Endowments fund vital research to prevent and cure today’s top killers. In 2016, grateful patient Mathew Evans established a research endowment in urologic oncology in the School of Medicine’s Department of Urology. This support will help our experts discern new cancer treatment targets and discover the molecular pathways to those targets.

Expanding knowledge and improving the world are double drivers for UC Davis

researchers, many of whom benefit from endowment support. Poised at the forefront of their fields, our faculty and staff are world renowned for their expertise, ingenuity and collegiality. Philanthropy helps lead these luminaries to discovery. To understanding. To cures.

◗ Through our interdisciplinary One Health initiative, UC Davis experts in human health, veterinary medicine and agriculture address critical issues such as cancer and mosquito-borne illnesses.

◗ In 2016 the California Legislature approved $5 million to establish the California Firearm Violence Research Center at UC Davis, the first state-funded unit of its kind.

◗ We are a leader in energy research, with more than 100 faculty engaged in renewable energy, biofuels, efficiency, hydrogen pathways, transportation and lighting technology.

◗ The College of Biological Sciences is one of only two colleges in the nation devoted to fundamental biological research.

◗ In 2014-15, UC Davis filed 229 records of invention, 210 patent applications, and issued 57 licenses for technology.

◗ Nearly 40 percent of our undergraduate students participate in hands-on research.

RESEARCH

“I CAME THROUGH IT ALL BECAUSE

OF THE COMMITMENT AT UC DAVIS

HEALTH SYSTEM.”

MATHEW EVANS CANCER SURVIVOR, GRATEFUL PATIENT

Education is the heart of the UC Davis mission. From endowed scholarships to chairs and professorships,

philanthropy allows students and faculty to meet in an environment of academic discovery and freedom, where the great minds of today inspire the leaders of tomorrow.

◗ UC Davis ranks as a top-ten public university on both The Wall Street Journal and U.S. News & World Report 2016 lists.

◗ We have the world’s top veterinary school, and the nation’s top agriculture and forestry program.

◗ Our campus educates more California undergraduates than any other UC.

◗ The College of Letters and Science teaches the core curriculum for nearly all our 23,000 undergrads and mentors more than 1,000 grad students each year.

◗ The New York Times ranks us second among top U.S. colleges doing the most for low-income students.

◗ In 2015-16, students received support of more than $10 million in endowment payout distributions.

◗ The Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing was established in 2009 through a $100 million grant, the nation’s largest for nursing education.

◗ Forbes magazine has named us the “most important STEM college for women.”

◗ Aggie athletes are high academic achievers: Nine teams had the highest NCAA graduation success rates in their conferences in 2015.

TEACHING

“YOUR SCHOLARSHIP ALLOWED ME TO

CONCENTRATE ON MY STUDIES AND

PROJECTS IN THIS EXTREMELY BUSY SENIOR

YEAR. MY SUCCESS WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN

POSSIBLE WITHOUT YOUR HELP.”

RACHEL MURADIAN  ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT RECIPIENT

Dr. Art Bickford and avian resident Dr. Manuela Crispo examine a chick. To help ensure the future of the poultry and egg industry, the Arthur A. Bickford Endowed Avian Residency Program at the School of Veterinary Medicine was established to provide permanent support to train the next generation of veterinarians — the leaders of tomorrow in avian health and diagnostics.

As a public land-grant institution, UC Davis exists thanks to the state of California — and the entire university gives back in turn. Thanks

to philanthropy we can be even stronger in programs that support our communities, our lands, and our water resources, building a robust future for California and beyond.

◗ UC Davis contributes more than $8.1 billion each year to the California economy.

PUBLIC SERVICE

“RUSSELL CARED ABOUT SUSTAINABILITY AND ENSURING RANGELANDS

WOULD STAY HEALTHY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS.”

DR. KEN TATE, RANGELAND WATERSHED SPECIALIST IN COOPERATIVE EXTENSION THE RUSSELL L. RUSTICI ENDOWMENTS IN RANGELAND WATERSHED SCIENCE

Siblings Corinne and Russell Rustici dedicated their lives to their love of the land and philanthropy. Both established significant legacies at UC Davis to benefit the environment, and human and animal health. The Corinne Rustici endowments will fund programs in human and applied nutrition science, while the Russell Rustici endowments support rangeland management and sustainability.

◗ Our students, faculty and staff volunteer more than 600,000 hours of community service a year.

◗ We manage five reserves of the UC Natural Reserve System, the largest set of university-administered protected lands in the world.

◗ The UC Davis Health System serves a 33-county area of six million residents, and has the region’s only Level 1 trauma center.

◗ The UC Davis Children’s Hospital is the first on the West Coast to receive Level I Children’s Surgery Center verification.

◗ Our veterinary hospital cares for 50,000 small and large animals each year.

◗ The School of Law offers community legal support in immigration, prison law, civil rights litigation and family protection.

◗ The School of Education has prepared 7,000 teachers for California classrooms, and the Graduate School of Management has prepared 3,600 business leaders.

ENDOWED FACULTY

“THE IDEA OF GETTING TOP-NOTCH PROFESSORS

TO UC DAVIS RESONATED WITH BOTH OF US

AS SOMETHING WE’D LIKE TO BE A PART OF,

TO GROW THE UNIVERSITY’S ALREADY GREAT

ACADEMIC OFFERINGS.”

JOELLE HURLSTON ’89 PRESIDENTIAL CHAIR DONOR

A renowned fetal and neonatal surgeon, Dr. Diana Farmer is the Pearl Stamps Stewart Professor of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at UC Davis Children’s Hospital. The university has 165 endowed chairs and professorships.

A university is as strong as those within it. We are driven forward by the remarkable faculty who

create new ideas and discover new knowledge. The creation of an endowed faculty chair or professorship is a philanthropic opportunity that can have a profound impact and benefit generations to come.

Scholars of international standing, the holders of endowed positions attract research funding and draw top faculty colleagues and students from around the world. Graduate students and junior faculty mentored by endowed faculty often take research in new directions and become leaders in their own right.

A Presidential Chair is in a class of its own. Through this current program, up to eight UC Davis endowments of $1.5 million or more will be matched with $500,000 from the University of California Office of the President, establishing robust faculty support for maximum impact.

UC Davis is proud to have established three Presidential Chairs in 2016, benefiting five schools and colleges:

The Andrew John Gabor Presidential Chair in the School of Medicine’s Department of Neurology will put

UC Davis on the map as a global hub for seizure- disorder research. In the College of Letters and

Science, the Bita Daryabari Presidential Chair in Persian Language and Literature

will transform UC Davis into a leading knowledge center that advances global

understanding of Persian language and culture. And in an innovative

first-of-its-kind chair, the Michael and Joelle Hurlston Presiden-

tial Chair will rotate every five years among the three colleges

and schools from which the donors earned their

degrees: the College of Agricultural and Envi-

ronmental Sciences, the College of Engi-

neering and the Graduate School of Management.
