The Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time January 28, 2018

‘The people were astonished at Jesus’ teaching……..” Mark 1:22 169 years ago a group of lay people made the dream of having a Catholic school in Madison become a reality for the locals wanting a quality education for their children. The Sisters of Charity took hold of that dream in 1860 and ran with it. The establishment of Saint Vincent Martyr School quelled a hunger that fed the souls of God’s little ones in this town. That same hunger exists to this very day as parents seek to provide their children with a value-based education grounded in faith and our teachers and staff work tirelessly to collaborate with them to whet and feed that spiritual appetite. As we celebrate Catholic Schools Week for the next six days, we pause to reflect on how blessed we are. We walk in the footsteps of many generations of SVMS graduates who crossed the threshold of our school in search of a ‘soul knowledge’ that goes well beyond the knowledge found in books. It is our privilege to honor that legacy! Our teachers are committed to providing the same excellence in education as past teachers have done. We strive to keep current while holding onto what has been tried and tested with a great balance of tradition and modern. God is always in the center! Morning prayer, led by middle school students, sets the tone for the day and faith is infused in all lessons throughout the school day. Weekly Mass on Wednesdays immerses the children in the Word, whose message is broken open so majestically in an age-appropriate manner by Fr. George. He radiates a contagion of religious joy that seeps into the hearts and souls of our faith community and animates all that we do. The children are constantly encouraged to put their faith into action. On Tuesday our middle school children will spend a day with special needs children, work in a community food bank and be part of the staff at Covenant House. Our younger students will engage in community service activities that will benefit various organizations in need. They will bring life to the message of brotherly and sisterly love that was part and parcel of Jesus’ life on earth. Yes! We are astonished at Jesus’ teaching at Saint Vincent Martyr School, just like the people of His time were, as stated in today’s gospel. We are grateful to you, our parishioners for your continued support and prayers. We promise you our daily prayers. Please feel free to come by the school during the coming week to join in the festivities. You will be filled with a joy that raises our rafters each and every day and keeps us all young! FORMING INTENTIONAL DISCIPLES: THE PATH TO KNOWING AND FOLLOWING JESUS

I am happy to invite all of you to consider participating in an exciting project that we will begin during the season of Lent. What we are undertaking is the formation of small groups within the parish that will engage in discussing the book: Forming Intentional Disciples. The groups will meet for a total of six times – 3 times during Lent in March and 3 times during the Easter season in April. At this point we are simply asking you to indicate that you are interested in being involved. You can do that through our website SVMNJ.org or by emailing Jan at [email protected] with your cell/house phone and email address or by calling 973-377-4000, ext. 253. Once we see how many folks we have signed up we will create an appropriate number of groups that will meet on various days at various times, and ask you for your preference. Please respond by Monday, February 5.

Stewardship Corner

Immediately the news about Him spread everywhere into all the surrounding district of Galilee.

Mark 1:28

In today’s Gospel we hear proclaimed the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. He teaches. He heals. And all are amazed. By their baptism, Christian stewards realize they are called to do the same in their lives. They are called to be the light of Christ each day. As we bring closure to the beginning of this new year, now is a good time to ask the Lord to fill our hearts with courage and faith, so that we too may publicly minister in his name; that we may be liberated from our insecurities and fear so that we can share the Gospel authoritatively and work to heal at least one wounded relationship in the coming months ahead.

Adult Confirmation Classes

St. Vincent is now offering an adult Confirmation process

for any interested baptized Catholic. This formation process will involve instruction and faith sharing sessions starting in January and leading up to

Confirmation at the Easter Vigil. The instruction process will take place jointly with the RCIA. The focus of the program is to connect the practice of our Catholic Faith to our experiences in our everyday lives. For many who participate in this program, it is an opportunity to see, for the first time, the faith of the Church with an adult understanding. Thursday classes have begun in the Parish Media Center. It is not too late to register - please contact Jan at [email protected] or ext. 253.

PRAYER

ROSARY

The Rosary is prayed every morning Monday - Saturday at 8:00 a.m. followed by Mass at 8:30 a.m. Let us continue this devotion to our Blessed Mother. Remember the Rosary Altar Society meets every 2nd Monday of the month.

WEEKLY HOLY HOUR AND DIVINE MERCY CHAPLET

We are hosting a Holy Hour immediately after the Noon Mass each Thursday. During the Holy Hour we will recite the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy and have some quiet time of reflection. All are welcome to share in this holy hour.

Feast of the Presentation of the Lord – Friday, February 2

Forty days after Christmas, we celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord at the Temple. The event is described in the Gospel of Luke (Luke 2:22–40). According to the gospel, Mary and Joseph took the baby Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem forty days after his birth to complete Mary's ritual purification after childbirth, and to perform the redemption of the firstborn, in obedience to the Law of Moses. Luke explicitly says that Joseph and Mary take the option provided for poor people (those who could not afford a lamb), sacrificing "a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons." The practice of blessing candles on that day is rooted in the life of Jesus. Forty days after his birth, Jesus was blessed by the priest in the temple (Luke 2: 22-40). The candles represent Jesus as the true light to the nations and honor his sacrifice for us. The blessed beeswax candles are used throughout the year and special candles are blessed and used on the feast day of St. Blaise, for the blessing of throats. We invite you to participate in Mass on Friday, February 2 (8:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.) and to bring a candle from your home to be blessed at the beginning of Mass then lit throughout the year as a reminder of the light of Christ which burns in our hearts and homes.

BLESSING OF THROATS Throats will be blessed on Saturday, February 3, the feast of St. Blaise at the 8:30 a.m. Mass and at all the weekend liturgies.

PASTORAL COUNCIL MEETING The next Pastoral Council meeting is scheduled for Monday, January 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the St. Peter's Room. Among our main agenda items are discipleship and stewardship. All are welcome to attend, and we look forward to seeing you there.

MSGR. GEORGE TO BE HONORED

BY ASSUMPTION SISTERS

Sister Joseph Spring, President of Assumption College will speak at all our masses next weekend, February 3/4 on the mission of the college. Fr. George will be honored at their gala on March 22 at the Hanover Marriott. Please consider attending the gala or placing a congratulatory message in their journal. Your support will make a difference in the lives of many through the education of a Catholic Sister. Teach a Sister…touch the world!

Family Perspective Today's gospel reminds us "unclean spirits" still haunt our families. These "spirits" thrive inside our grudges, punishing silence, impatience and abruptness. Today Jesus offers you the "authority" to cast out these spirits from your life and your family.
