well before the
celebration and it is hard to believe but in a
few weeks we will begin the season of
Lent. Ash Wednesday this year begins on
February 14th. For the past two years we have
included as part of our Lenten observance, the
opportunity to pray the Stations of the Cross as a
community. Once again we will provide you with
this opportunity. We begin this prayerful
experience each Wednesday following Ash
Wednesday, with a simple meatless soup dinner in the
parish hall, followed by praying the
Stations of the Cross in the Church.
Each week a different group, or
groups, in the parish hosts this event.
This year we thought it would be a wonderful
opportunity to have one week as an open invitation to
any parishioner willing to provide a meatless soup
ready to serve in a pot or crock pot on Wednesday
March 7th.
The details are as follows:
Wednesday March 7, 2018
Provide a meatless soup, hot and ready to serve in
a pot or crock pot.
Arrive at the parish hall at 5:30 pm. Soup is
served at 6:00 pm.
If you would like to donate a pot of soup please
contact Sue Hofgartner at the parish 519-728-3381
ext. #26 or via email at [email protected].
Many thanks for your consideration.
