HEALTH CARE IS A LIFE ISSUE
By: Fr. O’Dell
Not long ago I was visiting a person in the hospital. He told me that he had
fallen and that he had broken his hip. He also told me that he was going to be shortly
discharged from the hospital because he did not have sufficient health care coverage to
insure that he would have the funding necessary if he stayed any longer in an inpatient
facility. He told me that he was going to “go home” but that he was worried about who
would help take care of him and how well he would heal.
The next day, I talked to a woman who was having difficulty finding a
pharmacy who would work with her to get a prescription refilled. She said that she did
not have drug coverage and that she regularly paid for her medicines out of her own
pocket. She needed a refill on a prescription today but was out of money. She was
wondering if her pharmacy would “charge” her medicine until she got paid later in the
week. She told me that she would be “good” for the expense and really needed the
medicine.
Just this week, I talked to a parent who was looking for a surgeon who
could help her child because she had been born with a cleft palate. The parent was
unemployed and could not afford the cost of the operation. She wondered if some
facility would help fund the surgery so his child would have a chance at having a
healthy and good life.
Finally, this week I was talking to a college student who told me that she
wasn’t feeling very well. She told me that her head had been hurting quite badly. She
told me that the doctors had not been able to determine what was causing the problem
and she was really worried. She told me that when you don’t feel well it kind of
“ruins” every good time you might have in life.
These four examples really made me start to think just how much I take
good health and medical care for granted. I realized how little I think about the gift of
well-being that God has given me and how I forget to thank Him for that gift every
single day of the year. I also got to thinking about how poor health and lack of medical
attention really undermines the quality of life that we all desire and as a result
compromises a reverencing that we should all carry in our hearts for the value and joy
of living.
I did a little research and found some startling facts. One fact stated that nearly
38% of the individuals living in the United States in the lowest one third of economic
resources reported only fair or poor health. Another astounding fact, marginalized
groups of people in our country suffer poor health and lack of medical resources. For
example, native peoples residing on reservations in our country have serious health
concerns and lack of medical facilities and resources. A further fact showed that people
living in overcrowded slum areas of our largest cities have health concerns not shared
by people living in suburban areas – part of those concerns were caused by the failure
to enforce adequate health codes and laws. A final fact that I will share, poor oral health
is one of the leading causes for bad health because it opens the body to infection by
other diseases. Poor oral health is often caused by the unavailability of – or inability to
pay for dental services. A large number of people in our country report that concern.
These facts are really astounding given the fact that we live in one of the
wealthiest countries in the world. They are equally astounding given the fact that as a
Christian people, we are called clearly to pay attention to the needs of others –
including their need for adequate health care.
What exactly does Christ have to say about honoring human life by the
provision of adequate health care for all people? Well, Christ never comes out and
directly tells us to care for the health needs of others – but his ministry certainly seems
to support that notion. Look at how much time Christ spent healing those who came to
Him. He healed the woman with hemorrhages, He healed the leper, He healed the man
born blind, He healed those suffering from both physical and mental diseases. Christ
sent His disciples out to teach, preach and heal. Christ told us that we were to treat our
neighbor as ourselves and His parable about the Good Samaritan taught us who our

neighbors were. The Good Samaritan took care of the injured traveler. In other words,
Christ indicates by His teachings and His actions that we are called to honor human
life by restoring to health those who are ill. We do that by helping them access what
medical help they need, by providing adequate health coverage for all people, by
seeking to reach out to the sick, the injured and the suffering to help them in their time
of need.
New Parishioners ~ Please welcome Becky & Barry Fife
to our St. Therese Family!
The April Ministry Schedule is done and on-line! The 4PM & 11AM Masses do not have enough volunteers to fill the 7 Eucharistic Minister positions needed each week—so we scheduled what we had. Fr. O’Dell will call volunteers forward IF he wants/needs them. Please wait for his direction, before you head up to the Altar to help. If you would like to sign-up as a new Eucharistic Minister, please contact Fr. O’Dell for training, then call the office to be added to the schedule. Thank you for your cooperation!
