The committee was formed in 1933 with many of Allora's pioneer families being represented. Over the years the club has seen some very good times when the green would be full on both Saturday and Sunday and usually at least one day during the week. During the past 80 years, some of Allora's great citizens have been President of the Bowls Club, including Danny O'Leary, Father Tom McCormack, Clyde Stewart, Ollie Smith, Kev Geaney, Jack Geaney and Mal Sinton. The Ladies Bowls Club was established in 1936 and achieved tremendous success, thanks in no small part to the talent of the very gifted sportswoman Mrs Thelma Holmes. Thelma won many club titles in addition to winning the district singles titles 10 times. In later years Bev Christensen won numerous club and district bowls titles. To celebrate the anniversary, the Sports Club is holding a triples event on Sunday 5th of October starting at 1 pm. Sports Club secretary John Ellwood is hoping that many of the old bowlers and members will come down to the club to catch up with friends even if they are not able to bowl. To nominate a team or as a single please ring Greg on 0431 568 818 or Wendy on 0437 342 870. The first honour board, the first committee and the 1935 President Mr Imhoff.

Letter to the Editor…Dear Sir,With respect I would like to apologise most profusely to the person whose gentile standards I offended by driving my most historic racing car “The Wikner Ford Special” on Bennett and Drayton streets today. I do understand it was your concern for the public that convinced you to report me for my potentially unlawful actions. My only defence is that as a public spirited member of the Allora community I offered to display my historic car for the benefit of the Allora Sports Museum at the special invitation of the Allora Sports Museum on the occasion of the visit to the said museum by our Australian World Champion Indy Car driver Toowoomba’s Will Power. Please make yourself known to me the next time you see me in Herbert St so that I can apologise to you personally for my indiscretion. Most SincerelyDoug Partington

We're going on a dragon hunt…Instead of going on a "bear hunt" during the September/October school holidays, local children were encouraged to go on a "dragon hunt" at their local library.Principal Librarian Samantha Shelbourn said the Warwick and Stanthorpe libraries have organised some great activities over the school holiday period including the "I Spy Dragon Hunt".On Tuesday September 23 at Stanthorpe and then Wednesday September 24 at Warwick, children were able to look around both libraries for the 16 hidden dragons as well as participating in several activity tables that will have dragon craft and paper animals. The children were also helped to create yarn bugs. This is a really fun activity with children using yarn to make a colourful decorated bug."At the Allora Library we will have craft activities, centred around paper animals and making a foldout booklet," she said.Ms Shelbourn said many local children have found the library programs a great addition to the school holiday activities. Parents and children alike have the opportunity to look for books, movies, magazines and resources while they are at the library."It's the perfect opportunity to get to know your local library and also to meet up with other families for a catch-up. Our school holiday program goes through until October 3," she said.Anyone wanting further information or wanting to book for activities can phone the libraries Allora 4666 3742, Warwick 4661 0342, and Stanthorpe 4681 2141.

WIRAC Pools now openSouthern Downs Regional Council has advised that the pools at WIRAC are now open and fully functional as of Thursday, September 18.The pools were closed late on Tuesday (September 16) afternoon due to some issues with power outages. These outages meant that pumps and water heating systems were not able to operate. SDRC began working on fixing these issues immediately and contractors have resolved the power surge and outage issues.SDRC apologies for the inconvenience and encourages everyone to enjoy the WIRAC pools and other facilities as the warmer weather arrives

BAD JOKE OF THE WEEKA guy had told all of his friends about the great steak he'd eaten downtown the day before. A group of them decided to head down and see if was really as large

and delicious as he was making it out to be.

The group was seated in the back of the restaurant. After looking over the menu, they ordered and waited,

hungrily, for their large, delicious pieces of gigantic steaks.

To their collective disappointment, the waiter brought out some of the smallest steaks they'd ever seen.

"Now see here," the very embarrassed guy said to the waiter. "Yesterday when I came down here you served me a BIG, juicy, steak. Today, though, when I have my friends invited, you serve small miniature steaks! What

is the meaning of this?"

"Yes, sir," replied the waiter, "yesterday you were sitting by the window."

Looking Back…Allora Servicemen K.I.A.The Allora and District Historical Society have applied for a Centenary of the Anzacs Grant to produce a book on the Allora servicemen who were killed, or died as a result of wounds sustained, in WW I. The Allora memorial is inscribed with the names of 47 Allora men who were killed in the war. Research has already uncovered four others with strong Allora connections whose names do not appear. Thanks to Lesley Telford for information on John Victor Black, John Scott Telford and Harold Shooter, and to Max Gartner who has provided information on Pte. Harry Gartner. Of these, Harold Shooter is the only name to appear on the Allora memorial, although John Scott Telford is commemorated on the Clifton memorial.Henry (Harry) Gartner was born in Allora in 1887, the sixth child of very early Allora residents Albert and Mary Ann Gartner (nee Wilson). He attended the Allora State School and served a four year plumber’s apprenticeship with H. W. Stay. Owing to a family break-up he was living and working as a plumber in Brisbane when he enlisted on the 7th September 1915. Pte. Harry Gartner was awarded the Military Medal on the 22nd May 1917 and died of wounds received at Poperinghe, Belgium, on the 26th September 1917. His father, Albert Gartner, was still living in Allora up to the time of his death in 1934.John Victor Black’s parents, Thomas Black and Anne O’Neill, were married in St. Patrick’s Church on the 20th October 1892. The Black family were Allora pioneers and Anne O’Neill’s father was a former teacher of the original Goomburra School. Although John Victor Black was born at Millmerran, he was brought up in the Allora and Goomburra districts. At the time of his enlistment in Brisbane on the 22nd April 1915 he was a schoolteacher, following the profession of

his mother and grandfather. He served with the 26th Battalion at Gallipoli, and following the withdrawal in December 1915 and training in Egypt, his battalion was sent to the Western Front in March 1916. Sergeant John Victor Black was killed in action on the 5th August, 1916, in the Battle of Pozieres. Another soldier with strong links to Allora’s early days was Norman Leslie Weynand, the son of Henry and Frances Weynand (nee Anderson). He was the grandson of Allora pioneers Edward and Jane Anderson. Henry Weynand was a blacksmith in Allora and had served in the Franco-Prussian War. Norman was born in Allora in 1894 and would have attended the Allora State School. Henry Weynand sold the blacksmith’s shop in 1907 and the family moved to Brisbane. Norman was working as a clerk when he enlisted on the 18th August 1914. He was one of the first Australians to enlist in the newly formed A. I. F. and had the service number of 66.Norman Weynand gained rapid promotion, although he may have held rank in 7th Battalion Moreton Bay Regiment, of which he was a member, before joining the A. I. F. He was a corporal by the end of August 1914 and was promoted to sergeant on the 28th April, 1915, three days after the landing at Gallipoli. He was a 2nd Lieutenant by the time of the evacuation from Gallipoli and was promoted to Lieutenant in Egypt prior to embarkation to France. Lieutenant

Norman Leslie Weynand was killed in action in France on the 23rd July 1916.The Allora and District Historical Society would be pleased to receive the details of any other serviceman from the Allora district who was killed in WW I or died subsequently of wounds. Please contact any member.

Council seeks community views on local library servicesSouthern Downs Regional Council is seeking community views about the way forward for its local library services and is reminding everyone that there is only a few days left for feedback and submissions to be lodged.Council's Community Services Manager Sheila Stebbings said Council is gathering information for a Library Services Strategic Plan which will give the Southern Downs libraries and its services direction into the future."We want to get the right mix of traditional library use together with new online and digital resources and information."Community members feel strongly about our libraries and have a range of needs to be met. We need people to express

their views and give us suggestions about changes or additions to current library services."The consultation process began in August and runs through until Friday September 26."Library staff have formulated a survey and we're asking people to go to the SDRC website and answer the questions using our online engagement tool 'Bang the Table'."It will only take about five minutes to fill in the survey and this will provide Council with important information."Council also held a series of public information sessions which were well attended," she said.Mr Ivan Hancock, who attended the Killarney public information session, said he felt the local meeting was a good starting point for gathering community opinion."I must admit I was a bit reluctant at first but the Council and library staff were very informative and gave us the opportunity to air our views."The meeting opened up the communication and I hope this continues. I feel that if you're concerned about something then you have to front up so I was happy that there were good numbers at the public meetings," he said.Mrs Stebbings said the public information sessions had been completed but anyone who would still like to contribute can use the online engagement tool or fill out a survey at the three libraries within the Southern Downs - Warwick, Stanthorpe and Allora."For those not inclined to use the online method we have hard copies of the survey available over the same time frame, and can be found at Council libraries and community contact centres, WIRAC, and selected shops and post offices. You can also contact your local library to have a copy of the survey posted to you," she said.Further information go to www.sdrc.qld.gov.au and click on the button "Have your say".
